Reciprocal Links – Are They Important?

Reciprocal linking is without doubt one of the most disputed subjects in the SEO community. The reason for this is because they simultaneously can greatly contribute to your link network and also damage it pretty seriously.

Out of all this uncertainty, one thing is for sure – Google is more and more intransigent with irrelevant, automated link exchanges.

Now, exchanging links isn’t a banned practice by search engines all together, but they frown upon abusive, artificial manners.

There are 2 directions to follow

1. Seeking to build reciprocal links with no regard to the relevancy of your partner websites. Although positive changes in your rankings will start to show early on, in the long run, Google will retract some of the trust appointed to your website.

2. Staying in your field; although it takes more time to find and initiate quality link exchanges opportunities, keeping the relevancy level high will empower your sites position in that niche’s organic listings.

Still, keep in mind that it takes time to build a presence online and brand yourself. The good news is you build a solid foundation for selling your product or service.

After securing a considerable number of quality links pointing to your site, it’s advisable to diversify your linking sources and even include some low quality ones; and there is no easy alternative then reciprocal links.

You’re not only after back link numbers, but also telling the search engine what’s your website all about.

Junky back links are not a thing to worry about as long as you don’t return the favor.

A good start is to initiate reciprocal promotions.  This is where each party does reviews and interviews with the other.  After completion, they promote the content on their own sites, providing each partner with a whiter-then-snow (reciprocal) back link.

Reciprocal links are a great way of building legitimacy and trust when used in a transparent manner. Still it doesn’t have to be always two-ways.

Then again, this statement is contradicted by our incorrigible human nature that constantly cries the “what’s in it for me” exception.

To counteract this attitude, you have to create content that other marketers find useful, thus gratifying them before they start seeking bargains :) …  and when they (invariably) reference it, you enjoy the benefits of free back links.

Address your potential linking partner with trustworthy references to other related content before you mention your linking intentions. Become a good info provider not just self promoter.

Unfortunately most of the links requests out there are turned down. In order for your proposition to even be considered you have to feel, look, and sound like a human.

When to forget about Reciprocal Linking

What you should know about reciprocal linking networks:

1. The featured websites in these back link catalogues have at best 0 PageRank. Reciprocating with these low quality,( most importantly) irrelevant websites is easily spotted by Google.

2. These site’s reason of being is quick selling a product. Many of them are affiliate sites systematically disregarded by search engines in the SERP ranking competition.

3. Most of the time sites forming linking networks smell and taste as spam, e.g. keyword stuffing, hype copy, etc.

4. Good judgment implies that if you seek better organic rankings you should build it in the real market and not waste time in isolated communities.
