Search Engine Ranking Myths
Posted: Jul 17, 2009 |Comments: 0
|
Search engine optimisation (SEO) is a complex and diverse topic thatâs both never constant and constantly changing. There are hundreds of myths about SEO, some were once true but no longer apply (outdated information), while others were simply never true to begin with (disinformation).
Everyone wants to increase their rankings with the search engines and because of this there is a ton of information available on how to go about it. Unfortunately, while some of this information is real, there is just as much or more information that is outdated, wrong, and a complete waste of time, money and energy on your part.
One of the myths is to use meta tags to boost your research results. This is proven to be useless because while keywords are still essential, meta keyword tags are ignored by search engines since a long time ago. Another myth is that pay per click advertising methods has some sort of impact on the search rankings of certain search engines.
Google Page Rank is way over-valued by many webmasters. It is not unusual for a website with a PageRank of 2 to outrank a website with a PageRank of 5. The reason is that PageRank is only an indicator of one of many factors, and PageRank is not even a reliable indicator, at that.
There are numerous SEO companies that promise to get you ranked high with Google and other major search engines. They may make good on their promise and get you ranked in the top ten. But then what? Don’t forget that every other web site owner is going to be trying the same strategy and the competition does not stop once you’ve positioned yourself on the first page.
A Google sitemap may help you to achieve a higher ranking as it helps to make a website crawler friendly. But it’s also true that it doesn’t guarantee for better ranking.
Reciprocal linking is quite helpful in better ranking
Outbound links to related and unrelated sites are factored into page rank. One way links count higher than reciprocated links. The more quality inbound links to your site, the higher the PR, but nobody knows exactly how Google factors their PR and their algorithm is constantly adjusted.
This is really a myth. Although a domain name with keyword do in fact play some important role when calculation search engine relevancy, however, my little experiment showed me Google did and could separate a non hyphenated domain with keywords and a hyphenated domain with keywords.
A general myth is that you get bad links, and your site is doomed! If so, everyone would leave their own ranking and start concentrating on how to link each and every rotten link to their competitors’ site. Links to unnecessary sites may irritate the visitors, but certainly not the search engines.
Links are important to increasing traffic, Keyword Rich Anchor links are an important factor in the Search Engine Results, but generic links that create Page Rank, not a major be all end all Issue. So if you are buying links or selling links for Links Sake, you are being taken advantage of, and are selling and buying into miss-information.

Want your website to be listed higher in the search engine ranking results? Unless your site is already sitting in the number one spot, I’m sure the answer is yes â who wouldn’t want that? But Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is a complicated process, and there is so much mis-information and bad advice floating around, it can be difficult to know which tactics work, and which ones are nonsense.
Here is a list of five SEO myths that not only don’t work, they can get your website banned by the search engines if you use them!
“The more times I use a keyword on a web page, the better.”
This myth can definitely get you in trouble with the search engines! Of course you should use a keyword in the content of your web page, but using it to many times on the same page can get you flagged for keyword spamming. Although there is no definitive rule on how much is too much, it’s generally thought that a keyword should have a density between 2% and 6%.
“Using the meta keyword tag will boost my rankings.”
Wrong â the meta keyword tag is actually useless, and will not help your rankings one bit. There are other meta tags, however, like Title and Description, that are definitely used by the search engines in evaluating your web pages, but the keyword meta tag is not used at all for ranking web pages.
“Trading links or reciprocal links is a great way to build inbound links to my site.”
The search engines look for naturally occurring links coming from quality sites, and their algorithms are quite good at telling the difference between natural links and reciprocal and 3-way linking schemes. Build your inbound links naturally using standard techniques, because reciprocal links are discounted by the search engines, and link “buying” can get you banned altogether.
“Submitting my site to hundreds of search engines is a good way to improve my rankings.”
Not only is it unnecessary to submit your site to the search engines (the search engine spiders will discover your site on their own), submitting a site does not mean it will be listed in the search results. There are hundreds of factors that search engines consider when determining how to rank a site, but submission is not one of them.
“As the business owner, I’m the best person to choose the keywords I want to be listed for.”
Although it may be appropriate for an owner to help select the list of “seed words” to use in SEO (seed words are the terms used to start the keyword research), you definitely want real-time data to tell you which keywords will perform the best for your business! For instance, you may think customers search for “ABC widgets”, but the data may show you that searchers actually typed in “blue widgets” or “big blue widgets” and never once typed in “ABC widgets”. Why would you waste time and effort optimizing for a term that nobody ever searches on?
We all want our business websites to show up in the top of the search results, but be careful â what you think you know might actually end up hurting you!

Getting Your Articles in Google News – Myths and Facts
Getting Your Articles in Google News – Myths and Facts
The Google News team made an interesting post titled âPsst⦠secrets of Google News exposed!â at official Google blog. The post explained about various Myths and facts related with Google news. Posted by Andy Golding, Software Engineer at Google, Andy also shared about how Google include and publish (rank) articles in Google news.
Coming directly to Myths and facts explained.
1. Updating article once itâs included in Google news helps in higher rankings.
False, According to Google the current Google news crawler doesnât revisit the articles. Every article/news in crawled only once so changing or updating the article will not help at all in fact any changes you make will not be shown at Google news website. I hope Google news crawler will soon have the functionality of revisiting the WebPages.
2. Placing image next to article improves the rankings.
False, Google do include images in news results and displays them next to your news item, but it cannot read the images and rankings purely depends upon text accompanied in your news item and not on having images in the news.
3. Articles with images and video are not included.

7 Myths Of Landing Page Quality Score
7 Myths Of Landing Page Quality Score
Your landing page quality affects your AdWords quality score. and quality score has a large impact on the success of an AdWords account. So, it’s important to separate the fact from the fiction about what affects landing page quality score, and to understand what you can do to improve your landing page. Myth 1: My keyword has to be on the landing page
False. The search engines understand semantic indexing. If a page is about cell phones, it probably has the words: Blue tooth, 3G, mobile or cell, phone, etc on the landing page. If your keyword was ‘mobile phone’ and you sent traffic to your page about ‘cell phones’ that did not mention the word mobile on it, your quality score should not suffer.
It can be a good practice from a consumer’s standpoint to use their lexicon (mobile or cell); however, it is not an absolute must. The closer related your landing page’s theme is to your keyword, the better your landing page quality score will be. However, it is not necessary to use the keyword on the landing page from the quality score perspective. Myth 2: Adding a privacy policy will increase my quality score
It depends. If your site doe not collect any personal information, then you do not need a privacy policy (from Google’s perspective, but your country may have different laws regarding TOS and privacy policies). However, if you collect personal information, such as an email address, phone number, or credit card, having a privacy policy will help your quality score.
One of the quality score guidelines is transparency. Your privacy policy may say that you will sell any information given to you to the highest bidder. However, the fact you put that into your Privacy Policy means you were transparent to the user on what would happen to their personal information. Myth 3: My site is in Flash, so I can never have a good quality score
False. Google has made many improvements with regards to indexing flash. This does not mean they will index your site properly. An exercise you can try is to put your URL into the AdWords Keyword Tool and have your page spidered. If the suggested keywords are similar to what you think the page is about, then you are generally in good shape. If there aren’t any results, or the suggested keywords are completely different than what you think the page is about, you may wish to try making your site more search-engine friendly using progressive enhancement technologies such as SIFR (and see the SEO: Flash area here on Search Engine Land or resources at Jane & Robot). Myth 4: My page is all images. The new load time guidelines are lowering my quality score
False. Google only looks at how long it takes the page’s HTML to load in determining landing page load times. If your site is loading so slowly that you see a problem with load times in your AdWords account, you have larger issues with your site. Just loading a page’s HTML (not scripts, nor images) should be exceptionally quick. It should be noted, Google has said they may eventually incorporate all page elements into the load time for determining quality score. If this happens, you may need to optimize your images, scripts, and other called files. Myth 5: Adding an ‘about us’ page will increase my quality score
While this is a good practice from a user standpoint, it is not an absolute must. As above, the actual AdWords guideline is to be transparent to the user. My testing has not shown that this will help quality score yet. However, it is a good practice as this could very easily be added to the landing page quality score formula and being transparent to users about your business is very much inline with Google’s goals. Myth 6: Google hates affiliates
False. The question affiliates should ask themselves is: “Was the user’s search experience made better by visiting my page before going to the merchant’s page?”. If you review several services and show the benefits and features of each service so that a searcher can make a more informed decision – then you’ve helped the search process. If your page is just about a single product and every single link from that page just goes to the same merchant page, then you’ve not added to the search experience.
There are many exceptional affiliate sites that add to the search experience. Google does not hate affiliates. Google hates making the search process longer for the user. Myth 7: Micro sites and dedicated landing pages no longer work
False. While Google does wish a user to have choices, you can easily build a page that showcases a single product or service while still giving the user navigational choices. While micro sites or one-page-wonder sites have taken some quality score hits over the past couple years, dedicated landing pages are still effective.
When designing your page, look for non-intrusive ways to add some navigational elements to the page. If you consider this from the user’s standpoint, the page you chose for them may not be the actual product they wished to see. More importantly, if a user wants to find out more about your company before committing to trusting you with personal information; do they have any options?

Organic Search Engine Marketing Myths – Part I
Organic Search Engine Marketing Myths – Part I
Search engine marketing is the process of promoting website on search engines. This marketing service is categorised into two types â organic (unpaid) and inorganic (paid). The former deals with natural search engine optimisation techniques â on-page and off-page â that help websites in achieving higher rankings on SERPs. And, the latter deals with Pay per Click advertising, wherein advertisers bid on keywords to get their ads listed on top spots of ’sponsored listings’ on a result page.
Both these techniques are quite different and are usually differentiable on the basis of money involved. SEO is a complex and time-consuming process that does not guarantee results. However, marketers often do not comprehend its subtleties and pin high hopes on their efforts.
The following are a few common myths organic optimisation that will help you steer clear of any misconceptions in this regard:
- It cannot guarantee rankings on SERPs. The process of web page crawling and indexing is based on algorithms. Each search engine works on a different programme and therefore, there is no sure-shot route to success on the World Wide Web. Even though a number of service providers claim to take your website to top rankings, the truth is, it is something that cannot be assured.
- A number of online businesses depend on their own employees to use the right kind of optimisation techniques and better their site’s prospects. However, the truth is, optimisation can be quite complicated and time-consuming for a novice or amateur. Even if you have a team of web content writers, developers and optimisers, you will have to put in constant efforts to make it a success. Therefore, it is best left to professionals because they are well-aware of latest trends, and thus are in a better position to adhere to search engine guidelines and improve the rankings of your site. It is better to make this investment in search engine marketing services rather than wasting your time, money and energy on something you are not competent at.

Organic Search Engine Marketing Myths – Part II
Complicated as it is, search engine optimisation can generate a lot of over-expectations in the an online business owner’s mind. Known as the organic form of marketing on search engines, this process is used by optimisers worldwide to achieve higher rankings on search result pages.
However, most of them fail to understand or accept that the online marketplace is a very dynamic field. New trends emerge here almost everyday, and it is simply not feasible to live up to all of them instantaneously. This is the reason why there can be no guarantee of SEO success.
Some common myths about the process of optimisation have been dealt with in the article titled Organic Search Engine Optimisation Myths â Part I, and a few others are listed below:
- Many people believe that websites are optimised during the development phase itself. This is not true because most of this process takes place only after the site is completely presentable on the Internet. However, designers can take a few elements under consideration to create a search-engine friendly website that’ll entice search engine spiders to crawl your web pages.
- As per popular perception, the use of keywords in the Keyword Meta Tag is more than enough for better ranking of a page. However, the fact is, you need to incorporate important keywords into your content and other meta tags so as to attract search spiders and give your pages a better chance at indexing.
- In case you thought hidden text or links can get you higher rankings, think again. Nowadays, search engine guidelines have become stricter and do not allow the use of negative tactics of any kind. And, if caught, you risk the chance of being blacklisted, penalised or even banned from their network.
- The belief that search engine marketing services are a one-time effort has led to the downfall of many a web business. Optimisation is a never-ending process that needs constant monitoring and upgrading. Pay heed to search queries, fix up broken links and take care of the minutest details that can get your site back to its high standings on SERPs.
As an optimiser, you ought to pay attention to the kind of external and internal links your site is associated with. Apart from getting you higher PageRank, these links ensure that you get better rankings on result listings as well. Delve on quality and not quantity if you want to be successful at Internet marketing.

Some of the Common Myths Related to Top SEO Companies
These days, virtually all the online marketers are gearing up to hire the services of top SEO companies for successful online marketing campaigns. But, unfortunately, there are still several myths associated with SEO and SEO service providers that are influencing the decision of online marketers about selecting the best SEO company.
In-House SEO is Cheaper than Hiring SEO services
It is true that the prices of top SEO companies differ on the basis of the services that they provide to their customers. However, many business owners think that creating an in-house SEO department can be cost-effective. Ironically, the SEO service providers can use their experience and expertise to develop strategic marketing approaches for their clients at a reasonable price saving the resources of the online marketers.
Top SEO companies Can Guarantee #1 Search Engine Ranking
No one can guarantee #1 ranking in search engines. The search engine algorithms are changing frequently and their ranking techniques are also evolving to produce the best results for the user. It is difficult, even for the top SEO companies, to guarantee top rankings on the SERPs. However, hiring an efficient SEO service provider can help you boost your websites ranking in search engines and increase its visibility. Hence while selecting your SEO service provider try to about its success in handling other projects.
No SEO is Required Once High Ranking are Achieved
SEO is an ongoing process and it is really essential that the process should be continued even after your website ranks high in search engines. The time taken for websites to achieve top rankings on the SERPs varies depending on so many factors such as their designing, theme of the website, strategies developed for SEO, etc. The top SEO companies that are experienced in this field know that there are millions of websites competing for top rankings and anyone of them can take your position with better optimization techniques. But the continuous SEO process is essential to retain the position and increase it further.
Websites Should be Optimized when They are Designed or Developed
It is true that website designing is one of the major aspects of SEO and a properly developed website can create a lot of difference in obtaining visibility, driving traffic and increasing the conversion rate. However, most of the optimization processes of the website are done after the designing. The top SEO companies strategize the SEO campaign and accordingly, do research for the key phrases, optimize each page of the website with their target keywords and create inbound links for the website. Websites also need to be optimized in a later period in case there is a change in the existing keywords or new keywords are added to the website.
More Number of Links Means High Search Engine Rankings
It is a misconception that quantity of links decides the rankings of a webpage on SERPs. The search engines are growing smarter and the major search engines like Google are giving more importance to quality of the links rather than the quantity. Hence, the top SEO companies, these days, are assuring more about the quality of the links.
These are the common myths that still make the difficult for the online marketers to select from the top SEO companies.

However, quite a few organic SEO companies are embroiled in some organic SEO myths. Let’s take a quick look at what keeps some organic SEO companies in the shadows.
Organic SEO Myth #1 – SEO Copy Should Be 250 Words
One of the most prevalent SEO myths among the organic SEO companies is the number of words on the web page. It is believed that short copies rank better than longer copies. There are no such established rules that substantiate this supposition. However, a word count of 250 words with an ideal keyword density of 2% is, usually, universally acceptable.
Organic SEO Myth #2 – Google Sitemap is Inevitable
An organic SEO company need not worry about the Google sitemap on their website as Google sitemap no longer influences the rankings of a website. However, having a Google sitemap is not a negative factor. If your website is well-designed with a crawler-friendly navigation, you should be able to rank pretty well on that.
Organic SEO Myth #3 – URL Submission to Search Engines is Vital
Gone are the days when this practice was very helpful in bringing good results in terms of higher search engine ranking. URL submission to search engines is no longer effective now. However, submission to search engines is not bad at all for any organic SEO company.
Organic SEO Myth #4 – Header Tags Can Boost Organic Rankings
Header Tags such as H1, H1 and H2 should be used only when they are required to complement the webpage from design stand point. There is very little evidence that corroborate the popular belief that Header Tags influence the search engine rankings of an organic SEO company.
Organic SEO Myth #4 – PPC Ads Influence Website Rankings
Many webmasters wrongly take PPC Ads as a supporting camping to their organic SEO campaigns. However, it is not at all true that running Google AdWords affect any organic SEO campaign, either positively or negatively. It has absolutely nothing to do with the website rankings of any website.
Organic SEO Myth #5 – Meta Keywords Must Be Used on the Webpage
One of the most hyped organic SEO myths is using the meta keywords on the webpages. Meta keywords are usually used because it is not practically possible to use all keywords on the webpages. Hence, by using the meta keywords that do not find their place on the webpage, we increase the chance of the webpages to rank higher. Hence, it is unnecessary to use all the meta keywords on the webpages.
Organic SEO Myth #5 – Website Should Be Optimized for Long-Tail Keywords
Long-tail keywords are not very popular, whether with the organic SEO companies or searchers. Since they are not competitive, no body searches for them, ranking for them is simple. However, it doesn’t make sense to rank higher for keywords that are not very popular or competitive in the organic SEO industry.
Some Common Myths Related to an SEO Company
Some Common Myths Related to an SEO Company
There are many myths related to SEO and SEO company. Some of them are so common that many online marketers take them to be true and stick to the misconceptions. ROI being the prime matter of consideration, the webmasters ignore the SEO myths and look for the best SEO company that can help them generate revenue out of their online business. Here are some of the common myths about the SEO company
The Best SEO Company can Guarantee top 10 Ranking
There are many SEO companies that promise top 10 rankings for their clients and persuade them to hire their services. Some of the online marketers are also in the misconception that hiring one of the best SEO companies can make their way to top rankings on the search engine result pages. But the truth is the rankings are the rewards by the search engines given to a website considering their quality and usability for the users. Hence, while making your decision about selecting an SEO service provider make sure that you go by the past performance record of the company not by the promises.
Once the top Rank is Achieved it Lasts for Ever
It is still a popular misconception among the webmasters that once they achieve top rankings on the search engine result pages it will last for ever. The SEO service providers discover and implement latest techniques so as to retain the positions on the SERPs.
More the number of Inbound Links, Higher is the Page Rank and SERP Rankings
The secrets of quality inbound links are still unknown to many SEO companies. Some SEO service providers go on building links without considering the quality of the links; where as the major search engines give priority to quality, not quantity. If you are hiring an SEO company ensure that they give importance to links from reputed and relevant sites. Avoiding any spammy technique of link building is equally important if you want to avoid any penalty by the search engines.
More traffic Means More Conversion Rate
Many webmaster foster the misconception that more number of traffic can result in higher conversion rate. It is not true always. If your SEO Company promises you to generate more traffic, make sure that they are talking about niche traffic. Achieving high rankings in search engines and generating more traffic are two different aspects. You may get high ranks on SERPs and get more online visitors to your website, but it is difficult to say that it can increase your conversion rate.
SEO Service Provider Can Guarantee Conversation Rate
No SEO company can guarantee increased conversion rate on the website they are optimizing as it is basically dependent on the webmasters and the quality of services they are providing. Of course, the best SEO company can ensure you getting most target traffic by reaching out to the niche audience.
Once you are aware of the truth about the SEO companies, you can take informed decision while selecting an SEO service provider.
