Ten Tips to Help your Web Site Rank Better in Google

Over 80 percent of Internet users use Google to find products and services on the world wide web. It stands to reason that if you want to generate more qualified sales leads you need to rank on the first or second page within the search engines results pages on Google.
As Google gets more and more sophisticated with each algorithm update, search engine optimisation methods have to change to keep getting good results.
Here is a list of ten important tactics that you can use to improve your Google rankings.
Sign up for Google Adwords Although Google will deny it, anecdotal evidence suggests that Goggle favors Adwords customers over non-Adwords customers. This is true for new web sites that often take months to get spidered and indexed by Google. I have seen brand new sites get spidered, indexed and listed in the search engine results pages in as little as a week.
It doesn’t have to cost a lot either. You can set up a low budget campaign of 50 cents to one dollar a day and still get favorable treatment.
Use the right keyword phrase The most important factor in getting quality web traffic is to
optimize your web pages for the correct keyword phrase. Getting the most sales is often a balance between search volume for key words and level of competition. Use the Overture keyword tool and Google Adwords tool to research and identify your best keyword phrases. Look for keyword phrases that have high search volume, but low competition. It also pays to see what key words your successful competitors are optimising for.
Put your key word phrase in your title tag Forget about putting your company name in the title tag (unless it is a valuable part of the key words), it’s a waste of words and will not help you rank in the search engines. The first three of four words in your title tag should be the key word phrase you are trying to optimize for. Try to limit your total character count to 60 characters.
Write an attractive page description tag Title tags are for search engines, description tags are for people. Spend time researching and writing a description tag that compels the reader to click on your listing. Come up with a great offer, use action words. Use shock and awe. Use anything that will get them to click.
Use H1 tags An often neglected search engine optimisation technique is to put your keyword phrase in H1 tags on your page. This tells Google that the following text is about your keyword phrase. Google weights H1 tags nearly as highly as title tags. This tip alone can drastically improve your Google. Similarly, the use of bold and strong html tags can emphasize a key word phrase within the paragraph text where it may not be appropriate to use H1 or H2 tags.
Get the right keyword ratio Aim for a keyword density of around 3-5% of the page contents. Try to work your key word phrase into the page so that it reads naturally. This may take some research and analysis of successful web sites. Remember to use headings and sub-headings that include your key words.
Use alt tags and description tags on images Key words used image file names, alt tags and description tags add to the key word density of any web page. They doesn’t make a huge difference, but every little bit helps. In some product classes a Google image search may lead web surfers to your web site.
Get quality one-way incoming links through article marketing and directory submissions As far as Google is concerned; link exchanges are just about dead. They can help to get your web site spidered and indexed more quickly, but these days they add very little in terms of Google search engine rankings unless the link is on a trusted site and that site has excellent page rank. Wikipedia and DMOZ are examples of such trusted sites.
A more effective approach is to write interesting and informative articles and submit them to article directories. Make sure that you use the author bio/resource box to maximum advantage by using your key word phrase in the link anchor text, AND, by pointing the anchor text to the correct page. Your home page may not be the best choice of pages for your selected key phrase. This will also ensure that more pages than just your home page gets indexed.
Use Social book marking If you have something newsworthy, humorous, quirky, unique or shocking to say, submit a link to your web page to sites like digg.com or redit.com. These up and coming web 2.0 power houses can create a buzz overnight driving thousands of interested visitors to your web site.
Note, just because you build it doesn’t mean they will come. If it’s boring link it will quickly get buried by newer and more interesting stories. But what the hell, it’s free to submit links to these sites and you never know your luck.
Record a podcast Google loves podcasts … it just loves them. Get yourself a decent microphone and some podcasting software like Audacity and go for it. Once you have an interesting and tightly edited podcast, put it on your web site and submit it to all the major podcasting directories like iTunes and Podomatic.

We have been hearing from everybody about link building and what is the most effective link building services out their but what does Google have to say about all of this. Well finally Google speaks up.
Google’s Maile Ohye is telling everybody what most SEO experts have been telling us for years. If you want your website to get on the first page of Google’s search engines then you need lots of unique content and inbounds links. As you can see unique content is first then link building comes second. So what kind of link building services will help you get the top spot? Lets see.
Google has just admitted that they do not like spammy links. Spammy links are one way link building services that charge a fee to add lots of links that link back to your site all at once. Google wants your links to be more merit based. Your link building should grow slowly and gradually from websites or blogs that are related to your site’s content. This is the most effective link building their is. This will make Google feel like you earned that link because of your content and not because you simply paid for one.
So first start a blog that closely fits your website and create a one way link to your website. Make sure you ping your blog to other sites so they will pick up your content. Also add comments from other blogs with a link back to your site. Just make sure your comment is related to the blog or you are thanking the other member for their site and then add a link to your site.
Creating a video is an effective one way link building service that anybody can do these days. Just record yourself or generate a video content feed talking about you website and include a one way link in your video and on the information chart on the side. Videos will usually get better placement on search engines than just word content. If you send your video to as many video sites as you can you are sure to get a page one ranking for your keyword in no time.
The best one way link you can get will come from websites with a high PR or “Page Rank” with a rating of 4 or higher. Google will keep your link up much longer when it comes from another website that is really well known. There are other link building services that can teach you how to get those link building skills.
So now you have it. That’s all that Google is looking for when it decides to put a certain website on the top page. With good unique content and merit based link building services you can achieve your goal of getting on that top spot on search engines.

Later this year, Google may begin offering pay-per-view movies via online video site YouTube. This will include new releases, possibly offered at per film. YouTube already offers some older titles for a rental fee of .99 to , but their catalog is limited. Google is currently talking with various movie studios, such as Lions Gate, Sony, MGM, and Warner Bros. about including their titles in the YouTube catalog. New titles will possibly be offered the same day they are released on DVD.
It’s also speculated that this service will be integrated with upcoming Google TV. Google TV will give television the navigation capabilities of the web. This will benefit viewers and advertisers alike. Viewers can navigate TV to more easily find the programs and channels they want to watch. And advertisers can include links in their commercials to take interested viewer to the company’s website, which will allow for more effective internet marketing.
Both the pay-per-view service and Google TV are speculated to launch around the same time. They can be integrated in the way that those with the Google TV service can watch pay-per-view films on YouTube right through their televisions. This will provide a more comfortable viewing experience than sitting at a computer desk or watching a film on a small laptop screen.
With the decline of video stores like Blockbuster, streaming movies over the Internet is where the future of video rental lies. After all, you don’t have to leave your house to get the movies, there are no late fees, and you don’t have to worry about getting a DVD that is scratched and won’t play or skips constantly. Netflix, iTunes, and Hulu already offer such services. Will Google offer a worthy competitor? Or will this service flop like so many of Google’s other recent endeavors, such as Google Buzz or Google Wave?
Google is counting on the popularity of YouTube to make their pay-per-view service a success. Currently, YouTube is one of the most popular sites on the web, with approximately 100 million visitors every month, and an outstanding Alexa rating of 3 worldwide. This high traffic website already has a huge audience that will be aware of this new service when it launches.
However, it is possible that part of the popularity of YouTube is the ability to watch a bunch of short videos for free. Many people visit YouTube to see the latest viral video, watch that funny commercial they keep hearing about (Old Spice Guy?), or watch music videos from their favorite artist when the have a little bit of time to kill. Will the YouTube audience be drawn to visit the site to pay to watch full-length movies? Or is the plethora of user generated content and short videos the main draw?
Another factor that might hamper success is that Google may be a bit late to the party. Netflix has already implemented an instant viewing service that allows members to watch films instantly over the Internet and video game consoles like the Nintendo Wii. Other services like Hulu, iTunes, and Amazon Video on Demand are also gaining popularity as sites for viewing films and TV shows. Will the already large YouTube audience be enough to propel Google’s pay-per-view service over its competitors? What will Google offer that its competitors won’t?
It’s obvious that Google is trying very hard to stay on top of the search engine and Internet realm. The Web giant already has plans for a social network that is said to possibly rival Facebook, which will prove to be a daunting task. However, Google is willing to take on the challenge of starting its own online social networking site, and has already acquired companies involved in social media services. Only the future will tell if Google will stay on top, or finally crumble.

Later this year, Google may begin offering pay-per-view movies via online video site YouTube. This will include new releases, possibly offered at per film. YouTube already offers some older titles for a rental fee of .99 to , but their catalog is limited. Google is currently talking with various movie studios, such as Lions Gate, Sony, MGM, and Warner Bros. about including their titles in the YouTube catalog. New titles will possibly be offered the same day they are released on DVD.
It’s also speculated that this service will be integrated with upcoming Google TV. Many people visit YouTube to see the latest viral video, watch that funny commercial they keep hearing about (Old Spice Guy?), or watch music videos from their favorite artist when the have a little bit of time to kill. Will the YouTube audience be drawn to visit the site to pay to watch full-length movies? Or is the plethora of user generated content and short videos the main draw?
Another factor that might hamper success is that Google may be a bit late to the party. Netflix has already implemented an instant viewing service that allows members to watch films instantly over the Internet and video game consoles like the Nintendo Wii. Other services like Hulu, iTunes, and Amazon Video on Demand are also gaining popularity as sites for viewing films and TV shows. Will the already large YouTube audience be enough to propel Google’s pay-per-view service over its competitors? What will Google offer that its competitors won’t?
It’s obvious that Google is trying very hard to stay on top of the search engine and Internet realm. The Web giant already has plans for a social network that is said to possibly rival Facebook, which will prove to be a daunting task. However, Google is willing to take on the challenge of starting its own online social networking site, and has already acquired companies involved in social media services. Only the future will tell if Google will stay on top, or finally crumble.

Two big things have just happened in Google-land: Jagger and Google Analytics. Together, these two events may have changed the face of search forever.

First, let’s discuss Jagger… Just like hurricanes, Google updates have names. (A Google update is a change to the way Google determines its rankings. Google makes these changes periodically, and they’re universally feared because they can impact dramatically on a website’s ranking.) The latest update is called Jagger, and it has search engine optimizers (SEOs) all around the world in a state of panic.
Why was Jagger such a fearful update? Simple… With Jagger, Google once again outsmarted huge numbers of SEOs. You see, many/most SEOs spend their time (and their clients’ money) trying to trick Google into thinking that their websites are more relevant and important than they really are. They do this mostly by swapping links, buying cheap links, and placing links on free directories. While there’s nothing wrong with these sorts of links (i.e. they’re not considered ‘black-hat’), they don’t really show that the site is relevant or important. All they really show is that the site owner has made a deal with another site owner. In these deals, the incentive for the linking site owner is a reciprocal link, money, or increased link volume. Google much prefers it when the linking site adds the link simply to enhance the value of their content or to increase their own credibility and authority.
In other words, Google wants its search results to contain relevant, important sites, not sites that merely appear to be relevant and important. To this end, Google invests millions of dollars and employs the world’s smartest mathematicians to create algorithms which identify sites that are trying to trick them. And that’s exactly what Jagger did; and when it found those sites, it simply adjusted their ranking to more accurately reflect their true importance. (Unfortunately, it also demoted some sites which actually deserve a high ranking. It is hoped that these mistakes will be ironed out with future minor updates, but that’s a topic for another article…)

Are you looking for ways to increase traffic, increase your Google PageRank and decrease your Alexa Ranking? Listed below are 23 steps that will help you achieve this goal.
1. Content – It is all about the 3 C’s – Consistent, Current, Content. Post at least 5 entries a week, if you consistently post information it also attracts new visitors and subscribers.
2. Press Releases – Send out a press release announcing the launch of your site. Any newsworthy item should also be considered for a press release. We recommend a site like PRLog.org, a free press release website. Occasionally, Google News will pick up a press release off this site if it is gaining interest after posting.
3. Facebook – Are you on Facebook? If so, you can set up an account for your site or create a fan page. Then invite your friends to join. You can tie in your RSS feed (new entries) so anyone visiting will see current information. When someone becomes a fan or friend you will reach their friends and gain more followers.
4. Twitter – We have seen lots of success with people that have used Twitter to network their site. Once you learn how Twitter works and the etiquette of networking you should find some success. The “tweets” you come across can inspire articles and form relationships. These relationships you build can result in posts to your site and a “guest” appearance. Your guest can provide information from an expert in the field and be a benefit to your readers.
5. Blog Catalogs – Sign up for Blog Catalogues, it just so happens that a popular one is actually called BlogCatalog.com. This can get your name out there and introduce you to other sites that you will find helpful.
6. Article Marketing – Many of your entries will make good topics for an article. You can edit your post to appeal to a larger audience and post it on that site. If you post good content it will result in views to your article and then clicks to your site.
7. Subscriptions – Provide your readers with an email subscription service for those that don’t want to miss the most recent articles. You can sign up with a service, such as Feedburner, and have it set up to automatically check once a day for new content and send it out.
8. Email blast – Email all of your contacts to introduce them to your site. Let them know what beneficial information you provide. Ask them to visit your site and subscribe to your email updates and register. Ask for feedback, do they like the layout, the look and ask them to critique to help you improve your site. Then ask them to help you pass the word and email their contacts.
9. Social Bookmarks – Tag your best posts at sites like Digg, StumbleUpon and Technorati. Every time you have a tag out there, it is one more inbound link. Links to your site will improve your rating.
10. Trading links – Network with others that provide similar information and add a link to their site and ask them to link to you. You can also introduce them to your readers as someone you follow.
11. Alexa Widget – Add an Alexa widget to your site that shows your ranking. When you have this widget on your site it also improves your own Alexa ranking.
12. Default Home Page – Ask friends and family if they will add your site as their default home page on their computer. Every time they open their browser, it is one more hit on your site.
13. Forums – Find a few forums related to your site and post questions and answers. Add value to that community. Set up a signature page that you can use to sign out that includes your website.
14. Interlinking – As you add content to your site, link to other articles that you have already written that are similar. This allows people to find more articles on that subject that are on your site. Sometimes a visitor to your site may not find what they are looking for in the article they are reading, but the information may be in a related article and this leads them there. The longer a visitor stays on your site the better chance you have for them to subscribe or return to your site.
15. Site Map – Put together a site map and submitted it to Google, Yahoo and MSN. This site map includes all the blog entries as a separate page. The more pages you have on your site the more content you are providing which increases your standings.

Some SEO specialist have already noted that the number of backlinks their websites are being credited have increased significantly. The connection with the Caffeine Update and the amount of backlinks website owners are seeing may coincide.
Recently Google has rewritten their systems to provide faster and more efficient indexing. The end results, a cache that is more up to date. As a website owner you may have already noticed faster insertions of new pages into the google index. You may also be noticing a faster index of your brand new url. The Caffeine System is based upon the want of real-time search results. It breaks apart the web into smaller sections, or hubs from which an entire network of internet content is connected. The Google Caffeine System is already in place and the index is changing fast. The change coincides with other recent changes including Google Places, the May-Day Update and the Bing Real-Time search.
Search Engines have grown in popularity for news, blogs and video. Without adjusting current off-page ranking factors, Google will be providing access to more real-time data. On-page factors for the Caffeine update point to targeted links to interior pages with original and targeted content. Authority of the website will decide how often Google crawls, indexes and updates the site. CNN and other authority news sites are already spidered more often because they publish original news stories, deliver fresh content, attract backlinks and traffic. The authority sites will be able to publish news stories and deliver this content to Google’s index faster.

There are only 2 things that will affect your position in the google search engines so that you can get a residual income. They are good content and incoming links. But which should you concentrate on and which is the most important as it is not 50-50.
Now, think about it, if you have rubbish content, would you get people to link to you? Unlikely. That is the view that Google takes, so they put 70% of the importance on incoming links and 30% on content.
So, you could spend all your time playing with META tags and keywords and even if you are the best, you could only get up to 30% of what could be achieved. So, if you knew how to get good incoming links and only had a mediocre site you would beat the competition hands down.
Of course, if you are trying to achieve a residual income your site would have to be good enough to convert the visitors you receive.
This article isn’t long enough to make you an expert but there are a couple of things you should know which I don’t see mentioned very often, if you are already good at getting inbound links just understanding this could push you to the top and if you have just started out this will give you a fantastic push up to get your residual income.
You must get your Anchor Text correct.
Do you know what anchor text is? It is the clickable word or phrase that take the visitor to another site; you will have seen it many times.
Now, understandably, Google will assume that if you have bothered to make text clickable it is important. So you must think very carefully about what to use as anchor text. And why you are doing it. I have seen this experiment mentioned many times but in case you haven’t just try it.
Go to Google and type in “click here” What comes up? Adobe (I hope). Now why do you think that is? I doubt if you see “click here” on Adobe Meta tags or repeated in their text, do you? No, it’s because thousands of other WebPages have put “click here” as anchor text, to take you to their site to download their free Adobe reader. If you looked you would have seen that there were about 1,550,000,000 results, which makes it even more amazing.
You must get your Anchor text consistent
It took me a while to realise that Google can see your site in three different ways.
So, and this is important, decide which you are going to use and stick to it. If you don’t you could be diluting your efforts by up to 66%. It is better to have 90 links going to the same URL then three different URL’s that all lead to the same place. This is a short section but the most important if you want to make a big difference to your efforts with very little work.
PageRank and Page Rank
What is the difference between pagerank and page rank? The single word “PageRank” is a trademarked name that google owns. PageRank is a unit of measurement that google uses to decide the value of a Webpage in their eyes.
On the other hand the words “page rank” it usually means how it is positioned on a search engine for a given keyword.
So how does it work? PageRank is numbered from 1-6 with 6 being the highest and let me know if you ever achieve it and I’ll buy you a pint.
Mind you, if you do, your residual income will be so good you can buy me one. 0 is where you will be for a while and where you will stay if you don’t do anything and your site has little content and never changes. So what does this mean?
Well if you want your site to be perceived as important by google you want to have links from sites which google already thinks are important, i.e. they have a high PageRank. Anything from 2 up is fine but the higher the better. Even a link from a 0 will still help a bit.
So the higher you can get your page rank the more they see you as an Authority on a subject and the closer you will be to getting your residual income.
To find out what the PageRank of a site is is fairly easy, you can download the google toolbar and it will show the Page Rank for every page you are on.
Get the best training
I have assumed in this short article that you are familiar with getting your links on to the many sites available, like article sites, blogs, book marking sites etc. correctly. If you are not sure though you need to get good training as it can take years of trial and error to get it right.
