A web site is a compilation of information on a particular subject or topic. Thus designing a website is basically to arrange and create the web pages that make up the website. A website may be compared to a book, with the pages being the web pages. Each web page has some information on the subject matter.

All the web pages together provide the complete information package for the visitors of the website.
Web designing is the process to create a website. A website provides information to an end user who requests for the information.

1. The information content: This deals with the information material that should be on the site and how this should be arranged to provide intended message
2. The Usability: The site has to be friendly to the visitor, in terms of navigation and ease of use.
3. The Look: The web pages must be designed so that one single style of message presentation should be prevalent throughout. The style has to be thoroughly professional with relevant materials in appealing presentation.
4. The Visibility: The site must be easy to find through major search engines and advertisements

The first web page is known as the Home page. This usually has a welcome message, a language or region selection system, disclaimer etc. Each web page is an HTML file. Each web page has its own URL. All the web pages are linked together via a navigation menu. This menu has hyperlinks that link all the pages together.

Web site design requires interlocking of multiple disciplines. Information systems, information technology and communication design all play their individual roles. The components of a website are front end and back end. The front end is the content that the people can view and the back end has the source code, invisible scripts and components from the server side that process the front end output.

When someone in the dental industry talks about dental marketing online, they usually are referring to website design.


But in the overall scope of internet dental marketing, a website is just a simple step to an effective dental practice internet marketing system.


The truth is, a dental website needs the same amount of attention as a good postcard, or phone book ad. Pretty pictures and fancy animations do not effectively CONVERT the visitor into a patient, and that’s the whole purpose right?


You have to look at your marketing as a series of steps to a door. Your goal is to get a patient to walk in the door.


The goal of one step then is to get them to move to the next step, and so on.


What is the step before your website. It can be a Google search, a link form another website, or even a mention on a direct mailer that creates a website visit.


Once the patient is at your website, what is the next step for them? Are they supposed to call your office? Are they supposed to download your new patient forms? Are they supposed to email you?


Is it clear what your patients need to do to take the next step?


Many dental marketing website designers will load a website up with links, animations, videos, and little to no text. This causes a visitor to click through a bunch of pages, but really offers no direction when it comes to what the next step is.


The dental website design with a lot of options and pages may work well for a retail site like Amazon, but when there is a specific purpose for your patient everything on your dental website should point them in that direction.


In fact, if you want to provide your current patients with a lot of information, but drive your new visitors to become patients, why not have 2 websites?


Domain names are cheap, and it would be as easy to have one dental website as it would two.


You could them post all of your information about Invisalign, or information you use in marketing dental implants on one, and on the other, post a structured presentation that takes your patients step by step through the information you want to present.


Your new patients will then be directed through the presentation, and have it be clear what the next step is.


This new patient website would then be the one you print in your yellow pages, and make your Google ads link to. It would be a great first point of contact for your practice.


Your current patient website would be printed in your newsletter, and on any correspondence you give to your current patients. You could even post it up in your office as a special “patients only” website, adding exclusivity.


So, when you are considering dental website marketing, ask your designer about two different websites, and make sure to do the “mom” test. That is, have your mom look at the site, and ask her what she thinks the next step is. This one never fails to give you a DUH moment.

Here’s an old parlor trick of SEO folks from the late nineties. The SEO agency would tell you that they would be happy to be paid on performance and then define “performance” as keyword ranking. They told clients they promised page one ranking on Google for a great term like “big yellow bananas in Tallahasee.” They achieved the ranking. And of course, client’s business didn’t change one bit. And SEOs developed roughly the same ethical image of heroin smugglers.

Then smart SEOs and clients said, “Let’s measure how much business comes from search. Our keywords may be on page one or page two or page five of the search engine results, but what really matters is this: looking at all the traffic that comes from search engines, are we getting more leads, sales, media coverage, voters, donors or members then we were before?”

Then a few years back we all started to realize that we need to pitch bloggers like we pitch reporters. A year ago people just said, “Get me some of that Twitter.” Then we all decided we need to set goals and track success. The easy way to do this is to set goals on number of followers. So, 150 followers is better than 50 and 1,000 is really great.

Well, maybe.

See let’s take it down to the business goal. If Oprah retweets you and drives 500 people to your Web site and you sell a lot of books, which is a great thing — even if she is your only follower. Now let’s say there is this guy John you have never heard of. But John has connections on Facebook with editors and analysts. And on LinkedIn, he’s connected to CTOs from Fortune 500 companies. And on Twitter, he is followed by your Governor. And when John talks about your products and services, your Web site traffic triples and your leads from your site quadruple. That’s what I’m talking about.

The bottom line? Tracking number and types of social media connections is important, but followers and fans don’t make payroll. Stick to the business goals. If social media is driving more sales, leads, media exposure, or whatever your core success metric is, then the program is successful.
