Adwords Marketing – How to Optimize Your Landing Page to Get More Conversions

You earn money when a visitor converts. Until your visitors convert you are spending money. No matter what your conversion is, either sell a product or collect and email address, you want a visitor to take that action. Your landing page must convince the visitor to convert. The following are several ways which you can increase the conversions of your landing page.
* Do research.
Build your landing to speak to your ideal visitor. Keep everything the page geared toward that ideal visitor. A landing page trying to capture a broad spectrum of visitor attention is destined to get a lower conversion rate.
* The headline is important.
Your landing page headline is perhaps the most important marketing message your landing page can have. You can be guaranteed that almost every visitor will read your headline, even if they read nothing else. Grab their attention with the headline.
* Match the landing page to your AdWords Ad.
Having your keyword in the landing page headline will get the visitors attention. It will tell the visitor the page is relevant to what they searched for. This will increase you chances of the visitor remaining on your page and reading the rest of your sales copy, and converting.
You can use Adwords Dynamic Keyword Insertion to pass the search term to your landing page as a querystring parameter. This will allow a dynamically generated landing page to use the visitors search term in the headline and sales copy.
* Give the visitor only one option, the option to convert.
Remove any navigation links, outbound links and advertisments from your landing page. Make sure the visitor doesn’t get distracted by some other link or message. You want to them to convert, and only convert. This means keep your message to a single page.
* Remove unecessary graphics or features.
Again, you don’t want to distract potential customers from your message. Get rid unneeded graphics, CSS or javascripts. Keep your message simple and focused. Removing unecessary elements should also increase the page loading time. You don’t want to lose a potential conversion because your page was too slow to load.
* Give the visitor every opportunity to convert.
Don’t have only one conversion link or form at the bottom of your page. Make sure your visitor doesn’t have to search for the conversion opportunity. Popup windows and DHTML windows provide great ways to attract attention and convert.
* Use Testimonials
Consumers like Testimonials from third parties. For some visitors, Testimonials may be more persuasive than your sales copy. When collecting testimonials you can write the copy yourself and simply ask the Testimonial giver to agree with it.

Generally website is used for business promotion, product sale, online services etc. It is a business strategy to develop own site and market it to reach out large number of audiences to visit site and convert these visitors to buy the product or avail the services. Now a days so many methods to promote the website such as search engine optimization, Social media Marketing, Local search Optimization and online marketing to increase the traffic to a site from search engine and other social media networks. All these marketing efforts for reaching target audience. Search engine optimization only influence organic search result of search engines. Activities of SEO are alteration on website, using design elements and web content. Main SEO strategies are on-page and off page optimization methods to improve search engine ranking.
To Make successful SEO on website requires proficiency in the areas of research and planning, analysis, creating dynamic quality content and Basic concept of HTML. On page activities are important in SEO to optimize entire elements of the website. The activities of on page optimization are:-
(a) Keyword research :- Keyword selection is therefore crucial and has implications for so much else within search. Keyword is one of the most important elements of any website. It must match the words and phrases that potential visitors will use when searching for the website. To ensure that keywords are effective and also need to spend some time to learn and test which keywords work best for the website.
(b) Meta Tags. First writing the title, description and keyword Meta tags. The site title tag is the most important Meta tag. The site title Meta tag is still read and indexed by all the major engines. The site description should tell the engine about the theme of the web site. It is recommended that this is done in not more than 200 characters including spaces.
(c) Prepare dynamic quality content – Content is believed to be increasingly important by many in the SEO field. Fresh content with target keywords of the site attract spiders to crawl the site and also helps to good position on SERP.
(d) Image optimization (Alt tag). Search engines can read the alt tags that accompany images. Every relevant image should have an alt tag and this tag should be written to comply with your keyword objectives.
(e) Create internal links. Inbound links are important for two reasons. Firstly, their content is highlighted with a hyperlink and this is given special emphasis by the search engines and secondly it is a way of ensuring the engines can navigate and deep crawl into a site.
(f) Include keywords in title, Header tags, Meta tags and content of the web pages.
(g) Submit website URL to primary search engines for indexing the site.
(h) Creation and submission of sitemap and robot.txt on google, yahoo and Bing.
(j) Profile creation and activation of Webmaster tools of Google, Yahoo and Bing and web Analytics.
Off page optimization. Activities of Off page optimization improve website’s search result ranking. Some of the off page techniques are directory Submission, Link Building, Article writing and Submission, Press release, Social Book Marking, Social media Networking etc. These techniques and optimization methods target large number of audiences which bring quality traffic to your website. Press release, blogging, forum post and Article submission helps to get a back links to your website which increase the link popularity of the website as well.

Facebook pages are one of the best ways of promoting a website or making a business or cause popular through its medium. People are unaware about search engine optimization through Facebook, what most people do is concentrate on building their fan network. Search Engine optimization can go hand to hand with Facebook in many ways, it can make pages more popular and they can be found very easily in the search engine results. Before starting with Search Engine Optimization people should determine what the topic is and relevant keywords that can be used by people to look for that topic on search engines. This process is called keyword research or can also be termed as keyword analysis.
That is, if the Facebook page is about Chocolates Made in Belgium, the keywords that need to emphasized are ‘Belgium Chocolates’, and the more popular keywords what you would probably use when looking for chocolates like ‘best Belgium chocolates’, ‘buy Belgium chocolates’, ‘buy Belgium chocolates online’. Once the targeted keywords are decided then the next step is to work on the normal search engine optimization strategy. The Facebook page title should be very relevant and should include the targeted keywords in title. If the title is keyword rich then it’s “like a cherry on the cake”. It helps both the ways for people who look for the topic on the Facebook search as well as in the search engines. The title should be able to describe what the page topic is; it should be relevant at the same time it should be inclusive of keywords. It is the initial step towards creating optimized Facebook page.
Facebook gives the permission to choose the web address of the fan page, it automatically creates a URL but it can be modified as per a person’s own choice, if in case you feel something else could benefit you more. The web address should be kept sweet and simple, as it helps people to remember it and they can access it directly the next time without searching for it. The web address should be inclusive of the topic as it helps in the process of optimization, if it’s relevant and includes the keywords it can give you a extra boost in the rankings. URL always plays a major role if your result is in the top 10 search results; it gives you minor advantage which can give major effect if all the other factors are in your favor.
The ‘about’ tab is inclusive of description, it can be given the value of the ‘description meta-tag’. This tab should be used to type several different phrases which are rich in keywords. One can also add a link to ones website or the other relevant content of the cause, business or services. The info tab is supposed to be used to write the information about the company, its main areas of expertise and certifications. You should add the company web address to info tab. The two text spaces should be used to write keyword rich content. Now the page is ready and running, all it needs is fuel which in the SEO terms is back-links. For any webpage to be successful back-links are required they play one of the major roles in search engine optimization. Search engines see links coming from quality websites as recommendations, Building inbound links is a important part of any optimization campaign.

How to Search Engine Optimize (seo) a Website

This article is a follow-up to my last entry about search engine optimization (or SEO), which you can find here on Articlesbase. While the first article provided a broad overview of what SEO is and how it can help you market your business, this one is meant to provide a more detailed outline of how the process works and some of the tasks you should perform in order to optimize a site. My intended audience for this article is web design firms and marketing companies who are looking to break into the world of SEO, but need a primer to help them get started.
Getting Started
There is one key piece of information to keep in mind throughout the entire optimization process, and it can be said like this: Search engines have one goal, and that is to return the most relevant results for any given search query. SEO is essentially the process of ensuring that those search engines understand that your site or your client’s site is, in fact, a good, relevant result for certain queries. For example, if you or your client owns a coffee shop in Philadelphia, then their website is absolutely a relevant result for the query “Philadelphia coffee shops”. However, the search engine algorithms can’t determine the relevance of a given page on their own if the site isn’t properly optimized. Let’s take a look at the key steps that are involved in optimizing a site, thus allowing the search engines to realize, “oh! This is a very relevant result for the query I was given”.
Choosing Your Primary Keywords and Phrases
Choosing the primary keywords and phrases which you will be optimizing for is one of the most important pieces of SEO. You need to find what I call a “middleground” keyword – something that’s not so broad that it’s useless to optimize for, but not so specific that no one is searching for it.
Consider a client who asks you to optimize for the phrase “real estate”. With very few exceptions, this is a perfect example of a keyword that is simply too broad to be worthwhile. Anyone searching for “real estate” will immediately realize that they need to refine their search beyond such a broad term. For example – are they looking to buy real estate, sell it, invest in it, or find a real estate agent? And are they looking for commercial properties or residential properties? To buy or to rent?
It should be immediately clear that optimizing for such a broad term is almost always a wasted effort. Not only because the optimization process itself will be excessively difficult, but because, more than likely, the traffic generated will not result in any sales ( “conversions”).
Now, let’s assume your client is ABC Real Estate in Bala Cynwd, PA, and they are residential real estate agents specializing in the Philadelphia market. They might ask you to optimize for “ABC Real Estate Bala Cynwd”. This is an example of a keyword that’s incredibly simple to optimize for (I probably wouldn’t even call it “optimization” since there is only one ABC Real Estate in Bala Cynwd, pretty much guaranteeing you the #1 result), but this keyword is almost useless for driving new traffic to the site. People searching for the company name already know about the company and probably know what the company does. You want to drive traffic from people who are searching for a product or service the company offers, even when the potential customer doesn’t know about the company yet.
“Homes for sale in Philadelphia” is a keyword to think about in this instance. We know from this query that the person performing the search is looking for homes for sale in Philadelphia. Our client is prepared to provide not only home search capability, but real estate agents who are willing to help the searcher in their quest for a new home. This is the kind of traffic you want to drive to the site. You should choose 2-3 similar keyword phrases to serve as the primary search goals. It’s important to note that your site will not be locked into appearing for only those phrases, if you perform the optimization correctly. Now, let’s take a look at how you actually go about doing that.
Site Structure
The first thing to look at when tasked with optimizing a site is the structure of the site itself – the HTML code, the URL/link structure, and the title and meta tags. If the site doesn’t exist yet, but you will need it to be optimized once it’s built, this section still very much applies, so read on.
Navigation
One of the most common problems I see with poorly-optimized sites is a navigation system that is effectively invisible to search engines. Oftentimes, the main navigation was created with javascript or flash, and no alternative sitemap or links are provided. While search engines such as Google are getting much better at identifying links embedded in javascript and flash, it is still a much better idea to provide a plain HTML/CSS based navigation system. You can do this without sacrificing any of the javascript or flash functionality or changing the user experience at all, so there is no reason not to do it. If your navigation is javascript based, make sure you are using a “pure CSS” menuing system, meaning that you can code your navigation as if it were a normal
or based menu, but the script will transform these tags into javascript-powered dropdown menus. Some of the menuing systems we use at Context are: Superfish, OpenCube, and SmartMenu. If your navigation is flash based, you can use a dynamic flash publishing script (see swfobject) that will transparently replace the HTML-based navigation with your flash element. In both of these cases, the search engines will see the original HTML and CSS based navigation elements, which are much easier to traverse and index than their javascript or flash-based counterparts.
A Note about flash based sites
If your site is done completely in flash, you may want to re-think your design, instead using flash for a header, footer, and/or borders, but leaving the main content as HTML and CSS. Otherwise, I recommend essentially building two full versions of the site – one in HTML and one in Flash. As I mentioned above, search engines are becoming much more effective at indexing flash pages, but you are still doing yourself a disservice in terms of SEO if your site is 100% flash based. Also, completely flash driven sites can often degrade user experience, but that’s a topic for another article.
URL Structure
Now let’s talk about URLs. Search engines like very clean URLs, the kind you see at the top of this (or any Wordpress-based) blog. Even if your site is driven by dynamic content, you will want to rewrite your URLs to look like static pages. For example, rather than having /product-view.php?fromcat=5&id=32, you will want a url that looks more like /products/32/this-is-the-product-name.html. Not only is the actual URL part of what search engines look at when determine what a page might be about (which is why we include the product name), they also have a much easier time indexing static URLs as opposed to complicated dynamic URLs with a string of variables at the end. There are many ways to accomplish the rewriting, and it’s usually not very difficult. The easiest way is to use Apache’s mod_rewrite module, which lets you transparently redirect one URL to another, while the visitor only sees the original. If you are using ASP.net on IIS, there is an excellent rewrite module for IIS6, and IIS7 has built-in rewriting capabilities. Finally, development frameworks such as Fuse for PHP or Ruby on Rails have extensive “routing” functionality which allows very fine grained control over the URL structure.
Title and Meta Tags
The and description tags are very important in SEO. These tags are your first chance to explain to a search engine what your site is all about, and you should follow some guidelines when generating these tags:
The title and meta description tags should include your primary keywords and phrases, but only once. Don’t repeat “Philadelphia coffee shop” five times in the title tag, because the search engines will penalize the site for keyword stuffing.
While there are no strict rules on length, the title tag should be no longer 60-80 characters, the meta tag around 200 maximum.
The title and meta tags need to be different for every page. Even if the title or meta description tags for some pages don’t actually include your primary search phrases (and they don’t have to), they should be clear and relevant to every individual page.
Content
It is a common SEO adage that “content is king”, and although the SEO process has gotten a bit more complex over the years, it is still largely true.
Your site should contain as much useful, unique content as possible. Simply plastering bits of text all over the site won’t do you much good, but the best thing you can do to optimize a site is to provide high quality content that people actually want to see or read. Developing such content can be tricky, but here are some basic guidelines:
Every page should have at least two paragraphs of relevant content. There are some exceptions here because some pages simply don’t require any text, but you should try to work in as much high quality, relevant (remember: HIGH QUALITY and RELEVANT) textual content as possible.
Don’t rely exclusively on bulleted lists. Bulleted lists are fine and won’t hurt your positioning, but they should be augmented by rich prose, since larger bodies of text will net you the most gains in terms of SEO.
Include your targeted search keywords and phrases in the content, but don’t “stuff” keywords by repeating them more times than is reasonable. There is a balancing act to be performed here, but as a general rule, I try not to include the same keyword or phrase more than once per two paragraphs. There are plenty of exceptions, however, so it’s something that you have to develop a knack for after some trial and error.
Your home page is the holy grail of content for your site. Every single website only gets one home page, so the content there is weighed very heavily by search engines. Make sure your home page content is of a decent length (at least 2 paragraphs), contains your primary keywords and phrases (gracefully – don’t keyword stuff), and is well written and relevant.
Include as much content on as many different pages as you can. Remember, though: high quality and relevant. Don’t create pages for the sake of having more pages – think about information that will be relevant to your potential customers and provide it through your website. For example, if you are optimizing for a coffee shop in Philadelphia, a page dedicated to how to identify & choose the best coffee beans might be a great resource. Oftentimes, you will be surprised and unable to predict some of the keywords and phrases that drive people to your site, but these relevant “landing pages” ensure that you can pick up good traffic that you weren’t necessarily expecting.
Inbound Link Building
Another essential piece of the SEO puzzle is getting other sites to link back to yours. There are several ways to do this, but also some pitfalls to avoid.
Directory submission – this is the process of simply adding your site to online directories that list and link to external sites. There are a few important things to remember when submitting your site to directories, however:
There are a lot of good free directories that do not require a reciprocal link. Don’t get caught up paying for every submission (though there are some directories that are worth paying for).
Make sure that the directory itself is in good standing with Google. You will want to check its Page Rank (Google’s 1/10 score of the importance of a site). The easiest way to check page rank is to install the Google Toolbar
Make sure the directory links directly to your site and doesn’t first go to a tracking page. If the link is not direct, it is essentially useless.
Try to find directories that allow you to specify the anchor text – the text that people will be clicking on to get to your site. Make the anchor text one of your primary keyword phrases, e.g. the words “Philadelphia coffee shop” should link to philacoffeeshopsite.com.
Press release distribution – Your client should have press releases that outline the current happenings at their company. These should be posted as text (instead of or in addition to PDF) format both on the website, but also on aggregate press release sites that allow you to submit your own press release. You should also include links back to your site directly in the press release
Social Networking & web 2.0 – There are many sites available that allow you to post your own business profiles on the web. Hotfrog and Merchantcircle are good examples of such sites, and I recommend adding a listing there for any site you are optimizing. Additionally, if you have interesting, relevant content to share with the public, consider posting it to aggregate sites such as Digg
Conclusion
Hopefully this article provided insight into the SEO process, and can act as a “getting started” primer for companies who are looking to expand their services offerings. I do not recommend that business owners attempt to optimize their own site, because you will not get the results you expect, and your time is better spent running the business. Hire a competent SEO company instead, and work with them to position your site for ideal keywords and phrases.

Before going into production on any website, search engine optimization needs to be considered as it is more effectively implemented during the initial design phase of a website. It is much more difficult to optimize, well modify, an existing website for the search engines than it is to optimize a new website to be search engine friendly.
Since starting from scratch is the best way to go with your Spanish (Generation Equis targeted) website, it is best to have search engine optimization planned and implemented from the beginning of the website development stage.
Keep in mind that close to ten percent of all online searches in the United States are conducted in Spanish, while less than one company out of fifty-thousand has listed their keywords in Spanish.
Does this sound like an opportunity? English and Spanish search engines offer free targeted organic traffic so an Internet user can easily find what they are looking for. In most cases the more time your website is listed with a search engine, the better placement that your website will receive. Better placement results in more visitors!
Best of all, with the right planning and search engine optimization they will find your website first. Why? Because your website is at the top of the search engine results and that will bring your website more visitors. How often do you go to page 2 or 3 of your web search results to find what you are looking for? Not likely very often, unless you are looking for your own website.
The key strategies to consider while optimizing your website for the search engines are:
•Web Crawler Friendly Design: Just like targeting the general Internet population, your Generation Equis site still needs to have the same crawl friendly design of a traditional website; you still need an error free site, a robots.txt file and an XML sitemap.
•Using Keywords: Your domain name, tags, links, images and content must be keyword rich with both English and Spanish keywords that will attract Generation Equis visitors to your site. You must also consider culturally significant keywords such as; Hispanic, Latino and Latina as well as accents as they will truly set you apart from other Spanish websites.
•Search Engine Submission: Manual submission to the major English search engines and directories will help drive traffic to your website. It is imperative that you submit your site to the Spanish search engines as well. Finally, keep in mind that the major English websites such as; Google, MSN, Lycos and Alta Vista also have Spanish websites that require a separate submission for your Spanish site.

The first step in the search engine optimization process is ensuring that your web developer, whether you are wearing that hat or your site is being built by an employee or contractor, builds a search engine friendly website.
Similar to a traditional English website, your Spanish website should be built free of coding errors, contain a robots.txt file and an XML sitemap. After all, if the search engines cannot fully access your website, due to design or implementation errors, you will be penalized by the search engines resulting in a lower ranking in the search engines, or no ranking at all, and less visitors to your website. If Generation Equis is not able to locate your pages, what is the point of investing time and money in search engine optimization?
There are ample tools available to validate HTML or scripting as well as tools and programs that will verify your robots.txt file. HTML or scripting languages such as PHP are the programming languages used to build most websites. A Robots.txt file is a simple text file in your main web directory that generally has a link to your sitemap so the search engines can find it and it also tells the search engines which website pages that they should or should not index and present to the public.
An XML sitemap is an index of all of the individual pages contained in your website that assists the search engines in indexing your site’s content. There are plenty of programs available to create an XML sitemap which will even update your sitemap automatically hourly, daily, and weekly, etc to reflect any changes to your site depending on how they are configured.
After setting up your sitemap, your developer should also set up a “cron job” that will ping, or notify, the major search engines each time that your sitemap is updated so they can return and re-index your site to reflect any recent changes.
Using Keywords
Have you ever searched for something on a major search engine like Google, Yahoo or MSN and noticed that there were millions of websites that matched the terms that you searched for? As you know, although Generation Equis has migrated to the Internet in a similar fashion as mainstream America has, it seems as though Corporate America has been a late adopter and is still struggling to reach out to Generation Equis online. Online marketing to Hispanics is almost an untapped market wide open for the taking!
Corporate America, and top Internet marketers, may have a monopoly on the majority of the common English keywords with the major English search engines. They are most often listed on the first page of those millions of pages of results that are returned for any given search string. On a positive note, Spanish keywords and Spanish search engines are still wide open for the taking. Not only are Spanish keywords used less often on the web thereby giving you an opportunity to receive good SERP (Search Engine Results Placement) but they are often erroneously used due to poor translations of English to Spanish, special characters and accents.
Keywords are a single word or phrase you establish which are the right words or phrases that people would think of when searching the major search engines for your business, product, or service. It is believed that a big component of the secret algorithm that search engines use when indexing your site and deciding where to rank your website in search results is your domain name.
Some people ask what is so important about a domain name. Many of our English website clients have told us that they thought if you register the shortest, catchiest domain name or having your company’s name in your web address that you do not have to market your website and the sales will start trickling in.
We have also had people tell us that they have heard about the seven figure plus price tags that the sale of domains like Drugs.com and CreditCard.com brought in so they want to register a bunch of short and catchy domain names and just sell them in a few years for millions and retire.
The truth is that the very few high yielding domains that sold for millions of dollars were initially registered decades ago by early adopters to the Internet. A few years back, pre-recession, We remember more than a few colleagues making six, and in some cases seven, figure profits off of houses they bought only ten years ago. Recent events have proved that those days are over. As far as short and catchy English domains go, good luck finding one and even if you do, you will still need to market your website. Contrary to what you may hear some people say; traffic, or website visitors, does not just appear out of nowhere.
Now do not get discouraged about finding a good domain name for your Spanish site because if you remember Corporate America has not really jumped on the Spanish web development bandwagon yet and neither have most of the domain name speculators; AKA squatters; or web developers. Your focus on Generation Equis should allow you to register a short and catchy Spanish domain that you may even be able to make a little money off of someday when the majority of Corporate America jumps on the Generation Equis bandwagon.
Adding your company’s name to your website really depends on the nature of your business and the goals of your website. In some cases you need to use your company name in your website so your current customers can find you and you can protect your brand. In a lot of cases, people are using the Internet to drive incremental sales by marketing to new customers and prospects. If that is the case you just need to keep in mind that if they are going to search for a website with your company name in it they probably will not be new customers.
We generally tell customers, depending on their goals, that the key to finding a great domain is identifying an available domain that is rich in keywords related to their product or service. In the absence of needing to brand your company by using a web address with your company name in it to achieve your goals, why not use a keyword rich domain that will help with your placement in the search engines and new customers can associate with your products or services.
Using effective keywords during the design of your site is also a critical piece of search engine optimization. The first step in using effective keywords is keyword research. This is where your bilingual web developer, a bilingual employee or a bilingual friend can really be an asset. You need to create a list of potential keywords that a customer would search for so they can be translated.
Assuming that you have an English website, try to start your list of potential keywords by looking at the English keywords that have been successful for you and have the keywords properly translated to Spanish. Of course only translate them if the Spanish version would still apply to your business and would be a keyword that Generation Equis users may search for.
Keep in mind that any, and all, translations have to be done by a fully bilingual person. Have you ever used an online translation program to translate something from a foreign language to English only to find that the translation makes no sense at all? You had a better contextual understanding looking at the picture above the foreign language text than you did when the translator software, or program, that you used translated it into English? Translation is just another opportunity for you to excel in your search engine placement. You can rest assured that it is more than likely that some of your competitors made the mistake during the translation process of improperly translating keywords creating yet another opportunity for your website to rank higher in the search engines results.
To get ideas for keywords, go back to your notes, bookmarks, or favorites, and take a look at your competitor’s websites. By right clicking on your competitor’s site and selecting the “view source” option you will be able to see the keywords that they are using in their meta-tags and description tag. Obviously you do not want to copy their keywords and you never want to use their name or an intellectual property protected keyword such as their brand but it may help generate some ideas for your list of potential keywords list by giving your some keyword ideas to expand on.
Sit down with your bilingual web developer, employee or friend and brainstorm all of the words, or sets of words, that you think your customers would use when searching for your products as well as breaking out a thesaurus and looking up applicable synonyms. Then add their culturally and grammatically correct translations to your potential keyword list.
Do not hesitate to also add English keywords to your list of potential keywords as long as they are culturally significant such as; Hispanic, bilingual and Latina and are commonly used by members of Generation Equis. Stay away from using English keywords like the word, “Spanish” or the string, “Spanish shoes” as most Spanish speakers searching for a Spanish website would use the word Espanol, or Español, in their search if they were looking for a Spanish website and if someone searches for, “Spanish shoes” they are most likely looking to buy shoes from Spain on an English website versus searching for a Spanish site that sells shoes or “zapatos” in Spanish.
The Spanish language uses accent marks and special characters in some of their words but not all keyboards support using accents and special characters so it is important to consider adding both versions of Spanish words, with and without the accent, to your list of potential keywords. Proper use of accents may also be a great tool for you to get to the first page of results in the search engines so min your P’s and Q’s or rather mind your ñ’s and Ñ’s.
Now that you have compiled a list of potential keywords, it is time to research their popularity. Their popularity will tell you how often your keywords are searched for in a given time period so you can identify the more popular keywords. This can be done in a couple of ways. Either enter the keywords from your list of potential keywords into the major search engines as well as the Spanish search engines and see how many, what type and which of your competitors sites come up in the results or go the easy route and use a tool specifically designed for this. We recommend using Google Suggest, Overture, or Wordtracker to measure the popularity of your keywords. Be sure to rank each keyword on your list by popularity and keep the forty highest ranked keywords at the top of your list while retaining the others for future advertising campaigns.
With your keyword list in hand it is now time to sit down with the web developer and plan out the keyword placement for your site. A good strategy is to select your top ten ranked keywords to optimize your homepage. When using keywords to optimize a webpage you should focus on keyword density in your tags, headings, links, images and content while avoiding excessive repetition. A good rule of thumb to go by is that if it makes sense when you read it or it is in context, it is not too excessive.
Meta-tags provide information about a given web page, most often to help search engines categorize them correctly. They are hidden in the source code of the web page, do not affect how the page is displayed and are not visible to visitors unless they view the source code of your web page. Meta-tags allow you to insert keywords into the title, description and keywords of your page so they will be indexed by the search engines.
In addition to meta-tags, the alt tags of your web page can be a great place to insert your keywords. Alt tags were developed to present text to visitors when an image does not load and to provide a textual description of an image. Alt tags are somewhat hidden to visitors unless they mouse over the images they are attached to.
Links are also a great location for your keywords. Whether the links are outbound, to other websites, or inbound, to other pages in your website, try to use your keywords if possible when creating your links.
In addition to links, your image files can be a great place to use your keywords. Instead of naming your images logo.jpg or button.jpg try inserting your keywords into your filename. For example our site logo is named GenerationEquisMedia.jpg versus logo.jpg.
This strategy not only gives you better keyword density on your web page, it also optimizes your page for the “image search” that a lot of the major search engines offer.
Content and text are another great venue for keywords. The challenge is providing keyword rich text and content without distracting the user. If your text and content is written with your keywords in mind, it will only help with your placement in the search engine results.
Finally keep in mind that search engines love keywords in the headings and bolded print of your text and content.
Once you have planned how to optimize your homepage, select the individual pages of your site and plan on using three keywords from your top ten ranked keywords list and use three, different when possible, keywords from the remaining top forty ranked keywords list.
The goal is to optimize each page of your site for different keywords thereby increasing the chances of one of your pages being found no matter which of your keywords is searched for.
Search Engine Submission
There are a couple of basic methods you can use to submit your site to the major search engines. You can either submit the home, or index page, of your website or you can submit your XML sitemap. Either way, you need to decide whether you are going to automatically submit your site to the search engines or do so manually.
We always recommend manual submission as it is in some cases better received by the search engine and at times can give you additional drill-down or category information that is not available during automated submission.
Although Generation Equis uses the major English search engines such as Google, Yahoo, and MSN, they also utilize Spanish search engines as well as Spanish versions of the major English search engines.
You cannot stop at just submitting your Spanish site to the major search engines, you also need to submit your site to the Spanish version of the mainstream English search engines such as the Spanish version of Google, Yahoo and MSN.
It is also imperative that you submit your website to the Spanish specific search engines such as; Terra, Mexico Global and Univision.
To properly submit your website to the Spanish specific search engines, you will need a text file with the following information, in Spanish, available to copy and paste into the submission fields:
Title: The title of your website.
Description: The description of your website that you want to appear on the search engine results page.
Categories: Two relevant categories that apply to your website.
Email: An email account that you are open to receiving spam email in. It is not a good idea to use your regular email address.
Directories are another way to freely market and promoteyour site to Generation Equis as well as build quality inbound links to your site that the search engines recognize and reward you for.
Submitting your site to the Spanish directories such as; Hispanic Surf, Top 100 Latino and Busca Pique is another important piece of search engine optimization.
Directory submissions often require a manual submission as well as a complete description so it is important that your bilingual web developer, employee or friend completes the submission on your behalf.

SEO for Facebook…really? Can you truly optimize your business Facebook fan page for search engines? YES!
The first step to optimizing your site for search is to identify the best keywords you should use. Keywords should be selected on the basis of how potential customers who have NEVER heard of your brand name but who NEED your goods/products/services are searching for providers. Keywords are tricky to pick out but with a little help from Google’s keyword tools (insights, trends, sets, etc) you can uncover not only the right words and phrases but the search volume itself. Try and find good keywords and link them to your company name as you choose your Vanity URL.
Make sure your Facebook Page URL represents the identity of your business and your brand. They frown on black hat behaviors so keep it above board and choose a username that represents your brand! Part of the process to get a vanity url is to have 100 fans on your page. Once you get more than 100 fans you can implement this SEO element with Facebook.
Once you have investigated and selected the best keywords and selected your vanity page URL it is time to concentrate on the actual optimization of your Facebook page. Here are some general guidelines for on page optimization:
Add keywords to your “about” box
Place your company website link url in your profile
You can add more than one URL so add your Twitter link, LinkedIn profile link, etc.
Publish interesting content on a regular basis that is related to your products or industry that is not ’salesy’
Use keywords in everything you post if possible
Be social, interact, evoke comments
Add video from YouTube, add photos or products, your store front, etc.
Find links related to your site content.
Put your Facebook page url on your email, newsletter, website, etc.
The “About” text is the place to pack your description with keywords as close to the top of the page as possible. You are limited by the amount of text you can place in her it is still the best place to add custom text. There is a 250 character limit so use keywords in your text and be selective!
The “info” tab is a critical place to include more keywords/phrases as well as your links to your website and other social networks where your brand has a presence. This is essentially where the descriptive metadata for your fan page is pulled by the search engines and really boosts your content score. Facebook has a super high page rank with all the search engines therefore it is critical to have your website on your Facebook page to provide a valuable link. To have your website displayed on your main profile page click access the information box on the left side of your profile page. Click on the yellow pencil and you will be able to edit the box. Check the box “website” for your site to be displayed. Now visitors can go directly to your website. Here are some things to add to this box:
Local Search Information – complete address for a brick and mortar business or city, state, and zip if you work from home or only have PO box.
Company Data – Mission statement, Products, Services, Brands carried
URL – add links to your website, blog, and other social networking personal pages
Facebook lets you create “static FBML” (Facebook Markup Language) boxes and tabs for large volumes of content, images, or video. The more content you have on your page the greater your content density score with Google; however, keep in mind that each tab you create has a separate URL from the search engine perspective. To add a custom tab or box to your page:
In the search box on the top right of your Facebook page type in “static fbml”
You will go to a page of listings. Select the “Static FBML” application button.
A new page will open and on the top left side are two options. Click the “add to my page” icon.
Choose the page where you wish to add the custom content box or tab.
Close the dialog box and go to your Fanpage. Just below your profile photo click “edit Page”
A new page will open. In the application list is the application “FBML 1.” Click on the pencil beside it.
Select “edit”
A new page will open with 2 fields – “Box Title” and “FBML”. Name the box or tab with a Keyword related to the content you will place there. If this will be a Tab Title you will be limited to 10 characters.
Click “save changes”
To return to your application settings page click “edit” at the top of your page.
Click the pencil next to the name you selected for the FBML application and then choose “application settings.”
To add the FBML you just created as a box select “add” next to the “box” option.
To add the FBML you just created as a tab select “add” next to the “tab” option.
Status updates are a great place to post direct links to your website; however, you want to do that judiciously. No one likes to be sold to or constantly pitched. Since Google really likes pages that link to relevant sites, posting relevant related links near the top of your page’s structure are legitimate Google boosters for your Facebook page.
Post the raw URL in the status update frame or use the “attach link” feature. Posting the raw url Facebook automatically links the text to the URL. The resulting anchor text is what it is…you can’t change it; however, the url is linked directly to the destination page and does not have Facebook.com as part of the menu bar on the destination page.
If you use the “attach link” feature Facebook pulls the title, body, and any images from your page and creates a suggested image and text to the side of your page’s link. This is great for increasing your keyword density too by changing the anchor text before “sharing” your link. This link will go through a share url that places the destination url in an iframe that has the Facebook menu bar at the top. It will also include a share feature as well as a place for comments.
Content is still king so what you post beyond URLs can influence your searchability. But highly optimized keyword rich content is useless if it is not interesting and varied. Photos are terrific but add keyword rich captions perhaps with a geo-targeted keyword for additional mojo. Post an event and include text and keywords as well. Create a discussion forum for those events and to discuss brands and product reviews, etc. All the content you share on your Facebook Pages are indexable by search engines.
There are even some offsite things you can do for your Facebook Page. One of these is getting inbound links from you website and vice versa. Reciprocal related linking from related and authoritative websites help your PageRank. Put a Facebook badge or Facebook Fan Box widget on your website to encourage your website followers to link back to your Facebook page. Links from other Facebook pages are also a form of inbound links to your page. The more fans you have the more links you have to your Facebook page thus adding to your “Google go juice.”
Encourage your followers to comment and discuss topics on your page. Get them to “like” content on your page as that links their name back to their profile page thus creating yet another back link. When Google’s spiders see that your fan is commenting on your page as it is indexed Google sees reciprocal links. This type of linking is heavily weighted.
