Online marketing for Beginners
Posted: May 29, 2010 |Comments: 0

Internet marketing for beginners is somewhat of an oxymoron. This is because while in theory the creative concepts behind website marketing is perhaps relatively uncomplicated, executing effective techniques is generally extremely difficult. This can even be tough for those who are to a certain extent skilled in the field of internet marketing.
One of the crucial fundamental steps for beginning an internet website marketing campaign is to produce a web site. For those who don’t have a website or have a very poorly designed website it is best to consider building or re-designing your website to adequately market your products. If you do not have skill in website design, there are a number of software packages that make it easy for those with no design experience to produce a functional website. On the other hand, using the services of a web designer is worth it for the reason that he can work to create an internet site which is eye-catching, functional and appropriate to your products and services. He could also show you how to include more sophisticated features on your website.
Banner ads are another standard choice designed for advertising your company on the web. Banner ads are advertisements which usually appear across the top of a website however it may also comprise smaller ads appearing in other places. Banner ads typically include graphics and text that entice internet users to click the advertisement. Once a prospect clicks on the ad, they are directed to your site. This kind of marketing is often very successful once care is taken to place the ads on high traffic sites which attract an audience who may have an interest in your products.
Sending out e-newsletters can also be an integral part of an effective online marketing plan. E-newsletters are essentially emails which contain a variety of information via educational articles, useful quizzes, pertinent advertising or any other information that is deemed worthwhile to the recipients of the e-newsletter. The importance of these newsletters is that they can be used as internet marketing tools which are not viewed by the recipients as an advertisement. One way to do this is to incorporate links or other soft sale approaches into the text of the e-newsletters. Still, care should be taken to hold these references nominal so the e-newsletter will not be viewed as spam.
Marketing via email campaigns is frequently another profitable piece of an internet website marketing promotion. Email marketing basically involves sending out emails to a group of people who may possibly be interested in your products and services. Care needs to be taken in sending out these emails avoiding being seen as unsolicited tending to be viewed as spam. One way to do this would be to only send out the messages to users who have requested inclusion on an contact list. Another way to try this is to provide value in the emails versus just including ads. This can be done by offering pertinent information within your emails and additional valuable information which may be of interest for the recipients of your email.
In conclusion, optimizing your site for search engines is a key piece of an internet website marketing campaign. search engines rank website pages based on quality and relevance for specific search terms. Countless internet buyers appreciate the effort by search engines like google and utilize these search engines like google to look for the top websites on a particular subject. Therefore the internet customers are likely to simply go to websites that rank well with search engines like google. Therefore if your website is not high ranking, you are not likely to get a great deal of traffic from internet users who utilize search engines like google to find relevant sites. High ranking websites are more likely to acquire the most traffic from search engines and all websites falling on the initial page of the search engine results will likely enjoy some degree of success in improving their traffic.

Unique Content is King, don\’t simply regurgitate someone else\’s work as search engines penalize duplicate content. Also unique, valuable and interesting content will boost your rankings and also please your visitors.
Keep adding content, Search Engines live on information and the more your site has additional information on it the more the Search Engines will keep coming back to index your information. Avoid simple and excessive minor changes as this wont help at all.
Never ever remove a page when it has been indexed, you have worked hard to get that page up and it will attract visits so work the content to support your site as opposed to deleting the complete page.
Emphasise your keywords with bold or italics, do not go silly though as a human still has to read the page and to much just makes it unreadable.
If your content is extensive split it up into a number of pages, more pages give more targetable keywords and therefore more pages that can be indexed which will mean more traffic.
Utilise your keyword(s) in your \”Title Tag\”, this is what shows in the search results on the engines and is your opportunity to draw the viewers attention to your page. Don\’t go overboard as this is blatant keyword spamming and will get you nowhere, keep the tag short (no more than 10 words) and always have your keyword(s) at the beginning of the phrase.
Always utilise your keyword(s) in the page name, separate them by a \’-\’ or a \’_\’ as both of these are recognised by the search engines to define your phrase. Also make sure that they are relevant to the topic on the page. It is a myth that hyphens are bad in Search Engine terms, under scores are treated the same.
Keep your keyword density to between 6-9%, write your text as you would hope to read it and write for a human not a search engine bot. Densities above this tend to look like keyword stuffing and the search engines do not like this.
Never mask your keywords by making the text the same colour as your background or by putting lots at the very bottom of your page with hundreds of lines of whitespace before them.
Always use anchor text when posting a link to your page and always use your keyword(s)
In your headings, for example H1 and H2 etc, always use your keywords. Again write for a human not a search bot.
Always apply \’ALT Tags\’ to your images and use your keywords, do not go stupid hear and treat them like you do your \’title tags\’
Utilise secondary keywords to support your Primary ones, less competitive words still bring that valuable traffic.
Do not bother with targeting misspellings, it may give you some hits but the impression that it gives on your web page can kill any creditability that you may have.
Inbound links are the votes for your web page/website and as such always aim to get links from related authority sites, ensure that these are also utilising you anchor text. Links from non related sites won\’t actually do your site any harm, they may even generate a few visitors but from a search engine optimisation point of view relevancy is important. The more inbound links that you get the better for you sites ranking.
Always use keyword specific text for your links, Search Engine bots cannot read images (other than the alt tag).
Internal links should always utilize anchor text, these are still counted by the search engines and always use your keyword(s) as opposed to, for example, \’page 1, 2 etc\’. Again relevancy of the pages text to your anchor text is also important.
Links should look as natural as possible, link buying/selling is a popular Internet process but gaining lots of incoming in a short period of time will raise alarm bells at the search engines.
Link directories still work but only submit to relevant high PR ones, DMOZ used to be the holy grail but has dropped in importance recently.
The fewer outgoing links on the pages that link to your site the better, for one the viewer can find your link easily and this also give weighting to the back link in search engine terms.
Inbound links from link farms etc will do you no harm as long as they are not reciprocated.
Link masking should never be used, same colour links as the background, single pixel links etc will all be seen as attempts to manipulate the search engines. This is a black hat technique and will get you removed from the indexes quickly.
Broken links will stop the Search Engine bots from revisiting as they cannot index what they can\’t get to.
A site map is a Search Engines favourite meal, a simple HTML one will suffice but a Google Site map is much better.
Search Engine Bots cannot index session ID\’s, always convert these to allow proper indexing.

Article Source: http://www.articlesbase.com/ – Overview of Search Engine Optimization For Beginners
Introduction – in simple terms, SEO is the process of improving the number of visitors to a website via search engines. By optimising your website with targeted specific key phrases used by your target customers, its possible for search engines rank your website more highly than similar competitive sites (that are not optimised). SEO should be viewed as a component of part of your overall professional internet marketing strategy and ethically used to improve the quality of your visitor experience, according to search engine guidelines and standards. The first step is to understand how search engines work….
Search Engine Basics – A search engine is the website that allows anybody to enter a search query for web site information from billions of web pages, files, video, images, music files. Most people have heard of Google, Yahoo, MSN but they’re also literally hundreds of other less well known specialist Search Engines also providing similar services. When you visit search engine, search results are traditionally displayed as blue links with a short description about the website. The results related directly to the users search query. Search engines evolved from the creation of large directory projects such as the DMOZ and the Yahoo Business directory. In the early to mid 1990s, search engines started using the web by crawling technology to trawl the ever increasing number of websites being developed. Today search engine results from google, yahoo and MSN also appeared in other minor search engines such as AOL. 80% of people find information on the Internet via a search engine because they are easy to use, flexible and provide a highly relevant links to the Internet.
How Do Search Engines Work? – Search engines use automated mathematical algorithms to rank and compare web pages of a similar content. The algorithms are highly complex of and rely on search bots continually trawling the Internet to an copy or ‘cache’ every webpage it visits. Search bots automatically look for specific information when visiting a web site such as the robots.txt file, sitemap.xml file, WHOIS data. They do this to find new content in microseconds and ensure their own listings presented to users are highly up to date and relevant. The data is stored by the search engine company in huge server data centres. The exact mathematical formulae of the search algoithm is jealously guarded by search engines, and so only analysis of historical data is used to make some general assumptions about how they ranking work. In addition, each engine publish some webmaster guidelines to give some general guidance about how to create a quality site and not use techniques that may get a website banned from its listings, by its moderators.
How Do Search Engines Present Relevant Results? – historically, the primary factor search engines used to rank web sites is the number of links a website has from other websites. These are known as inbound links. Over time search engines grew more popular and link farms developed to try and manipulate the results. To combat this the algorithms became more sophisticated. Today, links are less important and instead the textual relevancy of the words, paragraphs, pages and entire theme of website is critical achieving high search engine results. Search engines employ advanced anti spam factors to ensure that users are presented with the most relevant and quality results possible to reflect their search. More recently search engines are diversifying into different means of search, such as images, video, universal local search, product and price comparison as well as developing free online applications such as calendars, spreadsheets and word processing applications.
Key Phrase Analysis & Selection – the next step is to identify the keywords related to your product or service, that your target prospects are typing into search engines. Only then can begin to effectively strategise and design and optimise a website around your buyers needs and wants. Key phrase selection is the first and most important step in internet marketing. Why is this relevant?… Search engines use mathematical algorithms to compare web pages in order to rank these pages (based on a user search query). If you make incorrect assumptions (without researching) and target key phrases that don’t interest buyers, your website will fail. Conversely, if you target the right combination of keywords and phrases (before you even design your website), you will maximise your chances of higher search rankings and create an opportunity to sell. The bigger the market is for a particular product or service, the more competitive the online marketplace is for the related search terms. For instance, a quick check in Google reveals there are approximately 3.44 million search engine results for the term ‘mortgage’… yet only 0.217 million results for the phrase ‘discounted commercial mortgage quote’. In other words, the former is approximately 19 times more competitive in achieving a top search engine position than the later. By using keyword selection tools, advertisers can identify what search terms are not only popular but also how competitive they are. For instance, there are approximately 37.2 million people typing in ‘mortgage’ into all global search engines per year, yet only 0.8 million people typing in ‘commercial mortgage’. Keyword tools are invaluable in identifying a range of niche search terms that can be used to help optimise a website to achieve higher search engine rankings/ more website visitors. These tools can also produce derivates and synonyms, common spelling mistakes as well as produce a comparative competitiveness indices to see if a particular phrase is hard or easy to achieve top search listings with.
Once you have used your market knowledge and keyword tools to validate the search volumes of phrases, make a list, ranked by search volume, of your top 10 phrases. Invariably there are derivatives of your top ten target phrases. For instance, if your primary target term is ‘mortgage quote uk’, you might also identify ‘uk fixed rate mortgages’ and ‘mortgage broker uk’ as secondary phrases. Your prospects will type in hundreds of similar search queries to find a particular product or service. By creating optimised web pages with relevant content (that include these phrases), you maximise your chances of achieving increased search engine traffic. You will need to continually update the list and check your site logs and statistics and test using keyword tools. From this feedback, by checking which search phrases and entry pages were used to enter your site over time, you can easily see how successful your optimisation efforts are going. Key phrase selection should literally dictate the choice of domain naming for new sites, website design; navigational structure, unique selling points and linking strategy. Always add a couple of optional fields in your Contact Form to get feedback form your website visitors; ‘which search engine did you use to find our site?’ and ‘what search term did you use?’
Competitor Analysis – assuming you have a product or service that has some unique selling points, you need analyse your online competition so you can optimise your USP’s effectively. From an internet point of view you need analyse what other websites have achieved relative to your own website. For the first step is to identify who they are and make a list. This is simple enough by entering all of your primary and secondary key phrases into the major search engines and building up to a list. Of similar key phrases are usually bring up the same websites and you will very quickly understand what do you need to knock off the to the search engine to succeed. Updating this list on a regular basis is as important as the initial analysis. By obtaining feedback from search results you can constantly re-analyse competitors in terms of additional links or content they have added, or analyse how they have restructured and reorganised their website have to make it more search engine friendly. Review each site carefully to analyse your competitors on the following basis:-
Keyword / Keyphrase Density Analysis – make a list of your competitors keywords (as per above) to validate your own analysis.
Pagerank Checkers – seochat provide a useful tool to lookup pagerank of multiple sites, if you have a large number of competitors.
Supplemental Page Checker – use toosl to check the proportion of ‘less important, less highly ranked’ pages of ab website in Google’s ‘Supplemental Index’, versus its main index.
Search Engine Exposure – rather than visiting each of search engine individually, you can visit websites like netconcepts to provide tools to measure how many internal links a site has been able to get cashed in each major search engine.
Whois & Contact Forms – the WHOIS databases will allow you to match website owners with real world businesses that are (perhaps) using multiple sites to boost sales possibilities.
Site Age – By using archives.org WayBackMachine you can see copied of old pages of your competitors to see how they originally started years ago and then changed and improved their sites over time.
Quote Checker & Mystery Shopper – if your competitors are online quote system its very easy to compare your product price level against theirs. if they only use a contact form and telephone call back you could pretend to be a prospect requiring a quote.
Links Analysis – link building is a never ending process and never stops (because you competitors won’t). As the number of pages on your site increases you will find out sites (and in particular directories) will begin adding links to your site without your knowledge. To help achieve top rankings, you could begin to see how many quality links you need by looking at the number and type of links and ‘backlinks’ from your top 5 competitor sites. You can also use links checkers to see how many inbound links competitors have amassed since their conception by using tools such as xxx or xxxx. This is your general target for link volume to. Alternatively, you can o manually find this out type of information direct from search engines like Google by entering the following search queries:- your-competitor.com
Choosing a Domain Name – this section summarises the issues faced when deciding what to call your new website and how to manage the domain name….
Where to Buy a Domain Name? – if you haven’t already chosen your domain name for your new website a good place to start is NetworkSolutions. This is the largest registry of of domain names on the Internet and provides a service to check domain name availability. This is a reputable company that allows you to move an existing domain name settings (DNS) freely and ensures your privacy is also protected. Some domain name resellers have used sharp practice to make it difficult for you to move your domain name in the future, between different hosting companies. They have achieved this using financial penalties, technical over complexity, call centre queues and in some cases contractual small print (that could even lose your legal right to own the domain name). In most situations, resellers of domain names are often also hosting companies whose primary interest is to sell you more hosting space which is linked to the domain name itself.
Choosing The Right Domain Name? – it is preferable to choose a name which incorporates the primary search term or phrase you are trying to achieve high rankings for. Your new domain name has to reflect what you are selling or your company vision. There has to be no confusion in the minds of the user. In particular, if it is a type of site where you want repeat business, the name site has to be easily remembered, spelt – so the shorter the better. However, virtually all single word and popular commercial key phrase ‘expressions used to register a domain names have been already purchased by other people and domain name squatters. So choosing a domain name of the is always difficult and may involve the bidding on a domain from the second user market. If this is the case of, (just like buying a second hand used car), it is important to check the history of the domain name in terms of what it was used for in the past and whether it has been banned by search engines like Google. The last thing you want is to buy a domain name from the second user market, only to find Google has banned it in the past for not conforming to search engine guidelines. It is also always sensible to look at the country extensions of domains to check whether the domain name you are seeking has already been registered and made live in other countries. People tend to sometimes assume of that all websites are a ‘.com’. Therefore, if you can find a name where you can register the ‘.com’ as well as your local country extension, you will avoid confusion. Search engines also use the country extension of a domain name in their ranking algorithms to generate search results. As search engines also have various country orientated search websites, you must ensure your domain name reflects your country (particularly if your target market lives in one geography only).
Domain Names & Search Engines – if there is not usually a valid reason why you need dozens of domain names in order to sell the same product or service, then don’t… these are known as splash sites or doorway pages and are disliked by search engines to view this as a form of spamming. If the content of each website is unique and completely different, then separating by topics or localised geographic content makes perfect sense. Just remember it takes twice as long to promote and build and manage twice as many sites. Search engines ’search bots’ also automatically interrogate the WHOIS database to identify the owner on the website. Therefore, when you register your domain name, it is sensible to reveal your contact details on WHOIS database if you have nothing to hide.
Hosting Decisions – Hosting of a web site of is almost always overlooked by the beginners. There are thousands of hosting companies offering very cheap shared hosting space and the temptation is to just go to the easiest, quickest and cheapest option. Sometimes this attitude can destroy a web site of business. The general rule for choosing your hosting company is that you get what you pay for. Quality hosting is a critical to ensure your target market can actually access your site without it falling over every other day. Before ‘pointing’ your DNS settings to a new hosting shared server package, you must think through your technical requirements such as operating system support for database, online applications and scripts, stats, email access and the level of telephone support offered by the hosting company. To lean more about the technical issues surrounding hosting please visit our hosting section.
Writing Compelling Website Content – the most important ranking factors search engines employ is an analysis of the quality and relevance (and to a lesser extent the sheer quantity) of the text on any given webpage and collectively the website. We would recommend not over analysing a web page too much using software tools. Instead, put yourself in the mind of your prospects user and invest more time in creating an interesting, and informative, exciting and most importantly original content. Try and be obvious; you must tell the user what you think he wants to hear (based on your market research) as a users attention span when they hit your home page lasts for about 4 seconds before the click back in their browser and go on to the next one in the list. Therefore, use bullet points and simple sales messages or offers to summarise unique selling point sites. Remember, most web user skim websites until they decide they have landed on the site they want to learn more from. make sure you are also original – write in such a way that you are not or copying other web pages (or rewording). Duplicating content from other websites is a huge no no as it attracts duplication penalties from search engines or may risk having your site banned altogether. Writing content is the most difficult area of of what search engine optimisation and web design. To find out more visit out section on writing compelling content. Quantity of word count is also relevant; there is no right or wrong answer for the optimum number of words on a webpage. By analysing existing competitor web pages you’ll probably find that the average number of words ranges between 600 to to free 1000 words per page – any more and the spider may view of the page is too large and any less and the search was part of spider may view of the page as having to battle content to bother with.
Keyword Density Analysis – when targeting a certain keyword or keyphrase is essential that this appears within the text of the page at least once. If you insert this keyword or phrase too many times you run the risk that search engines view it as ‘keyword stuffing’ (which is a form of spamming). The ideal amount should by no more than three times per page. When optimizing a webpage actually this may depend on the volume of text on the page itself – the more text (words) on a page, the more times you can justifiably make reference to your key phrases. By using any number of free online tools to measure the exact percentage a keyphrase appears relative to the other words of page you can make simple judgments regarding what whether or not the page is correctly optimized. This simple principle is known as a keyword density. By analysing the keyword density of the home pages of your top 10 competitors you can establish quite quickly of what percentage of their keyphrase appears on their home page. For the lower and upper limits of this test will give you a safe range for your own home page in terms of the number of times of your primary keyphrase appears relative to the rest of the page. There is no right or wrong answer. The simplest solution is to write compelling, informative and interesting information for your web site visitors. It is important you placed your keyphrase as close as you can to the top of the page. Robots read the text from left to right starting at the top left hand regards the screen and working away its along the rows. By including your keyphrase near the top (as opposed to near the bottom of the page) you are attaching a higher keyword prominence to that phrase (relative to words that appear near the bottom of the page). To find out more visit out section on keyword density.
Design & website: Usability Good Practices – you will need to consider a range of web design issues in the context of implementing your online marketing strategy. To find out more about good design visit out section on website design. Highlights:-
Understanding of HTML – HTML is computer language that facilities the creation of internet web pages and is essentially a text file with a series of short defining codes around text.
Designing a Compelling Homepage – this is the most important page with the website as most uses will land on it, relative to other internal pages of your website.
Simple Navigation – the most important aspect of usability is a clean and simple navigational structure. Your structure must be consistent across all pages so users have a clear understanding of how to find their way between sections and back again.
Simple Page Structure – try and suspect the areas of your page up but into a top border, side border, bottom border and main body.
Accessibility – the Internet is developing standards such as WC3 for browser accessibility.
Implement a Linking Strategy – having an effective linking strategy is a critical part of search engine optimisation. Search engines measure ‘inbound links’ by the sheer volume (link popularity), link quality (basis of the webpage and website your link is posted from), link type and frequency of links added over time. A website with no inbound links will never rank higher than one with lots of links from other good quality sites. Implementing a reciprocal linking program requires patience, belief, tenacity and a very good understanding of the factors search engines used to rank web site links. Depending upon the existing ‘quality’ of your own website will dictate how you implement a linking strategy. Linking strategy is so important from the outset when launching new websites.
The Role of Meta Tags – a metatag is a hidden HTML element which helps to search engines described the page. Metatags help of a search engines described the contents of a web page. Search engines use snippets of information to present a listing in the results to users. This is a mandatory first step for webmasters when designing a web page. Without a Metatag your webpage will get cached properly. Historically, metatags were an important element of search engine optimization. However, today’s search engine algorithms concentrate more on content and popularity of site across the net. Metatags are only really useful to search bots create of snippets of information for their listings. To find out more visit out section on metatags which explains more about what each tag means and its impact on page ranking. Different search engines apply different importance to Metatags. For instance Google has stated it ignores the Metatag keywords as a ranking factor. Never ’stuff’ you targeted key words in the Metatag section at search engines to view this as a form of spanning and will act appropriately by banning your site. The golden rule is that your Metatags should help the user understand your webpage.
Statistics, Logs, Web Analytics – the use of ff page optimisation is critical. Statistics are a critical way to analyse your success. To find out more about statistical options please visit out section on website statistics. Website Statistics can provide you with a huge range of information was such as the behaviour of the users, lead and sale conversion ratios and which search engine customers used and what searched termed a typed into it. Web Design in Cholrey. A beginners guide
Web Design in Cholrey. A beginners guide
Unless you’re a computer geek you probably won’t know much about web design and why would you? Before you invest your money in anything whether it is a new car, a vacuum cleaner or a television you would usually try and find out a bit more about the product before you spent your hard earned cash. Here is a simple guide to what you need to think about……
What type of website do I need?
There a two types of websites, standard ones and E-commerce ones (where you can sell things on). You need to think whether you want to actually sell your products on the internet or whether you want a website to attract prospective customers.
How many pages do I need?
Some web designers charge per page. This may be the cheaper option if you only want one or two pages but how many professional websites do you see with just a couple of pages? Websites need to look good and be easy to navigate around. Squashing everything on to a couple of pages to save money might not be the best option.
Get it done professionally or do it yourself?
If you’re confident on the computer it might suit you to do it yourself. This option will be cheaper but can be time consuming and restrictive. Getting it done professionally (see Web Design in Chorley) may cost more initially but will give you a bespoke website that will stand out and work for you.
Keeping it up to date
Think about the future of your website. In time it will undoubtedly need updating, prices and offers will change, contact details may change, and today’s news will soon become old news. Ideally you should go for a package that allows you to edit some parts of the website yourself (see Web Design in Chorley), this will allow you to always keep your website current. E-commerce sites should always have this option to allow you to manage your own products.
Finding your website
It’s no good having a great website if it can’t be found. Pictures on a website look good but it is the wording within the site that helps your website get higher up on search engine results. A professional designer will design your website with this in mind (see Web Design in Chorley). Get your website up and running and see what position your website comes out in searches naturally before paying out again for SEO (search engine optimisation) services.

How to (and How Not To) Start your Own Website – Website Promoting for Absolute Beginners
How to (and How Not To) Start your Own Website – Website Promoting for Absolute Beginners
Before you read this article: I’m not an expert – this is just a short (and hopefully amusing) account of my own experiences with starting up a website! I WILL however give you some very useful links to the real experts at the end of this article BUT DON’T SKIP TO THE END JUST YET! I still have a lot of funny, insightful and useful information to give you : D
About 8 months ago I got a great idea! I’M GONNA MAKE A WEBSITE WITH FLASH GREETING CARDS THAT PEOPLE CAN SEND TO ALL THEIR FRIENDS!!! No, I did not think that I was the first person to get this idea. I’m not THAT naïve. However I was naïve in a lot of other ways about what it takes to build a website but I will get to that later.
Anywho, I thought this was a great idea for ME; I love making little animations in Flash, I love thinking up little stories, I love working for myself (as opposed to working for a boss – but you can read about that on my website!), and I thought it would be really cool to have a website that people from all over the world would visit and use. WOW! Sort of my 15 minutes of fame, I guess. AND if somewhere down the line I could make just a liiiiiiiittle money on it; GREAT! And I’m not talking millionaire money, just enough to cover my expenses. Okay okay, and maybe a liiiiiiittle bit more than that : ) Being able to afford red wine in bottles instead of cartons would be nice.
I started working on ideas (had lots of those) for ecards and then I started making the very first card (that I intended to send to my parents on their 50th wedding anniversary as a “test” to see if other people would think my cards were as funny as I did). Then a funny thing happened (no, not on the way to the Forum); my mother (who has absolutely no knowledge of the Internet or ecard websites or anything of an electronic nature and who knew NOTHING of my idea of starting my own ecard website) had cut out an article from their newspaper for me. It was the (success) story of a British artist, Jacquie Lawson, who at the tender age of 57 created an interactive flash Christmas ecard and emailed it to her friends and yada yada yada now has a VERY profitable subscription-based ecard website. And we’re talking MILLIONS OF DOLLARS here, folks!
I thought: “MY GOD! THIS IS A SIGN! This must be what I’m put on this planet to do! It’s my CALLING!” You see, my mom has NEVER EVER given me any newspaper clippings about ANYTHING before, so why now, why about this? MUST be a sign. I’m not a religious or superstitious person, but this was just a little too much to be coincidental, I decided! So I kept working my lower-part-of-my-body (no, not my legs!) off. I finished the first card JUST in time for my parents’ 50th wedding anniversary and emailed it to them on the morning of their big day. It was a big success : ) It was a card with two bored, cats picking their noses (I know! It doesn’t really sound like the kind of card you would send to your parents on their 50th wedding anniversary, but – what can I say? It worked great!) – check it out here: http://www.carlsencards.com/ecard-01-happy-birthday-bored-cats.htm. I have later changed the message to Happy Birthday.
So wanting to be serious about the whole thing, I needed a domain and I decided on the name carlsencards(.com) and purchased the domain. All the great keyword stuffed URLs were of course taken (always good to have your most important keywords in your URL!). So I thought I might as well promote my name a little. If that was a wise decision I still don’t know – jury’s still out on that one. Then again, who would have ever thought that “yahoo” or “google” were great names for websites?! I rest my case. But here is the first lesson to be learned; CHOOSE A LESS COMPETITIVE MARKET IF YOU CAN! Not something like… say; ECARDS! Search for “ecards” and you’ll get 34,500,000 results in google! Good luck getting to the top of THAT list! I don’t want to state the obvious, but… I do anyway; it’s also a good idea to choose a product, a service or a theme you are interested in yourself and LIKE working with.
For the next 6 months I worked on my site. Every weekend, holiday and vacation I got up around 6am so that I could get to work on my BIG IMPORTANT PROJECT! I had decided that 20 cards would be enough to launch the site. This ecards site is all about QUALITY not quantity, you see. I put a lot of work into each card; first the story, then drawing and animating, then composing and recording the music and sound effects, and finally putting the card on my site. A card takes 2-4 days to make, so it took me about 6 months to complete the 20 cards I thought would be enough for starters.
I intended to keep making cards after the big, GRAND opening, so the site would continue to grow and my users (“my users” – Oh, I like saying that: MY USERS! I have USERS!) would have new cards to send every time they visited my site. And – for your information – I still make cards. Every free minute I have is spent working on my ecard website. But I like it.
And here’s another lesson to be learned (but I already knew that); people expect websites to change, be updated and grow ALL THE TIME. It’s like children! You can’t just have a baby and then expect it to grow up all by itself. Or so I’ve heard. I don’t have children myself. Not the human kind, anyway! Only the furry, four legged kind with whiskers. But they need caring and looking after, too!
Then the big day arrived; I WAS READY TO LAUNCH MY SITE. And here’s where I was REALLY naïve. I thought that all I had to do was send ecards to all my friends, and they would love the cards and find them utterly cute and funny and they would send cards to all THEIR friends who again would love my cards and send cards to… I think you get the picture.
Lesson to be learned: That happens like once in a blue moon. Or once in 10 blue moons. Okay it happened for Jacquie Lawson. It happens SOMETIMES in real life. But it certainly didn’t happen in my real life. Only in my dreams!
Hmmmm, what to do, what to do… I definitely wasn’t ready to give up just yet (another useful lesson: DON’T GIVE UP!). So I searched the Internet and found a site that listed free stuff of all kinds. Hey, I have free stuff on my site, maybe I can get them to link to my site. Wow, they were way ahead of me on that one; they actually had a button that said “Submit site”. Great! I submitted my site, but – oh – what’s that? “Reciprocal link” – what is that? Oh, so I have to link to you, and you’ll link to me. Hmmmm, sort of I’ll show you mine if you’ll show me yours. Oh, but that’ll ruin my great design. There must be other ways.
Lesson number… I have lost count! Anyway, lesson to be learned; reciprocal linking is hard to avoid. I have later learned that one-way links are better, but to get things started and to get people to visit your wonderful site, it’s a good idea to find sites that will link to you and generate some traffic. And so what if you have to put a couple of little buttons and text links on your site. So I exchanged links with a free stuff site, and – WOW – people OTHER than my 20 or so friends visited my site!
We’re not talking several thousands a day. Actually not even hundreds. But around 60-80 a day, which is way better than 3-4. Now we’re cooking. Yes, but the cooking started to slow down after a week or so. Okay, now what? I guess I just have to find a couple more sites to exchange links with.
So again I searched the Internet. Lo and behold, there are lots of sites that list free stuff out there! And to make a long, boring story a little shorter; I exchanged links with about a dozen free stuff sites and I did get a little traffic. But there must be other ways….
DIRECTORIES! There are (probably) hundreds of thousands of directories where you can get listed and most do not require a reciprocal link. Or a yearly fee to list your site. Again I spent hours researching and googling (I know google don’t like us to use that word – to “google”, but it’s such a GOOD word) the words “free directory submit site”. And if there was one thing I learned, it was that I STILL HAD A LOT TO LEARN ABOUT PROMOTING A WEBSITE!
SEO! What the hell is see-oh? Oh, it’s S-E-O! Search Engine Optimization – still have no idea what that is. So I researched – isn’t the Internet a wonderful invention? Oh my; keywords, href title tags, alt tags, text content, file names, keyword density… I thought I had done everything I needed to do in that department by just placing some nice keywords in the meta tags (you know; title, description and keywords)! But, noooooooooo, search engines don’t care about that anymore. Now you have to put your keywords into all those other tags AND the content. And you have to choose your keywords VERY carefully (google has some nice tools that can help you research and find the right keywords – link at the end of the article). Aha! Wish I had known that BEFORE I started building my website. Another very useful lesson! I won’t explain exactly how to do all this, but I’ll give you some links to great sites, that explain this much better that I ever could. I just want you to know that this is something you have to do.
Okay, so that’s it! NOW I’m all set to attract millions of visitors. Well, what’s your pagerank, Martine? My what? My “pagerank”? Where can I get that? Can I buy it on ebay? Oh no, pagerank is something you EARN so to speak. But how? Get lots and lots of QUALITY inbound links – preferably one-way links (meaning that THEY show you theirs, but YOU don’t have to show them yours! Well, actually THEY show everybody YOURS, but you don’t have to… You know what I mean). Google likes that! And you do what google likes. Because most people find sites by searching google. And they seldom get past page 1 or 2 in the google results. So how DO you get to the top of google’s search results?
Good question. Very good question. Very few people know a lot about that and a lot of people (like me) know very little about it. But people like me (who know just a little) have a good excuse, because IT’S A SECRET! Only the people who work for google – actually only SOME of those people REALLY know what google likes the most and thereby goes to the top of the list. And you know what? Doesn’t pay to try to find out, because they CHANGE IT all the time!
Google uses something called algorithms to determine which sites to put on the top of the list (if you’re interested you can find tons of information on that on the Internet). And they keep changing these algorithms. Yes, I think that’s really sneaky, too. But it does serve a purpose. Otherwise clever – even more sneaky – webmasters would find out and take advantage of this knowledge and get THEIR websites to the top of the lists even though their sites are not the most relevant. See the point? So I guess that’s okay. But it certainly doesn’t make my life easier. I have to guess and try out different keywords and keyword placements and keyword density until I just give up and say “That’ll do little piggy. That’ll do!” That was a quote from “Babe”, and if you’re not familiar with that movie; RENT IT, BUY IT, SEE IT!
Another thing google likes, is a nice, simple sitemap. It makes google’s job a lot easier. But that’s no biggie, this site will do it for you: http://www.xml-sitemaps.com – and let’s all give a big hand to xml-sitemaps.com for helping us out with that one.
So, to sum it all up:
- optimize you site (this is the SEO part) – doing this from the very beginning is a lot easier than after you have created 167 pages! I know from experience. And this includes making a sitemap.
- get lots of inbound (one-way) QUALITY links (that’ll give you pagerank and a higher position on google’s search results). Directories are good. But don’t get them all at once; getting too many links too fast will seem like spam to google, and you don’t want that to happen!
- get some links to your site that can generate some traffic (it’s okay to reciprocate some links – I think!). And it’ll be good for you self esteem to see that your site gets visitors that are NOT closely related to you : )
- and do what I’m doing right now; write funny/informative/useful articles and submit them to sites all over the Internet. And remember to include your name and URL : ) That’s sort of the whole purpose of doing this. Not that I didn’t write this article to amuse you. I did. Of course I did!
And finally – and this just might be the best and most important advice of all; STAY THE HELL AWAY FROM THE “Guaranteed 100,000 Visitors ! Very Cheap Traffic” SITES! 100.000 unique visitors – YEAH, RIGHT! Don’t do it! It’s a scam, it’s a waste of money and google doesn’t like it! You may even get your site banned from google by doing that. I know it’s tempting, but so is robbing a bank and getting million in 4 minutes. But it doesn’t pay in the long run.
So, I guess that’s it. I hope you had fun reading about my experiences promoting my website. And I hope you learned a little as well. Good luck with your website!
And here’ s the list of REALLY useful sites with REALLY useful information that I used (and still use) promoting MY website:
Great tools:
http://www.iwebtool.com
http://www.selfseo.com

http://www.google.com (search for “KeywordToolExternal”)
Lists of directories:
http://www.submithelper.com

… so has my website become a great success with thousands of visitors every day? Well, my site is still very new, so it’s too early to say. But I hope and I believe and most of all I still work hard on promoting my site and adding new cards every week! So who knows? Beware, Jacquie Lawson, there’s a new kid in town!

Internet Marketing For Beginners
Internet Marketing For Beginners
Internet Marketing for Beginners
Internet marketing for beginners is somewhat of an oxymoron. This is because while in theory the concepts behind Internet marketing might be quite simple, executing effective strategies can be extremely difficult. This can even be tough for those who are quite experienced in the world of Internet marketing. With this in mind, this article will attempt to explain the concept of Internet marketing for beginners and will outline some basic strategies which can help a business owner to launch his own Internet marketing campaign. We will cover concepts such as creating a website, placing banner ads, sending out e-newsletters, orchestrating an email marketing campaign and optimizing your website for search engines.
One of the most basic steps for starting an Internet marketing campaign is to create a website. If you don’t have a website or have a poorly designed website you should consider creating or re-designing a website to adequately market your products. If you do not have experience in web design, there are a number of software packages which make it simple for those with no design experience to create a functional website. However, hiring a web designer is worthwhile because he can work to create a website which is attractive, functional and suitable to your products and series. He can also help you include more advanced features on your website.
Banner ads are another popular option for advertising your business on the Internet. Banner ads are advertisements which typically appear along the top of a website but it may also include smaller ads in other locations. Banner ads typically include graphics and text which entice Internet users to click on the advertisement. Once a user clicks on the ad, they are directed to your website. This type of advertising can be very effective when care is taken to place the advertisements on high traffic websites which attract an audience who may have an interest in your products.
Sending out e-newsletters can also be a part of an effective Internet marketing strategy. E-newsletters are essentially emails which may contain a variety of information including informative articles, useful quizzes, relevant advertising or any other information which is deemed worthwhile for the recipients of the e-newsletter. The importance of these newsletters is that they can be used as marketing tools which are not viewed by the recipients as an advertisement. One way to do this is to incorporate links or other soft sale approaches into the copy of the e-newsletters. However, care should be taken to keep these references minimal so the e-newsletter is not viewed as spam.
Email marketing campaigns can be another successful aspect of an Internet marketing campaign. Email marketing essentially involves sending out emails to a group of individuals who may be interested in your products and services. Care should be taken in sending out these emails to avoid sending emails which are unsolicited and will be viewed as spam. One way to do this is to only send out the emails to users who have requested inclusion on an email mailing list. Another way to do this is to provide value in the emails as opposed to just including advertisements. This can be done by offering relevant advice in your emails and other useful information which may be of interest to the recipients of the email.
Finally, optimizing your website for search engines is a critical aspect of an Internet marketing campaign. Search engines rank websites according to quality and relevance for particular search terms. Many Internet users appreciate the effort by search engines and use these search engines to find the best websites on a particular subject. This means the Internet users are likely to only visit websites which rank well with search engines. Therefore if your website is not high ranking, you are not likely to generate a great deal of traffic from Internet users who use search engines to find relevant websites. Top ranking websites are likely to obtain the most traffic from search engines and all websites falling on the first page of the search engine results will likely enjoy some degree of success in improving their traffic.

Three Great Internet Marketing Tips for Beginners
Three Great Internet Marketing Tips for Beginners
Start by Building a List
Everyone needs a list in the Internet marketing business. It’s the foundation that your success will be partially built upon. You do not want to try to market through your blog or website alone and you certainly do not want to be spamming people with unwanted emails. Therefore, you build a list. There are many ways you can do that and I will be covering some of that in future articles. The one excellent way to build a list is to offer excellent content whether it is on your website or in a newsletter. You could also, do webinars, create videos, record audio interviews, interview for them etc. The ‘content’ part might not reap you immediate financial rewards but it will go a long way in making you more money in the long-term. This is one of the foundational Internet marketing tips for beginners. Read on for another way to help with list building.
Create a Fantastic Squeeze Page
To effectively build a list you need an excellent squeeze or capture page. This tells people what you have to offer them and why they should fork over their name and email to you. You need to offer them something solid, not junk. Do not offer people something that is available anywhere they go in the Internet. Make a clean uncluttered squeeze page whose only goals are to get people to opt-in. Make sure your opt-in box is highly visible and easy for people to use. This is a great way to draw subscribers to your list.
Target Your Keywords Effectively
Make sure the keywords you are targeting are not too broad. Do not choose Internet marketing and hope to rank #1 in Google for that. It will never happen. Choose a tighter focus such as Internet marketing strategies or even tighter keywords. Go for long tail keywords – phrases with three or more words – when possible. Using the right keywords can make all the difference in the amount of traffic you bring in and the amount of subscribers that come on board. When you use targeted keywords for your niche, you also help to brand yourself, which is another great Internet;marketing tip for beginners I talk about on my blog as well.

SEO Web Design Secrets: Search Engine Optimization Tips For Beginners
SEO Web Design Secrets: Search Engine Optimization Tips For Beginners
SEO web design is a skill that can be learned, though most search engine optimization for beginners courses dwell too much on linking strategy as opposed to web site design per se. There are many ways for most normal people to get an improved search engine ranking, and secure a high search engine listing, and while linking is important, good on-site SEO is also necessary.
Although it might not seem like it, getting a good listing on Google or any of the other search engines is not as difficult as many like to claim. There are rules to follow, and if you play the game properly then the outcome should be in your favour. The tips provided in this article are not really secrets as such; although many people offer to divulge marvelous secrets to you, all they are giving you is stuff that people have been using for years.
So you won’t get any secrets here. I have nothing hidden away that I don’t want anybody to know, and if I had I wouldn’t tell you about it! Would you? If you had some secrets that were so valuable that they were making you money, would you give them away free in an article like this one? Of course you wouldn’t!
So here are my not-so-secret tips on getting a good listing in Google and improving your search engine ranking. You likely know a fair bit about meta tags, and have been informed that most are not used by search engines. Well let me tell you something. If you ‘Google’ Article Services you will finds my website right at the top in the #1 position for that keyword. Check the description that Google provides right under the title: that is exactly as it is in the ‘Description’ tag that I have on the site. So don’t let anybody tell you that Google don’t use the Description tag, because they do. So do Ask and MSN (now Live Search), and Yahoo also uses it, but not the whole thing exactly as written.
The Keyword tag is another matter. Google aren’t interested in what you tell them the keywords are: they decide the relevance of the page themselves from the text and Alt tags on the page. Google no longer need keyword repetition to understand what you are writing about: they have the LSI algorithm now, that will determine the meaning of your page from the character strings it contains. The algorithm is programmed to calculate a relevance factor from the vocabulary you use in relation to the rest of the vocabulary on the page. However, back to SEO web design, and some search engine optimization tips for beginners.
In addition to the Description meta tag, the HTML tags you should use are:
1. The Keywords meta tag. Although little used it only takes a second to put in, and does no harm. There is evidence that some search engines might use it. The rest of the meta tags are pointless.
2. The TITLE tag. This is the title of your web page, and should contain the primary keyword for the page. Each page should be written round one primary keyword that relates to the subject of your website or niche.
For example, if your niche is costume jewelry, the primary keyword for your home page would be ‘costume jewelry’. You could then have a number of ’silos’ with a main page title each. The title of one main silo page could be ’simulated diamonds’ and the first page title of that silo could be ‘garnets’. All of these are the primary keywords for their respective pages. Another silo could be ‘colored gem stones’, with that as the primary keyword for the main silo page, and that for your first sub-page in that silo could be ‘citrine’. And so on.
Each page must have one primary keyword, and it should be included in the Title tag for that page. The Title tag does not appear in the body of the article, but in the HTML between the two HEAD tags in your html.
3. The H tag. These are heading tags, with H1 being the most important. The heading for each main section in your page should be contained within H1 tags, and many pages have only the one set of such tags. Subheadings, containing secondary keywords, should be contained within H2 tags, and so on. Thus, in the example above, the heading or your garnets silo could be could be ‘Garnets in Costume Jewelry’ in H1 tags.
After an introduction to garnets, you could then have an H2 heading containing ‘The Source of Garnets: Where Garnets Come From’, then another passage of text headed ‘How Garnets are Cut for Costume Jewelry’, again held in H2 tags.
4. The ALT attribute. Use ‘Alt = ‘ within the Img tags of your images and graphics. This lets the search engines know what the graphic is about: search engines do not read graphics, and the Alt attribute offers you the chance to use your graphics meaningfully with respect to SEO web design.
TEXT FORMATTING
That’s all you have to worry about regarding the HTML tags. You text formatting can be used to emphasize to search engines what the important text on your page is. Thus, if you use bold text, underscoring or italics, they indicate the important words and phrases. Thus, use the STRONG and U html tags in your heading.
WRITE NATURALLY
Don’t worry too much about your keyword density (KD), other than having to much. Too high a KD could harm you if Google thinks you are making unnecessary use of them. Write naturally for human readers, and not robots. If your text reads well and makes it clear what the subject of the passage is about, then you will be fine. In my writing I ignore the concept of KD altogether. I use my keywords as indicated above, and also in the first and last 100 characters on the page (or at least in the last paragraph somewhere).
Good SEO web design is not keyword fixated, but contains good contextually related vocabulary that the LSI algorithm can use to target the relevance of the page to the search term being used by somebody using the search engine to find information. That’s all a keyword is: a term used by somebody looking for information. If you cannot work without a target KD, then I would go for a max of 1% with plenty associated vocabulary, synonyms. Related terms, etc.
Thus, if you are writing a 400 word article on the keyword ‘losing weight’, use these words four times, not twelve (1% not 3%)
None of these are web design secrets, and I doubt if there are any such secrets left any more. I suppose the only thing even approaching a secret here is that my description meta tag is copied exactly by Google in the listing for my #1 placed website. That allows you to determine how Google users see the description of your site in the listing.
I have several more SEO web design tips to offer, but these will be the subject of another article. In the meantime if you implement these search engine optimization tips for beginners, then you should soon see an improvement in your website’s search engine ranking.

7 Online Marketing Tips For Beginners
7 Online Marketing Tips For Beginners
Here are 7 online marketing tips for beginners. We all have to start somewhere and there is a learning curve for selling information and products on the internet. That is why I wanted to provide you with the best online marketing tips that I have developed.
1.) An online marketing tip that I would advise everyone to take is to take some time to learn a system. Almost every system can produce results. Donít go from one system to the next. Take some time to learn one system.
2.) Take action! People get stuck with ìanalysis paralysis.î Once you have settled on a system and learned the basics, donít be afraid to take action. Get out there and do it. If you make mistakes, so be it. You will have setbacks, but donít worry about it. Fail fast and fail forward.
3.) Learn to write sales copy. Perhaps the most important online marketing tip I can give you is to learn to write sales copy. There may come a time when you outsource this task to professional copywriters, but knowing the basics yourself will allow you to evaluate their work. Besides, you probably canít afford to spend thousands of dollars right now on a professional, so learning to do it yourself is important.
4.) Learn to write articles quickly. One of the best ways to promote your products is to write articles like this one and submit them to directories. But, if it takes you 2 hours to write a single article, you will not be able to put out the quantity needed to make money online. One expert has a system down where he can write articles in just 7 minutes. While it will probably take you more than that at first, strive to write at least two an hour. They donít have to pass your 10th grade English teacherís muster, they just have to send people to your site.
5.) Consider Pay Per Click. PPC is the quickest way to deliver traffic to your website. However, if you donít learn how to do it, you can lose your shirt. If you have a product that you want to start selling right away, PPC is the best avenue for you. But learn the ins and outs before you bid on high priced, high trafficked keywords.
6.) Create processes. You shouldnít re-invent the wheel every time you create a new product or a new web site. Instead, have a specific system. Develop your own guide book to setting up a blog or promoting an ebook. Not only will this save you time in the long run, it will also help you make more money. This is one of those online marketing tips that so many marketers miss.
7.) Create value. Donít think that internet marketing is all about taking your customerís money. Donít think of your customers as ìmarks.î Develop relationships with them and provide value to them. Itís much harder to get an initial customer than have someone who trusts you buy from you again.
So, there are seven online marketing tips to get you going. Now, go get started!
