After proving that link exchanges really work to help search engine rankings, I was bombarded with requests asking about my successful method for getting reciprocal links. Instead of answering each person individually, I decided to put up an article that will help everyone who is strugling with getting responses to their link request emails.
And that’s the big problem with link exchange requests, isn’t it? They are often ignored. If you have the words “link exchange” or “reciprocal link” or anything like that in the email subject, the email will be unceromoniously deleted by 95% of webmasters. The other 5% probably aren’t worth trading links with.
Why is that? It’s because thousands of webmasters are using automated tools to crank out the link request emails, trying to get links to junk sites that have little real content and even less value. Because of this, webmasters have been conditioned to ignore link request emails.
First, Don’t Ask For Link: Pay A Compliment and Give a Link
I solved this problem by not asking for a link in my “link request” email. In fact, I don’t even mention a link at all!
Does it seem counter-intuative to not ask for a link request in my emails which are designed to get a link to my site? It probably does. But if you ask for a link, you’ll just get your email deleted, so you need to take an alternate route.
My subject line is usually something like:
“I’d love to add your site to my directory!”
Then, in the message body, I tell the webmaster what I like about their site and ask them to add their site to my directory. (Note: You should always pay the webmaster a personalized compliment so that they know your request wasn’t cranked out by a machine.)
Wouldn’t you be much more motivated to open up an email that says the person would love to add your site to their directory than to open one that says “Link exchange request” or something impersonal like that?
They Add Their Link To Your Directory, And Then …
Once the webmaster adds their link to your directory, only then do you ask for a link back. Once they’ve already been given a generous link by you, most often those same webmasters will return the favor. In fact, I generally see about a 70% reciprocal link rate.
For the other 30%, they are still a valuable addition to my directory, so I keep them in there, but I mark their links with the rel=”nofollow” attribute so I don’t lose any PageRank for a webmaster who won’t return the favor.
Do The Math
In the typical, unproductive scenario, you might send out 100 emails asking for a link back. You might get 10% to open the email at all, and of those who do only 20% actually swap links with you. That’s 100 emails times 10% who open, or 10 people who actually read the email. Of those 10, 20% swap links with you, so you end up with only 2 links. Ouch!
Using my method, I get a solid 50-60% who open the email, followed by 70% who swap links with me. So I end up with 100 times 50%, or 50 email readers, times 70%. So I end up with 35 links. That’s more than 17 times as productive as the clunky old method.
But it still takes work, which is why I recommend using SEO Elite to automate the process of finding and emailing potential link partners.

How to Choose Web Directories to Submit Your Links

Website owners should be aware that there is such as thing as quality back links, and non-desirable back links. The goal is not to get as many back links as possible. The search engines view such efforts as an attempt to manipulate the rankings, and will not hesitate to penalize such sites. So as a website owner, you need to know the difference.
A non-desirable back link is a link that appears spammy to the search engines. Any links that are listed on pages with nothing but links will risk being classified as a spammy link. These pages are created purely for adding links. Some people call them link farms. But whatever they are called, it doesn’t really matter. They are still pages created with little purpose except to try and manipulate the search engine rankings. At least that’s what the search engines are “thinking”.
To avoid being penalized, you have to be careful where your links come from. Of course, you have little control over external sites. If other people want to link to you, so be it, but try not to actively participate in link farms. These sites don’t even bother to organize the links!
The right way to build back links, is to get your links on established websites. What is an established website? The search engines usually rank such sites very well. These sites have a unique design, do not have irrelevant links on their pages, are not over cluttered with advertisements, and have useful content and/or applications on them. So for example, if site with a useful blog may also have a link directory, linking to relevant sites. You may want to submit your links to such quality sites if you come across them.
The better web directories have well organized links, and search engine friendly pages. That means the URLs look like static HTML pages instead of a long non-sensical query string. They should also have a site map so that the search engines can index the whole site properly, and the navigation must be easy for visitors to find and submit links.
Due to the large number of link submissions some of these web directories have, some have turned their directories to paid submissions. This is a better alternative for everyone because it reduces the number of spammy links. In this case, spammy links refer to links linking to sites that are under construction, not found, or showing some dubious content. With paid submissions turned on, the web directory owners now have more time to actually review all the links before approving them. That means if you submit your links to these directories, your links will be found alongside other quality sites as well. These are the web directories that are worth considering submitting your links to.

The problem with this is that customers can easily identify it as an affiliate link. It also makes your affiliate marketing more vulnerable to hackers and malicious people who can easily steal your commissions as well by replacing cookies. The best way to prevent customers or such malicious groups from identifying your URLs is to cloak them. There is free software available these days that can effectively help you cloak your links.
Affiliate link cloaking: how to go about it?
Customers tend to hesitate clicking on an affiliate link simply because they are tired of all those promotions. Then there are stealware and other malicious software that constantly keep track of affiliate links and try to steal commissions away from unsuspecting affiliate marketers. You can avail various software for free these days that can help you effectively cloak your links. You can use any of the following techniques to cloak your links:
1) Banner servers:
Banner servers are great because any advertisements that direct customers on these servers will have extremely long text links. This way, your customer will never be able to read the entire link to know it is actually an affiliate redirect. In this example, merchntxyz is your merchant advertising company – your unique affiliate link. The first portion of the URL contains your own affiliate link while the second portion of this URL shows what actually gets shown on the status bar of the browser. The end portion of the URL is the text link. Once a customer clicks on this link a new window loads so that you don’t end up losing your customer from your affiliate site.
4) Ultimate cloaking method:
One of the best and most fool-proof methods of performing cloaking on your affiliate links is to create a separate html file on your website, i.e. http://www.marketersdomain.com/greatprogram.html and paste the following HTML code into that website. Just replace that merchantxyz link with your own link to your affiliate program. This way your affiliate links will be cloaked and you won’t lose a single cent!

To submit directory links that will further optimise your search engine results, plan to submit directory links that go beyond your home page. Creating unique quality content will convince the directory editors that you have earned your rightful inclusion from your directory submission request into the proposed directory category. When you submit directory links, you are contributing to the wealth of your website. The wealth is in the backlinks. Each backlink from a directory submission enriches your website, particularly the page it is directed to. The page that receives the wealth reaps the benefits. With an eye for careful investing during your directory submissions, you can submit directory links from multiple pages of your website and build a healthy portfolio of your website for the search engines to review. Although many directory submission forms suggest to submit a URL from your home page, most directory submission forms make exceptions to that suggestion. Several directories allow you to submit a deep link from your website to their directory if there is relevant quality content. When you submit directory links from your home page and deeper pages, you further clarify the value of each page in your website, and this contributes to the search engines valuing your website as a whole. A deep linking ratio is not an absolute determinant in popularity or search engine placement. A corporate statement from a major search engine clearly states that there are literally over 500 million variables and 2 billion terms that are used when valuing a website. However, it has been proven that quality back links play a significant part in the valuation. When you submit directory links to your sub-pages, you are mastering more of those 500 million variables than your competitors. A submit directory link strategy that involves optimising your website’s sub-pages for quality back links from carefully planned directory submissions builds up your website’s portfolio for the search engines. A website with well-distributed back links from quality directory submissions and a healthy deep link ratio will grow to be a strong contender in the search engine result pages. Most people aren’t aware that outbound links can have a major impact on how well their site ranks with Google.
Coming to terms with how links works in regards to Google PageRank is very important and a much under-used strategy for gaining search engine dominance. Using bad linking can cause what is known as unnecessary PageRank bleed, which will result in links sending less PageRank to the pages you really want to send it to!
Sounds complicated? Let me explain this in simple terms.
We are going to use a hypothetical situation here, because no one outside of Google can be certain of exactly how Google uses Page Rank.
Let’s say your page has 100 points of PageRank value (PR) to spread around. If you have ten links on your page, you can pass ten points of PR to each page you’re linking to.
If you have about 100 links on the page, you can only pass one point to each link! Remember, internal links also pass PageRank, so you don’t want to bleed too much of your PR into your outbound links. You should conserve as much PR as possible to be passed on to your own internal pages, and to other sites you own.
Let’s for example say you are citing a few resources as references in an article you are going to be putting on your site. You might not want to pass any of your valuable PageRank to these sources, because this does nothing for you.
The only real exception would be if you were linking to an authority site with a good PageRank, because it’s theorized that linking out to quality sites also gives you credibility in the eyes of the search engines.
But if you’re linking to sites that aren’t of the highest quality, you can prevent the bleeding of PR to these pages by using the nofollow attribute on these outbound links. Using nofollow will cause most search engines to ignore that link as if it doesn’t exist at all.
If you use a web site builder you will often find powerful nofollow features that allow you to set the nofollow on an individual link basis, on a navigation menu level, or on a global level.
You may often be tempted to use the nofollow attribute on links that you send out to traffic trade partners, but this is deceptive and unfair. It is not a great idea to do this, because one of the main purposes of reciprocal linking is to gain backlinks.
If they’re linking to you properly, and you link to them with a nofollow tag, then they really aren’t getting any value from your link to them. If you’re trading links with other sites and you intend to use the nofollow tag on these links, it’s important to state this up front. Some sites won’t want to exchange links if you do this, so keep that in mind.
Something else worth paying attention to is where links appear on your page. If you want to be sure to pass along as much PR as possible to a certain link, you should make sure that link is not in a long list of links with no other text between them. Search engines see long lists of nothing but links as being a bit spammy, so they tend to weigh these links with less importance. A link that is inside a paragraph of text is typically given more weight, because it looks like a more natural link. It looks like a news site citing a reference, or a writer linking to a particular resource.
By being careful with your outbound linking strategy, you can maximize the PageRank that’s sent to the pages you really care about, while minimizing the bleed of PR to pages you don’t. This is why it is so important to carefully plan your outbound links.

Taking a closer look at what Googleââs official stance is, youâll find that Google doesnât condemn outright companies who sell or buy links. In fact, they state on their website that, âBuying and selling links is a normal part of the economy of the web when done for advertising purposes, and not for manipulation of search results.â And here is where Googleââs new campaign runs into trouble. How does one decide what links are for âadvertising purposesâ vs. âmanipulation of search results?â
It is inherent that any article, review or informational posting a company has on their website will have words and phrases that will register in search results. The information wouldnât be relevant to the reader if it werenât also relevant in searches, and vice-versa. The same can be said for articles and reviews that are on other sites but link back to a particular companyââs own website. The dilemma for Google is that there is really no way of knowing when and if a link was paid for.
The fact is that the Google algorithm canât distinguish between a paid link and an equity link. Consultants often provide links to companies they are doing or have done work for. Authors link to bookstores carrying their latest work, and software firms link to client companies. These arenât paid links, but they sure do increase the rankings for sites that, quite frankly, improve the bottom line for them personally.
The next blog you visit may have a few relevant articles on great ways to raise an all-natural garden. If the blog is associated with a site that sells all-natural fertilizers and pesticides, itââs only natural that these articles will provide needed and valued information. If these sites link to other sites that have books about natural gardening, how can Google determine whether these are paid links or natural?
The simple answer is, it isnât possible. These links could be because the writer of the articles actually uses and endorses the products mentioned in the links or the book publisher and the gardening supplies house have a reciprocal agreement. Other reasons could be because the book publisher paid for a link, the owner of the publishing house received a free load of fertilizer to try out (in hopes of being mentioned in a future book); he liked it; he thanked them with a link, or even the gardening supplies company is owned by a man whose sister is a sales associate for the book publisher.
But the results are the same. The links are relevant, regardless of whether they were paid for in cash, as a favor, in trade or in sweat equity. Itââs this vary blurring of the lines that makes it so practical and helpful to buy links. The more relevant information you provide to consumers, the more valuable you become. If a link is relevant, helpful and trustworthy, it should and will increase the ranking of the site itââs on.
Google has asked that Internet users report sites that have paid links. Itââs a laughable suggestion. How does anyone else on the Internet know whether you have paid for a link or not? They canât. And this is why, although some people may temporarily âgo undergroundâ with purchased links, the practice isnât going to stop. Itââs a good thing, because these links increase competition and encourage growth and change, two very important aspects of a dynamic marketplace. Whether you buy a link or receive it unsolicited, itââs going to be useful and relevant. If it werenât, the link wouldnât show up in Googleââs algorithm anyway.
Finally, Google suggests that those who buy links are âbuying page rank.â Page rank isnât for sale, particularly since it is owned by Google. The algorithm removes or penalizes non-relevant information in search results. If the information is relevant, it will improve rankings. To that end, it doesnât matter at all whether that link was paid for in cash or trade.

Good link building is a fine intricate line weaving through the Internet. We all know that linking to sites that compliments yours are a sure way to get a better ranking with the search engines. Before asking for links make sure that you:
1. Have a link ready before asking for linking back to you.
2. Supply the location of the reciprocal link
3. Make it easy for them. Give the link text to use – you can even supply it in html so it is just for copy and paste
4. They have a links page
5. Supply all necessary information to make it easy for them to link to you.
How to get link partners.
1. Search the major search engines with your target keywords.
2. Visit those pages that came up.
3. Make sure these sites compliment yours.
4. Look for sites that are not in strong competition with you.

You’ll know by now that link building is one of the fundamentals of SEO. That’s a given right? Of course it is – like it or not current search engine algorithms base a lot of their processes on the calculating the quantity, quality, theme and contextual relevance of links to a website.
Before I go on, let me make a little proviso; I’m not saying that link building or the Link building Services is the ONLY thing that has an impact on your search engine rankings, just that it is a big part of it.
If you’re serious about SEO then you need to get serious about link building and start looking around at the different types of links you’re going to try an get and the best Link building Services you have.
So what’s a base link then?
For the purpose of this discussion, the term ‘base links’ refers to those relatively easy to get back links from the likes of:
* Web directories
* Article directories
* Press release directories
* Discussion forums
* Social book marking
What do I need to do to get base links?
I said before that these types of links are relatively easy to get, but it’s not all plain sailing. It’s still going to take a bit of organization and a good deal of time to make the most from them. You’re going to need:
* A good quality website
* Some good quality, keyword rich internal (fresh onsite) & external (fresh offsite) content
* A structured link building plan
* At least 2-3 hours a week
Do base links really work?
If the question is; “Will I rank No.1 for my top keyword just by getting links from directories, articles, Press releases, forums & book marking sites?” Then the answer is ‘PROBABLY NOT’
But if the question is: “Will sensible link building from directories, articles, Press releases, forums & book marking sites help my overall back-linking campaign?” Then the answer is a definite ‘YES’
You’ve probably read all types of stuff across the forums about the value of various types of links. My advice at this stage is to treat forum information with kid gloves. Sure forums are a good place to hang out and soak up some extra knowledge … but don’t believe everything you read.
In my SEO career I’ve not worked with or analyzed one website ranking on commercially beneficial key terms that hasn’t indulged in some form of base linking. So go figure and get cracking!
Tips for effective base-linking
* Have a look at what your competitors are doing – no harm in trying to replicate successful link-building efforts.
* Don’t spam – we’re not talking about link-spamming here, so only do it if it’s relevant and you’ve genuinely got something to add.
* Get on a roll – consistency is key. Once you start, you need to keep it up, increasing your efforts on a monthly basis
* Don’t give up – thinking of giving it 3 weeks and seeing how it goes? Forget it, you need to put at least 6 months into it. Patience is a virtue.
