How To Optimize Your Website For Spanish Search Engines

Search Engine Optimization (SEO)
Before going into production on any website, search engine optimization needs to be considered as it is more effectively implemented during the initial design phase of a website. It is much more difficult to optimize, well modify, an existing website for the search engines than it is to optimize a new website to be search engine friendly.
Since starting from scratch is the best way to go with your Spanish (Generation Equis targeted) website, it is best to have search engine optimization planned and implemented from the beginning of the website development stage.
Keep in mind that close to ten percent of all online searches in the United States are conducted in Spanish, while less than one company out of fifty-thousand has listed their keywords in Spanish.
Does this sound like an opportunity? English and Spanish search engines offer free targeted organic traffic so an Internet user can easily find what they are looking for. In most cases the more time your website is listed with a search engine, the better placement that your website will receive. Better placement results in more visitors!
Best of all, with the right planning and search engine optimization they will find your website first. Why? Because your website is at the top of the search engine results and that will bring your website more visitors. How often do you go to page 2 or 3 of your web search results to find what you are looking for? Not likely very often, unless you are looking for your own website.
The key strategies to consider while optimizing your website for the search engines are:
•Web Crawler Friendly Design: Just like targeting the general Internet population, your Generation Equis site still needs to have the same crawl friendly design of a traditional website; you still need an error free site, a robots.txt file and an XML sitemap.
•Using Keywords: Your domain name, tags, links, images and content must be keyword rich with both English and Spanish keywords that will attract Generation Equis visitors to your site. You must also consider culturally significant keywords such as; Hispanic, Latino and Latina as well as accents as they will truly set you apart from other Spanish websites.
•Search Engine Submission: Manual submission to the major English search engines and directories will help drive traffic to your website. It is imperative that you submit your site to the Spanish search engines as well. Finally, keep in mind that the major English websites such as; Google, MSN, Lycos and Alta Vista also have Spanish websites that require a separate submission for your Spanish site.
Now let’s go into more detail about each of these topics.
Web Crawler Friendly Design
The first step in the search engine optimization process is ensuring that your web developer, whether you are wearing that hat or your site is being built by an employee or contractor, builds a search engine friendly website.
Similar to a traditional English website, your Spanish website should be built free of coding errors, contain a robots.txt file and an XML sitemap. After all, if the search engines cannot fully access your website, due to design or implementation errors, you will be penalized by the search engines resulting in a lower ranking in the search engines, or no ranking at all, and less visitors to your website. If Generation Equis is not able to locate your pages, what is the point of investing time and money in search engine optimization?
There are ample tools available to validate HTML or scripting as well as tools and programs that will verify your robots.txt file. HTML or scripting languages such as PHP are the programming languages used to build most websites. A Robots.txt file is a simple text file in your main web directory that generally has a link to your sitemap so the search engines can find it and it also tells the search engines which website pages that they should or should not index and present to the public.
An XML sitemap is an index of all of the individual pages contained in your website that assists the search engines in indexing your site’s content. There are plenty of programs available to create an XML sitemap which will even update your sitemap automatically hourly, daily, and weekly, etc to reflect any changes to your site depending on how they are configured.
After setting up your sitemap, your developer should also set up a “cron job” that will ping, or notify, the major search engines each time that your sitemap is updated so they can return and re-index your site to reflect any recent changes.
Using Keywords
Have you ever searched for something on a major search engine like Google, Yahoo or MSN and noticed that there were millions of websites that matched the terms that you searched for? As you know, although Generation Equis has migrated to the Internet in a similar fashion as mainstream America has, it seems as though Corporate America has been a late adopter and is still struggling to reach out to Generation Equis online. Online marketing to Hispanics is almost an untapped market wide open for the taking!
Corporate America, and top Internet marketers, may have a monopoly on the majority of the common English keywords with the major English search engines. They are most often listed on the first page of those millions of pages of results that are returned for any given search string. On a positive note, Spanish keywords and Spanish search engines are still wide open for the taking. Not only are Spanish keywords used less often on the web thereby giving you an opportunity to receive good SERP (Search Engine Results Placement) but they are often erroneously used due to poor translations of English to Spanish, special characters and accents.
Keywords are a single word or phrase you establish which are the right words or phrases that people would think of when searching the major search engines for your business, product, or service. It is believed that a big component of the secret algorithm that search engines use when indexing your site and deciding where to rank your website in search results is your domain name.
Some people ask what is so important about a domain name. Many of our English website clients have told us that they thought if you register the shortest, catchiest domain name or having your company’s name in your web address that you do not have to market your website and the sales will start trickling in.
We have also had people tell us that they have heard about the seven figure plus price tags that the sale of domains like Drugs.com and CreditCard.com brought in so they want to register a bunch of short and catchy domain names and just sell them in a few years for millions and retire.
The truth is that the very few high yielding domains that sold for millions of dollars were initially registered decades ago by early adopters to the Internet. A few years back, pre-recession, We remember more than a few colleagues making six, and in some cases seven, figure profits off of houses they bought only ten years ago. Recent events have proved that those days are over. As far as short and catchy English domains go, good luck finding one and even if you do, you will still need to market your website. Now do not get discouraged about finding a good domain name for your Spanish site because if you remember Corporate America has not really jumped on the Spanish web development bandwagon yet and neither have most of the domain name speculators; AKA squatters; or web developers. Your focus on Generation Equis should allow you to register a short and catchy Spanish domain that you may even be able to make a little money off of someday when the majority of Corporate America jumps on the Generation Equis bandwagon.
Adding your company’s name to your website really depends on the nature of your business and the goals of your website. In some cases you need to use your company name in your website so your current customers can find you and you can protect your brand. In a lot of cases, people are using the Internet to drive incremental sales by marketing to new customers and prospects. If that is the case you just need to keep in mind that if they are going to search for a website with your company name in it they probably will not be new customers.
We generally tell customers, depending on their goals, that the key to finding a great domain is identifying an available domain that is rich in keywords related to their product or service. In the absence of needing to brand your company by using a web address with your company name in it to achieve your goals, why not use a keyword rich domain that will help with your placement in the search engines and new customers can associate with your products or services.
Using effective keywords during the design of your site is also a critical piece of search engine optimization. The first step in using effective keywords is keyword research. This is where your bilingual web developer, a bilingual employee or a bilingual friend can really be an asset. You need to create a list of potential keywords that a customer would search for so they can be translated.
Assuming that you have an English website, try to start your list of potential keywords by looking at the English keywords that have been successful for you and have the keywords properly translated to Spanish. Of course only translate them if the Spanish version would still apply to your business and would be a keyword that Generation Equis users may search for.
Keep in mind that any, and all, translations have to be done by a fully bilingual person. Have you ever used an online translation program to translate something from a foreign language to English only to find that the translation makes no sense at all? You had a better contextual understanding looking at the picture above the foreign language text than you did when the translator software, or program, that you used translated it into English? Translation is just another opportunity for you to excel in your search engine placement. You can rest assured that it is more than likely that some of your competitors made the mistake during the translation process of improperly translating keywords creating yet another opportunity for your website to rank higher in the search engines results.
To get ideas for keywords, go back to your notes, bookmarks, or favorites, and take a look at your competitor’s websites. By right clicking on your competitor’s site and selecting the “view source” option you will be able to see the keywords that they are using in their meta-tags and description tag. Obviously you do not want to copy their keywords and you never want to use their name or an intellectual property protected keyword such as their brand but it may help generate some ideas for your list of potential keywords list by giving your some keyword ideas to expand on.
Sit down with your bilingual web developer, employee or friend and brainstorm all of the words, or sets of words, that you think your customers would use when searching for your products as well as breaking out a thesaurus and looking up applicable synonyms. Then add their culturally and grammatically correct translations to your potential keyword list.
Do not hesitate to also add English keywords to your list of potential keywords as long as they are culturally significant such as; Hispanic, bilingual and Latina and are commonly used by members of Generation Equis. Stay away from using English keywords like the word, “Spanish” or the string, “Spanish shoes” as most Spanish speakers searching for a Spanish website would use the word Espanol, or Español, in their search if they were looking for a Spanish website and if someone searches for, “Spanish shoes” they are most likely looking to buy shoes from Spain on an English website versus searching for a Spanish site that sells shoes or “zapatos” in Spanish.
The Spanish language uses accent marks and special characters in some of their words but not all keyboards support using accents and special characters so it is important to consider adding both versions of Spanish words, with and without the accent, to your list of potential keywords. Proper use of accents may also be a great tool for you to get to the first page of results in the search engines so min your P’s and Q’s or rather mind your ñ’s and Ñ’s.
Now that you have compiled a list of potential keywords, it is time to research their popularity. Their popularity will tell you how often your keywords are searched for in a given time period so you can identify the more popular keywords. This can be done in a couple of ways. Either enter the keywords from your list of potential keywords into the major search engines as well as the Spanish search engines and see how many, what type and which of your competitors sites come up in the results or go the easy route and use a tool specifically designed for this. We recommend using Google Suggest, Overture, or Wordtracker to measure the popularity of your keywords. Be sure to rank each keyword on your list by popularity and keep the forty highest ranked keywords at the top of your list while retaining the others for future advertising campaigns.
With your keyword list in hand it is now time to sit down with the web developer and plan out the keyword placement for your site. A good strategy is to select your top ten ranked keywords to optimize your homepage. When using keywords to optimize a webpage you should focus on keyword density in your tags, headings, links, images and content while avoiding excessive repetition. A good rule of thumb to go by is that if it makes sense when you read it or it is in context, it is not too excessive.
Meta-tags provide information about a given web page, most often to help search engines categorize them correctly. They are hidden in the source code of the web page, do not affect how the page is displayed and are not visible to visitors unless they view the source code of your web page. Meta-tags allow you to insert keywords into the title, description and keywords of your page so they will be indexed by the search engines.
In addition to meta-tags, the alt tags of your web page can be a great place to insert your keywords. Alt tags were developed to present text to visitors when an image does not load and to provide a textual description of an image. Alt tags are somewhat hidden to visitors unless they mouse over the images they are attached to.
Links are also a great location for your keywords. Whether the links are outbound, to other websites, or inbound, to other pages in your website, try to use your keywords if possible when creating your links.
In addition to links, your image files can be a great place to use your keywords. Instead of naming your images logo.jpg or button.jpg try inserting your keywords into your filename. For example our site logo is named GenerationEquisMedia.jpg versus logo.jpg.
This strategy not only gives you better keyword density on your web page, it also optimizes your page for the “image search” that a lot of the major search engines offer.
Content and text are another great venue for keywords. The challenge is providing keyword rich text and content without distracting the user. If your text and content is written with your keywords in mind, it will only help with your placement in the search engine results.
Finally keep in mind that search engines love keywords in the headings and bolded print of your text and content.
Once you have planned how to optimize your homepage, select the individual pages of your site and plan on using three keywords from your top ten ranked keywords list and use three, different when possible, keywords from the remaining top forty ranked keywords list.
The goal is to optimize each page of your site for different keywords thereby increasing the chances of one of your pages being found no matter which of your keywords is searched for.
Search Engine Submission
There are a couple of basic methods you can use to submit your site to the major search engines. You can either submit the home, or index page, of your website or you can submit your XML sitemap. Either way, you need to decide whether you are going to automatically submit your site to the search engines or do so manually.
We always recommend manual submission as it is in some cases better received by the search engine and at times can give you additional drill-down or category information that is not available during automated submission.
Although Generation Equis uses the major English search engines such as Google, Yahoo, and MSN, they also utilize Spanish search engines as well as Spanish versions of the major English search engines.
You cannot stop at just submitting your Spanish site to the major search engines, you also need to submit your site to the Spanish version of the mainstream English search engines such as the Spanish version of Google, Yahoo and MSN.
It is also imperative that you submit your website to the Spanish specific search engines such as; Terra, Mexico Global and Univision.
To properly submit your website to the Spanish specific search engines, you will need a text file with the following information, in Spanish, available to copy and paste into the submission fields:
Title: The title of your website.
Description: The description of your website that you want to appear on the search engine results page.
Categories: Two relevant categories that apply to your website.
Email: An email account that you are open to receiving spam email in. It is not a good idea to use your regular email address.
Directories are another way to freely market and promoteyour site to Generation Equis as well as build quality inbound links to your site that the search engines recognize and reward you for.
Submitting your site to the Spanish directories such as; Hispanic Surf, Top 100 Latino and Busca Pique is another important piece of search engine optimization.
Directory submissions often require a manual submission as well as a complete description so it is important that your bilingual web developer, employee or friend completes the submission on your behalf.

People who use search engines are looking for what they want. Search engine operators have a vested interest in providing a list of sites the searchers want. Webmasters and site owners have a vested interest, for our purposes, in finding people that want what they offer.
In general, the World Wide Web is a linked network for connecting searchers with what they want. Hence, the importance of links.
Webmasters have a vested interest in increasing the quantity of links from outside their sites to their sites, but the historical problem with mere quantity has been systemic to the web. Searchers became overwhelmed by unwanted information–link spam. Links indiscriminately broadcast to increase quantity also produced unmanageable clutter and inefficiency for search engines.
One answer to the problem of unbridled link quantity has been the organization of sites in directories. Directories like Yahoo! arrange sites into categories, making searches more manageable. Site submission to some directories are free, some require payment. Some directories are highly valued, some less so. Sites must qualify to be placed on certain directories and be categories appropriately if they are.
Another answer to link spam has been the sometimes-difficult process of rating the quality of links. For example, a recommendation from a reputable site adds to the reputation of the recommended site–and conversely, a recommendation from a site with a poor reputation can be detrimental to the recommended site. Search engines use link quality (among other factors) to rank sites closer to or farther from the top of the list when searches are made.
Similarly, if a webmaster places a link to his or her own site on another site, it may be valued less (by search engines) than a link placed by someone making an independent judgment about the site. Google discounts links easily placed on social networking sites by webmasters referring to their own sites, at least.
Link quality can also be related to relevance. How many persons viewing a page for tissue paper would also welcome a link on that page to a site regarding tin mining? On the flip side, a link placed voluntarily by a cat-related site to a dog-related site may be based on the earned reputation of the dog site and be relevant and helpful to pet-owning searchers.
If the cat and dog sites place links to each other, the searcher may not know it, but the search engine may view the arrangement as “you scratch my back, I’ll scratch yours,” and devalue the quality of the link. However, the links are of some advertising value to the site owners because of the relevance. If one webmaster/site owner had both a cat and a dog site, he could similarly benefit from linking the two. The webmaster’s pet-related blog could link to both.
Articles published on article marketing sites can also add links to the webmaster’s site, and will have greater usefulness or quality if the article contents are somehow relevant to the link.
Of course, the webmaster may benefit somewhat from exposure even where relevance may be dubious and link quality minimal. In addition to social media, exchanging links, article marketing (above), using buy high PR links, advertising exposure can be gained in comments on blogs and forums that allow such links or by hiring the Link building Services.
However, if the blog or forum controllers find mere comment Spam, they may choose not to display the comment and link. Comments must be valuable and engage in the social network, blog, or forum discussion. And preferably, the topic and the linked site are relevant to each other.
Understanding searchers and search engines helps webmasters and site owners build up a quantity of quality links to increase their targeted advertising exposure and search engine ranking. Short cuts probably will not work in the long run.

Here are few tips to get rank top on best search engines.
Use your keyword phrase in headlines: Headline tags (h1, h2, h3, etc.) are a great place to use your keyword phrase and secondary keywords. Search engines recognize that headlines are more important than the surrounding text, and so assign greater value to keywords found there.
Use your keyword phrase in anchor text of links: Link text is another great place to put your keyword phrase. Links stand out on most Web pages, and so are given higher priority than surrounding text.
Ask other people for links to your page: A great way to get inbound links is to simply ask for them. But remember that excessive cross-linking can be viewed as spammy, so be careful about trading links or otherwise buying links on external sites.
Try to get your keyword phrase inside incoming links: Inbound links are a great way to improve your page rank. But you can’t really control how people link to your pages. Chances are they won’t use a phrase that has anything even remotely close to your keyword phrase. Remember that they are doing you a favor by linking to you. If it makes sense, you can ask them to change the text of the link, but be careful, as people can be very touchy, and you might just get your link removed.
Try to get links from reputable sites: Reputable sites that link to you will increase your reputation. After all, if a reputable site feels that your site is valuable enough to link to, that means that your page has more value. You can tell if a site is considered reputable both by how high it appears in search engines and it’s Google PageRank. Also, .edu sites have a higher reputation because they represent schools and universities.
Try to get links from similar sites: Inbound links from sites similar to your own are important as well. This indicates that your site does have content related to that topic. Plus, it indicates that your competition finds your site valuable, and that gives your site more credibility.
Try to get links from .edu, and .gov sites: Sites that are on .edu and .gov top-level domains have a large amount of credibility because they are very difficult to get. So if you can get the designers of those sites to link to you that gives your site more credibility as well.
Create as much content as you can: Content is king. The more content you have on your site, the more there is to be indexed and appear in search engines.
Keep your site live as long as possible: Older pages (at the same domain) will rank higher than newer ones.

In the first part of this article we looked at ways that you can use the sponsored listings on search engines to drive visitors to your website. This time around weâre going to be looking at boosting your website in the organic listings on search engines, a process known as Search Engine Optimisation. If youâre a website builder, then youâre going to want to get this right from the start.
Search Engine Optimisation
This is the process by which your website appears on the left hand side of the search engine results page. Also referred to as the âorganicâ results, Google decides what to put on the results page by sending out âspidersâ that search the web, reading every page and categorising them into a huge directory. The spiders decide what your website is all about, and then decide how important your website is. There are two things you need to do in order to appear high up in the results. First, make it very clear to the spiders what your website is about. Second, make your page appear very important. This is a whole art in itself, but here are the basic areas you need to look at
Changes you can make to your website – âon page optimisationâ
There are two separate ways to optimise your website so you can tell the search engine spiders what each page is about. The first is to modify the non-visible elements, such as the page title, meta keywords and meta descriptions. Within Webeden.co.uk this is very easy to do in the control panel â in fact its an important reason to build a website using the Sitemaker platform. Just go to âAdminâ and then from drop down menu choose âsite keywordsâ and âsite descriptionâ. Enter the keywords and information that you want to appear for. If your site has many different pages then choose different keywords for each page. Its important that these keywords reflect the actual visible content of the website, and arenât about a completely different subject
The second way is to tell the search engines what each page is about, is to actually include visible text on your page, and to include your important keywords within the text. You need to make your keywords make up approximately 5% of the total content. Any headlines on the page should include the keywords too. Once again, you need to choose different keywords for each page of your site.
Off-page optimisation
The second and perhaps most important way you can boost your position in the organic SERPs, to reap the benefits when you make your own website, is by generating inbound links to your website from other websites. You also need to make sure those inbound links are using anchor text â thatâs the actual words on the webpage that link to your site â are keywords that you want to appear high up for. So using the pens website example from above, you need to get inbound links to your website using the anchor text âbuy pensâ. Google places about 60% of the value of your website according to these inbound links, by looking at the âvalueâ of the websites linking to you, and the text they use to link to your site.
Thereâs lots of ways to generate inbound links to your website. A few are:
– Make posts in forums that include links to your website
– Make comments on blogs, especially build your own website related ones, and contribute to debates, always including a link back to your site
– Buy links using a service like text-link-ads.com
– Send out press releases that contain links to your site
– Write articles (like this one) and post them in article directories, and Google Knol
– Ask your customers and visitors to link to your site
– Contact the owners of websites that you think would benefit from knowing about your website, and ask them to link to you
– Submit your website to as many as possible website directories, including dmoz.org and Yahoo!
Summary
Search engines are the single biggest source of traffic for websites, and something you need to think about when you build a website. You need to market using search engines in order drive high levels of traffic to your site. This doesnât have to be expensive â in fact it will probably be the most effective source of traffic. Get it right and your website will be a guaranteed success.

Search engine updates come and go but links remain strong. And it looks like link building is here to stay as the single most powerful SEO tactics. The question is where do you get relevant links that will drive your site up in the search results?
One of the most effective but often overlooked aspects of link building is competitive intelligence. The concept is simple. Find out where your rivals get their links, take over their link sources and blow the big guys out the water. Right now I’m gonna tell you a little secret of how to find links to a website and take advantage of the hidden link sources of your competish. And you’re going to learn how to bypass the search engine’s limit of 1,000 links per site and learn more about the linking profile of any website.
Step 1: The easiest way to find links to a website is to go to Yahoo! and run a search for “link:domain . com” (without quotes and spaces). The “link:” operator is used to get a list of links pointing to a site. Once you hit search you’ll be automatically taken to Yahoo! site explorer where you’ll get a list of links.
Step 2: In the ‘Show links dropdown’ choose ‘except from this domain’ to exclude all the internal links that are of no much use to you unless you’re interested in the navigational structure of your competitor.
Step 3: You can just go through the links in your browser or you can export them by pressing ‘Export first 1,000 results to TSV’ link in the upper right-hand corner and explore them later.
Step 4: Now that you’ve got a list of links you need to weed out the poor quality ones and select the best link sources that you can use for your own website.
I bet you have 2 questions: Why Yahoo! and not, say Google? And why only 1,000 links?
- Well Yahoo! is the best source when it comes to finding links. Google knows about as many links as Yahoo! but for some reason it only shows a random sample that’s often very outdated. Why 1,000 links?
- I’m not really sure but all search engine have that limit, maybe it’s their thing. Anyway here’s a trick that gets you past it:
Step 5: Alongside with the link:domainname operator, search for links to internal pages searching for “link:domainname. com/pagename” (without quotes and spaces)This way you’ll get a list of links pointing to a particular page that you can add to the main list you have.
Step 6: If you see that there’re a lot of links coming from one website add the following modifier to your query: “- site:sitename. com” (no quotes, no spaces) to exclude the links from this domain. The links from this site will be replaced by new links in your 1,000 links so you get more data.
Step 7: Remove the dulicates and you have your 1,000+ links list. Sounds like a lot of work? Yeah, I know. All right, I’m going to share the tool I use to have all these steps done for me. It’s called SEO SpyGlass and it’s the only tool that can find more than 1k links from the search engines. It does the above steps and more getting you 6 to 8 thousand links per domain. There are a lot of backlink checkers out there: backlinkwatch, webconfs, iwebtool, SEO Elite, etc. but SEO SpyGlass is the only one that delivers more than a thousand results from the search engines. One important fact about search engines is that they are not humans. Unlike humans, search engines are text-driven to a certain extent. Search engines are only as intelligent as the computer programs that a human being developed to do the job in an automated way. Search engines are automated computer processes that crawls the Internet, indexing the web pages it encountered, processing the search query, calculating its relevancy and retrieving information.
To start, search engines crawls the web by following links from one page to another, starting with a site or page that is very popular. It indexes each page’s content, building a list of words and where these words are found. The index is a database for storing and future retrieval. Indexing is assigning the web page to a particular keyword. A weight is also assigned to the particular index entry. As this is all done by a computer program called a robot or spider, it can only do it as best as it can by analysing words and phrases in the web pages. Because Internet contents keep on changing every second, crawling and indexing is a non-stop continuous task done by the spiders.
When a site visitor searches for a particular keyword, the search engine takes on the next task of processing the search query. It compares the search string with the index database and calculates the relevancy of each of the pages that are indexed. The algorithms used for calculating relevancy differs from search engines to search engines. This explains why different search engines produce different search engine results page (SERP) for the same search query.
What role does keywords play in SEO ?
Keywords are one of the most vital SEO techniques. You optimize your site based on the keywords that you have selected. Selecting the right keywords is important. - add significant amount of value to your readers
- be unavailable anywhere else on the web except on your site
- be up-to-date with new information added and obsolete information discarded

The specifics of a good linking strategy are a bit difficult to nail down. Factors that might be considered include:
1 The anchor text of the link.
2 The discovery date of the link.
3 The growth rate of links to your site.

5 The age of links with older links carrying more value.
6 Numerous links to a new site will be looked at as spam, unless some of the links are from highly valued sites.
7 Link growth that is constant is optimal.
8 Sudden bunches of new links will be devalued as spam.

One-Way or Reciprocal?
One-way links to your site are much better for your site from an SEO standpoint. The main value of an inbound link is in whether or not it will generate traffic to your site. Get reciprocal links from sites that will bring more visitors to your pages.

What is going to make you the most amount of sales if you are trying to sell fishing equipment? A link from an outdoor hobby website or a link from a bubble gum corporation? I think the answer is straightforward, the outdoor hobby website. The trick is to know your market and understand your customer. What age group would your customers be, and what other type of website would they look at if they were interested in your product? What about demographics? Does your product or service need to be promoted only in certain countries? If you’re selling fishing equipment in the U.S. a site who’s traffic comes from outside the U.S. may not be desirable.
There are two types of inbound links – One Way and Reciprocal. Usually a one way link is gained by another webmaster finding your web site useful enough to where they voluntarily post a link to it on their own site. A reciprocal link is a “trade” where both webmasters post links to each others sites. One way links, naturally, are worth more than reciprocal links. Recently much has been written saying that the value of reciprocal links can be very low or none at all.
Be careful when selecting sites for reciprocal linking. Your outbound links are part of your on page SEO and they are important. You do not want to have links pointing to questionable web sites or “link farms”. Always go for sites that are relevant to your own content. The best way to increase the value of your website is to concentrate on linking to helpful and relevant content. Think of the value to your web visitor when choosing other sites to link to. The search engine “spiders” who crawl your site will recognize links to good and especially relevant web sites.
How to look for sites to get inbound links from Do a search on a site that is similar to yours. Type link:http://www.domainname.com in the search box. This will give you a listing of the sites who have links pointing to the site you are interested in. Now you will see who is linking to the site that is similar to yours! Visit the sites and request a link from those who seem the most relevant.
Another good way to increase your inbound links is to join as many quality and relevant forums as you can. Search for forums that deal with the same subject matter as your site. Join the best forums you can find and try to become an active member. Be sure to read the rules or guidelines for any forum before you post a message. The best way to get involved is just to read the messages. If the forum is about an area of interest related to your site’s theme you will be sure to have replies to questions or questions of your own.
Dont forget place a link to your web site in your profile. Take it a step further and put a link to your web site in your signature. The search engines often pick these up!
The Wording of the Text Link
Text links that contain relevant keywords are much more valuable than those that do not. Suppose you have a web site about fly fishing. A link to your site using the words “Learn how to catch the big ones with fly fishing” would be much more preferable to a link that says simply “yourdomain.com”. Obviously you will usually have little control of the format of any inbound links to your site. But when you do have a choice always opt for the use of relevant keywords.
Make SEO an ongoing effort. Inbound links take time to accumulate and it can be very time consuming to search for quality reciprocals. Spend time on it when you can. Always grow. Never consider your web site complete. Update and add new pages as often as you are able. The search engines love fresh, new and updating information.
