Far and away, the most critical component of any online marketing campaign is going to be targeted keyword research. Proceeding without a clear idea of just what your audience is searching for is akin to setting out across the Pacific without any navigational aids. You need a map to help you get where you’re going in this endeavor, and performing a search for the keywords necessary for this journey is the starting point.
How Are We Going To Use These Keywords?
You’re going to be using the keywords for many purposes, including Web content creation, videos, tags, expert verbiage, niche markets, and more. That’s why you need to get more than a few. You may start with a few “seed” keywords to help you find the gems hiding underneath, but in the end you should end up with a list containing hundreds – if not thousands – of keywords. This will save you both time and money in the long run as you’ll have a clear idea what you need to focus on.
How to Spy On Your Competition!
Not only that, you also have tools at your disposal that will allow you to take a very accurate picture of your market and to understand exactly what you need to do to rank for certain keywords. It’s common practice to “reverse engineer” the sites ranking at or near the top of a keyword search result and accurately predict the amount of work, links, and other elements needed to unseat any of these sites form their perch.
Remember, we are competing for position, and these rankings are based primarily on SEO (search engine optimization) and inbound links to your site. There are other important factors, but if you can get these right to a large degree, you’ll win. Just know that a solid keyword plan is at the foundation of this!
Some of the best tools for uncovering the keywords your competitors are employing are SpyFu, QuantCast, Compete.com, and Market Samurai. Some are free, and others have free trials you can use. You can also glean a lot of information from the SEOQuake Plugin for FireFox. It returns a lot of useful info and is free.
However you manage it, doing some market research, along with your own keyword research, should return to you a list of many keyword terms you can use. You may not employ all of these right away unless you are using them for pay-per-click campaigns or other advertising. In fact, you will start optimizing your site or focus an article marketing strategy around many less, perhaps 12-15 to start, and then move on to the next batch to make it manageable.
Buyers! Not Browsers!
One of the most important aspects of doing your keyword research will be to use your head a bit and think about terms and modifiers that will be the type of terms that attract people late in the buying cycle and that they will typically type into the search box. Some of these include modifiers like “buy, purchase, shop, order, shipping, get, find, coupons, deal, best price, comparison, review.” These terms added to your basic keywords will return buyers, not browsers, and that’s what we’re after, right?
Finding less competitive terms in your market that you can rank for is a challenge you must take up. Going bat-blind into a market is a recipe for disaster. In part two, we’ll focus on the exact ways to come up with a wickedly successful keyword list without too much pain and suffering!

There are two sides to everything, a good side and a bad side. The same rule applies to SEO keyword research. Well, doing keyword research is one of the most important aspects of optimization, but it breaks down into two parts. The first part is SEO keyword research before you build a site; this is the research on which you will base your site upon. The other part is keyword research once your website gets some momentum and some traffic; this is where you decide if you are going for the first price or the ever comforting silver medal.
SEO Keyword Research Before You Buy the Domain
Conducting keyword research before you buy your domain name is very important, as having your most important keyword in the domain URL is a great ranking factor. So what do we look for here, we are not looking for a low competitive keyword that is for sure, but we are not looking for a single word either. Out goal is to find a two to three word phrase which has a search volume that is satisfying to our needs. This is the easy part, the hard part is getting a base of keywords to build your site on, and for that you will use your main keyword.
The main keyword can have numerous variations, but don’t just use Google Keyword Tool or paid keyword tools to find synonyms and LSI keywords, use Thesaurus as well, this is the greatest keyword tool ever invented. What you need to do is create a list of keywords for your website that you will later narrow on your categories. My suggestion is to create a list of at least 100 keywords with at least 1,000 exact searches per month. If you can find that much it will be no trouble to create the main keyword on which you will base your website.
SEO Keyword Research 6 Months Later
After the first 6 months it is time to evaluate your SEO efforts and tweak your SEO campaign. In order to do that you need to reevaluate your keywords and maybe even discover some new ones. There is no need to use keyword tools here, the only tool you will need for this is Google Webmaster Tool.
All of the info about search queries and the amount of traffic that each of them gets will be available for you in your webmaster tools. What you need to do is find the keywords that are getting you the most traffic and build links using those keywords. Also identify potential rankers, keywords that are bringing you traffic without you optimizing for them. These keywords are the gold mine of your SEO effort. You didn’t waste time in optimizing your website for them but yet you manage to get some traffic of them. With some work and a bit of inbound links you may be able to get a good rank and increase traffic from those keywords.
You will be able to identify which keywords to work on and you will also be able to find new keywords, all of that by using your own search history as your keyword research tool. After that you can repeat the SEO plan measurement and tweaking every 3 to 6 months and you can achieve success.

As you begin your search for new free internet marketing software and free keyword generator programs there are certain things that you must do to maximize your efforts. Remember that time is your most valuable commodity as an internet marketer and simply put we as marketers do not have time to waste looking at, reading about and testing new software programs that offer the following;
1.) Trial Use
2.) Limited Use
3.) Timed Use
4.) Demo Only
5.) Light Version
I’m sure that from time to time you will find a truly wonderful program that defies all of the odds, but let’s look at this from a practical point of view here. How much time was spent getting to the point where you found that software program? Was it really worth all the hassles? More often than not I’m sure that you’ll agree that it would be better if you could simply find a website that reviewed these so called “free internet marketing software programs” and “free keyword generators”. And of course finding such a site that also offered a blog or forum for viewer comments would be even better.
To prove this let’s do a brief study on free internet marketing software and high quality free keyword generators. For the sake of argument let’s run a search on Google for a “free keyword generator”.
Case Study #1:
Free Keyword List Generator by Stomper Net – My first thoughts were WOW another GREAT free or low cost promotional tool being offered by Stomper Net! Then I realized that I had to sign up for their email list AGAIN and register to use the tool. Once I’d jumped through these initial proverbial hoops I was shocked to find that I’d overlooked the fact that this software uses Word Tracker Keywords.
This means that my software would need to be upgraded to unlock it’s full potential, which of course would cost money. Worse than that I might need to sign up for the Word Tracker Keywords program and that means I could possibly end up paying for a monthly or annual subscription to their service.
* Before I offend anyone I do realize that Stomper Net and the Word Tracker Keyword program are both well respected staples in the internet marketing niche. However, in this case it is my goal to help people find completely FREE full version internet marketing software and keyword generator software that they can use to promote their products, services and affiliate programs with.
Case Study #2:
Good Keywords – At first site their website looks very well organized and professional. They offer free full version keyword research tools and keyword generator software that looks like it will do exactly what we’ve all be looking for. At one time this may have been a state of the art program back when Yahoo’s Overture worked reliably on a consistent basis.
The problem with this free internet marketing software group is that it is completely reliant on a program that is so over used that the mere traffic to the Yahoo Overture website alone bogs down their system so badly that you’re lucky if you can even get their website pages to load from one visit to the next.
* Also sadly in this internet marketer’s humble opinion the results that are pulled with the free Yahoo Overture tool has proven to be unreliable and unstable at best. Again, I don’t mean to offend anyone and I’m sure that at one time this was a GREAT program, but there are newer and better things.
Case Study #3:
Global Promoter – The first thing I noticed on their website was this;
“Please be patient. This may take up to 2 minutes because it compiles the results of 6 major search engines. Sometimes no results are returned even though there are queries performed on the keywords you typed in during the given month. If this occurs, just hit submit again until the correct results are returned.”
In theory this looks GREAT if they’re really using this free internet marketing software program, or in this case, free keyword generator software, to search on SIX major search engines! However, what I found next really bothered me.
“No Searches Done in March 2008 on the Overture network of search engines for your keyword.”
This only left me thinking that there I was again using a program that was completely reliant on Yahoo’s Overture, which again in my humble opinion was outdated, unreliable and inconsistent.
Case Study #4:
Google Adwords Free Keyword Generator Tool – With this free internet marketing software program I thought that I’d finally struck oil. After all no website is more revered, searched and used online for things of this nature than the mighty Google themselves! With that in mind I typed in my favorite set of keyword search terms;
“free internet marketing software”
Unfortunately the results that were returned consisted of 3 targeted keyword phrases and 11 other keyword phrases that had NOTHING to do with any form of internet marketing software.
Case Study #5:
Traffic Zap’s Free Keyword Generator – Let me cut this one short by telling you that when I tried to use it the first thing I got was a POP UP with something that looked mildly semi-pornographic. It then appeared to be processing for some time only to return an error message that once again leads back to problems that we’ve already discussed regarding the long list of free internet marketing software programs that rely on Yahoo’s Overture.
At this point we’ve researched ALL of the top 5 unique listings on Google for “free keyword generator” and we have yet to find a truly reliable free internet marketing software program that we can use to promote our products, services or affiliate marketing programs…..other than ones that we would most likely have to PAY to upgrade, such as the program by Stomper Net mentioned above.
Final Case Study:
Free Keyword Generator by IM Software 4 Free – This program checks for a list of popular keywords by searching on Google, Yahoo and MSN combined to come up with a more complete starting point for internet marketers to use. It also runs a search on these 3 major search engines to find out how many competitor posts show up for each of the chosen keywords.
While no free internet marketing software or free keyword generator is going to be perfect this tool is truly a GREAT program to use and best of all it’s completely FREE to download and use. There is no trial use, limited use, timed use, demo or light version that leads to a paid upgrade or leaves you out hanging in the wind to PAY if you want to use the software after a specific time frame.

Do you want the latest breaking news delivered right to your desktop in a timely manner? A new website, has just been released to deliver the latest news right to your desktop.
The news site has twenty five categories, allowing an individual to select news based on his own interest. All news categories come with its own news feed.
A news feed is a format that allows readers to pull content from the site. Whenever a news article has been published, the reader gets to see the headlines in an RSS reader immediately. He may then decide whether he wants to continue reading the rest of the news article.
Using the RSS (Really Simple Syndication) format, other related websites can also publish headlines on their sites without having to upload any information. The RSS URL is loaded into a script, which then displays the headlines in the user friendly HTML format. Using feeds, websites can pull and publish the latest breaking news from the original news site.
To ensure that publishers are able to publish relevant content, the news site has also incorporated a keyword based RSS feed. A keyword based feed allows the publisher to generate any feed based on keywords. For example, if a publisher wants to publish information on political issues, he may choose to use keywords such as “politics” or “public opinions”. When a keyword based feed is generated, only articles with those keywords in them will appear in the RSS feed.
The source of news comes from in-house writers, small and medium sized businesses, home business owners, as well as large organizations. When they issue press releases or publish articles on their companies and/or products and services, these articles appear on the news sites.
Readers can make full use of the information to help them spot business trends, keep up to date with the latest technology trends, and more.
The content is provided free of charge, and no registration is required to view the news releases. No fees are charged for accessing the content.
The content mainly consists of how to articles, general information articles, industry related articles, and press releases. Many articles also contain useful hints and tips on how to overcome specific problems. These articles are provided by industry experts, and they have some valuable advice that they want to share with the Internet community.
For instance, if you are looking for home improvement advice, you can easily find expert advice on this topic. You can find furniture recommendations, tips on how to maintain your flooring, redecorating advice, and so on.
To access the content, simply visit the website or subscribe to the RSS feed. You will need a web-based or desktop RSS feed reader to subscribe to the feed. To date, Google news reader and Yahoo news reader have been the most popular applications on the Internet. As long as the individual has an active user name, they can sign up for these services and start subscribing to feeds immediately.

Finding Great Keyword Phrases

Do you know how to identify a potentially good keyword phrase as opposed to a bad one? It’s not as difficult as you may believe. In it’s simplest form, a good keyword is one that will make you money. Some keywords may get you a lot of traffic but if that traffic fails to convert into money, its a waste of time!
There are a number of attributes I look at when assessing whether to target a particular keyword phrase or not. Lets have a look at those attributes now.
Profit Potential
What I mean by profit potential is the likelihood that someone searching on a particular keyword phrase will actually spend money based on the results they get. For example if someone use the word ‘free’ in their search phrase, it indicates they are not about to part with any cash, they are just looking for free information on the subject they are interested in. Whereas if they include the word ‘buy’ or even ‘review’ they are much more likely to be actively searching for something to buy. Also if their search phrase includes a specific product name or model number they are again more likely to be in a buying frame of mind. Therefore look for search phrases that are in the form of questions within these categories, an example would be the search phrase ‘how to catch a cheating partner”.
Try and put yourself in the mind of the searcher when evaluating potential search phrases. Think about what frame of mind the person is in. Are they in buying mode or research mode? Are they feeling emotional, vulnerable or desperate? A good indication of the profit potential of a keyword phrase is how much PPC advertisers are prepared to pay to advertise on the phrase. You can find this information for a phrase using Google’s free keyword tool. It shows you search volumes and PPC amounts. The higher the PPC figure, the more likely you will be able to make money from the keyword.
Traffic
Unless you are using software to automatically generate hundreds of web pages or blog posts, you want to identify keywords that get reasonable search volumes each month. By reasonable I mean 500 plus searches per month. I personally target keywords with a minimum of 2,000 monthly searches for my niche site homepages and 500 for other pages or posts. If you use content automation software that instantly generates hundreds or thousands of pages, you can obviously target keywords with very small monthly search figures, because 1,000 pages each getting 10 searches per month is nice traffic!
Competition The competition for a keyword is measured typically by how many other pages are competing or optimised for your targeted keyword phrase. Optimised pages are what you need to be interested in. Personally I look to see how many competing pages have my keyword included in their page title. This gives me a good indicator of what the real competition is for the term, as people have actually optimised their page to rank well. How competitive you can be will also depend on your ability to get inbound links to your pages. The higher you want to rank for your term, the more links you will need pointing in to your content.
So in summary, profit potential, search volumes and competition should be the attributes you use to choose your keyword phrases to optimise your sites around.

You will want to make sure that the website will be readable by human being and the search engine spider will find your website to be relevant. Avoid spamming your website with keyword and you will get better response and results.

* Negative Keywords – this is one of the better features that have been introduced. Negative keywords have always been important for any SEO or PPC initiative. It allows irrelevant words that are typically associated with your product, service, or offer to be disregarded. Just use the drop down menu to select the negative keywords of your choosing.
If you have a Google Adwords account, you can already access this tool by clicking on the “Keyword Tool” found under the Opportunities section.
This development will possibly make an impact in your SEO and PPC initiatives in the future by helping you target the right set of keyword groups.
