Here are a few Search Engine Optimization (SEO) tips that you can use to get you going. These tips will help you avoid common mistakes and oversights others have made and continue to make.
1. Submit to Google – Don ‘t use the Google link to submit your site to them! Why? Because it can take quite a while for them to spider and index your website. Instead, submit a sitemap file that details all of the important pages you want them to know about and include how often you think it should be revisited based on changing content. This will get your site pages indexed faster. You can still submit a sitemap file even if you have done it the other way without fear of doing harm.
2. What Pages has Google Indexed – in the Google search bar, type in ’site:domain’, for example, site:seoformywebsite.com Notice there is no space after the colon (:) and there is no “www” preceding the domain name. When you see the results, you will see the total number of pages that Google has indexed about this domain. Why is this useful? That way you can make sure that pages you have submitted, either through submitting a sitemap, or the old fashioned way, have indeed been indexed.
3. When writing your page tag, avoid using your domain name or any URL in there. Also avoid using punctuation and “stop words.’ They take up valuable space. Stop Words are those words that do not get recorded into the index in order to speed up search results. “The” is on of the biggest offenders. There’s no definitive list, so do a search on Google or whatever search engine you use for “stop words”.
4. If you own multiple domains, make sure you give a link to your other domains. You might as well get some free link juice.
5. Internal Linking Strategy – not only do you need a link form the Home page to your other pages, but your other pages need to (a) link to your Home page using your SEO linking strategy and (b) link to other pages within your site in the text on the page. Remember too that the link does not have to be the same name as the page title nor the file name.
6. Speaking of file names, according to Matt Cutts, one of the foremost Google Engineers, the preferred file naming convention is to use a dash or hyphen ( – ) between words. This allows the indexing algorithm to give easier credit to your filename. For instance, he claims that “mybigmouth” is not as easy to parse as “my-big-mouth” and thus Google can do a better job properly indexing that page.
7. Vary the anchor text you use to submit to directories or that is used for inbound linking. The reasoning is that it makes the link look more natural to the search engine and not as if an automated submission tool was used – which, violates the Google “terms of use” agreement and gets you banned most ricky-tic.
8. Make use of your image ALT tags. first of all it is there for sight impaired person to understand the image and secondly you are telling the algorithm more about your page.
9. If you don’t have your domain name yet, if at all possible get a “.com” extension and try to get one that would be the #1 keyword for your website, like “big-red-roses-california” or the like.
10. I could write a whole article or two about using Twitter (and I will), but get yourself a Twitter account. At least you can secure the name you want now and learn how to use it later.
I hope these tips will provide you with some benefit. If you put them to use, I can guarantee it.
