Just in case you are not clear what a landing page is, it is the first page a customer sees when they come to a site that you own from an advertising link. This is usually from an affiliate link in a blog post, article, or even search engine (similar to a doorway page). As we all know, first impressions are everything, and the web is no exception. What do you need a landing page for? You want to convey to the surfer that you have what they want, they can get it easily in one or two clicks, and they can do this with little or no distraction.

The first objective to designing a good landing page is “singularity of purpose,” which simply means: the main purpose of the surfer’s visit. What are they there to do? Buy a product, join a newsletter, fill out a survey, or click an affiliate link? If you do not know, then you can be sure that your surfers will not know. Lets assume, for the sake of this example, that you are selling an ebook. Lets also assume that the surfer is coming to your landing page from a link in an article that you wrote and submitted to an article directory. In this case, you have to decide whether you will send them directly to a sales page, or to your landing page first. This is a matter of judgement. Read over your article and decide whether or not the customer is presold on your product after reading the article. If the article explains multiple features of your product specifically, then it would be a good idea to send the surfer directly to your sales page instead of a landing page first.

Lets assume that the only time you mention your product specifically in the article is in the author resource box at the end. Since you haven’t presold them on your ebook at all, it is a good idea to create a landing page, and then ship them off to the sales page, which explains the ebook in detail. To achieve singularity of purpose, it is best to focus on the single main reason someone would buy your ebook. Take this reason and form it into a question. For example, if your ebook was a special weight loss program, you could write in bold letters, “Tired of Scam Diets? Wanna Lose Weight Now? Click Here To Find Out How!” If you read closely, you can see that I squeezed in another important facet of the landing page, a call to action. A call to action is just what it sounds like, it is telling the surfer to do something, and that something is to follow your link. In that one short sentence, you singled out the one reason they are here, and you told them what they needed to do in order to fulfill their need. That is a landing page.

The other parts of a landing page are graphics, fonts, video, and sound. Depending on your budget, and maybe skillset, you can use any combination of these to enhance the performance of your landing page. The main purpose for using any of these is to catch the surfer’s attention. Some landing pages use sound and graphics to do this, but the most effective way is catchy graphics. If you can get your surfer’s attention, then you will likely get yourself a clickthrough, at the minimum. If you can’t design the graphics yourself, then you can get a graphic designer to do it for you at a very affordable price. Go to one of the freelance auction websites and post a project describing exactly what you are looking for. Graphic designers will bid on the project and you can choose who gets to do it. Make sure that whoever you choose has a portfolio of past work for you to look at. For a nominal fee you can get a bunch of custom designed graphics for your landing pages, which will pay for themselves many times over if used properly.
