You have probably seen the “Get Number 1 Keyword Position Instantly for any website” self-proclaimed SEO experts and consultants all over the web. I am sure some of them can actually do that through their so-called secrets, but what if your website sucks? You will have spent all that money and time stuffing your site full of keywords, altering your site’s content to the point where it barely makes sense to humans and you have achieved your Ultimate Goal — “Google Domination”. That is the problem — your goal.

Shouldn’t your goal be to grow your business, get customers, and sell your product or services?

Your site should be designed for people, not just search engines.

I’m sure you understand Google is never going to buy your product — but neither are people if they follow your top ranked link and find… nothing useful.

Can your site be found? SEO can help – but it is one small piece of the greater whole. Quality content which is updated regularly, site design & structure, and insightful marketing are what will make you “Findable”.

It is too easy to get caught up in the competitive nature of search engine ranking for keywords and lose sight of what you are really trying to do. Good quality, regularly updated content is the foundation of any internet marketing SEO strategy.

The job of the search engine is to direct users to what they are looking for. By trying to trick the search engines, you are trying to trick potential customers. Not a great first impression. Make sure you are able to give users what they are looking for and it will be much easier to get that high rank you want. Give your website viewers useful, high quality content such as videos or informative or entertaining blog posts and you will be rewarded with better PageRank, repeat views, quality leads and increased sales!

SEO used to refer to things like making sure the structure and navigation of a site is user friendly, efficient in size and speed, and making sure your title and meta tags matched your message. It still is all that, but the term has been abused by “internet marketers” who can’t seem to figure out how to market anything more than information about “internet marketing”. It is almost like the work at home schemes where you buy a report on how to sell the same report to other people.

That does not mean that SEO should be ignored. Search engine optimization really is essential to the success of your site. However, it must be more than just keyword tricks and those should not be the main part of your strategy. “Real” and effective SEO is not just all the magic tricks and schemes, but is a process that should be taken into account in all phases of development and marketing. Your content should be clear, concise and effective in getting your message across. If it does that, your keywords will already be in it! Your website or blog must function properly — people (and search engines) need to be able to navigate around it. For SEO, quality content is step one, user-friendliness or “usability” is the next step before starting keyword meta tag manipulation and backlink building. Really, most of it should be done all at the same time. It is that holistic synergy thing or whatever new buzzwords I come up with to say “your stuff all has to work together toward the same goal, with each part enhancing the ability of the other parts to achieve their individual goals because it works so much better that way”. (This is why marketing people use buzzwords.) A good internet marketing consultant (like Pittsburgh SEO Consultant, Ker Communications) knows this.

And yes, all those SEO rules and criteria you have read about are very important, too. But they are constantly changing. Keeping up to date on what is important to the search engines — keyword placement, title tags, link popularity, inbound link text, H1 usage, what social media sites have bookmarks to the site, what color socks the web developer was wearing — that requires dedication, continuous research, and a true passion for this line of work… or at least a slightly obsessive compulsive personality.

To do it well also requires a talent in addition to knowledge and diligence. The ability to gain insight regarding what people will type into the search box, what they will click on when they see it, and what will be useful to them and will work for your goals. SEO services work well on their own, but work much better when integrated with the design process, marketing, and even video production. Quality content combined with technical excellence and insightful analysis and marketing instinct. Synergy.

Let me ask you a simple question today: Does your website optimize the search engines? If your answer is a clear no, then your site is not fully yielding the results expected. Its performance is below the required level. Gosh! I see you need to do something about it. You are really denying your website the prosperity it deserves.

Six Ways of Website Optimization

1. Link your site to few reputable complementary sites and get many inbound links from reputable sites. This tells the search engines how valuable your site is.

2. Do you know that your site can fail because of the way you go about affiliate linking? Don’t put affiliate links in poor pages where there are many links. When putting them, use a keyword text to direct surfers to your merchants. This makes your website to be found easily by surfers.

3. Use domain name forwarding strategy. Buy an expired or premium domain name that was previously performing well on the search engines and direct it to your current website. By doing this, you optimize your website on the search engines.

4. Domain name masking is the smartest way to optimize your website on the engines. Surfers won’t ignore clicking your affiliate links if at all you use domain name masking strategy. They won’t feel pitched by sales. They will be in your merchant’s website without knowing it since your affiliate link will not be shown on their web browser bar. As they click them, your site will be ranked well on the search engine.

5. Your online business will never be found on the search engines if you don’t use keywords in your content. Keywords greatly optimize your website on the engines. Use tools that inform you the keywords that surfers are using when searching on the engines. Use the correct density of keywords in your content. Don’t stuff your content with keywords. Search engines will penalize you if you do so.

6. Optimize your website by branding and having a USP (Unique Selling Proposition.) Have a brand name that is friendly to the engines and surfers. It should be a short name without a hyphen and numbers. Have a unique selling proposition that wins surfers.

This improves your website ranking on the engines. Be unique from your competitors. Being unique makes the engines to list your pages on their results page since it’s able to differentiate you from your competitors.

Let me ask you a simple question today: Does your website optimize the search engines? If your answer is a clear no, then your site is not fully yielding the results expected. Its performance is below the required level. Gosh! I see you need to do something about it. You are really denying your website the prosperity it deserves.

Six Ways of Website Optimization

1. Link your site to few reputable complementary sites and get many inbound links from reputable sites. This tells the search engines how valuable your site is.

2. Do you know that your site can fail because of the way you go about affiliate linking? Don’t put affiliate links in poor pages where there are many links. When putting them, use a keyword text to direct surfers to your merchants. This makes your website to be found easily by surfers.

3. Use domain name forwarding strategy. Buy an expired or premium domain name that was previously performing well on the search engines and direct it to your current website. By doing this, you optimize your website on the search engines.

4. Domain name masking is the smartest way to optimize your website on the engines. Surfers won’t ignore clicking your affiliate links if at all you use domain name masking strategy. They won’t feel pitched by sales. They will be in your merchant’s website without knowing it since your affiliate link will not be shown on their web browser bar. As they click them, your site will be ranked well on the search engine.

5. Your online business will never be found on the search engines if you don’t use keywords in your content. Keywords greatly optimize your website on the engines. Use tools that inform you the keywords that surfers are using when searching on the engines. Use the correct density of keywords in your content. Don’t stuff your content with keywords. Search engines will penalize you if you do so.

6. Optimize your website by branding and having a USP (Unique Selling Proposition.) Have a brand name that is friendly to the engines and surfers. It should be a short name without a hyphen and numbers. Have a unique selling proposition that wins surfers.

This improves your website ranking on the engines. Be unique from your competitors. Being unique makes the engines to list your pages on their results page since it’s able to differentiate you from your competitors.

Yahoo is an example of a topical search engine (also sometimes referred to as a vertical search engine). The methodology of a topical search engine is to focus on specific industries, sectors or topics. Yahoo is still a 100% human edited directory, with secondary search engine results generated through Google. That, of course, means that a good listing in Google will also mean visitors from Yahoo as well. Yahoo is still one of the largest traffic generators around, in terms of search engines and web directories. A listing with Yahoo involves “suggesting” a URL, which is then reviewed by a Yahoo editor (find the proper category and click on the “suggest a site” link at the bottom of Yahoo’s home page). Unfortunately, the listing process at Yahoo can take quite some time before your site gets recommended.

As an advertiser, marketer, business owner or website owner, you’ll need to know how all this applies to you. The first thing you’ll need to do is to get your site listed in the Yahoo directory where it’s a good fit.

You can go ahead and get your site listed through the above method, which can take some time and doesn’t have any guarantees.

The other option is Yahoo’s Express Service for expedited listings. Express has a 9 annual fee, with a guarantee that it will be reviewed within seven days – but no guarantees that it will make it into directory listings. Once you are listed in a directory, though, the upgrade to “featured” status is pretty easy. There will be a monthly fee involved, from to 0 per month depending on the directory that your site is placed in. Listing fees only require a credit card number, and your monthly fee will automatically be charged to the card.

A featured listing does appear up top in the directory, so you won’t have to worry about your site being buried somewhere deep down in the listings. Coupled with an attractive, well-optimized site, this could go a long way toward your marketing goals. Featured listings, of course, also mean targeted advertising, which means people who are already on the search for your product or service being steered your way. The fixed cost of an upfront buy followed by a regular monthly charge can also be a help when it comes to staying within your marketing budget (while still trying for a reach to as many customers as possible.). Yahoo also offers banner ads (through My Display Ads), with easy-to-customize ads using their own design tools. Yahoo’s banner ads can be narrowed down to specific geographic areas, site-content categories and target demographics, along with various daily costs. Their costs can be broken down into pay per click or pay per impression, and Yahoo offers daily reports on clicks, impressions and conversions.

As for optimization …

Along with featured listings, another surefire way to up your status on Yahoo is to buy keywords through Overture, Yahoo’s subsidiary. Yahoo/Overture’s pay per click model sells keywords pertaining to your business, and results from web searches for your specific keywords will appear in your Yahoo Sponsor Results box. The Overture distribution network also takes in many other top portal sites and search engines, including CNN.com, AltaVista and MSN.

Dogpile / Webcrawler

Dogpile is an example of a meta-search engine (also known as a federated search). Meta search engines scour several other databases and/or search engines, then compiles the results into a single list or displays each one according to source. The idea of a meta-search engine is that the Web is too vast for any one search engine to do an adequate job of indexing all of it; more comprehensive and complete results can be seen from aggregating results from several search engines.

The results of meta-search engines can vary, but they can still take in more of the web at once than any single stand-alone search engine. The other side of the coin is that the results can be less relevant; meta-search engines don’t have direct access to the databases of the search engines they’re pulling information from, and don’t know the “alchemy” that goes into their rankings.

Google / AltaVista

Google and AltaVista fall into the category of open search engines.

A Google search is actually a series of localized websites. A typical Google search will bring you definition links to dictionary sites and Wikipedia, links to other searches (i.e. if Google believes one of your words to be misspelled) and many, many others. Google will typically break up your query into a sequence of search terms, unless you put quotation marks around a phrase (telling Google to look for the entire phrase rather than one word at a time). Google’s Advanced Search feature allows other information to be figured into the search (such as date of first retrieval) to narrow down search results.

Google has evolved into one of the web’s biggest web portals, with a staggering number of extra features such as:

Weather
Stock quotes
Sports scores
Unit of measure conversion
Currency conversion
Maps
Synonym search
U.S. Government website search
Travel data and airport info

Since Google has come to dominate the search engine field so completely, the research (and speculation) on its search criteria has turned into an entire industry. Since much of the Google methodology for search engine ranking is a closely kept trade secret (to keep unscrupulous webmasters from manipulating results) and Google changes their 200-plus factors for rank regularly, much of it remains speculation. The following, however, is pretty certain when it comes to Google rank:

Google’s crawlers (or spiders) look at on-page factors such as H1 heading elements, keywords in copy, image alt attribute values and title elements
The crawlers look at off-page optimization factors like anchor text and keywords in URLs
The crawlers like fresh content (forums, blogs, articles, etc) a lot better than older stale content
Quality inbound links to your site can help page rank greatly

This is a gross oversimplification – of course there’s a lot more to it than that.

But the general idea is to work with Google’s relevance algorithm by using all these factors and more. Google does make the basics of these principles public; they’ve published guidelines for website owners or webmasters to use when they’d like to raise their rankings by working along with SEO consultants.

So …

Those are some of the basics of how search engines work and how you can get the most out of them. Yahoo, Dogpile and Google all operate on different principles and methodologies, but they all keep their methodologies fairly consistent. Each has their pros and cons for website owners and their own nuts-and-bolts when it comes to listings, relevance and optimization. But with some study, some consultation with a knowledgeable SEO specialist and a fair amount of trial-and-error, you can figure out how to use them all to help your business and boost your web presence.

How to Write for Web Visitors AND Search Engines

Visualize your site achieving top search engine results.
Now imagine the wonder you would feel if your well-ranked website’s copy jumped off the screen, lodging itself in the mind of each site visitor, and unconsciously causing every one of them to take the action YOU want them to take.
Think it’s rocket science?
Think again.
In fact, you’re reading an example of this type of writing now. If you want to know how you can please the search engines AND your site visitors at the same time with your website copy writing, read on.
Writing for site visitors or writing for search engines is certainly not mutually exclusive.
If your Web page isn’t seen by potential site visitors in the first place by ranking poorly in the engines, it’ll never be read. But . . . if it’s only optimized for the engines and doesn’t read well, people will click away without taking action.
I want to achieve both and I bet you do too.
After reading this, you will understand how to write in a style that greatly pleases the search engines, resulting in vastly improved rankings AND at the same time, causes people to take the action you want. The action is usually to buy something or fill out a form.
How Your Copy Appears:
First let’s briefly consider the layout of your copy. Because if you want people to stay on your site, read your copy and take an action, the copy has to be very easy to read on a computer screen.
It’s simple really. Just use lots of white space. See how so far my ‘paragraphs’ are very, very short? Sometimes it’s just a few words. You ought to do the same. You can further break up your writing using sub-headings, bolded words, lists, bullets and boxes. See how I made the box above? Anything in a box will get read, and it’s a great way to create white space.
Avoid big blocks of text at all costs.
The key to successfully formatting your Web copy writing is to make  it as easy as possible for people to scan and skim through your text.
People skim online copy, so the more you break it up and make the important stuff stand out, the better.
Next, always remember who you are writing for. Hold a vision of your reader in your head as you write. Choose and combine your words in a way that speaks directly to each reader as if you’re just having a conversation with them alone. Write like you talk.
Here are my other top copy writing guidelines:
•    Use the word ‘You’. Don’t write about yourself or your organization. No one cares.
•    Use an active voice, not passive. Use action verbs often and well.
•    Appeal to people’s emotions.
•    Appeal to as many of the senses as possible. Paint a picture.
•    As your grammar school English teacher constantly preached, “Show, not tell.”
•    Use stories to illustrate your theme. People relate to and remember stories.
•    Describe how you can make your reader’s life easier or better.
•    Actually ask them to buy (or fill out the form) in your sales copy.
•    Always describe the benefits and not the features (features tend to bore people to tears).
•    Edit your work at the end to ensure it says what you want in the simplest and briefest way.
•    Buy ‘Hypnotic Writing’ by Joe Vitale. I used some of his ideas in this article. Great book, thanks Joe!
The search engine algorithms today, especially Google’s, are now getting so sophisticated that the line that separates good search engine copy and good people copy is becoming very blurred. In other words, the better you write in general, the better that writing will get ranked in the search engines anyway, all other things being equal.
Keep in mind that a large part of what makes a page rank well is made up of off-page factors, meaning the links and anchor text that point to your website have a big part in determining your site’s rank. But on-page factors such as your copy writing for example play an important role too.
So you’re writing to get ranked well, to convert visitors into customers or list members and to attract inbound links. As you write, keep these three important goals in mind.
On-Page Writing that Please Search Engines:
Think of each page of your website as its own one-page school essay. If you remember back to English class your teacher would ask you to write an essay and be sure to determine in advance what the theme, or thesis, of the essay was going to be. One theme per essay and that’s what the essay was “about”.
When it comes to Web pages, think in terms of themes too, but condensed down to a keyword phrase. Each page on your site should have one main keyword phrase that sums up the entire page. This is the phrase for which you want the page to rank well.
When you sit down to write copy for a particular page, first determine what its theme is going to be and then reduce that down to a descriptive and succinct keyword phrase.
For example, if you determine that the theme for the page is ‘all the chairs we sell in our furniture store are listed on this page with prices and descriptions’. The keyword phrase for this could be ‘wooden chairs with prices’.
Again, get inside the heads of the potential people you want visiting and buying from you and really try to determine what keyword phrases they would choose to type into a search engine to find the particular page you’re creating.
Before you even start writing website copy the first step is to determine the page’s main theme using a keyword phrase and then make a list of related words and phrases.
Grab some paper and a pen or open up Notepad and begin to create a list of these keyword phrases. Phrases that are two to five words in length are best.
Next, use an online keyword tool to find variations and add the good ones to your ever-growing list. The best tool in my opinion is Google’s Adwords Keyword Tool.
Now that Google’s Instant is live you can also simply begin typing a phrase into the search bar and a drop down box will appear suggesting ways to finish the phrase for you. Use some of these hints as well.
Now you ought to have an excellent list of a words and phrases that are related to your main keyword phrase.
The idea then is to weave the words and phrases on your list into your website copy.
Think of it this way. While you’re writing for your site visitor, while you’re using the rules I spelled out in the bullet list above, try to use the related words and phrases from your list. Furthermore, use synonyms, antonyms, stemming, plurals, and various tenses, contextual words, supporting vocabulary and modifiers as well.
Let’s look at an example. If the main keyword phrase of my page is ‘antique wooden chair prices’ then here’s a possible list I would come up with first:
Aged, historic, old-fashioned, traditional, old wood chairs, antique rocking chairs, wooden chairs, seats, old seating, antique oak furniture, antique pine furniture, refurbished chairs, dining room furniture, tables, wood, cherry, pricing, affordable, cost, for sale, on sale, how much do wooden chairs cost
Get the idea?
So here’s my try at using words and phrase from the list in my copy.

Below you will find pricing for historic yet affordable antique pine, oak and cherry chairs.
Imagine finding the perfect old-fashioned chair with which to compliment your house.
Take in the intricate carvings and woodwork as you approach it. Feel the polished oak wood arm rests in your hands as you lower yourself onto the magnificent aged seat. Then hear your house guests compliment you on such a glorious and rare find that you had the good taste to buy.
You will find that our furniture return policy guarantees that you’re taking no risk when purchasing antique wooden chairs from us.
And you’ll notice that every chair we list below has an associated price.
Click the ‘Buy Now’ button and after a couple more clicks, you’ll have one of our famous antique wooden chairs shipped directly to your home in no time.

Not only will this sales copy appeal to readers, it will please Google too.
With people in mind, I used the word ‘you’ a lot. I appealed to their senses and their emotions, explained how it would improve their life and outright told them to buy now. I showed how buying a chair could make their lives a little better and explained how easy it is to accomplish.
With search engines in mind I made sure that almost every word and phrase supports the theme of ‘antique wooden chair prices’. And I have used lots of synonyms (antique, aged, old fashioned, historic), stemming (price, pricing), modifiers (affordable, glorious, magnificent), and contextual and related words (chair, furniture, home, house, woodwork, carvings, arm rests).
It’s important that you write for both search engines and site visitors, and now you know how. By following the layout conventions mentioned above, the copy writing  guidelines and the ways to consider the search engines when writing that outlines, you’ll be well on your way to pleasing both your visitors and search engines.

Content is King! Have you heard that saying yet? Search engine experts are practically using it as a mantra. What does it mean and why is it true?

In the context of websites and search engines, when experts say that content is king, they mean that building additional pages of text is one of the best things you can do to improve your search engine rankings and number of visitors. Anyone that has attended any of my classes or asked me to work on their internet marketing has heard me include this in my recommendations. In fact, I tell everyone that search engine optimization (SEO) basically comes down to three factors: On-page factors, linking, and content. Most people generally think of the first two when trying to rank better.

So why is content so important?

For starters, search engines don’t rank websites, they rank web pages.

Read that sentence again and think about it for a moment. What it means is that the more pages you make on your site, the more chances you have of any of those pages ranking better. To start with, it’s simply a law of averages. To illustrate, if you want to win a raffle, you might buy more tickets. The more opportunities you have, the higher probability of coming out on top. Of course, this is over-simplifying a little. After all, you can buy a whole lot of lottery tickets (which I don’t recommend) and will still typically lose the lottery.

To increase your chances, each page of content should center around a keyword phrase or two. Use that phrase several times within the text. Use it in the Title tag and in a heading or two. Now repeat that process over and over again. Make a page of content every day if at all possible. If not, make one per week. This is work that will definitely pay off over time.

As a side-benefit, content can also be distributed to other sites and newsletters. Put a nice bio about yourself and a link to your website at the bottom, and you are on your way to gaining traffic and growing links. Another nice side-benefit is that if your content is good, others will link to you. And we all know how important inbound linking is to search engines.

So what exactly is content? What pages of content could you make for your site? We’ll discuss this in a future newsletter.

Are you avoiding that crucial step, waiting until everything is just right? Doing all your research to make sure you don’t “do it” wrong? Well, your not alone. Many folks who could be making tons of money online, are missing out because of their internet-phobia. Companies that know what they are doing, charge an arm and a leg to produce an effective website. But with all the millions of searches going on every minute, there must be room for us!

There is.

First of all, you need a domain name, a hosting company, and a little understanding of HTML (Hyper Text Markup Language.) Domain name registration and hosting accounts are very affordable services offered by many companies and they are all pretty similar in what they offer. Once you have a domain name registered and a hosting account, you will be able to upload your pictures and pages to the internet.

Your website is composed of pages, images, and other files that must be readable to internet browsers such as Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari, Google Chrome, etc. Most pages can be created in notepad and saved with an html (.html) extension. HTML codes for page layout are beyond the scope of this article, but I will talk about a few Meta Tags which every site NEEDS: Title Tag, Keywords Tag, and Description Tag. In addition to these, you will need keyword rich pages with content relevant to your description, title, and keywords tags.

You also have to keep links on all your pages to all the other pages. This allows the search engines to find all the pages on your site. I highly recommend placing titles within the code of your links. This should be the title of the page it leads to and support the importance of both pages, the page with the link, and the page linked to.

Your site is a collection of information. It is like a book, an electronic digital book. Every book has a title. But once inside, each chapter is titled as well. The table of contents is like the menu. Your website needs to have an interactive menu that links to pages with a title, keywords, and a description for each page. This is what search engines love and the more they love your site, the higher your page will rank. They want to recommend websites with organized, well indexed information and relevant content within each page. This is probably the most important part of making your site “search engine friendly. You must match the title of each page within your site to the description of the page (description tag) and the keywords used in the page (and keywords tag.) Don’t be overwhelmed, it is much less confusing than you think.

Once your site is indexed within search engine databases, the next most powerful step to increase your page rank in search engine results is valuable inbound links. These links, from other websites to yours, are extremely important. The higher ranked the website is, the more valuable the link will be. I mean, if you read a good book and it talked about an amazing vacation getaway, wouldn’t you start planning that vacation as soon as you put the book down? Do you know how many people buy a book because Oprah puts it on her book list? Likewise, if an important, well accepted website links to your site, search engines believe your site must be noteworthy.

Keyword selection is an important part of your online marketing plan. When you first start out, don’t expect to be listed high in search results for phrases that are competed over heavily. General words like “car” or “cheap” will have millions of results appearing before your site regardless of how well your page is organized. Bidding or paying for these types of keywords may be a better way to get to the top of the list (in sponsored or paid search results.)

So, that pretty much summarizes it. You need a domain name, a hosting account, and something to write about. Think about what are people searching for that you can help them with. Use keyword tools to find highly searched but low competition search phrases related to your content. Use these phrases in your pages, bold them, and use them in your meta (title, keywords, and description) tags and in the names and titles of your links. Then, find other companies in your industry or websites related to your topic, and contact them about linking to one other. And don’t forget good old fashioned word of mouth. Traffic, is not only the desired effect, but actually increases the value of your page and your position in search engine results.
