Fewer and fewer business owners are spending their precious advertising dollars on listings in any of the various telephone books published today. Not that many years ago, it was deemed essential for businesses, large and small, to be included in these much-used publications, but the world has changed tremendously since then.
Studies have shown that most consumers now turn to the internet when looking for information on local companies. Even those who intend to phone with a question or to make a purchase or reservation will pull the website up first to find the phone number. It actually takes less time for many people to type a name in a search engine than it does to find the phone book, look up the listing and try to read the tiny type.
Those businesses without an effective local internet marketing campaign are at a disadvantage in today’s competitive environment. In years past, there may have been validity to the argument that only those who did business nationally or internationally needed a strong web presence, but that kind of thinking, today, is likely to put a company out of business, in a very short amount of time.
Unfortunately, this has created a fair amount of difficulty for many small business owners. Historically, these hard-working entrepreneurs were stretched to accomplish all of the many tasks required to keep them afloat. Most were not computer savvy and quite a few would actually be considered techno-phobic. They were not comfortable with computers taking over areas that had always been handled personally and believed that local web marketing could never take the place of the one-to-one networking that has always served Main Street, America. So, many were resistant to investing time and energy that was already in short supply into this new way of doing business.
For others, however, the concept of being able to realistically compete, globally, with companies much larger was immediately grasped and put to use. Many of these businesses were successful, but it still took awhile for the value of local internet marketing to catch on. Once it did, everything changed.
No longer does a business have a choice about whether to have an online presence or not. Technology seemingly changes by the minute, but local web marketing is always an option. Customers and clients may have let their “fingers do the walking” in the old days, but, now, they let their fingers do the typing to search for restaurants, shops, attorneys, doctors, dentists, plumbers, dog groomers and every other item or service imaginable as they walk or drive down the street. If Company X doesn’t pop up in their browser, then it is a safe bet that Company Y will, and that’s where their money will go.
The good news is that an effective local internet marketing program can not only keep pace with the competition, but actually take a business to new levels. The opportunities are endless for those willing to embrace the challenges and the advantages of technology.

Perhaps you have observed an interesting development the last few times you have searched online using the term “your city insurance”. After conducting searches for more than 27 main markets, I have seen the exact same unsettling development in all of them. And if I’m forecasting this correctly, it could mean the loss of thousands of dollars of premium to your agency. Taken away from you almost without your knowledge.
This is what I noticed: National lead generation companies are starting to bump local insurance agents off the first page of search results for their city making those agents virtually invisible to people looking for an insurance quote in their city.
It is usually widely known that the majority of individuals do not go beyond the first results page when the search for something online.
You may be asking yourself, “So what’s the big deal about being on the first page of Google?” Not only does a first page listing virtually guarantee hundreds of visitors to your website each month, but it means that those visitors are actively seeking an “insurance quote” which means they are in buying mode. In other words, they are targeted traffic.
Therefore, losing these visitors could result in substantial revenue losses for your firm.
But, it’s not too late to act. There is still time to beat these national companies at their own game. What you need is usually a general grasp of Internet search engine Optimization concepts. Let’s start using the first step to getting back on the first page.
First Step: Be certain that your main keyword is actually used throughout your On-Page Optimization (Meta description, Meta Keywords,and also H1 tag). You will probably use the term “your city insurance”. If you don’t know how to make these changes yourself, just contact your webmaster. 4. Keywords. Be sure you have a list of phrases you would like used on the page. Also bear in mind that the keywords relevant to page 1 stay on page 1 while page 2 keywords stay on page 2, and so on. This is to guarantee every page is different in its offering, avoiding redundancy. The days of using the dusty old telephone book to find local businesses are over. Today, most costumers actively search for your services on the web, mobile devices, enhanced 411 services or other high tech devices. Most people like to narrow down their searches to their cities or neighborhoods because of the rising need among visitors to know who they are dealing with, or they may want to personally visit your location. Local Search Marketing will build brand awareness, leverage trust for local visitors, and most importantly increase ROI. Hiring a good SEO service provider can maximize your return on investment for pennies on the dollar. If you are a do it yourself person, then following the steps below will help you along the way.
Step One: Get listed, claim your listing, and update your business information on top local data providers and top local search engines for free:
Local Data Providers: Amacai (or Localeze), InfoUSA, and Acxiom.
Local Search Site: Google Maps, Yahoo Local, MSN Live Search, and Ask City.
Top internet Yellow Pages Sites: YellowPages.com, SuperPages.com, and DexOnline.com.
Step Two: Submit and optimize your website to Goggles Places page (formerly known as Google Local Business Center). Make sure to include the following:
1. Basic business information
2. Email, description, and website
3. Service areas
4. Business category selection
5. Hours of operation and payment options
6. Images and videos
7. Any other details of your Business
8. Last but not least, review for accuracy, and then submit to save the changes.
Step Three: In order to “get found” on major search engines and to increase your ranking, start building citations (or links) to your listing. Most citations will contain the following: your DBA name, business phone number, business website URL and business categorization. Any additional sources that will allow more rich information about your business such as customer reviews will also help your ranking.
Step Four: Select the correct service provider: your website should be hosted in the country where most of your customers live. For instance, if your business is based in the US and your domain is hosted in the UK, the chance of your site ranking well in the UK is higher since search engines will interpret your website to be a UK website!

Remember the old days when all you needed was an ad in the Yellow Pages to make the phone ring at your Jacksonville business? Now prospective customers rarely use the Yellow Pages. And they’re not reading local newspapers either. So how can you help them find you? The best way to reach out and touch your prospects is through your website. Over 70% of U.S. adults let their fingers do their walking on the Internet when seeking a local source. In fact, over one billion Local Searches take place every month online. Search engines are now the #1 resource used by consumers looking for products and services from local businesses. And 82% of local searchers follow up offline via an in-store visit, phone call or purchase.Think about it. If you could get more visitors to your website, especially targeted visitors who are searching for your product or service, wouldn’t you generate more sales?
SEO Delivers New Customers to Your Website
Americans conducted 14.7 billion searches in December 2009 on the leading search engines like Google, Yahoo, Bing and Ask.com. It’s a massive audience, one that offers a wealth of opportunity for businesses that know how to target it. Sure you can buy ads on the search engines, but paid sponsorship (pay-per-click ads) isn’t nearly as effective as natural (organic) ranking. Over 85% of all clicks resulting from a search go to organic listings with only the remaining 15% going to pay-per-click ads. Because 91% of people won’t go past page one of search engine results, your site must rank at the top for its main keywords. Websites on that first page get the most traffic, and presumably the most sales. It’s reminiscent of the old days when businesses with names starting with “A” received the most calls simply because they appeared first in the Yellow Pages. On search engines, you can rank high regardless of what letter your business name begins with. What matters is the quality of your website and how well it’s optimized. Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of making your website appears at the top of the search engines to increase the quantity and relevance of traffic it receives.
How Search Engine Ranking Is Determined
To understand ranking, you first have to consider the mission of search engines. Their objective is to return results that best answer the search query. If your website is the most relevant to the search request, it will rank high. The Internet is primarily a word-based medium. Every web page tells its own story and should be relevant to one or more search keywords or phrases. If you’ve optimized your pages correctly, your website should come up when someone types those keyword phrases into a search engine. Clear and compelling content that incorporates keywords on your pages will appeal to the search engines. However, that content should also engage your visitors, as you never want to forget their needs. Consider outsourcing the content writing if that’s not your strong point.
Stay Local for Success
If your business depends on local customers, then your website should target your local area. Focus on your city, region or state. When people use a search engine to find a product or service, they often type in their location with a search phrase. For example, there were 2,800 searches for “Jacksonville dentist” in the month of January 2010. If you’re a dentist, wouldn’t you want your website to come up for all those searches? There were over 21,427 searches for “Jacksonville auto repair” in January 2010. If you’re a local auto mechanic, your website needs to come up for those searches or you’re losing business to competitors. Furthermore, targeting a keyword phrase like “Jacksonville dentist” or “Jacksonville auto repair” is likely to be much more successful than optimizing your pages for “dentist” or “auto repair.” Generic and popular keyword phrases have too much competition. So focus on your geographical area when creating content for your website.
Link Building Is Next
Link popularity refers to the number of links pointing TO your site FROM other sites on the web. Adding links is one of the most important factors in getting top placement on the major search engines. Generally, a site with more inbound links will be positioned higher than a similar site with fewer links. Try to obtain links from various types of relevant websites, including social media sites, directories and article websites. Those links should go to different pages, not just your home page, so as to promote your entire site. The best technique is to spread the links around and gradually build up the number of links over time.
Websites Are Dynamic
Unlike the ad you once placed in the Yellow Pages or the 10,000 brochures you printed a few years back, your website should not stay the same. Once built, it should forever be growing and improving. The websites that rank best are continually adding new content and gaining more links. If you don’t have the resources in-house to work on your website, consider hiring a search engine optimization (SEO) company to assist you.

3 Basic Social Media Tips for All Local Home Improvement Contractors

Darren Salyer of Total Home Remodeling in Wentzville, MO has been running FaceBook ads since December 2009. By March 2010, he had only spent a total of 5 dollars to gain some needed attention for his then struggling business.
As a result of his dabbling in Social Media Marketing (SMM), Darren’s Facebook fan page received eighty-four clicks over the three month period with about sixty-five of those visitors moving on to review his business website.
It would seem that the marketing effort paid off for Total Home Remodeling, which was rewarded with three nice jobs to bid on. The total value of the three bids was ,000. Not bad for a 5 total investment.
Under the marketing blog where Darren Salyer posted the results of his online marketing strategy, he reported that “things look good” for getting all three of these contracts signed. Regardless of the final outcome, he snagged three promising opportunities that many not otherwise have come his way had he not given FaceBook’s pay-per-click advertising a try.
Hard Times Call For Hard and Fast Solutions
The current recession has taken its toll on the construction industry. Many independent contractors have been forced to close up shop; while those still hanging on have had to cut back and revise their marketing strategies as Darren Salyer may also been forced to do.
Strapped for cash, many small contractors have had to resort to lower-cost business marketing ideas to bring in more work. Social Media Marketing has proved to be rather effective in helping some of these builders and handymen reach out to a new audience of Web savvy consumers; many of whom live locally and are in need of quality home improvement services.
Local contractors are, for the most part, chasing the same limited pool of work in their area and should be seeking out marketing strategies and tactics to help them stand out among those in an increasingly competitive crowd. The Web offers these small business owners what may be the marketing equivalent of “low price flights” to the usual year long PennySaver ads, which come with recurring cost. Very often these kind of local ads offer little or no response during extended periods throughout the year.

You say you don’t get Social Media? You will not get ‘it’ until you have experimented with ‘it’. Some use it to create a network of friends and business people to communicate with. And, others use it to “lurk” and listen to the conversations of others. “People are talking about your business, so you may as well get down in the weeds and know what’s going on.”
Tip 2: Engage. “Social media is the tool, social engagement is what you do to create awareness and earn sales” This is according to Social Media Guru, Brian Solis, who has offered a number of bestselling books dealing with Social Media for business. Solis goes on to explain that “Creating a presence in social networks is mandatory, but it’s also not enough. Actively and thoughtfully engaging consumers in social networks is quickly becoming an expectation. It’s up to your business to develop a following.”
Tip 3: Respond. Great response begins with great listening. Lindsay Lebresco of Conversation, a Social Media agency recommends the basics like Google Alerts, Twitter, Technorati and search engines to search out key categories – using keywords – that will let you know what people are saying about you and your business. Carefully read and understand what is being said; (if the remarks are negative) take a few deep breaths and perhaps sleep on it; think of a positive way to frame your response and respond in an appropriate manner.
Before You Can Soar You Must Build A Place to Land
Oh, by the way there is a preliminary step to these three. You won’t be successful in social media marketing without, first, having an effective website for your consumers to visit when they want to check you out. Most potential customers start their consideration process at your website. It must be professional looking, informative and able to bring them to whatever the next step is that you want them to take leading to doing business with you – a “call to action.”
So take a look at your website and ask yourself the following questions about it? Does Your Website Really Measure Up?
1. Is your website’s design aesthetically pleasing?
2. How intuitive is your website to navigate?
3. Does your website have a clear statement of PURPOSE near the top of its homepage?
4. Is your website copy concisely written and richly informative?
5. Do you update your website content REGULARLY?
6. Does your website have a “call to action” on every page for customers to respond to?
7. Does your website’s index page draw visitors further into its content and to where you display and sell your products and contract your services?
8. Is your website designed to encourage future visits (i.e. is there a newsletter; a tell-a-friend feature; a blog with an RSS button to subscribe with?)
Contractors, you can definitely “build some sweat equity” into the process of social media and most likely will get the business results you are looking for. You just need to be smart in the ways you employ the Internet in order to be easily found by consumers and then, be able to impress them when they land at your website for their very first time.
If your website passes the effectiveness test and if you have done all your homework with regard to local geo-search, you’ll be very pleased at the additional phone calls you’ll be getting from local customers looking for a reliable residential general contractor in the local area .
