When starting a website to earn an income, you may have learned of a plethora of possibilities for generating that income. One of the programs that may have been recommended is affiliate marketing, but do you really understand what it is? How exactly does affiliate marketing work?
Affiliate marketing, a marketing practice based on receiving rewards for each visitor you bring to another company’s affiliate marketing effort. Used in conjunction with other marketing methods, the affiliate method focuses on driving traffic from one website to another. This is done through banner ads and other types of links. Once the affiliate program owner website has earned money from the traffic sent to their site, the original web owner is compensated.
HOW DO YOU GET STARTED?
So, how do you make money from affiliate sites? There are some key things to remember. When starting a new site, choose a topic you are interested in. Designing a website where you actually have an interest in sharing information and your opinion will keep you motivated to keep contributing to it. You may not make as much income this way over the short term, but your ability to stick with it has more potential for pay off in the long run.
If you already have an existing site, use of affiliate products will increase traffic and give you new content. This will not only help you generate traffic from content, but will give you an increased ranking in the search engines. When adding affiliate products, you’ll need to determine what works best for your niche market. Are they more likely to purchase big ticket items or smaller ticket items.
Don’t use just one merchant’s products on your site. Try using 3 to 4 different merchants. This provides some variety for your customers and will also give you insight into what your customers prefer.
WHERE TO FIND AFFILIATE PRODUCTS
When looking for the best affiliate programs online, look for a site that will give thorough reviews on each affiliate marketing program. Make sure that you research whether it is globally accepted and gives real time statistics. You will also want to find out how long it has been in business, the cookie tracking, payment frequency and contact information. User reviews should also give good feedback about whether the program is a good fit for your site. Some of the best programs are found on affiliatelink.com, where reviews are easily accessible.
ClickBank, Commission Junction and PayDot.com are all locations to find affiliate products. You’ll need to sign up for an account with each and then it’s simply a matter of selecting a category and reviewing the affiliate products within that category.
Your affiliate products should be complimentary to your site. This is effective when you consider that an “affiliate” is defined as “to bring into close association or connection”. The websites that are the hosting sites specialize in finding affiliate products that are closely related to what their website’s goals are. For example, a pet beds website may have affiliate products on dog training, pet insurance or pet medicines.
HOW DO YOU GET PAID
The most common form of payments include cost per sale or cost per action, with the most prevalent being cost per sale. Compensation for the cost per action (ie, requesting information) or cost per sale (ie, purchasing an item), the payment is basically a commission.
Working with some patience and practice, you will eventually get that elusive dollar sign in your website marketing campaign. Once you have found the best affiliate products or services for your passion, you will be able to start generating a steady income; then you can move on to new ventures.

Redesigning of your website is all about understanding your audience and your medium in order to improve your Internet presence.
There are several compelling reasons to redesign your website. A website redesign is most commonly needed for the following reasons:
a. A change in your brick and mortar business and/or your online business model.
b. Growth and expansion into new areas.
c. Updating for Internet technology such as new browsers, increasing screen sizes and faster connection speeds.
d. To increase your search engine presence
e. To replace an out-of-date or unprofessional looking website.
Whatever the reason, a redesign is an extraordinary opportunity to redefine your online business presence and propel your website forward, ahead of your online competitors.
Break Down the Functional Parts of Your Website
The best method for examining all the parts of your website is to create a sitemap. A sitemap is a visual diagram of all the links and pages of your website. Let’s take a look at an example for a property development company’s sitemap.
In the sitemap illustrationabove we have sectioned the property development website into 5 parts.
1. Administrative Links
2. Hot Links
3. Global Links
4. Sub Links
5. Footer Links
Your Administrative links should contain the general information for your business. You want to keep these links separated from your Products or Services links so your visitors won’t have to browse through your administrative company links such as Mission Statement when looking for your products or services.
Hot links are the visual cues that act as hot points or your important Call-to-Action areas. These are essentially mini-advertisements that call attention to specific areas of your website. In the illustration above there are hot links for Inquiries, News, and Events. Our website client wanted to generate sales leads and provide news and events regarding new developments for retail and sales related real estate.
The naming of your links is also an important factor. If you are a medical office or a lawyer, you may want to name your Inquiry link as Confidential Inquiries, whereas a contractor would use the link term Free No-Obligation Inquiries.
Global Links are the primary links for your services and products. This is where you should place information for what you do, how you do it, what you provide, what you sell and so on. These are your bread and butter links. Bread and butter links are the hyperlinks and information that generate your leads and business income.
Sub Links are where you will want to prioritize this information. Think of additional ways to support your products and/or services. Here are some great ideas for doing this.
a. Create Case Studies pages
b. Create pages for Testimonials or Accolades
c. Create pages for your Associations or Certifications
d. Create a Client List or Client Industries Served list
e. Create Photo or Project Gallery pages
f. Create a repository page for Media. This provides you a place in your website to post links, video, audio, articles, Word documents and PDF files for any news or information relating to you or your business.
g. Define what makes your business unique.
Footer Links can be an extremely important area of your website and are often overlooked. This is where you can insert jump links to your locations pages, post phone numbers, fax numbers, emails, and address information.
* Note: If you are a local business and want local exposure on Google and other major search engines, it is important that you list your full local business address in the footer of your website.
Challenge, Focus Test and Question each Part
Once you complete your sitemap you should research similar websites for your business. Compare your navigation tabs and the names for these tabs to other websites.
Ask yourself the following questions. Have I covered all my navigation bases? Have I created opportunities for developing specific pages?
If you were a home remodeling contractor you might want to consider multiple galleries for your project photos versus displaying all your construction projects in one gallery page. Multiple pages provide you more chances for visitors to find your website in search engines. Every page in your website is an opportunity to tell search engines what your website is about.
Ask your web developer to use different and unique title and description meta-data in the code of your individual pages. In the case of a home remodeling contractor website, there are opportunities to have multiple gallery pages for kitchens, sunrooms, room additions, decks and so on.
Using Meaningful Content
Whether you are a lawyer, baker or candle stick maker there are two extremely important reasons for your website to contain meaningful text or copy.
1. Great copy supports and defines the essence of your website. Great copy can be defined as well formed sentences that convey your ideas and information in a meaningful way to your online visitors.
2. Great copy (website content) will earn you back-links and heightened attention from search engines. Do not write copy specifically for search engines; rather write copy for human visitors, but be judicious in the way you form your sentences. Also ask your web designer to place interior links within your pages where appropriate.
Here’s an example using two short paragraphs of home page content.
THIS COPY IS OK
a. Our product line seamlessly combines function and elegance, and includes: home and office furniture, accent chairs and pieces.
THIS COPY IS BETTER
b. The Williamson extensive product line seamlessly combines function and elegance, and includes: home entertainment furniture, home office furniture, accent chairs and accent pieces.
In the second example they mention their company name and use complete phrasing for their products.
Instead of “home and office furniture” they used more descriptive phrases like “home entertainment furniture” and “home office furniture”. These two phrases could also be linked to any relevant interior pages to improve user navigation and also compliment your website’s search engine optimization.
Put all these Parts Back Together in a Meaningful Way
Now that your sitemap is complete, the next phase is to incorporate this information into a website redesign. Consider the following points before you finalize your website design.
1. Consider whether a vertical navigation or horizontal navigation schema works best for your website (some websites have both).
2. Be sure your most important information is placed above-the-fold.
Above-the-fold is a newspaper advertising term that refers to strategically placed images and text in the upper most section on the front of the newspaper page.
Think for a moment about the T. V. style box, newspaper dispensers pioneered by Al Neuhart, Founder of USA Today. When the newspaper is folded and placed in the front-facing box you can be sure that the editor will place the most attention grabbing photos and compelling headlines above-the-fold’. This directly impacts how many papers will be sold.
This same methodology applies to your website redesign. If your website does not capture your online visitors in the first few seconds after landing on your website, then they will simply move on to another website.
3. Humans read information left to right and down the page. Be sure there is an orderly flow of images and information on your home page and interior pages.
4. Be sure there is good use of white space or black space. Don’t insist that your website designers cram text, graphics or visuals in every nook and cranny of your web page.
A professional graphic design person or web designer can help you develop a good look and feel for your new website, but don’t leave this task completely in their hands. Ask questions along the way and do your research. If they suggest a vertical navigation using red links instead of blue… then ask them why.
At the end of this process you will have done your necessary due diligence for having a successful redesign that will carry you forward over the next few years!

If websites have one overarching goal it is to create confidence in whatever the website is promoting and who’s promoting it. It doesn’t matter if it’s a product, a service, a sales campaign, or an idea, if the presentation is not minimally credible or optimally motivational, then it fails as a means of marketing communication.
Communicate to the Subconscious Mind
Branding is often thought of as a marketing strategy reserved for major consumer product companies, but the fact is all businesses are brands that are either cultivated so they blossom, or let go-to-seed like a garden full of weeds.
Marketing neophytes often think of branding only in terms of some physical manifestation, like a logo, but a brand is the full complement of residual impressions resulting from all the experiences associated with a product, service or company. And today, the online experience is a vital venue for creating those experiences.
By using video, the marketer has the opportunity to tap into the audiences’ subconscious mind, the buried remnants of both remembered and forgotten experiences; the kind of experiences that form attitudes, prejudices, and preferences that inform our decisions, most importantly our buying decisions.
Where Businesses Go Wrong
Where businesses go wrong is settling for only the obvious, the logical, and the rational. Brands are formed in the subconscious, so if your marketing communication doesn’t reach the subconscious mind then it is not establishing or enhancing the brand in any meaningful effective long-term way.
What video does, when done right, is communicate on both the obvious and subconscious levels, making it the ideal Web-communication vehicle for creating a powerful brand experience, but only if you understand how to use the presentation and performance elements available.
Considering how powerful a tool Web-video can be, it amazes me how so many normally intelligent business people can opt for second-rate presentations. The do-it-yourself and user-generated efforts compete for the booby prize with the mindless corporate drivel – they all miss the point: a persuasive motivating presentation must communicate on multiple levels.
How To Deliver A Brand Story
We like to refer to developing, delivering, enhancing, and managing a Web-based brand, as The Brand Story Process. By thinking of your brand in terms of a story rather than just some graphical image, or nebulous mission statement, you avoid many of the pitfalls associated with ineffective branding.
A story, any story, has certain fundamental elements:
1. A storyline, plot or arc that moves the audience from skeptical Web-surfers to loyal customers;
2. A hero, who vicariously represents the audience and their dilemma in satisfying their subconscious needs or desires;
3. A villain, who represents the problems, obstacles, or challenges that confront the audience in satisfying those subconscious needs;
4. An agent of change that represents your company’s ability to resolve the dilemma by providing a solution to satisfying those needs;
5. And a format that structures the presentation in a series of procedural or serial video episodes, that establishes and enhances the brand image, all while delivering literal and subliminal benefits.
Storyline – The Arc of Transformation
At the heart of your brand story is your marketing message and that message must invoke change: a transformation from dissatisfaction to satisfaction, and not just a presentation of features and benefits.
Your brand storyline puts what you offer into context, and illustrates the achievable results through onscreen surrogates acting out the audience’s hidden agendas. A competitor can always cut your price or add new features, but neither tactic can overcome brand loyalty based on satisfying subconscious emotional needs.
Hero As Brand Messenger
It’s not just the message; it’s the messenger. There is no substitute for the human being. No avatar, cartoon character, or computer-generated equivalent will provide the subtlety and nuance required to communicate on the verbal, visible, and subconscious levels.
The one caveat is that real people can be ‘too real’ for their own good. We rarely recommend using company executives in front of the camera because the camera picks up all kinds of signals that the unpracticed performer is not aware of, resulting in an impression often contrary to the intended message. An uptight senior executive, no matter how well meaning, delivering a reassuring message to the public over some product liability problem can actually hurt the company’s rehabilitation efforts if that onscreen presenter is deemed untrustworthy or deceptive.
He’ll Always Be Tricky Dick
There are many examples of this sort of marketing faux pas, with Richard Nixon’s 1960 television debate with John Kennedy being one of the most famous. On the radio many people thought Nixon, the veteran campaigner, won the debate, but under the penetrating scrutiny of the television camera, Nixon’s true self came through. It was not just the five o’clock shadow; it was his buried true-self delivering a negative impression to the audience’s subconscious mind. The negative Nixon brand was established forever, one that never fully recovered.
A Brand Should Never Get Old, Ill, or Fat
Even positive reaction to a real personality can turn out to be negative. Take the example of Steve Jobs. His keynote addresses are treated like rock star performances, but when not available to perform for whatever reason, rumors start, and even major corporations like Apple feel the effect.
What you really want to create is a brand character, a spokesperson that can be managed, cultivated, and grown into a long-term brand representative, one who can deliver your marketing message and brand story in consistent, effective, and controlled campaigns.
Every Brand Story Needs A Villain
When we speak of the brand villain we are not necessarily referring to another character although that can certainly be one way of illustrating the issue at hand. As an alternative, situations or scenarios can be used to represent the problem or dilemma.
Psychological issues are most often not so cut-and-dried as to be presented by the black-hat villain and white-hat hero. Engaging heroes are often tainted or damaged in a way the audience can relate to, and effective villains are not so much evil as they are representative of an alternative agenda.
Take for example the recent commercial campaign for ‘Oatmeal Crisps’ that is currently running in the Canadian market. The series of spots features a father who is trying to protect his favorite cereal from being consumed by his teenage son in one commercial, and by his elderly father in another. This extremely clever campaign digs deep into the emotional resentments and psychological issues involved in the family dynamic, but it does it in a humorous, lighthearted manner, where the audience can relate to the situation, and accept the underlying message. Here’s a case of protagonist and antagonist, a more sophisticated approach to the hero-villain relationship.
You Are The Agent of Change
By adopting the Brand Story approach to marketing, you need to accept the notion that your brand is an agent of change. All stories are about change: transformation from one state (dissatisfaction) to another (satisfaction). You construct your brand story based on the idea that your brand will transform the audience somehow.
Take the ‘Multi Grain Cheerios’ commercial featuring a husband and wife discussing the ingredients listed on the cereal box: while the overt message is buy this product because it tastes good, the underlying message is that it helps control your weight thus making you more attractive to your spouse, not a subject that any sensitive spouse would suggest. The cereal is presented as the agent of change: overweight and unattractive, to slim and beautiful, while at the same time removing the stigma of dieting by providing the taste excuse to justify the purchase.
This commercial like the previously mentioned ‘Oatmeal Crisps’ commercial creates a conflict that delivers multiple messages through the familiar husband-wife scenario; one that is familiar to anyone who has ever dared suggest their significant other should lose some weight.
Are You “Law and Order” or “Prison Break”?
Format: Procedural or Serial
The two most commonly used presentation formats are Procedural, think “Law and Order”, or Serial, think “Prison Break”. Procedurals follow a strict formula that continuously replays the basic story arc with the context of each episode emphasizing the consistent attitudes, perspective, and point-of-view of the franchise or brand. On the other hand, Serials move the plot along from episode to episode keeping the audience in suspense as to what is going to happen next and whether the brand hero will win the day.
One of the best Serial advertising campaigns every implemented was the Nescafe Gold Blend coffee campaign that ran from 1987-1992. You can watch the whole campaign from beginning to end on YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=igi9u6X4y-s).
One of my favorite Procedural style campaigns is the recent Kleenex (Let It Out) campaign that was brilliantly executed. It played upon the audience’s emotions, memories, and experiences, while associating those deep-seated feelings with their brand of facial tissue that is normally regarded and sold as a strictly commoditized product.
Doing Something, Isn’t Necessarily Doing It Well
Far from being restrictive, these formats provide familiar structure within which the company can establish and enhance their brand, but failure to grasp the underlying emotional element inherent in your offering will lead to failure. A current Canadian advertiser tried to copy the Kleenex format without understanding what made the Kleenex campaign effective; they copied the physical presentation but without any emotional subtext, relying totally on a cost-to-performance benefit, and the result is a second rate effort rather than an effectively clever slipstreamed homage.
It’s About People, By People, For People
Unlike television advertising that is restricted to only those that can afford it, the Web is available to all. The problem is easy and affordable access to the tools and venues to deliver your brand story does not mean that you are telling it effectively. Marketing communication is not about research, technology, or statistics; it’s about people and the underlying emotional needs your brand satisfies – therein lies the basis upon which you build your brand story.

Inbound links, or links that direct people to your site from other sites, are one of the cornerstones of a strong online brand. Not only do they drive traffic directly, they also influence how much weight your site carries with search engines, helping to bolster your online reputation. Many people take a passive approach to inbound links – if they appear, great, if they don’t, they don’t worry. Others work hard at getting new links, but are only aware of the links they directly solicit.
Build Your Link Reputation
Most people don’t realize that by failing to monitor inbound links, you’re actually missing a great opportunity to reach out to supporters, increase traffic to your site and build your Google CV. The internet is built on a model of reciprocity, and many people regularly check their outbound links to see if the link is reciprocated. If it isn’t, they may cull those links to make more room for people who will link back to them. Knowing when a site links to you allows you to decide whether it is a link you want to pursue keeping, and gives you the chance to take the steps necessary to keep it. Knowing when new links come in also gives you the opportunity to reach out to those people and, if necessary, ask them to improve the link text to best help your search engine relevance.
Collect Data About Your Links
There are two main classes of inbound link monitors: standalone software and web services. Both has their merits and flaws, but as both have costs associated with them, most people choose to opt for free web services. Using a web service gives you portability, and ensure you will never have downtime – rather than having to remember to open a program to check your links, it is done for you every day and you receive an email giving you an overview of new links gained and lost.
Develop a Linking Strategy
You can then use this data to develop a weekly strategy. Look at the new links you’ve gained, and visit the sites they came from. Decide whether you think that site has search engine relevance or traffic relevance for you, and if so how valuable it is. Find the context in which your link appears, and see if you think there is anything that could be improved – maybe it should go to a different page on your site, or have different link text. Then find contact information for the site operator and write them an email thanking them for the link to your site, informing them you have put up a reciprocal link (if you felt it was worth it), and if necessary asking them politely if they would mind updating your link information slightly.
You will also be informed when links to your site have disappeared. In these cases, if the inbound link was from a source you cared about, you’ll want to send an email and ask why they removed the link to your site, and whether there is anything you could do to reconcile the situation. If they decide to leave your link removed, you may wish to remove any outbound links you have to their site, as these one-way links may negatively impact your search engine rankings.
