Don’t Make the Same Mistake Most Other Internet Marketers Do!

I guess because you’re reading this article you’re interested in making money online with Internet Marketing.

Could it also be that you’ve already invested a lot of time and effort into online marketing without much success.

Am I right? I bet I am!

Internet marketing can be so frustrating. You find other marketers eaning huge amounts of cash month after month, and yet you find it hard to make more than a few measly dollars from all or the time you put in.

This leads us on to the next question.

What are you doing wrong?

Well the clue is in the second sentence in this article! Can you figure it out before we move on?

No? Well let me explain.

You’re not making a lot of money in return for the effort you’re investing, that’s the problem. The mistake you’re making is that you’re investing too much of the wrong commodity and too little of the right commodity!

To make it big, and I mean massive, you’ve got to start investing more cash and less of your own time on the routine tasks. Think about this statement for a while.

If you were starting an offline business, you wouldn’t expect to make a million dollars without putting in a significant capital investment to buy assets and market your products. You wouldn’t expect to make a million dollars in a real world business without employing other people to help you achieve it.

Do you see where I’m coming from?

I’ll be honest, it’s only recently that the penny has dropped with me too. I’m as guilty as the next man, here’s an example of what I mean:

On many occasions I’ve sat for an hour or two writing an article, then spent another 20 minutes submitting it to two or three article directories. Typically the articles never received more than a handful of page views and very few click throughs!

Two hours well spent? I don’t think so! So what should I have done?

Well it’s not rocket science really. I should have spent my valuable time as follows:

- researching which existing articles in the niche written by other authors to see which achieved great page views

- used the research to write a list of 20 article titles based around the high traffic titles

- outsourced the writing of 20 articles based on those titles

- uploaded them to hundreds of directories and ezines using paid distribution services

In scenario two, my 2 hours of time gets me thousands of inbound links from high traffic generating articles, links that will bring me hundreds of visitors month after month for quite a long time. Those hundreds of targeted visitors should make me hundreds or thousands of dollars, all for an outlay of say 0! And this is just one example of many.

It sounds obvious doesn’t it? But how many of us shy away from spending 0 because it sounds a lot for a task we can do ourselves for free? The problem is by doing everything yourself you’re not making a lot of money, you’re sub consciously conditioning yourself to accept poor results, and as a result you won’t spend the 0 because in reality you don’t believe you’ll see a huge return. The real reality is that you will, but you need to force yourself to change your mindset and become less risk adverse.

Millionaires take risks and leverage the efforts of others. If you want to be rich, you need to do the same!

Let’s go back to the offline business scenario. I’ve had a number of offline businesses. In each case I’ve invested thousands of dollars initially. I’ve also produced business plans and strategies up front that include financial budgets and forecasts. Have I done the same for my online marketing business? Have you?

Whether you’re looking to make a lot of money from an online or offline business, the same principles apply. The more cash you invest the higher the rewards you see will be. The more you leverage the time and skills of others, the more money you’ll make.

Let me put this seed in your mind.

Just suppose you stopped what you’re doing with online marketing right now and started again with the following budget. ,000 to spend immediately on software tools to automate your routine tasks, and a further 0 per month to spend on outsourced activities such as content creation, copywriting and link generation. At the end of your first year, you will have invested ,000. What will it have bought you?

With the best services, you’ll soon have tons of pages, tons of links and tons of traffic!

As well as the traffic, when you have a large list, you’ll find it a lot easier to recruit JV partners, which will also boost your sales and traffic!

So take my advice and learn from my mistakes. Find some cash to invest, set yourself a plan and get yourself a millionaire mindset!

Don’t Make These Web Hosting Mistakes

Many people, especially newcomers, when they register their domain names, are convinced to sign up for a hosting account with the company that registered their domain name. That could be godaddy.com, yahoo.com or any number of other domain name registering companies. That’s really unfortunate, because the hosting services those people usually get don’t generally meet the needs of an online entreprenuer. Those hosting accounts just lack the functionality you really need to promote your business.

Here’s what happens – the domain name registering companies will make you an offer of a low level hosting plan. Since the customers that are registering the domain names are usually beginners, they aren’t aware of all the hosting choices that are readily available elsewhere. They think that just because the company they’re dealing with can register domain names, they must have the best hosting too.

To make a large story short, people that buy into the hosting that’s offered when they register their domains are usually disappointed once they get started with their new online business. Although they got what seemed like a low price, they’ll find out later, when they compare it to other offers, that it really wasn’t such a good deal.

But that’s only part of the problem. As they become more and more involved in running their new online business, they discover that there may be some special software that they want to run on their website. Perhaps it’s a shopping cart or maybe a content management system. When they look at the requirements of the software and compare those requirements to their hosting account, they’ll see that their hosting account won’t support the new software. You see, most marketing related software will use PHP or mySQL databases. If your web hosting account doesn’t support PHP and mySQL, you’re just out of luck.

Of course, these customers can go back to their hosting provider, who will explain to them that the features required for support of the new software are available to them, but they’ll have to ‘upgrade’ their hosting account. And the upgrade isn’t free, by the way. Their original hosting may have cost only .95 a month, but the new, upgraded hosting will cost them or a month. Now, all of the sudden, that great hosting deal doesn’t seem so great anymore.

Don’t waste your time and money with ‘bargain’ web hosting that won’t do the job.

Another mistake is trying to run your business with free hosting. First of all, if you’re looking for free web hosting because you’re not willing to spend a small amount of money for your own web hosting account, you might as well just give up right now. If you want to do everything for free, you’re not looking for a real business, you’re looking for a hobby.

Usually, when you go with free hosting, your website URL will end up being something like “freehosting.megacities.com/18987/~parkavenue/1793″ If your only interest is in having a place on the web to display your family photos, maybe the free hosting is right for you. But if you’re trying to run a business, the free hosting can be a big handicap. For one thing, the URL doesn’t look very professional.

And the free hosting companies tend to display their own advertising banners on the pages of your website. How does that look to your potential customers? Just imagine that if you’re trying to operate a family oriented business and when prospects visit your website, banners advertising “Adult Chat Rooms” are on your pages.

Types of web hosting – Primarily, there are 2 different types of web hosting. One is Microsoft Windows based and the other is Linux/Unix based. My personal recommendation is to stay away from the Windows based hosting. I’ve had friends that went with Windows hosting, and then later found out that much of the software they wanted to run wasn’t compatible with the Windows server. Most all web based software that is used for marketing purposes is designed to run on Linux servers, so I wouldn’t recommend anything other than Linux based hosting.

As we’ve established the need for Linux based hosting and that you shouldn’t get hosting from the same place you registered your domain, the question is – Where do you get hosting?

I’m going to let you in on a small secret – all those banner ads and email messages you probably see pitching hosting deals – IGNORE THEM. The absolute best hosting I’ve seen is available at dirt cheap prices on Ebay. Yes, Ebay, the online auction.

Just go to www.ebay.com and search for “web hosting reseller” By getting a reseller’s hosting account, you’ll get all the hosting you’ll ever need. Here’s how it works – A reseller’s hosting account gives you the ability to sell hosting accounts to other people. One of the benefits of a reseller account is that you can usually host an unlimited number of domains.

Right now you may be thinking this isn’t for you because you’re not interested in selling hosting to other people. You just want hosting for your own business. That’s OK, you don’t need to sell hosting with the reseller’s account. You can just use it for yourself. You can use it to host the new domain that you recently registered and then, later on, if you register more domain names, you can host those also – without paying any more money for hosting.

I bought a hosting reseller’s account on Ebay about 3 years ago. It’s full featured, reliable, and the service and support is great. I pay 9 a year and I currently have about 95 domains hosted. Do the math – that works out to a little over a dollar per year for hosting that has everything I need. I think that’s a pretty good deal.

If you don’t want to get a reseller’s account, you can get by even cheaper. I have another hosting account I bought at Ebay that only hosts a single domain, but it only costs 75 cents a month. This 75 cent account supports PHP, mySQL, has unlimited space and bandwidth, unlimited email accounts and just about everything else you could think of.

I strongly recommend that you check out the hosting offers on Ebay before you make any other commitments. Here are the features you want to make sure your hosting has -

1) Linux based web server

2) CPANEL admin control. This is the web based admin where you can check traffic stats, setup mySQL databases, setup email accounts and a whole lot more

3) Fantastico – This is an installation aid that’s really handy to have. It allows you to automatically install several high powered software applications with just a single mouse click. Want a WordPress blog? Click and you have it, ready to roll. Want an online forum – same deal, click and it’s there. Catalog and shopping cart – You guessed it, click and you’ll have it.

It goes without saying that you should check the the seller’s feedback on Ebay before you make any commitment. See what other customers have to say about the service. You want to make sure you’re dealing with someone that’s reputable.

4. You don’t offer a free directory. Create a directory of web sites on a particular topic that is related to your target audience. People will visit because they will find what they’re looking for, all in one place.

5. You don’t offer a free e-zine. Most people love to get free information that they’re interested in emailed to them on a regular basis. This saves them time and money.

6. You don’t offer a free community. People like to have a place were they can have discussions with others on a particular subject. You could add a chat room or message board to your web site.

7. You don’t offer a free affiliate program. One of people’s basic needs to survive is money. When you offer them a free opportunity to make money they’ll line up to visit your web site.

When setting out to establish a business in the 21st century, most entrepreneurs are factoring in a website idea. In fact many new businesses base much of their new ideas on an innovative way to sell through websites. Others want to innovate on their existing website to cater to the changing expectations of their market; more customers want to use ecommerce, use price comparison sites, watch video demonstrations of your products or services etc. Website innovation is important and they can differentiate you from the competition, but the biggest differentiation is whether your customers are able to find you or not!

Is Your Website Designed and Developed for Marketing Success?

Your website could be the most sophisticated (and expensive) bit of web technology on the web, but how effective will it be if no one has the faintest idea you exist. eMarketing, short for electronic marketing similar to ecommerce, needs to be taken seriously if your website masterpiece is to get the clientele it deserves. When shopping for a website developer, you’ll find that many firms either don’t offer SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) or Internet marketing services, while others may offer it but it is offered as an afterthought or tell you the website is built to be “search engine friendly”. Having a website that is search engine friendly is a good start, but it does not make a marketing strategy. Having a web marketing professional involved from start to finish with a marketing plan that is executed at strategic stages of the entire process means that your website has the best chances of getting customers as soon as possible. Considering eMarketing after the website is built simply extends the time it will take for your website to get traffic and therefore sales.

Marketing is especially important for new businesses, and that goes triple for online businesses. The formula for success may vary in detail, but the fundamentals generally remain the same. SEO is usually the best long term strategy for ongoing targeted traffic, while other forms of marketing build your brand visibility and loyalty.

Understanding Your Target Audience

In order to have an effective website, as with operating any business, you need to understand your potential customers and their expectations.

• Your website marketer or SEO consultant should also understand who your potential customers are so that the most appropriate search terms are targeted that will attract the right audience.

• The design of your website will depend to an extent on demographics. If your customers are primarily female between 16 and 45, for example, you would want a design that appeals to that demographic.

• The website needs to build a customer experience that is not confusing, confounding or counter intuitive. A distinct call-to-action should grab the visitor’s attention so that they have no misunderstanding of what or where they need to click in order to step through the sales or lead generation process.

• The website needs to build trust in the purchasing process and in your products or services at every opportunity.

Content Is King, Queen, Duke and Court Jester…

For SEO, the quality of your content cannot be stressed enough. Most SEO experts will tell you that content is king when it comes to getting good positions in Google search results. I would say that content is king, queen… all the way to court jester! Strategic use of search terms within your text and headings will have a big impact on the success of your website. It’s not just a matter of repeating keywords everywhere though, for best results you need a professional copywriter that can communicate your product and service offers effectively. It’s not just the essentially robotic Google web spider that you need to impress, you need to build a case for your visitors to buy as well. Google ranks you according to how useful and informative your website is as well. Google wants its search engine to produce the best customer experience possible for their users. Keep this in mind when considering what text to display on your website will keep you in good stead with Google.

Launching Your Website

Once your website is built and tested, it’s now time to launch your website. If your website has been built to be search engine friendly, your developer has included a sitemap on your website that is compatible with the major search engines: Google, Yahoo and Bing. Once your website is ready, the sitemap needs to be submitted to these search engines directly using their special webmaster tools. This is the fastest way to get your website indexed. Avoid manually submitting your website to the search engines from the public front end, as this will be delayed and might actually hurt your chances at good rankings. Submitting via the front door is a mistake that too many developers make.

The next step is to write a good press release and have it submitted to a number of press release submission sites. The PR should talk about how your website is unique and how it fulfils a need in your market that has up this point found lacking. If your website has a particularly unique or innovative offering your PR may be picked up by media outlets. In any case, these PR sites will provide a good start to your link building campaign by providing some initial backlinks.

While your SEO campaign gains momentum (and this depends heavily on how competitive your search terms are), you can get instant traffic from the moment you launch your website by running an Adwords campaign. By setting up an Adwords campaign, you can be appearing on the first page of Google from day one. This involves displaying paid ads on Google where you “pay per click”. This form of advertising is very effective because you only pay when you get traffic to your website and your ads are only displayed when someone types in the keywords that relate to your business. Anyone can open an Adwords account with Google and start advertising their website, but it is highly recommended that you let a professional manage it for you as they can write more effective ads and make your advertising dollars go further through effective campaign management.

Building Links for SEO

Next to content in importance to SEO is link popularity. Building links is essential for gaining positions in Google now more than ever before because competition is increasing for your search terms. The fastest way to build links is to pay the website/directory owner in question to place a link on one of their web pages with specific link text using your best keywords. The more links appear on other pages with your keywords in the text the higher Google will rank your website.

The next best way to build links is with free one‐way links, which has no cost payable to the various website owners, but it is expensive as far as time goes. Reciprocal links, or building links by exchanging links between websites is another good way to get links because the waiting time for links to go live is generally shorter and both websites benefit. The possible downside to this is that your website would need a links page displaying links to third party websites and directories.

Build Marketing into Your Budget

Many who are taking business across the electronic frontier get the website built assuming that when it is launched, it will magically produce traffic of its own volition with very little outlay beyond the website development itself. Once it’s built, that’s it. Wrong. While online marketing can prove to cost far less overall than the kind of budget needed to be half as effective using print and other “old world” media, one needs to be realistic about what it will take to get the results you want. Setting realistic goals through careful analysis produced by your online marketing firm is a good place to start. Discussing how much traffic you would realistically receive if your website achieved specific positions in Google for your list of search terms is a sensible approach so that you can factor for growth. It is also ideal for your Internet marketer to track and measure your successful conversions on an ongoing basis so that you can continually improve your visitor to sales/leads conversion rate to continually improve your bottom line.

Don’t be fooled by impressive charts if you are buying Internet Advertising

Don’t always believe the stats web publishers quote when trying to persuade you to advertise on their sites – not all web publishers are honest!

Firstly let me point out categorically that I NEVER employ this (or any other underhand) methods. The stats quoted here come from a project we have under development and this was done purely to illustrate this article.

Within 48 hours I took a site from 16 pages to over 9,000 page views – which make for a very nice looking chart to present to a potential client.

If I was trying to sell you advertising, it would look pretty impressive wouldn’t it? Really, it’s not. It’s a very simple deception technique used by some unscrupulous web site owners.

How did I do it?

Simple – I bought the hits from a website – for .99. There are a many sites where you can do this, and on some you can even set a daily rate, which if you are using this to be deceptive which you can control to show an upward trend.

The thing to note – is that hits from this type of source are worthless. I wouldn’t show the potential client of course – I’d just have a nice looking bar chart with spectacular numbers – in this particular instance the vast majority came from China, so even if they were real hits, rather than automated or users tricked onto the site by some means – they would not be able to read your content anyway!

There’s four reason people might use this…

1. They are stupid, and believe they are buying genuine, worthwhile, human visitors

2. To improve their rank on the Alexa website (or similar sites) that measure sites by traffic rather than more thorough means

3. An SEO company can use tools like this to deceive less knowledgeable clients and impress them with improved performance

4. Most commonly, a small web site owner hoping to sell ad space can create charts like the one I have described to deceive prospects. Picture a site with 200 visitors a day (or even less), if the owner was to ‘buy’ 1000 hits a day they have a chart which has 1200 hits a day (and they only need to do this for a week or a month occasionally to get a nice print out for their sales folder. Simple, but very effective to a potential client with little or no understanding of the Internet.

So – next time someone comes knocking on your door selling advertising – don’t take their impressive statistics at face value.

Here’s a couple of things that you should be aware of…

1. The term hits means files loaded which includes images and other files – each page can contain many items. For instance a hundred hits a day could simply be a couple of pages viewed with lots of images on!

2. Unique visitors, is exactly what it says – as is page loads. The ratio of visitors to page loads is crucial – lets say a site gets 1000 visitors a day and 1000 page loads, it means that anyone who his getting to the site is jumping off right away, they are not reading the content. If its 1000 visitors to 10,000 page loads – obviously users are finding the content useful as they are reading 10 pages each.

3. Ask where the hits come from geographically, and ask for evidence – does it reflect your target audience?

4. Ask where the inbound links in come from – they should be from quality sites – not “I’ll click yours if you click mine” type sites like Twitter!

It’s a simple thing. Statistics, charts and spurious numbers look great – but they can be formed and twisted to say whatever the person sat in front of you wants to say if they are less than scrupulous!

Ask questions! Even better, have a look at who’s advertising already and talk to them!

And the big question is – have you ever heard of the site before someone walked through your door or that email arrived in your inbox? Chances are if you haven’t, neither have your potential customers.

First let me explain article marketing for those that do not know what it is. Lets say your website is about widgets. You write an article on interesting ways people can use widgets.

In the footer of your article there is an author bio section. In the author bio section you place links to your website about widgets.

You submit that article to as many article directories as possible. You can use a serviceISnare. who for two dollars per article will submit your article to hundreds of article directories.

 Once you submit to all of those directories, remember the link in the author bio section, each of those directories is now a one-way inbound link.

Now none of those links is related to widgets, so they are not relative links, but they do still count for link popularity, just not as much as relative links do.

But the second reason that article directories exist is to provide free content to website owners. These website owners can take your article and use it as content for their website as long as they leave the links in the author bio section active and intact.

Article Marketing Doesn’t Work. That is exactly what some old-time experienced SEO people are still saying. Yet, one of the clients I wrote articles for went from a link popularity of 1 to a link popularity of 457 in 8 days.

I received an email today from a client I wrote an article for on “Free Credit Repair” 3 days ago. He did a search in Google today for “Free Credit Repair” and the article was in the top 100. Tough category, but it was written 3 days ago and appears in Google for his search term with links to his website.

 I can continue to provide dozens of examples where article marketing works and works fast. Once those articles are picked up by other websites besides the article directories, the real benefit comes.

Those websites that pick up and use the widget articles as content for their websites would not use the article if it were not related to their own topic, which means related to widgets in this case. That means relative one-way inbound links for your website.

If you have no use for quick link popularity and relative one-way inbound links to your website, then article marketing is not for you.

It’s a fact. The search engines don’t really care about most websites. If the search engines could talk (perish the thought) they’d tell you that for most keywords, only the first page or two of results are really worthwhile. The relevancy drops off very quickly, and the remaining several million websites stored in their indexes are irrelevant, and invisible. If this sounds like the problem your website is facing, read on.

In order to rank well, you have to do certain basic things. You can’t expect to get to the top of the pile without any effort. To get your website near the top, you’re going to have to break a sweat. The ten rules that follow aren’t the only rules in the SEO game. But they are good ones. Use them all, diligently, and your site will start moving up the charts within a couple of months.

1. Stay organized. Develop good planning habits and record-keeping and stick to them.

2. Start with a good website. If you site is boring, uninformative, and unoriginal, why would the major search engines want to send visitors there? They wouldn’t. So build great content.

3. Directory submissions are nothing to get hung up on. Just do it and move on. Directories are a small piece of the puzzle, not a whole campaign. You can find suggestions for good directories at www.directorylist.org, www.isedb.com, and www.searchengineguide.com.

8. If organized link hunts are good, disorganized link hunting is just as good. Huh? Disorganized link hunting occurs when you track the competition to see who is linking to them. Then you go after the same links. That’s why it’s disorganized – you are just hunting around wherever your nose leads you. For in-depth tracking, consider the tracking service from www.googlealert.com. They are not a part of Google, but they track Google, and they are Google-approved.

9. Study your web statistics. For successful SEO, you must track who is coming to your site, how they are finding you, and how they navigate your site. Good stats packages can be found at www.google.com/analytics, as well as www.websidestory.com, and www.webtrends.com, to name a few.

10. Stay on top of the news, and be alert for random opportunity. This is often overlooked. When things happen in your industry – a new product, a show, a controversy – be ready to write about it. If you don’t, someone else will, and they will get all the links. If news breaks, talk about it in forums, on your website, and in your blog.

Sound like a lot of hard work? It is! The rewards go to those who put in the effort, not to those who want to “get rich quick” with a few tricks. Use all these 10 rules, and your website will become one of the few sites that the search engines really care about.
