Search engine optimization (SEO) techniques have continued to develop along with the Internet and the World Wide Web.  Throughout the past few years, the number of webpages on the Internet has increased dramatically, making it even more difficult to optimize websites for search engine results.  One of the most effective SEO techniques, however, is link building, otherwise known as “backlinking.”  Read on to learn more about link building and how it can aid in search engine optimization.


Basics of link building


To understand the concept of link building, it’s first important to understand how the World Wide Web works.  In the most basic terms, the World Wide Web is a collection of websites that are all interconnected.  A link or “hyperlink” is a portion of a website (picture, text, etc.) that, when clicked, will lead you to another website.  These relationships between websites play a vital role in search engine optimization, because backlinks are one of the main factors that are calculated by the search engine when displaying results.  In other words, your website is likely to have higher search engine priority if it has more backlinks.  Backlinks are links to your website from an outside website.  The objective of link building is to increase the number of backlinks to your website, thereby improving your search engine optimization.


Benefits of link building in terms of profit      


-  The first and perhaps most important benefit of link building is that it increases the traffic to your website.  The more backlinks there are to your website, the more the chances are of people clicking on the links and visiting your page.  This can increase your exposure, sales, and market reach.  Backlinks are basically a form of free advertising.

-  Another advantage is that Internet users are more likely to trust a site with many backlinks.  Having many backlinks is a sign to your readers that your website is more reliable, popular, and (oftentimes) respected in comparison to other websites.

-  Link building is also beneficial because as time passes, you are likely to build more links and improve your web presence.


Profitable strategies in building links


-  Reciprocal linking is when you agree to post links to another webpage in return for the same favor.  You can also practice one-way linking through placing your link in your forum signature, in blog postings, or general opinion postings on other websites.

-  Pay-per-click or PPC link building is another profitable strategy that results in direct profit for every click to the PPC link.

-  Some webmasters decide to purchase links on other websites.  This can be profitable, especially if the other website is popular and relevant to the content of your website.

-  Association linking is another form of link building, which can be profitable mainly because it is free.  Also, association linking brings credibility and reliability to your website, because you are linked with established associations and organizations.

-  Some other link building strategies include tapping into partner websites, social networking sites, press releases, corporate blogging, and “link-to-us” items.
