Is Internet Marketing and Working at Home the Answer to Layoffs? 7 Questions Answered

More Layoffs Ahead
Just this week, it was announced another huge layoff is about to occur at one of the nation’s largest companies. With friends and family members who work there, I must admit to some concern, even though it will not personally affect me. Since May of last year, I have been working part-time to keep the wolf at bay, while building an online business in Internet marketing. Because of this, some of my family and friends have turned to me for advice, so I am going to answer some of their questions here.
Question 1: How easy is it to get started?
Getting started is easy–making it work is, well, work. At this point, I do not make enough to take the place of a full-time job, though I am beginning to see some small successes. When I started this, I knew it was not a get-rich-quick income, but then I don’t really need to be rich, just make enough to pay my bills and pay back student loans. What I have learned in the process is that, though a few do make it work quickly, the majority of people trying to make a living in Internet marketing struggle for a long time, months or sometimes even years, before “making it.”
Question 2: Should I do Internet marketing?
It depends. Are you willing to work at something else, assuming you can find the work, until your marketing efforts pay off? Are you willing to spend hours, days, or even months working through the learning curve? There is a huge learning curve due to having to learn marketing techniques, Internet marketing specifically, keyword identification, copywriting, some technical skills, who you can trust to give you correct information, and much more. Many people are successful Internet marketers, but all they sell is information on how to be successful Internet marketers. They are hard to identify, but most of the time, the content they sell is rehashed material that 1) either no longer works, or 2) has already saturated the market and it is difficult to make money using their techniques–note I said difficult, not impossible. If you have no job and no prospects, you should get started on Internet marketing as soon as possible, and put at least 12 hours a day into it. This will be the best way to succeed, but it won’t be quick. You need to have another source of income while you get this going.
Question 3: How can I shorten the learning curve?
Find a reputable organization and sign up with them. There are a few, though they are not easy to locate. It took months for me to sift through the chaff to find the grain, so to speak. While this will not remove the learning curve, it will allow you to learn from someone who actually walks the talk and can give you specific, concrete information. Once you find this entity, read everything three times. Then on the fourth read, start following the steps they suggest. By reading everything three times, first, you are building a solid foundation to understanding what they are asking you to do. If you cannot commit to reading everything three times, work through the steps during the first read, but be sure you go back and read it again. There is so much content to absorb, it cannot happen overnight, or even in the first week. I am still learning, and much of it is just now starting to make sense.
Question 4: Do I have to know how to build a Web site?
No, you are not required to know how to build Web sites, though some knowledge or experience with XHTML and CSS is helpful. Some organizations provide free Web site software that helps you build a site, even without technical knowledge. The issue is that if something gets broken, without the XHTML and CSS skills, you may have to ask someone else for help. FrontPage, Dreamweaver, and other Web design software can also be used, but I highly recommend that you do not use Microsoft Word. Word puts in a ton of excess garbage, and makes it difficult for even a Web design guru to find and fix errors. Some organizations offer free Web site templates to their members that give the option of developing a site by filling in the blanks. Be careful of these if you don’t understand Web design code. There may be some code built into it that does things you don’t know about, and could get you in trouble–for instance, Java or JavaScript code that captures and forwards information about your readers/customers to a third party you don’t know exists. Worst case, you can find someone to build your site for you. Costs for this service range from to 00 or more, depending on what you need coded. For a simple one page site, the range should be from to 0, depending on the skill and experience of the designer, as well as exactly what you need coded.
Question 5: Where can I find good information on how to do Internet marketing?
There are several resources available to you. Find and bookmark, or favorite, blogs about Internet marketing. Search for and bookmark forums about Internet marketing–lurk for a while, reading content provided as well as answers to questions newbies ask. Do they seem honest and straight forward or convoluted and confusing? Register with one or more forums after you choose those that seem most helpful to you. Spend hours reading everything in the forums, taking notes on those procedures that are interesting to you. Type up your notes to help solidify in your mind the information you have gleaned from the forums. Refer back to your notes often to be sure you are not missing a vital bit of information. Find an Internet training site, such as Wealthy Affiliate University, and sign up for membership and training. Click on the link at the bottom of the page to learn more.
Question 6: What is the most important thing for me to do?
Make a plan for each day and stick to it. Decide what you want out of Internet marketing, then plan how to get there. It has been said, plan your work and work your plan. This is especially true in Internet marketing. If you don’t plan, you will find yourself surfing the Internet looking for things to do, or doing busy work such as dusting your home office for the fourth time in two days, or reading emails. These are some of the ways to trick yourself into thinking you are actually working, when you are in fact spinning your wheels and getting no where. Keep moving forward, working your plan daily, and you will succeed in time.
Question 7: What equipment do I need?
You will need to have a computer and Internet access, or at least access to both through the local library or elsewhere. As far as equipment goes, that is all you have to have. You will need a text editor, but WordPad and Notepad, both of which came free with your personal computer, will work quite well. Spreadsheet software is helpful for keeping records, but not required. You can keep records in a spiral notebook, if you need to. A reference to XHTML coding is a good idea, but you can also look this information up on the Internet. Simply search for free XHTML HTML tutorials.
You must be persistent. How many cliches fit here? The early bird gets the worm;
Rome wasn’t built in a day; keep on trucking; press on; a stitch in time saves nine; if at first you don’t succeed, try, try again; keep your nose to the grindstone; never give up; and many more. These are cliches, because they are overused phrases. They are overused, because they are truisms. Search for, print out, and read daily Calvin Coolidge’s quote on persistence. Coolidge may not have been the best president in history, but he got this right.
To succeed as an Internet marketer, you will have to dive into the literature of the field and read deeply. You will have to be committed to the point that you will persevere when things do not work out the way you expected them to. You will have to learn who to turn to for advice, then pay attention. You will have to do it. Just do it! There is no substitution for rolling up your sleeves and getting to work–yes, I know, another cliche. Again, cliches are cliches because they are so obviously true and they work.

Blogging is an excellent way to develop a win-win relationship with your subscribers. A win-win relationship is one where all the parties involved are benefiting. The strategy of this type of blog is not to sell a specific product or service, but to develop relationships with the subscribers. The premise is that you provide valuable content to your readers and then once trust is established you may present products for sale to them.
Your blog must truly provide an outstanding resource for your target market. You could do a blog on sports, trivial, jokes or anything that you feel would be of interest to other people. The main reason to make a great blog is the independence of owning and being in charge of your marketing list. The majority of home based business opportunity work at home normally set you up with a replicated website and a generic auto responder system. The leads coming into your auto responder are not personally yours. The company may terminate your independent contractor at any time. You would be temporarily without that stream of income until you find another home based business opportunity work at home.
The home based business opportunity work at home company that you are working with may be very restrictive at times. Your rights to market the product or service may be taken away at any time. A self hosted blog with a subscription list is the best way to prevent your income from being interrupted. The majority of home based business opportunity work at home provides you with items that brand them. These tools are great for branding the company and do nothing for You Inc.
You may set up You Inc. very easily especially since the expenses required to set up your blog is minimal. You will need a domain name, hosting company and an auto responder. These costs are minimal in comparison to the value derived from owning your blog. Your blog is your real piece of real estate on the web. Your list is your only asset that is portable and the more your list grows the more valuable your asset becomes.
Attraction Marketing is based on the premise that if people trust you they would be more prone to business with you. Your blog is a passive way to convert subscribers to sales. The actual content of the blog must not be sale driven. The premise of the blog is to provide valuable content and if your blog becomes more sales oriented, then people might opt out of your list.

‘While it’s not the whole answer, meeting targets will be difficult if we continue to constrain supply unduly,’’ Barker, who has advised the Treasury on the issue, told the conference. “On housing supply, the scale of the problem is growing larger.”
House prices in the UK have tripled since 1997 and rose more than 10% last year. In a 226- page report issued last year Barker recommended to the Chancellor of the Exchequer that the government should ease building restrictions to help increase supply.
“There’s a clear divide between homeowners and others,” Barker said. “Land prices and house prices have risen to pretty uncompetitive levels. It would be understandable if it was just a London phenomenon, but it’s quite widespread.”
It looks like more building will be a priority for the next prime minister. Gordon Brown stated on May 13 that he will oversee the construction of five new environmentally friendly towns as one part of a plan to supply 200,000 new homes a year. Homebuilding dropped, on average, to 148,000 new units a year between 1989 and 2005, from a peak of 425,000 in 1968, government data show.
Barker still said she is “disappointed” about the government’s plans for incentives to encourage homebuilding. “The government has been more cautious when it comes to financial incentives,” she said. “There’s a serious risk that they’ll be less powerful.’’
A report title ‘The Best Laid Plans’ issued by the Policy Exchange research concluded that the current system makes it easy for local councils to avoid approving construction plans and proposed dramatic changes to the planning system.
One of the joint authors of the report, Dr Oliver Marc Hartwich, said. “It’s extremely unattractive
for local authorities to grant planning permissions because it costs lots of money and you run into problems with neighbours who don’t want new developments in their backyards. I don’t see the government getting incentives for planning permission right. They only talk about national targets.”

If you have used a search engine, you will notice that any particular keyword search will return thousands, if not millions of results. Most people will not bother to browse through all those results; they will prefer to look into the sites already displayed. Statistically speaking, the sites listed on the first results page will garner the highest amount of traffic, putting those sites in a better position to make money.
2. Joining internet directories. While internet directories are no longer as widely used as search engines, some people do use them. It is important that you do not overlook the potential customers that these directories can bring to your site. Affiliate marketing is nothing more than a Web site network. Let’s say you own an interior decorating business. Your Web site is dedicated to promoting your company and reaching out to potential customers. While your service is basically traveling to locations and performing consultations for redecorating rooms and businesses, you know that those who are interested in redecorating their homes are also into household accessories such as candles, curtains, antique furniture, etc. In this case, affiliate marketing for home internet business would involve contacting companies who sell these items, getting their permission to post links to their sites on your Web site, and collecting a percentage of profit for each purchase that company receives because someone clicked the link from your site to theirs and bought an item.
In turn, these companies will probably post a link to your Web site on their site. Someone who is browsing for discount furniture may see the link to your interior decorating business and decide to contact you for a consultation. Once the contract is signed between you and the client, the Web site that sent business your way will then collect a referral fee.
For affiliate marketing for home internet business, having a business yourself is not even really a requirement. If you are nuts about hair products, you can make a living selling hair products without having to take orders or stock products. That’s what I’m talking about. No stocking product in your garage, taking orders and everything else associated with a typical business.
How is this done? Create a content based web site dedicated to hair tips and hair trends. Include columns and articles all about hair that will attract other hair gurus to your site. Make sure your content is packed with great information. After your Web site is established, contact several online beauty product stores and set up affiliate marketing agreements. Most of this is already done in most cases. That’s if you get with net savvy companies.
Those who hit your site and/or become a regular visitor will inevitably be interested in ordering these products advertised on your site. Once that advertisement link is hit by your site visitor, and a purchase is made, you will then receive commission.
The key to having successful affiliate marketing for home Internet business is simply continuing to increase traffic to your site. The more hits on your site, the more chances you have of gaining profit from purchases made through links on your site. Promoting your Web site, writing articles that contain appropriate keywords and instituting a newsletter to subscribers would be promising ways to attract browsers to your Web site.
More traffic equals more profits. The more traffic you can drive to your site, the more successful your home Internet business will be. If a company sees that your Web site is regularly visited by hundreds of people daily, you won’t have a problem with getting other businesses wanting to partner with you. I know what you’re thinking! Drive traffic? How do I do that?
How to Increase Your Site Traffic and Succeed With Your Affiliate Marketing Programs
Are you ready to get to work? Well, let’s get to it then! As an affiliate, your main objective is to sell the products and services offered by your partner merchants. Unless you can do this, you can never hope to make a significant amount of money with affiliate marketing programs. Ok, that’s it! Just kidding. So how do you boost sales? All things being equal, you will need to increase your site traffic before you can experience more sales. By the law of averages, the more people are aware of the products you are offering, the more products you will sell. It’s just that simple folks, it’s a numbers game.
I bet you want a few tips that can help you boost your site traffic don’t you? Here you go:
1. Optimize you site for the search engines. The most successful sites on the internet are the most visible ones. Now there are various ways to achieve increased visibility on the internet, but the foremost method is that of search engine optimization. The details are too technical to discuss here, but the purpose of search engine optimization (SEO) is to help your site achieve higher rankings on the search engines. If you have used a search engine, you will notice that any particular keyword search will return thousands, if not millions of results. Most people will not bother to browse through all those results; they will prefer to look into the sites already displayed. Statistically speaking, the sites listed on the first results page will garner the highest amount of traffic, putting those sites in a better position to make money.
2. Joining internet directories. While internet directories are no longer as widely used as search engines, some people do use them. It is important that you do not overlook the potential customers that these directories can bring to your site. To join an internet directory, you will have to submit your site for approval, and you will be categorized accordingly.
3. Provide fresh content. Your site must continually be updated if you expect your visitors to keep coming back. Your site must have useful content, as well as tools that will help your target audience. Make your site as easy to navigate as possible, and be sure that your links work the way that they should. There is nothing that frustrates people more than a “broken” website, and once your site has been labeled as such, chances are slim that many people will want to come back.
4. Build an online community. In other words, build relationships with your potential customers. Make your visitors feel welcome and appreciated, and they are likely to come back. Be interested in solving their problems and they will thank you with their business.
Making your affiliate marketing program work is really not that much different from operating a traditional business. The only way you can keep your customers is to treat them right. The Japanese have a saying: The customer is God. As long as you treat your customers with respect and exert effort in trying to meet their needs, you will find that they will be more than willing to help you with yours.
Affiliate Marketing and Requesting Customer Support
As a webmaster, you are bound to run into problems. Even though you have spent a good amount of time learning the affiliate marketing trade, sooner or later you will run into some challenges that you will need help to resolve. Areas such as e-mail services, affiliate marketing software, and online services are often particularly troublesome.
Unfortunately, getting help is not often easy, even from your web host. But there are ways to make the process simpler for both sides. Here are some questions that you might consider before you call your service provider:
Who are you? Many people report their problems without providing their personal information, such as their username. Unless the support team knows who you are, how do you expect them to solve your problem?
What is the problem? Be specific. Identify which product or service is not working properly. Keep in mind that you are just one of your web host’s customers. Unless you can pinpoint the problem, chances are pretty slim that you will receive appropriate and timely help.
What software are you using? Your web host’s support team will need information on the software you are using. For instance, they will ask you what type of system you are using in your computer. It is a well-known fact that certain applications do not work well on certain systems. Be sure to give any relevant details about the services or applications that you use.
When did the problem start? Identifying the time you became aware of the problem is important. If you have recently made any changes to your system and the problem appeared soon after, it is quite likely that particular change is the cause. Don’t withhold information from the support team; every bit of knowledge is crucial to identifying the source of difficulty.
What have you tried to fix the problem? If you have attempted to fix the problem yourself, be sure to include an account of your attempts in your report. Letting the support team know what you’ve already done will help them save time, and also make a more accurate diagnosis of what’s wrong.
Have you kept it simple? For security purposes, some support systems do not allow HTML display. To avoid having your e-mail intercepted, it is best to send your messages in plain text format.
