Are you hoping to earn some decent money via the internet? Are you looking for a person or company to build you a website? Are you looking into ways to promote your website? Would you like to see an increase in traffic to your website? These are all questions to which a couple of years ago I would have answered yes to. I now have built up a network of people who I always use to help me in these particular fields.

In my opinion it is very important to establish a network of contacts on the internet. These people should be honest, charge a fair price, be willing to help and give advice and be happy to work quickly with good communication.

A few years ago I started to develop an interest in the web and thought that it would be a superb way to promote my speech coaching business. I must admit that at this point I knew nothing about the ins and outs of the net and did not know anybody who could build or promote a website.

I spent quite a long time phoning people who were advertising in places such as the yellow pages, the newspaper and of course the internet itself. The prices some of these people quoted were a lot higher than I could afford. I now have come to realise that these prices were basically a rip off as I have now met some brilliant web designers who are happy and willing to build a website at far cheaper rates.

As an example a contact of mine now builds me a type of information portal site for £150 plus free lifetime hosting. An example of one of these websites is at increase-pagerank.com. I have been working with this contact now for a number of years and he is extremely reliable and has taught me a lot about how the web works etc.

I have also met other contacts who are experts in website promotion. I have learnt a lot from these people and would now like to think of myself as some kind of expert. I now think that I know quite a lot about how to promote and a market a website. I have around eighty sites myself, which I constantly attempt to attract more visitors to each of them.

The way I attract this additional traffic is by attempting to build up the amount of one-way backward links to each site. One way of doing this of course is by writing articles like the one you are reading. This writing can be quite tiresome but there are sites such as articles-submission.com, who are happy to help you with this project.

In conclusion, be careful not to pay over the odds for web design, web marketing or web promotion. Meet and build up a network of web experts who you can learn to trust and establish a long term business relationship with.

A sudden string of murders with social networking websites as the common thread running through them gives one the feeling of a cuddly baby suddenly becoming a cold blooded murderer. Social networking websites had come to be regarded as the ultimate fun places spreading love, friendship and camaraderie among its members; where else could one befriend or revive old relationships as on a social networking site. No wonder it became the ‘in’ thing to be a part of one group or the other and break out in gay abandon telling all about oneself including private info into these sites. What was apparently lost in the new found euphoria was the simple fact that these were mere information platforms and accessible not only to angels but also to perverts and predators.The risk of revealing personal info on the internet first became evident when scamsters would use the personal account number of unsuspecting victims in what is called as a ‘phishing’operation and drain off their bank accounts.. Mercifully such security breaches stopped with monetary frauds and did not cause physical harm or loss to life.

The death of Ashley Hall illustrates the typical trust or the sense of belonging that unsuspecting members have to their groups which made her lower her guard and walk directly into the jaws of death. In other cases involving social networking sites Wayne Forrester and Brian Lewis kill their wives on the basis of what they learn about them in these sites.

While one cannot deny the role of the social networking sites totally in these gruesome killings, it would be unfair to paste the blame squarely on them. It is simple common sense that the info that one posts in these sites are just a click away to anybody wishing to have them and there could be perverts and predators out there waiting to exploit the situation and one needs to be wary of posting info or making personal contacts with strangers whom they know only through these portals.

Social networking can bring “huge financial benefits” to website optimisation, according to online experts.

With a worldwide Facebook audience in excess of 350 million users and Twitter growing at a reported rate of 1,382 per cent, SEO specialists at a recent round table discussion in Manchester organised by the website hosting company UKFast admitted that their marketing campaigns now focused heavily on linking content across numerous social networking sites.

Their revelations follow computer maker Dell’s recent announcement that it generated .5 million (£4 million) through sales of PCs, software applications and accessories using Twitter.

In addition, the furnishing retailer Habitat used messages posted on the Twitter social networking website to promote its furniture sales in June last year.

Speaking to the Financial Times, Manish Mehta, vice-president of social media and community at Dell, described social media outreach as “a natural extension” of the company’s interaction with the internet.

The microblogging site was identified as a primary traffic driver to company websites and an “essential form of free, immediate advertising”.
With focused and plentiful content still high on the priority list for SEO in 2010, distributing it across a number of different sites was believed to be vital for improving search rankings and creating quality links to company websites.

“The way Google is approaching search at the moment it is all about universal search,” said panellist and website marketing specialist Terry Heffernan.

He explained that as search returns now included news and video footage and maps, plus directory and business listings, the first natural SEO listings are often suppressed down the page.

Therefore, it makes sense to optimise across social networking channels to maximise exposure, he said.

Ultimately it was the combination of specialist content and an ongoing stream of visitors enhanced through social networking sites which was believed to be a vital component in lead generation.

Speed was also identified as an important aspect of SEO in 2010.

Already recognised by Google’s Matt Cutts as an increasing focus for search rankings, the panel confirmed that the delivery of content was thought to be as increasingly important as the content itself.

Social Networking Websites: Marketing Opportunity for the Student or University

The Value of Social Networking from the Perspective of the University

It shouldn’t come as any surprise that the members of the graduating class of 2011 are more technologically savvy than most admissions and recruitment officers. After all, most freshman-age students in the US—young adults that were born around 1990—have been around computers all their lives.

Many college age students have been using social networking sites for some time now: Myspace with 130 million users, and Facebook with 12 million users. Towards the end of 2006, in an attempt to capitalize on the direct interaction with prospective students that these social networking portals offer, colleges and universities began launching marketing campaigns within these social networks. The results have been mixed.

In a cynical article entitled “Yada Yada Nada?” Robert Sevier makes a few interesting points that go against using social networking sites in order to market on behalf of higher education:

Observation # 1: It’s about quality, not quantity. Big numbers attract attention, but the reality is this: As a college or university, you are interested in only a very, very small percentage of that big number. The challenge, of course, is sifting out the small percentage of students and others that are interested in your message in a way that is effective and efficient. So far, no college has cracked the code.

Observation #3: Members are very wary of the encroachment of business into what they define as personal, literally “my,” space.

Observation #4: You cannot control content. Colleges love to control the content of their messages. However, on social networking sites they cannot. In fact, many social networks are fueled by member-created content in which members opine, respond, and react to the world around them.

Mr. Sevier’s points are valid, but the fact remains—and Sevier admits as much—that the amount of people that use social networking sites make “cracking the code”, or coming up with an appealing way to market to prospective students within these social networks, extremely appealing.

The Value of Social Networking from a Student’s Perspective

Last week, the New York Times ran an article that described how a soon-to-be NYU freshman—Monique Yin—created the Facebook group “NYU 2011” with a short description: “Join this group if you are attending NYU next fall.” As of last week, the group had over 650 members.

Monique isn’t alone in her endeavor, colleges and universities across the country have similar “2011” groups—larger schools even have more than one. From a student’s perspective , the benefits of social networking are obvious: students have the opportunity to meet other freshman before the first day of class, making the transition from high school to college less painful.

A Middle Ground?

The difficult part for colleges, as Sevier points out, is the fact that schools don’t have the ability to control the content that is displayed on these sites. To address this, some colleges have come up with their own social networking sites that allow them to access and change content. On the one hand, this may seem like a win-win for colleges and universities, but on the other hand, students tend to stay away from controlled sites.

At this point it still isn’t possible to determine how and when colleges and universities will “crack the code” to using social networking sites in order to market to prospective students. The fact that so many students use these sites, however, makes it certain that schools will keep on trying.

Secret #1- Social means both talking and listening. Listening is just as important as talking

When you interact on a forum or leave comments on a blog, you first read what the other person wrote and then you comment. If you constantly leave comments about yourself and don’t interact and comment off-topic, you will make a bad first impression.  Other members will ignore you.

This same philosophy applies when you are first introduced to people. You want to learn about them and ask questions. How can you learn about a person if you are constantly talking about yourself? Pay attention, listen and ask appropriate questions according to the conversation topic.

Secret #2- Widgets that instantly find thousands of followers don’t always give the best return on investment

Social media gurus always tout the benefits of handy widgets that automate Facebook and Twitter followers. Do you realize that the 5,000 people you just added probably won’t be interested in your products or services? You just wasted time and money adding people who don’t care about what you’re pitching.

Use this same social media approach when you attend networking events and collect business cards. Don’t just pitch your products/services to just anyone you meet. Talk to people who might actually benefit from what you offer. It doesn’t make sense to attend a networking event filled with seniors if you are a nightclub owner whose target audience is 21 year-old college students.

Secret #3- Freebies don’t always mean more subscribers, BUT worthwhile freebies make all the difference

Freebies don’t always mean instant success. Contests don’t always draw thousands of new members to your site either.  In the social media world, if you make your prize too abstract or unappealing, you will drive away visitors.

This social media tactic also applies to freebies offered in the offline world. If you attend networking events and conduct raffles or contests, make your prizes worthwhile for guests. Target your audience and get inside their heads. You want your guests to actually use the product or service you’re giving away.

•    How will this freebie benefit the contest winner?

•    Will this freebie make them contact me for more services or products?

Secret #4- Don’t scare away others with the “me me me” syndrome

If you start every blog comment or tweet with “I did” or “I want” then you are headed down the “me me me” syndrome path.  Social media is all about helping others. Being an expert in your field doesn’t mean acting like an egomaniac.

If you start every networking conservation with “I” you will be met with glazed over expressions. Don’t be surprised when people make excuses to leave the conversation. Remember the “social” in social media and apply that to your offline conversations. Social means give and take – social doesn’t mean a one-sided, it’s all about me conversation.

Secret #5- Always use professional Net-iquette

Don’t come across as rude or condescending in your Facebook or Twitter updates. You never know who will come across your updates in the cyber world, and how it can come back to haunt you.

This tip should always be applied to offline networking. Always remember to practice professional, ethical etiquette whenever you meet new people. Think before you speak, and remember that you represent your company/business. First impressions make a lasting impression, so always put your best face forward.

I realize that for adults on the social networking sites, many of these tips are common sense. As I point that out, I also know that nothing is “common” about common sense. The tips are not listed in order of importance. Here they are!…..

1.) Decide on the type of networking you would like to engage in.

Most people that are new to social networking are nor aware that different sites cater to different groups of networkers. Some sites are for people in particular age groups, others are for people with specifics hobbies and interests. Still other sites cater almost exclusively to business networking. Before you join a site, spend some time getting a sense of what type of networking is most popular. For the newbie to the networks, MySpace and Facebook are good choices. Generally, these sites have wide appeal to a large cross section of networkers with a wide variety of interests.

2.) Have A Plan When Putting Together Your Profile

Virtually all social networking sites provide members with a personal profile page. Unfortunately, many people spend very little time planning the content to be included in their profile.

WRONG!
Remember, people will usually review your profile before deciding if they want to contact you. The information that you supply can attract quality networking opportunities. Let people know, via your profile, exactly what type of online relationships you want to pursue. Answer ALL profile questions honestly, with no hidden agendas. Oh, and by the way, include your picture. People want to “see” fellow networkers!

3) Let The Online Relationship Develop Naturally

One of the biggest mistakes made by social networkers is to “force” their agenda on new contacts. This type of selfishness does not work in the offline world, so why would it EVER work online? Become acquainted with your contacts first. Let them know that you intend to be a useful resource. During this process of getting to know each other, both of you will discover if you have mutual intentions. Do not rush this process of discovery. It could provide the foundation for a very beneficial, long term, relationship.

4) Do Not Get Too Personal Too Quickly

This tip is in the ‘common sense” category, and is similar to tip #3. Personal experiences have prompted me to include this tip. I have been contacted by individuals, and within the 1st EMAIL, they are disclosing very personal information, even inviting me to come meet them!! This approach is dangerous and leaves a bad 1st impression. It is a definite “red flag” if individuals give you “too much information” too soon.

5) Do Not “Hit And Run!”

 

Many people make the mistake of joining too many social sites. In their excitement to begin networking, they fill out profiles to every site under the sun! These same individuals spend very little time navigating each site. They will also make the mistake of adding a bunch of “friends” at first, and never following up with them. This “hit and run” approach is not a good way to form online relationships. Only become a member of a site if you plan to become an active member of the community. Without active participation, you will never achieve trust within the group.

Hopefully, these tips, and your common sense, will make social networking more productive.
