The utter importance of good design is difficult to overstate. Design can and will make or break a website. While this little fact may seem self-evident to many people, it is a surprisingly easy fact to overlook, especially at a time when free web design software or templates are available to anyone with passing interest. Such tools are great for encouraging more people to use the Internet and develop new skills, however, if you are looking to establish a ’serious’ presence for you or your organization you will be best served by finding someone with the education, tools, and talent that go into good design.
The look and feel of your website is a reflection of your entire business. The more professional your website navigates, reads, and looks, the more professional your organization will appear to the person doing the navigating, reading, and looking. If the navigation is needlessly confusing, the look ‘off’ or immature, or the content lousy, the conversion from visitor to customer is far less likely to take place.
There is an abundance of literature on the web regarding what constitutes good design, and why good design is so important. An excellent place to go, however, for views and information on good web design is to the designers themselves. Online forums are not good for everything, but web designers use them a lot, and much of what follows on good design is based upon forum posts from web designers on just this topic.
One web designer pointed out that it takes around 50 milliseconds for a visitor to decide whether or not they like a website. This seems like a rather short amount of time, and it is. However, it does not seem so far fetched when we consider our own viewing and browsing habits. Generally, we know the information, service, or product we seek; the more obviously, reliably, and aesthetically these can be delivered the more likely we are to use the website accessed instead of searching for another, ‘better’ one.
With so many websites popping up on any Google search most of us maintain a low threshold for abandoning a particular website for another, potentially better one, down the list. In other words, good design means good first impressions. The longer the colors, format, content, structure, etc. can keep a visitor at the website, the better your chances that they will find what they need, buy, bookmark, or come back. Another web designer put it like this, “Presenting the right information to your audience in an easy to find, read and understandable fashion so that they can find what they need fast.” Good design is important because it not only gives your website a better chance of success, but also because it makes life so much easier and pleasant for those of us who spend any amount of time on the web.
It should also be said that good design is not simply a functional characteristic toward which one should strive. The design says something about your organizations attitude and image. “Design”, as one designer put it, “is what articulates your marketing message.” In other words, the relationship between marketing and design is similar to that of thought and message. A marketing plan is impotent until implemented through design. Regardless of the quality of your product or service, it is the design which first must communicate the value of the product or service in question to the consumer.
These are but the main reasons good design is so important; there are more. When setting about to put your presence on the web take some time and find a designer or design that is ‘right’ for you. While good design is important, it is also important to remember that what constitutes ‘good design’ is relative. Each company and organization must cultivate and project its own unique brand and image. In general, good web design is able to do this in original and functional ways that translate a website’s image into a company’s success.

To get your web site on the Internet, you need a domain name and a hosting company. The following information answers frequently-asked questions about domain name registration and hosting.
Choosing an effective domain name is important to attract potential buyers, increase visibility, convey a professional image, and inspire trust.
What is a domain name?
Having your own domain name is a must for a business web site. Your domain name or web address is a unique name, identifying a specific web site, for example, http://www.yourdomain.com.
You can register your domain name with .com or other extensions, including .net,.org,.info, and .us. Always register the .com name since most people are familiar with it. In addition, consider registering your domain name with.net to prevent competitors or speculators from registering a similar name.
Follow these tips when selecting a domain name
• Choose a descriptive domain name that conveys professionalism and is easy to remember and type.
• Consider a domain name that represents your business name, product name, or indicates your type of business.
• Consider variations of your domain name like making it plural, adding dashes, or underscores.
• Include relevant keywords in your domain name to boost your search-engine ranking.
More tips about domain names
• A domain name can include up to 67 characters, including the .com, .net, .org, .edu, or other extensions.
• Domains cannot contain spaces.
• Domain names are NOT case sensitive, so you can spell your domain in uppercase, lower case, or a combination of both, e.g. http://www.YourDomain.com or http://www.yourdomain.com.
• You can use numbers, letters, and hyphens (dashes) in your domain name, but the web address cannot start or end with a hyphen.
• Special characters such as ! @ # $ % ^ & * ( ) and ? are not permitted in web addresses.
• Avoid confusing characters like 0 (zero), l (one), 2, s, and z to minimize the risk of typos. The number zero (0) can be confused with the letter O, and the number “1″ with the letter “l.”
• If you register a domain containing hyphens, also register the same name without the hyphens, for example, www.your-domain-name.com and www.yourdomainname.com.

or any of the registrars listed by http://www.internic.com.
Registering a domain name
It’s best to choose a hosting company first before registering your domain name. Have the hosting company register or transfer your domain name for you.
You can register your domain name yourself through domain name registration services, known as registrars. Internic provides a list of ICANN-accredited registrars (the organization governing domain names) at http://www.internic.com/regist.html. When submitting a registration or transfer, the registrar will ask for the name of two domain name servers that contain your IP address. Your host will give you that information. Once your domain name has been registered or transferred, it takes approximately 72 hours before it becomes active.
Fees for domain name registration
Each registrar sets its own price for registering domain names. The fees to register a domain name for one year range from to a year. It’s a small price to pay to gain your prospects’ trust. You can register a domain name for one or several years. At the end of the registration term, you must pay a renewal fee to keep your domain name. If you don’t renew, someone else can take your domain name. Some registrars offer free or discounted registration services in connection with other offers, such as web hosting. Make sure they are reliable. Receiving a discount is not worth the delays and hassles you may encounter. Ask your professional web designer for a referral.
Parking a domain name
If you want to reserve a domain name but don’t have a hosting company yet, you may have to pay a fee to a hosting company or registration service to hold or “park” the name. Some registrars charge and others offer parking for free. Make sure they are reliable.
Protect your business and product names by registering them as a domain name before someone else does, and renew the registration before it expires.
IMPORTANT TIP: When registering your domain name, make sure you are both the billing contact and administrative contact. If your hosting company lists itself as the billing contact, you won’t have much leverage to keep your domain name if you decide to switch hosts.
Keep the Same Email When Changing Hosting
When changing hosting companies, you can keep the same domain name and email address connected to that domain name, e.g. www.webmaster@yourdomain.com. You simply transfer your domain name to a different hosting company.

Once you have taken the step of creating your website you then need to focus on how to get people to come and look at it. Bringing traffic to your website generally means that you need to incorporate a Search Engine Optimization plan. This is the plan you follow that will optimize your content with keywords, whilst maintaining your overall appeal to customers. It will also involve developing those crucial links that will bring the web crawlers to your site, and thereby give your pages an index and page ranking on the major search engine sites. There are two paths you can follow to establish links to your site, via directories that will have links to related sites or by finding the links yourself.
Firstly, lets take a look at web directories. Web directories are sites such as the Open Directory Project, LookSmart, and Yahoo, which contain lists or directories of other sites, sorted by category. When you go into this site you will be able to find sites that are potentially able to link to yours.
The second option is to simply go to the search engine that you want to be listed on and start searching. You can locate online directories as well as find out here where your competitors are listed. You may even find that you can be linked to the same pages as them. Put in the keywords for your particular page search and then find other pages that relate to yours. There are different possibilities that will arise from each of these options, and it may be worth trying both for a while.
Once you have started to establish sites that you can link with, the next step is to create a links or resources page on your website. Here you can post links to the sites you would like to be connected with. When you have done this then you will look to have them establish links to your site. The easiest way to do this is to simply contact them and indicate that you have added a link to their site, and would they do the same for you. There is mutual benefit in establishing links, and website administrators will know this. The more quality links you can establish the more hits your site will get and of course your site will climb higher on the page rankings of the search engines.
Another great tip to building links can be to link your site via articles placed in article directories. This is a simple process, whereby you create an article that is relevant to your product or expertise. You then place this article with a link to your site in one of the many article directories on the net. For example, if you are selling car parts then an article posted about car maintenance with a link to your site can be another effective way of establishing links to your web pages. Again, you should look at the fact that the more links you establish, the more likely the search engines are to find you and the higher you will start to climb in the page rankings.
A good tip if you want to guarantee the quality of links into your site is to work with a pay per click site. These sites will place ads or banners that link your site on other relevant sites. This helps ensure that you receive the kind of traffic that is specifically interested in what you are selling. It can also see you get the benefit of having your link placed in a prominent page, with a guaranteed flow thru rate. The benefits of this option must be weighed against the cost, and how much you are initially wanting to outlay to establish your website.
Lastly, you could look at establishing links using a web linking tool, and this can be done also in conjunction with the other tips suggested. One final note, if you are trying to establish web links, remember that quality can be as important as quantity; whatever you do dont be tempted to use link farms. These are viewed poorly by the search engines and are considered to be the same as spamming. Take the time to do the research and establish quality links to your site. You will be well rewarded for your effort!

4 Terrific Tips for Getting Better Links From Other Web Sites

Basically, if your website is any good, you will have other webmasters submitting requests to you asking if you will link to their website in exchange for a link back to your site from their site. That is a reciprocal link. We then have to ask ourselves if this is a good idea or not? You have control over your website thankfully, and you can make commercial decisions as to whether a link exchange benefits you. Here are some pointers to consider if a link to your site is worthy of reciprocating.
1. Does The Other Site Have Any Relevance To Your Site?
There are different schools of thought regarding how important relevance is when accepting link requests. I have seen evidence to suggest that it is not critical and that you will benefit from links from most sites. Whilst common sense suggests that a link from a site with a similar theme to yours is likely to bring in link minded visitors, probably the best advice I have had is that which suggested putting yourself in the mind of your visitors. If you feel that the link you are proposing would be of interest to your visitors, then it is probably a good link to have.
2. How Many Links Should You Have On A Page?
Before you agree to a link from a third party site, you should ask for the exact location where the link will be held, and you should take the time to examine it. The first think you should check for (apart from the fact that the site is working) is how many links there are on that page. If there are hundreds of links on a page, and assuming that the page does not carry any page rank, then you could be wasting your time. If the page carries rank then having your link on the page could be worthwhile, but to be honest, any more than around 75 links and you should probably not bother.
3. Check The Site’s Page Rank On Google
Google applies a mystical formula to websites, and gives them a score called Page Rank. You can use page rank to help you assess the quality of a page. Or at least, PR gives you some idea of how Google views the site. You can see a site’s PR by installing the Google toolbar. Remember that PR is a gauge of how Google sees a site. The other big search engines do work independently of PR.
4. Is A Site Better If The Links Are Categorized?
If links are organised properly, it does give you an idea of the type of people behind the site. A slapdash site may well be indicative of slapdash owners, and that might be something that you should be wary of. By the same token, try and organise your links as well. They will appear more attractive to the search engines if there is a theme to the links, as well as more attractive to prospective link partners.
What you should have now is some ideas of a link building strategy that allows you to make good decisions based on sound principles, and now you should be better placed to make those decisions.

Among the many free tools that we have available to us are blogs and new social networking media. Nowadays, we can join social media web sites, like Twitter and Facebook. These are great places for locating new leads. We can network. We can connect with other people. We can invite them to view our content online. We can promote our information products through viral networking—the Internet version of word of mouth. And all of this is free, too! Big affiliate marketers will sell your products for you, and you simply pay them a percentage of whatever it is that they sell. That means you are only paying for results. As you can see, there are so many great tools and models to choose from. Choosing a domain name is a very critical part of your website marketing strategy.
By choosing a domain name that targets the specific keywords for your website you’ll flood your website with laser targeted traffic by enhancing click through response.
Pick a domain name that gives your prospects what they most desperately desire. By including the keywords in your domain name that are your customers desires, including them in your marketing messages and your website content you can’t help but flood traffic to your website!
Wondering what your customer’s desires are? If so, you’ll need to determine what your really selling. Let’s look at an example product here: home security alarm system.
Keep in mind few people know, nor do they care what the heck the product looks like or the features of the product such as size, color, weight, speed, or availability. The only thing they have an interest in is the “results” your product will achieve for them. It all boils down to what’s-in-it-for-me?
Why would a prospect purchase a home alarm system? What’s-in-it-for-them? If you think for just a moment you’ll come up with the right answer.
Yes, it’s to protect their jewelry or valuables while they are at work or when the house is empty.
You must stop thinking of yourself or the features of your product to determine what your customer’s deepest desires are. By turning your product or service features into “benefits” or “results” you’ll be able to hit their hot buttons and flood traffic to your website in the process.
The easiest way to turn features into benefits is to list all the features of your product or service on a piece of paper first. (a feature is a characteristic of a thing: size, color, weight, speed, availability) Then one by one turn each feature into a benefit for your customer. What’s-in-it-for-me– save money? youthfulness? friends? security? money? power? luxury? prestige? thinner body? obedient pet?
The traffic driving potential of keyword targeted domain names is awesome, provided that you research your target market and satisfy their “true” needs, desires and benefits. Once you have established this system for marketing, you’ll be able to use your domain name to construct specific ad campaigns targeted to specific markets even if your website offers multiple products and services.
To take it a step further, you could formulate a domain name that works like a headline for a classified ad. When you break a headline down it should have several different parts. It should fan the flames of desire with a hint of information about solving a specific problem, satisfying a need, providing a benefit, or invoking curiosity with a call to action. Your domain name should contain as many of these “headline characteristics” as possible. Try and phrase the keywords into something relatively short, catchy and easy to remember.
Keep in mind “what’s-in-it-for-me?” as to “what your really selling”. The job of your domain name is to act like a headline to drive targeted traffic to your website by “scratching the itch of your customers.” If you’ve found the right words to scratch that itch, then ONLY YOU can put it to use in your domain name. You’ll find that not only will you do better on your search engine rankings you’ll also attract a lot more attention with your pay per click ads or any type of advertising you use.

5. News and special offers in your Blog: Another way that searchers make their mind up about a website is to see if there are any signs of life in terms of recent news. If it is clear from a blog that features recent content that there are people actively working on the website it is a great confidence inspiring measure. Another advantage of a blog is that it allows you to feature time related special offers (for example 50% off if you book before the end of this month). Do you have a website? Did you think when you built it you would have visitors? Was it a “if you build it they will come” mentality? You are probably feeling pretty disappointed right now if that’s how you started.
Traffic does not just come because you built a website. It takes some consistent, daily effort to drive traffic to your site.
Here are 4 technique that if used consistently will increase your traffic level.
Blog Comments
The blogosphere is a social place. Great blogs are basically communities in and of themselves. Going to other blogs in your niche and getting involved in the conversation by contributing valuable information will get you some visitors.
This technique when done correctly will also get you good backlinks. You can leave your keyword in the name field of the comment form. This will give you an keyword anchor text link in the comment you leave.
Not all blog owners allow this so get to know the community before you leave keyword comments,and make sure you are leaving a valuable comment.
Link to other blogs from your blog
Every blogger loves to see they are being linked to. Each time you link to another blogger’s post it will send them a little message that someone has referenced them. This is called a trackback.
Many bloggers will follow the trackback link to check out the blog of people who are mentioning them. If they like your blog they may even mention you in a blog post. This can lead to decent traffic especially if it’s a well known blogger.
Most bloggers also publish the trackbacks in their comment section. This will give you another link on that blog, and other readers may follow the link to your site.
Notify Your Opt-In List
You don’t have an opt in list? You should. An opt in list is a list of people who have given you permission to contact them via email.
This list is vital to the ongoing success of a blog to make money. Most people will not purchase from your blog the first time they see an offer. This gives you the opportunity to put yourself in front of that customer over and over again.
So once you have your opt in list going, and you auto responder up and running go ahead and send a message to your list each time you post a new blog post. Many good autoresponders have a feature that will do this for you. All you have to do is check the correct box and add in the RSS link.
Use Your Email Signature
This is a great way to spread the reach of your blog. A signature file is a small bit of text and a link to something that goes out with each and every email you send.
You can have a quick tag line and a link to your blog in your signature. It might be good to ask a question or write a thought provoking statement that will pique the curiosity of the reader to click your link.
As you can see there are tons of ways you can drive traffic to your site. Having so many options is great because it allows you to find strategies you enjoy and can stick with.
It will be through consistent daily action your blog traffic will increase. Find a few traffic driving techniques and stick with them. You will see your traffic improve as time goes on.
