Since 1998 I’ve spent the first several months of each year looking for the very best search engine optimization (SEO) tips of the previous year’s end. This year I’ve come across the best SEO tips yet.

SEO Tip #1: Make Google Alerts Your Personal Online Spy

Google Alerts is a great way to let the world’s biggest search engine be your personal online spy. This takes search engine optimization insider info to whole new level. Here’s an excerpt straight from Google….

“Google Alerts are email updates of the latest relevant Google results (web, news, etc.) based on your choice of query or topic.

Some handy uses of Google Alerts include:

* monitoring a developing news story
* keeping current on a competitor or industry
* getting the latest on a celebrity or event
* keeping tabs on your favorite sports teams”

As you probably guessed, it’s the second one we care about most, “keeping current on a competitor or industry.”

Here’s how it works… Each time Google finds a reference to the query or topic you request you will be sent an email with the details. This is like having an online spy to make sure competitors are not using your protected keywords (trademarked names, company names, etc.) It’s also an instant identifier to know when your site or product is mentioned in a news story or even when a topic is hot so you can take advantage of the situation. It’s the easiest way in the world to stop competitors’ dirty tricks and identify trends that you can take instant advantage of.

It’s fast, free and works every minute of every day. Let Google Alerts (http://www.google.com/alerts) do your most time consuming legwork while you reap the rewards!

SEO Tip #2: Optimize Your 404 Page and Always Be Found

“Error 404: Page Not Found” is a blessing that most Webmasters curse. Why? Getting a visitor on any page of your site is fantastic! Don’t blow the opportunity. Not only can you make your “404″ page a valuable sales tool, you can use the following search engine optimization techniques to attract customers in droves.

A.) Use your main keyword in your title, add a “pipe” (usually above the Enter key) and then use your secondary keyword. Here’s as example for an SEO site “SEO – Search Engine Optimization Tips”

B.) Add some keyword rich content using one to two keywords for the page. If you have less than 250 words on the page, just use one keyword and use it no more than three times total. Bold the first use and italicize the second or third use. Keep in mind this is an “inactive” page so simply tell the visitor what your site is about and whet their appetite with a good description. Something like this works well… “Thank you for visiting SEO (bold) Group, Inc. We are sorry you landed on a missing page but don’t worry, if you’re looking for the very best search engine optimizations tips (bold), you’re at the right place…” This will go on for a couple paragraphs or as long as you’d like then end it with something to the effect of “Please Click Here (link) to visit our site map or click any link to the left.”

C.) Add your site’s standard navigation system (bar, column, etc.) as mentioned above.

D.) Make the look and feel of the customized 404 page match your main site as closely as possible with a template, matched palette, cascading style sheets, etc.

E.) Create a link to the site map page if available, and make the link easy to find. You want your visitor off the 404 page and into your main content as quickly as possible.

Setting up a custom 404 page link usually takes less than five minutes on most major Web hosting companies like Godaddy.com. But whatever it takes, it’s worth the effort.

SEO Tip #3: Get (Even More) Serious About Linking

I saved the most important for last. If you want to do well on any search engine, especially Google, linking is THE single MOST important thing you can do. It’s that simple.

Here are the five things you MUST do to make your site #1 on Google:

A.) Find the highest page rank sites linking to your site AND your competitors’ sites.

B.) Run monthly link campaigns and snatch up the best of the above identified Web sites.

C.) Run regular checks on what pages are still linking back to your site. Alsomake sure they did not move you from a high page rank page to a lower one (don’t get cheated!)

D.) Eliminate any penalized sites you link to; ASAP!

E.) Check your search engine ranking AND your competitor’s for each of your keywords every week. Do this, at the minimum, for Google, Yahoo, MSN and Alta Vista.

One last thing to know is that Google was originally a college student’s project created for the sole purpose of defining a Web site’s value by the sites that link to it. Twelve years later this is still it’s main job. Linking is EVERYTHING to Google.

Search Marketing Strategy: How (and Why) to Dominate Google News

Search engine marketing efforts usually focus on improving the extent to which a site shows up in Google searches. However, there are distinct methods and advantages to showing up in Google News searches (http://news.google.com).

Show up there, and you’re in the elite company of stories from famous-name news organizations worldwide. Google News aggregates headlines, leads and stories from thousands of legitimate news organizations around the world – and luckily for publicity seekers, it displays news releases (also called press releases or media releases) as well.

One day when I was celebrating my visibility in Google News, someone asked me, “What’s the big deal? What’s so great about getting a news release into Google News?”

Here’s why. First, in Google News you’re more likely to get found by media people looking for what colleagues have recently written about a topic. Ditto for web-savvy, influential bloggers and others researching this week’s take on news and trends.

Second, because of your inclusion in Google News, you appear in news alerts received by experts, reporters, columnists and others who have requested notifications of all news items containing certain words, names or phrases.

And third, from Google News, you usually show up more quickly in regular Google searches, too.

These reasons add up to visibility that tends to bring you more visibility. It’s a terrific and cost-effective way to get your business, product, event or cause in front of people who not only might visit your site and become customers but also spread the word about what you’re up to, to their sphere of influence.

Two methods get you into Google News: 1)Getting quoted in a news story and 2)Issuing a news release – which may of course lead to getting quoted in a news story. In case you aren’t familiar with news releases, they are 300-400 word documents in a very particular format and style that you can learn by Googling “sample press release” and following the models you find.

Key to a proper news release is a journalistic tone – relatively objective and factual, rather than sales-y. Your news release has to come across as if a reporter, not an advertising expert, wrote it. In the headline and body of the release, strategically include the words and phrases by which you want to be found.

After writing the news release, use a distribution service to get it into Google News. These services include established, expensive ones like PRNewswire and Businesswire as well as more affordable newcomers like PRWeb and Emailwire. A few free news release sites, such as pr-usa.net and shepress.com, also get their contents into Google News.

Posting the release on your own site is also a good idea, but it’s not what gets your material into Google News.

From what I’ve observed, Google News keeps stories and releases live for 2-4 weeks. To get found in Google News, twice a month would therefore be the minimum frequency for distributing news releases. Do it more often if you have a variety of keywords by which you’d like to be found.

With this in mind we called in the data analysts, the mathematicians and the “social media number crunchers”, we gave them a holy grail, “Is there a constant that exists in social media, amongst all the variables is there something that always remains the same?”

Using the combination of a 2400 year old mathematical concepts and the astronomical amount of statistical data generated by the billion users of Social media networks, we set to work, analyzing the data, looking for repetition of events, looking for patterns. After a while, after many wild goose chases, we found that in fact a constant did exist, we called it the “chatter constant” Tc . On it’s own the “Tc”, made no sense, it had to be placed in relation to the variables. So the Tc was the first component of an equation, and time after time, however we did the math this number remained the same. The other components were; the number of contacts, connections, friends or followers and the user interface i.e. (the screen itself).

The equation took shape over several weeks and we called it “The Golden Tweet Ratio” (G) A period of extensive beta testing in the later half of 2009 led to the redesign and fine tuning of “The Golden Tweet Ratio”, to accommodate for a wide variety of variables, across all existing and potential social media platforms. At this point we chose to concentrate on one social media portal, to test the equation, we decided to use Twitter. Let me say though that even though the equation was tested on the Twitter model, it’s not exclusively a twitter app, it can be applied across the board to any social media and networking niche, with any site, that utilises the micro-blogging or journal style layout.

What we found was that “The Golden Tweet Ratio” has the ability to calculate the exact number of posts required per hour, to allow internet marketers to carve an almost permanent niche in the screen real estate of their digital associates, friends followers etc. In effect it was an insight to what we call “perfect leverage”. “Perfect leverage” is a unique and rare phenomenon, the shrewd online marketer must strike a delicate balance between the clients or customers desires and needs and the exposure of their product or service, too much pushes the customers away. Too little and they will be poached by another competitor.

The Golden Tweet Ratio and it’s principles can be applied to any social media network, and it will work. Using it to achieve perfect leverage is a matter of delivering, relevant, up to date and interesting information to the end user. Social media users want a mix of news, entertainment, useful products that relate to their own interests and passions. The first thing you must know about social media is that IT IS NOT A VENUE TO PITCH YOUR BUSINESS! If you can understand and apply this without worrying about your whole business going down the crapper, you will be dominate social media.

Why do you say I can’t pitch my business, Travis? Because, when you’re at a party, do you like a stranger coming up to you and selling you products or business ideas? Probably not.

In the same manner, people in social media don’t want your business opportunity … UNTIL you build a relationship with them. When they know and understand that you actually care about them and want to help them succeed, then they will start buying into your product or opportunity (and this will absolutely happen).

Let me give you an example. There are three kind of people in the world, those who like to talk about others, those who talk about themselves and those who let others talk. Who do you generally feel more attracted to in conversation?

If you’re like me, you said the guy or girl who actually listens to you talk rather than babbles your head off. This is the person who will dominate the social media revolution of 2009.

Just think about it for a moment. When someone follows you on Twitter, or friends you on Facebook, would you rather be directed to a blog of theirs that has great resources and advice coming from a guy or girl who actually seems interested in YOU, or, to a capture page that has the next get rich quick scheme attached to it? I choose the former.

If people trust you and follow you because you genuinely care and actually work hard to build a relationship with them, they will begin to wonder just what it is this guy does that makes him so appealing to spend time with. They will also want to know exactly what it is that you do …

If you offer resources, advice, training and even sometimes just an ear, people will begin to ask you questions, it’s just the general law of attraction. People are attracted to leaders, not peddlers.

As a foundation, and in conclusion, to dominate the social media revolution of 2009 you must not, indeed absolutely cannot, pitch your business for internet marketing success! Build relationships with people and they will flock to you … and, you may even like it!

Google: 72.3% of searchers prefer clicking on the natural listings that SEO helps you get. Only 27.7% prefer using the paid links you might use as part of your SEM plan.

MSN: Only 28.8% of searchers go for the natural listings while 71.2% rely on paid links. This is almost the exact opposite of how Google users work.

That is amazing information to have! You know right away that your time and effort is better spent on SEO for Google while putting your pay per click dollars into MSN is probably your best bet.

C.) Now for the biggie; return on investment (ROI.) Once again our friends at Neutralize have some great information. The following numbers show the approximate ROI that Website owners got using SEO and SEM (specifically pay per click.) for lead generation and actual sales…

Lead Generation: * 79% SEO * 75% Paid Search (SEM)

Actual Sales: * 78% SEO * 63% Paid Search (SEM)

These are huge returns on investment. In comparison, banners only account for about one third as many leads and sales.
