Fewer and fewer business owners are spending their precious advertising dollars on listings in any of the various telephone books published today. Not that many years ago, it was deemed essential for businesses, large and small, to be included in these much-used publications, but the world has changed tremendously since then.

Studies have shown that most consumers now turn to the internet when looking for information on local companies. Even those who intend to phone with a question or to make a purchase or reservation will pull the website up first to find the phone number. It actually takes less time for many people to type a name in a search engine than it does to find the phone book, look up the listing and try to read the tiny type.

Those businesses without an effective local internet marketing campaign are at a disadvantage in today’s competitive environment. In years past, there may have been validity to the argument that only those who did business nationally or internationally needed a strong web presence, but that kind of thinking, today, is likely to put a company out of business, in a very short amount of time.

Unfortunately, this has created a fair amount of difficulty for many small business owners. Historically, these hard-working entrepreneurs were stretched to accomplish all of the many tasks required to keep them afloat. Most were not computer savvy and quite a few would actually be considered techno-phobic. They were not comfortable with computers taking over areas that had always been handled personally and believed that local web marketing could never take the place of the one-to-one networking that has always served Main Street, America. So, many were resistant to investing time and energy that was already in short supply into this new way of doing business.

For others, however, the concept of being able to realistically compete, globally, with companies much larger was immediately grasped and put to use. Many of these businesses were successful, but it still took awhile for the value of local internet marketing to catch on. Once it did, everything changed.

No longer does a business have a choice about whether to have an online presence or not. Technology seemingly changes by the minute, but local web marketing is always an option. Customers and clients may have let their “fingers do the walking” in the old days, but, now, they let their fingers do the typing to search for restaurants, shops, attorneys, doctors, dentists, plumbers, dog groomers and every other item or service imaginable as they walk or drive down the street. If Company X doesn’t pop up in their browser, then it is a safe bet that Company Y will, and that’s where their money will go.

The good news is that an effective local internet marketing program can not only keep pace with the competition, but actually take a business to new levels. The opportunities are endless for those willing to embrace the challenges and the advantages of technology.
