Choosing a domain name is a very critical part of your website marketing strategy.
By choosing a domain name that targets the specific keywords for your website you’ll flood your website with laser targeted traffic by enhancing click through response.
Pick a domain name that gives your prospects what they most desperately desire. By including the keywords in your domain name that are your customers desires, including them in your marketing messages and your website content you can’t help but flood traffic to your website!
Wondering what your customer’s desires are? If so, you’ll need to determine what your really selling. Let’s look at an example product here: home security alarm system.
Keep in mind few people know, nor do they care what the heck the product looks like or the features of the product such as size, color, weight, speed, or availability. The only thing they have an interest in is the “results” your product will achieve for them. It all boils down to what’s-in-it-for-me?
Why would a prospect purchase a home alarm system? What’s-in-it-for-them? If you think for just a moment you’ll come up with the right answer.
Yes, it’s to protect their jewelry or valuables while they are at work or when the house is empty.
You must stop thinking of yourself or the features of your product to determine what your customer’s deepest desires are. By turning your product or service features into “benefits” or “results” you’ll be able to hit their hot buttons and flood traffic to your website in the process.
The easiest way to turn features into benefits is to list all the features of your product or service on a piece of paper first. (a feature is a characteristic of a thing: size, color, weight, speed, availability) Then one by one turn each feature into a benefit for your customer. What’s-in-it-for-me– save money? youthfulness? friends? security? money? power? luxury? prestige? thinner body? obedient pet?
The traffic driving potential of keyword targeted domain names is awesome, provided that you research your target market and satisfy their “true” needs, desires and benefits. Once you have established this system for marketing, you’ll be able to use your domain name to construct specific ad campaigns targeted to specific markets even if your website offers multiple products and services.
To take it a step further, you could formulate a domain name that works like a headline for a classified ad. When you break a headline down it should have several different parts. It should fan the flames of desire with a hint of information about solving a specific problem, satisfying a need, providing a benefit, or invoking curiosity with a call to action. Your domain name should contain as many of these “headline characteristics” as possible. Try and phrase the keywords into something relatively short, catchy and easy to remember.
Keep in mind “what’s-in-it-for-me?” as to “what your really selling”. The job of your domain name is to act like a headline to drive targeted traffic to your website by “scratching the itch of your customers.” If you’ve found the right words to scratch that itch, then ONLY YOU can put it to use in your domain name. You’ll find that not only will you do better on your search engine rankings you’ll also attract a lot more attention with your pay per click ads or any type of advertising you use.

I’ve done some experiments over the past few months about expiring domains with PR to see if it is worth your while to catch these expired and deleted domains.
My idea why I would like to use expired domains is the notion that old domains are favored than new domains, and to get instant PR.

So I set out to find deleted domains with PR that I can register. One characteristic of domains I was looking for was that the domain still had a PR, and it was still listed in google.
I won’t be mentioning the actual domains here as I need to control the results and prevent people from making backlinks to these domains.
I registered about 4 domains, some have PR2 and PR3. Some have a few pages indexed, some have a few thousand. I also bought a couple of new domains for my new projects.
I found out that google rarely visits these domains so I need to prime it but with some fresh backlinks. After creating some backlinks to these domains, two domains eventually lost their PR. These two domains have only a few pages indexed in google. In one domain, I did a 301 permanent redirect to the new index page. This domain retained its PR. One key difference this domain has compared to the other two is that this domain has thousands of pages indexed in google.
In another domain, I did a 301 and redirect it to a fresh new domain. The result is that the new domain got indexed faster and more pages were indexed compared to another new domain I registered at the same time. However, PR was down to 0.

There is also a case where I did a 301 redirect from an old deleted domain with PR and never got any benefit from it.
In conclusion, there is still conflicting results on whether buying deleted/expired domains. Some works, some don’t. However, what seem to work is that…
a. Old delete domains does contain traffic from existing backlinks. If the old domain has tons of backlinks, it still does generate some traffic.
b. Other search engines such as yahoo and msn do not seem to have an biases against expired/deleted domains.

As many people have found out, you can buy domains with high pagerank (PR) such as PR4 or higher on auctions such as eBay.
Why would anyone pay a significant amount of money for just a domain that doesn’t even come with a business, website or hosting?
Well, the primary reason is so that people can take this high PR domain and use it to host a website primarily for the purpose of linking to websites with lower PR or no PR. Since search engine spiders visit high PR sites more often than low PR sites, the idea is that the spiders will visit the high PR site and then follow the links to lower PR sites.
This strategy may enable the lower PR sites to become indexed faster by the search engines, and with enough links from higher PR sites, the PR of the linked sites could increase.
While this may sound like an excellent idea, there are a few things to watch for in purchasing high PR domains:
1. Unscrupulous sellers have been known to fake PR. Without going into how this can be done, you should use free online tools such as http://www.seologs.com/pr-check/pagerank.html and http://reladvance.com/metrix/find_metrics_results.php to independently verify the PR of the domain you are thinking of buying. Also, you should install the Google toolbar http://www.google.com/tools/toolbar/ on your computer so you can always see the PR of sites you visit.
2. The PR may not last past the next time Google computes PR. Sellers never guarantee the PR will last any length of time, and for good reason. How Google exactly computes PR is mystery and changes frequently. A PR5 domain could be a PR0 domain the next time Google runs their PR algorithms, and oops — there goes your investment.
3. If you do find a legitimate domain with high PR that lasts, a backlink from that domain website to a lower PR website may not be all that effective. Search engines look at “relevancy” of the backlinks, and if the high PR domain is about “cameras,” then it will be able to provide relevant links only to sites about cameras.
4. One backlink from a high PR site is like a drop in the ocean. It takes many backlinks to get and maintain a high PR and consistently high indexing over time. Buying a lot of high PR domains to get a good ranking and indexing could end up being a very expensive proposition.
So look before you leap when considering the purchase of a high PR domain. There are so many other less expensive ways to attain indexing and PR that you may want to consider before laying out money for a domain whose PR may in the end do you little good.
