What is Relationship Marketing?
Relationship Marketing as it says on the tin is all about relationships and the effective use of tactics and various methods to develop long term relationships with customers with the intention to turn them into loyal customers.
With the ongoing amount of competition, organizations must demonstrate and offer extremely good customer service which gives great value and excellent targeted messages and communications.
However first you have to attract customers before being able to convert them into paying customers, therefore methods and tactics are used to do exactly this. Some organisations offer a whole array of offers, new product promotions and competitive prices. As soon as these leads are captured they then have to be retained, its common for organisations to use methods such as loyalty cards, courtesy calls and many other relationship building tactics.
How does Relationship Marketing work online and how can i get started?
Customer Relationship Management tells us that we must have a healthy intelligent database with good data that we can use to use to our advantage to convert leads and retain consumers e.g knowing Mr smith likes to play golf at the weekend and enjoy indulging in a bottle of 1957 red wine of a Saturday evening would be extremely powerful information to some organisations.

There are many ways you can do this but the strongest and most successful way is to offer something for free, now … it doesn’t have to be something outrageous like a free product or something expensive, it doesn’t even have to be anything tangible, it could just be an E-Book or E-Guide which you know will add great value to your visitors, for example i recently listened to a great podcast from someone who set up a website on “How To Cure Acne”, this person simply implemented a lead capture system and to entice visitors into leaving their contact details the webmaster offered a “7 Day Plan to Cure Acne” which was a 7 day plan which provided down to earth advice, tips, product reviews and other useful resources to its readers which was delivered over a 7 day period each day, and the best of it was it was all automated.
However the relationship building didn’t end there, the visitors wouldn’t simply receive 7 days of material and then not a whistle for months, the idea here is to grow the leads and build up a rapore and strong relationship

Opt-in e-mail advertising, or permission marketing, is a method of advertising via e-mail whereby the recipient of the advertisement has consented to receive it. This method is one of several developed by marketers to eliminate the disadvantages of e-mail marketing.
Opt-in free email marketing may evolve into a technology that uses a handshake protocol between the sender and receiver. This system is intended to eventually result in a high degree of satisfaction between consumers and marketers. If opt-in e-mail advertising is used, the material that is e-mailed to consumers will be “anticipated”. It is assumed that the consumer wants to receive it, which makes it unlike unsolicited advertisements sent to the consumer. Ideally, opt-in e-mail advertisements will be more personal and relevant to the consumer than untargeted advertisements.
A common example of permission marketing is a newsletter sent to an advertising firm’s customers. Such newsletters inform customers of upcoming events or promotions, or new products. In this type of advertising, a company that wants to send a newsletter to their customers may ask them at the point of purchase if they would like to receive the newsletter.
With a foundation of opted-in contact information stored in their database, marketers can send out promotional materials automatically — known as Drip Marketing. They can also segment their promotions to specific market segments.

• Don’t use all caps.
• Don’t use HTML messages that are primarily graphics.
• Don’t try to trick filters by replacing letters with asterisks or breaking words up with punctuation marks. Filters are getting smarter, and you could end up on a black list.
• Don’t use sloppy HTML.
• Don’t use large or small fonts. Stick with H1, H2, or H3 heading tags.
If you choose to use a hosted service, there are a number of things you should ask before joining:
• What precautions do they take to prevent spammers from enrolling? A good host company will have measures in place, such as confirmed opt-in, to make sure that they’re not allowing spammers to join.

Do they offer conversion tracking? Similar to an ad tracking program, many hosted servers now let you see how many of your e-mail recipients clicked through to your site, how many click-throughs resulted in sales, and how much money you made from your campaign.
• What kind of customer service do they provide? You can often tell the answer to that question simply by how long it takes them to respond to your inquiries. Ask if they offer full phone support and if they charge extra for the service.

If you have the products or services that you want to sell on the Internet, you’ll want to create a web site where you’ll advertise what you are offering and you’ll also want to spread a word about your products or services to the world. You can easily and quickly do it via email. Email marketing is certainly one of the most powerful strategies in internet marketing. It’s quick, cost effective – you do not have to pay a set price for every email that is sent out – and allows contact people in all parts of the world. So, you can get more purchasers and respectively more revenue for less investment of time and money.
How does one accomplish bulk email marketing campaign?
You can use online bulk emailing services, or you can pay a marketing firm to do your bulk email promotions, or you can use direct email marketing software to distribute your email campaigns sitting at your computer.
Using software can be the most cost-effective method if you have the time to manage your prospects list and accomplish your email campaigns with a constant frequency.
There is wide choice of direct email marketing software packages available on the Internet market. Some are even freeware programs that don’t require any investment. Although they don’t generally have the value-added features that come with software packages that you purchase; however, if you aren’t running a large email marketing campaign, they may suit your needs for accomplishing specific tasks just fine.
What is Drip Email Marketing?
The concept behind drip email marketing consists in sending periodic emails to prospects and clients hoping to bring them to your website and make them purchase products or services. It is an effective method to generate new purchasers from your prospects and keeping relationship with your existing clients.
Drip Email Marketing tactic results from the idea that nobody purchases online products or services instantly. A visitor can come to your web site a few times before he becomes a purchaser. Keeping this in mind, how are you going to stimulate your prospects’ interest to your site and keep them informed about your products and services? This is where a drip email marketing campaign is quite to the point.
Imagine that a prospect has just visited your site and left you the email address. It’s important to note that you should add a sign-in form to your web site to collect the prospects’ email addresses. It’s rather useful if your sign-in form asks the subscriber to provide some about additional and not only the email address. I’m not talking about private information. I’m talking about the subscriber’s area of interest, hobbies, specific needs, or at least the emails he prefers to receive, text or HTML. All this information will help you segment your prospects and send more relevant email messages to each group.
So, based on the subscribers’ preferences, you set up a drip email marketing campaign catered to their specific needs. Each message you send them give more information about their inquiries slightly hinting them at you and your products or services. It is an importunate way to stamp your name in their mind. Remember, you don’t sell anything yet. You just give an advice and information about their particular needs and wishes.
For your existing clients, a drip email marketing campaign is similar. You only need to tailor the emails so they are oriented to the client after purchase. Your email drips must contain relevant information that can help the customer with the products or services he purchased. The customer must be sure that you are always there to assist him. When your client believes that you are a faithful and reliable partner, he is ready to purchase again from you.
It may probably sound like you will need more than one tool to accomplish your drip email marketing campaign. But you can find many programs on the Internet that can handle your growing lists of prospective and present clients. Our email management software must be flexible enough to treat each client or prospect according to the routine of your drip email campaign.
The most important thing to remember about drip email marketing is that you must not send meaningless emails. Each message must have an informative content, a real reason to contact your prospects and clients, not just a note saying “Hi!” or “How are you?”.
If your drip marketing email cannot keep the client’s interest, it will be deleted immediately next time when they read the sender’s email address. We all are busy people and won’t spend our time for dull messages. If you are trying to build the relationship based on trust and faith, you cannot tolerate that they never open your emails. You can start directly from the subject line. The subject itself must grab people’s attention and make them want to read your message. This is the essential concept behind a drip email marketing campaign – to develop a trust and faithful relationship with your customer by sending valuable information. When the rapport of informative and useful emails is established, your clients and prospects will be looking forward for every email from you and they will even recommend your company and your products to others. Isn’t it exactly what you want for you business? I’m sure it is.

Should You Do a Blog or E-mail Marketing?

Trying to choose between doing a blog or email marketing? Marketing Mentor, Ilise Benun, explains the pros and cons of both
Both blogs and e-letters (a.k.a. e-zines or e-mail newsletters) are ideal marketing tools for small-business owners. They give you two inexpensive ways to communicate with your customers, give them useful advice, and reveal your latest products and services.
But though they have the same purpose, they are very different.
First, let’s define our terms.
A blog is a website that you can create yourself using Web-based software. Blogs tend to have a personal flavor and speak in the distinct voice of the blogger. A typical blog combines text, images, and links to other blogs, Web pages, and other media related to its topic. Unlike a traditional, static website, the content or information posted on a blog is up-to-the-minute, frequently updated (although it doesn’t have to be), and displayed in reverse chronological order, the most recent posting first. Also, readers can contribute their comments, turning the blog into an online conversation.
The most effective email marketing is done with an electronic newsletter that you send out regularly via e-mail to a list of people who have given you permission to do so. The content of an email newsletter is more evergreen. It can be anything from news about you and your business to tips that demonstrate your expertise. When you use an e-mail marketing service or software, it’s also very easy to design and send.
The main difference between the two is this: You “push” an email newsletter to your list so you control the contact, while a blog is a “pull.” Readers have to go there on their own, so you have a lot less (or no) control over the contact. The quality of the readers is different too. Email newsletter readers went out of their way to sign up, so you can consider them “A leads” for your marketing messages. They’ve essentially raised their hands and asked you to keep in touch. Blog readers, on the other hand, are information hounds, so they may not be as responsive.
Let’s compare.
A blog is easier to set up – but not by much. It literally takes 10 minutes to create, and you don’t need any technical expertise. However, you have less freedom with the layout due to the limitations of most blog publishing software (especially the most popular and free ones, like blogger.com and typepad.com). With an e-letter, on the other hand, it takes a bit more time to create the prototype and template, whether in text or html. But once that’s done, you just type the text for each issue into that template and send it out.
It takes more time to write an email newsletter. Most small-business owners take time to write and edit their e-letters, as they should. Because you’re pushing your email newsletter to people, asking them to read what you’ve written, it has to be well-thought-out, concise, and to the point. On the other hand, since a blog tends to be made up of snippets of ideas posted frequently (sometimes several times a day), bloggers don’t labor over their text.
Plus, a blog is less formal, because it’s like a conversation. That means “you can speak in your everyday voice, which is (hopefully) friendly and approachable.” So says Colleen Wainwright, a.k.a. The Communicatrix, a graphic designer who blogs. “On a blog, the expectations are much lower for both grammar and formality. Also, you can combine personal and professional elements in your blog; how much of each depends on what you’re comfortable with and what your prospective clientele will be comfortable reading. You can write about anything (and many people do), but if you’re using it to promote your business, it will be most effective if you focus and use the blog to establish your credibility within that narrow niche.”
My email newsletter, Quick Tips from Marketing Mentor, goes out weekly, and between the writing, editing, and layout, I spend approximately one hour on each issue. My blogging takes a half-hour on a Sunday morning. That’s when I draft and schedule my three posts for the week. Each one is usually no longer than a paragraph or two with a couple of links. At least one post is simply a link to an article I like, plus a little intro from me about why I think it’s relevant. If your e-letter goes out more frequently – like Early to Rise – the time you spend on it expands by leaps and bounds.
It takes more time to maintain a blog. For most people, creating fresh content several times a week, or even weekly, requires a certain mindset. It isn’t even that it takes so much time to create the material. (Blog posts are mostly very short pieces accompanied by a link.) What takes time is getting into the groove of blogging – and that involves much more than posting to your own blog. It includes visiting other people’s blogs, reading their posts, and commenting on them. It’s not difficult. It just takes time and practice to get into that mode. Email newsletters, on the other hand, don’t carry the same expectation of freshness, so there is a lot less pressure to produce. You send it out when you like – daily, twice-weekly, monthly, or even occasionally.
A blog attracts more Web traffic. Even if no one ever reads your blog, posting to it regularly can be a tremendous boon to your search engine rankings because search engines love fresh content. Any website with new content will come up earlier in search engine rankings than a site that hasn’t been changed in months (or years). Meanwhile, the traffic an email newsletter drives to your website consists of those who already know you, not new prospects and leads.
Both inspire trust in the visitor. Inspiring trust depends more on the tone you take than the format. If you’ve spent time composing your email newsletter, it will show, and that certainly inspires trust. A blog, with its rapid-fire and often impassioned comments, can convey a sense of impulsiveness, which rarely inspires trust. Trust is important on the Internet (a very anonymous medium), because unless people trust you, they’re not going to buy from you.
If you don’t already have a website to promote your business, a blog is a good first step in that direction. It provides a way for people to find you online without your spending a lot of money or time working with a Web designer or learning Web design software. In fact, some people use a blog as their one and only Web presence.
If you already have a website and are ready to branch out with an email newsletter or a blog, which one should you start with? That depends on your goal. If your goal is to generate revenue from a known group of prospects, an email newsletter is the right choice. If you are less focused on revenue-generation and are looking instead to position yourself as an expert and make it easier for new prospects to find you online, a blog is better.
If both goals make sense in your business plan, by all means do both. Blogs and email newsletter work beautifully hand-in-hand.
Here’s how we do that at Marketing Mentor: I want to be able to reach out to my qualified prospects on a regular basis, to keep reminding them who I am and what I have to offer. I don’t want to wait for them to come back to my website or find time to read my blog. I want to be in their inboxes, rather than on their browsers.
So we have a static website marketing-mentor.com/, with content that doesn’t change very often, an e-mail newsletter, Quick Tips from Marketing Mentor, that we send out to a list of 8,000 qualified prospects every other week, plus a blog, marketingmixblog.com/, where we post ideas and tidbits at least three times a week.
We use the newsletter to drive traffic to the blog and the website, while the blog also gets our search engine rankings up. People who find the blog are encouraged to sign up for the e-mail newsletter, so we can stay in touch with them and nurture those relationships. We also use the e-mail newsletter to sell e-books, mp3s, and other electronic products. That would never work on the blog.
People need to be motivated to buy from you, and the best way to motivate them is by landing in their inboxes. If the copy is compelling and the timing is right, a connection or a sale is just a click away.

Email marketing involves a great deal more than sales messages. It’s multi-faceted and multi-talented. And if you enjoy thinking outside the box, it’s a marketing tool you can have fun with, developing your own email marketing ideas.
In the meantime, some of these email marketing ideas might be obvious, some might surprise you:
1. Get higher response rates by using email lists that reach small but very specific groups of people, tailoring messages to their particular concerns, interests and desires.
2. Stay in touch with the people more likely than any other group to buy your goods and services – your existing customers – by capturing their email address (with permission, of course) at the time of sale.
3. Build your own email list of potential customers by starting a free email newsletter (ezine) on a subject closely related to your products and expertise.
4. Promote your email newsletter – and get links to your website – by submitting details of your newsletter to ezine directories.
5. Generate long-term sales and minimise unsubscribe rates by providing a consistently relevant and useful newsletter that builds trust and loyalty.
6. Build an email list of potential customers quickly and easily by adding a sign-up page to your website offering details by email of special offers and new products – simpler and less time-consuming than writing a newsletter.
7. Get inbound links and traffic to your website by submitting articles to article-sharing directories used as a source of content by other email newsletters and websites.
8. Get inbound links as well as sales by advertising in web-based ezines which have back issues – including your ad and a link to your website – available to view online.
9. Save money and increase response rates in more expensive marketing channels by using low-cost email marketing options to test your ads (e.g., ezine classified ads are similar in size and format to Google AdWords.)
10. Expand your email list and generate sales by offering a genuinely useful series of emails (e.g. a “mini-course”) to be sent by autoresponder over a period of time, promoting a relevant product or service in each message.
11. Maximise the reach and potential of email promotions by inviting recipients to “forward this message” to friends/colleagues.
12. Build brand image and awareness by including a simple statement about your business and how it differs from the competition in each and every email.
These are just a few ideas for email marketing, designed to show how email marketing can achieve much more than sales.
Email marketing is also highly affordable. In fact, all the above ideas can be put into action for free. So, feel free to make the most of them, and encouraged to develop your own email marketing ideas.
