You’ve possibly heard the saying that without web traffic you’re nobody online! Unfortunately that saying is true, because online traffic is a euphemism (translates) for visitors. Without visitors to your site you’re never going to make the sale. It is clearly illustrated by this scenario; you may have the world’s best invention or product that could literally turn the world upside down overnight but if nobody knows about it, nobody cares about it! Business folklore is peppered with tales of geniuses who died penniless and in squalor (all the while sitting on a goldmine of an invention) just because they couldn’t get the public interested in their product.

As an online entrepreneur you are somewhat in the same dilemma, getting people to that great site of yours:
In a nutshell you need web traffic or your online business is as good as dead! Here’s why:
Traffic = Visitors to your site or blog
Visitors = Potential Buyers
Active Buyers = Profit
Profit = Successful Business
The Various Types of Traffic
There’s web traffic and then there’s web traffic!
Social Media Web Traffic
Fortunately recent changes in internet trends have made it a lot easier to get internet traffic. These changes are due to the widely adopted transition to Web 2.0 and the explosion of social media sites. Web traffic from social media sites is far easier to get than internet traffic from the search engines but the downside is that this type of traffic is not as targeted as online traffic that originates from a typed query into a search engine.
So what exactly do I mean when I say that it is not as targeted?
Well if you’re are to consider a prospect who arrives to your website via a particular keyword query typed into one of the search engines such as Google, that particular action means that such a person is actively seeking more information concerning that topic. Such a visitor to your site is in what I consider a proactive mindset related to that keyword! In other words they are prepared to act upon information associated with that keyword.
Curiosity Prospects
In comparison a visitor arriving from your site from a social media website was most likely drawn there by incidental curiosity. What that means is that that particular visitor probably noticed an intriguing article or post title of yours, with an equally intriguing summary which linked to your site. It was curiosity that led them to your site. Such visitors are what I term Curiosity Prospects! Curiosity Prospects land on your website by accident rather than through active query-word engagement on their part. Such a visitor is less likely to purchase whatever you’re selling because they didn’t arrive with that mindset. This explains the strange phenomenon of link bait pieces that draw hundreds of thousands of visitors with very little conversion rates (i.e., few become buyers).
The Numbers Game
The driving force powering social media websites is captivating information! Riveting articles that literally grab people’s attention by the scruff of the neck! Thus getting any meaningful conversion rate from such Curiosity Prospects depends on a massive flow of traffic! The bottom line is that social media web traffic is a numbers game revolving around link bait; an art that some internet marketers have perfected to precision.
There’s a definite science to writing great link bait pieces, however just like any other article, success of that aspiring link bait piece hinges on the title or headline! When one thinks of social media websites the word that immediately springs to mind (or at least it should) is BUZZ!
BUZZ
A great link bait article has to generate a lot of buzz. In order to do that, the article should:
Stir controversy;
Be Breaking News of significance in whatever field;
Be well written;
Be polarizing;
Captivate or educate the reader;
Be witty or funny;
Be shocking (not disgusting mind you, there is a difference):
Be well formatted;
And lastly, the body text of the article should follow through on the premise of its title in a logical easily graspable step-by-step fashion.
Buzz Transferring Positive SEO Influence
So what, if anything are you getting from that Web 2.0 traffic, if those vast numbers of social media Curiosity Prospects don’t convert into purchasers? Well the plain fact is, the sheer volume of traffic flowing to your website is soon going to get noticed by the search engines which in turn will increase your ranking and positioning on those very same search engines. By its very nature that increased positive attention from the search engines is going to get your website much closer to the holy grail of any online business…tons of web traffic from the search engines!
Organic Search Traffic!
From experience and to my manner of thinking, this is hands down the best kind of web traffic but it is also by far the hardest to attain or get. When I say the best I mean as far as conversion rates go! So what exactly is organic internet traffic? This is that online traffic that originates from a search query conducted on the search engines. Say for example you’re a prospect who is looking to start an online home business what online actions could you take to find out such info? Well it is highly likely that the first thing you would do is query the search engines (such as Google, Yahoo, MSN or Ask.com) with a keyword term that might be any of the following: internet business; internet marketing, home business or online marketing, etc. The returned results for that query are what we refer to as organic listings;which are the websites listed in the Google Index (and the various other search engines). Obviously the higher the website is listed on the Google Index or SERPs (search engine rank pages) the greater the chances of that website being picked by a searcher for the queried keyword they typed into the search engine.
In reality you’d want your website to be listed on Page 1 or Page 2 of Google (as the largest search engine Google shall be used as the default term for all the search engines). And why would you wish to be on Page 1 or 2 of Google? Well pause a moment and consider how often do you search deeper than the first two pages for any online query. I’m guessing rarely if ever do you go beyond Page 2,that’s why you should aim to get your website listed no deeper than Page 2. Ideally however the best position to have your site listed for any particular keyword is the 1st listing on Google Page 1. However that is in a perfect world; but truth be told, once you are on Page 1 of Google you are made or at least your site/blog is!
Getting organic traffic is priceless because the person who typed in that keyword which ultimately led them to your site (via your listing on Google) is a deadly serious prospect. They are actively searching for whatever subject your website is about. Such a person is the most likely candidate to purchase. An added bonus is that such an individual is quite likely new to that subject matter which led them to your site and they obviously wish to increase their knowledge on that particular topic. This type of prospect is the best kind of visitor to get to your site because there is a very high probability they have not yet been tainted by the profusion of other sites out there covering the same subject matter as yours!
Traffic From Article Directories
Submitting well written articles to article directories is another fantastic way to get web traffic. The upshot to this method, as compared to social media (Web 2.0) website submissions, is that you can avoid the time-consuming hassle of aggregating votes in order to get your articles sufficient exposure on those Web 2.0 sites to draw significant amounts of internet traffic. Not only do consistent article directory submissions build your reputation (assuming your articles are indeed worthy) you can build up quite a following. In fact some online marketing businesses have found remarkable success based solely upon article submissions to article directories! And finally another way of getting online traffic is participating in online forums targeting your intended market.

Online Marketing for Small Business – Organic Search Engine Optimisation Versus Pay Per Click

When you are first deciding on online marketing in order to promote your business online, the main online marketing methods that you will encounter are Organicsearch engine optimisation and Pay per click advertising such as Google Adwords.
Organic search engine optimisation and Pay pr click advertising are the two main methods of online marketing. Both these forms of online marketing are aimed at getting highly targeted visitors to your website by making your website rank on search engine results for the keywords that you are targeting.
Ideally a business needs to utilise both in order to get the maximum exposure for their business online. However cost and budget considerations often result in a business having to make a choice between the two.
Organic search engine optimisation refers to the search results that appear in the main centre section of the search results. Ranking within organic search engine results cannot be bought and ranking is a result of organic non-biased steps taken over a period of time. It is dependent on the overall popularity of your website on the internet in general among other on site factors. Organic listings are the results that appear in the main section of a search engine such as Google when we search for something. Pay per click advertising on the other hand refers to the paid listing or sponsored results that appear on the right of the search results page and not in main middle section of the page.
Pay per click result is paid for and results are almost immediate to achieve. However there are many drawbacks. The recent years have seen an exponential rise in competition and a steep rise in pay per click costs. Click fraud is another rising concern where an advertiser may be charged for clicks that are not by genuine customers.
1) Many surveys and search engine marketing studies have pointed than users are more likely to click on organic search results that appear on the main section of the page rather than the paid listings that appear as ads on the right.
2) Organic listings are non-biased and cannot be bought. As such users trust the results more than the paid listings which are a result of paid advertising. The conversion rate for organic listings is much higher than for paid listings.
3) Rising cost of pay per click. Pay per click campaigns are becoming more and expensive day by day as competition is increasing. It is common now a days to be pay as much as £1 or £2 per click for a op 5 position in pay per click campaigns like Google ad words.
4) The results of organic search engine optimisation campaign are more permanent that pay per click. In pay per click the results stop almost immediately at the end of the campaign whereas in organic listings the rank remains.
Pay per click advertising also has its advantages and is a much quicker way to get results. This is useful to advertise events and other marketing campaigns that cannot be planned months in advance. Organic search engine optimisation is a time consuming task and listings often take months to achieve.
In the long run investing an organic search engine optimisationis beneficial and vital in website marketing. It has lower costs and offers a high return on investment. Once a favourable ranking has been achieved it is more permanent. In pay per click the results will stop immediately when the payment has stopped and the campaign comes to an end. Organic search engine optimisation (SEO) campaign also has a wider coverage and generates maximum exposure for your business.
Any organic campaign in order to achieve first page rank in Google will focus on a variety of techniques not only submission to search engines, e.g. directory submissions, press releases, article marketing and social media marketing. All this is important in order to generate quality back links to your website and will most certainly be covered in any organic search engine campaign that is run on behalf of your website.
Organic search engine optimisation is hence a better rounded approach to online marketing and has a much wider coverage. Although you may not see the result within the first few months it will be an extremely useful marketing investment for any business. The benefits of an organic search engine optimisation far outweigh any risks involved with investing in a one year organic search engine optimisation campaign.

Organic search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of optimizing your website or page so that you will become one of the top results in a search engine query. Increased link popularity results in higher Search Engine rankings for your chosen search items so this is one of the most effective methods for organic SEO.
The Advantages of Organic SEO
Many people look down on organic Search Engine Optimization, preferring to use other techniques (such as pay-per-click search engine advertising) that – to their minds – result in higher page rankings in the minimum amount of time. What they don’t realize is that, while this technique does result in higher page ranks, they get smaller profit margins in return because of the ‘cash up front’ that they have to forego.

The ’secret’ to organic SEO is in its “natural” approach to increasing inbound links to your website – which means getting visitors to your website, and enticing them to link to your page. In a sense, organic SEO is a two-step process: getting people interested enough in your website to pay a visit; and providing sufficiently interesting content to persuade them to link to your site.
Organic SEO also involves finding the right keyword to optimize for. If you are not sure what your key phrases are, there are online tools available to help you. These tools are useful in keyword research which will help you refine your organic SEO approach.

Organic SEO begins with getting indexed by the search engines. If you are not in a search engine’s index, you will not be included in search engines results pages. Thus, you have to submit your site to search engines.
Search engine submission can be done through a lot of ways. You can do it through the most obvious way; that is, by submitting your site URL to Google, Yahoo and other search engines you wish to be part of.
Another popular way of getting indexed is by submitting your site to open directories such as DMOZ. This particular open directory is used by Google, so if you get your site listed there, the Googlebot will certainly find you.
In line with directory submission, links from important sites can get you indexed quickly. If you want fast results, buy a one-way link from an important site (not a link farm, mind you) so that Googlebot or any other search engine spider can follow that link to your site and in consequence get your site indexed. In the same way, you can also try site submission services.
Be an Active Netizen
You can also consider taking proactive approaches to optimizing your website. Think about getting into offline optimization strategies such as participating in online forums or blogs, submitting articles, writing press releases and directory submissions, all of which will give you opportunities to ’seed’ links pointing back to your website.
One excellent approach is to start a blog or two about your key phrase, and then link these blogs to your website. Make sure, however, that you continually add fresh content to both your blogs and your site. There is nothing more frustrating for visitors than finding old, outdated content. Providing fresh and interesting content on a regular basis will encourage more people to visit your site.

Organic Search Engine Optimization’s involves more sweat than cash; as such, your profit margins are larger than the other techniques. When you visit any website that buy and sell websites, you quickly learn that any website with organic traffic is valuable, and they sell for more money than sites that have no organic traffic. So what exactly is organic traffic and how does it impact your long and short term marketing costs?
What is organic traffic.
Organic traffic is usually used interchangeably with the phrase “search engine traffic”. You get organic traffic when your site starts to rank well in the search engines. After putting in effort in SEO (Search Engine Optimization), your sites will rank well in the search engines, and you will receive a steady stream of traffic every day without having to pay a single cent.
The problem is, it takes time and effort to get your sites to rank well. First, you have to ensure that your site is optimized for the search engines. Secondly, you will have to embark on a link building campaign to get as many inbound links as you can. The more backlinks you get, the better your site will rank. Backlinks come from external site. So it’s a little bit tricky, since you don’t have control over these sites. The challenge you always face is, how do you get other websites to link to you?
There are many ways you can build links. You can get links from article submissions, web directory submissions, or from posting in forums and blogs. However, all links require effort. The more time and effort you put into link building, the more rewards you will reap. You can outsource all your link building activities if you like. That will probably cost you some money upfront. However, once your site gets to rank well in the search engines, you will get lots of traffic without having to spend additional money.
Short term and long term impact on your marketing costs.
Obviously, in the beginning, you may need to spend some money to get the ball rolling. Nothing ever happens without traffic on the Internet. This is especially true for websites that are new. The search engines still don’t know your site exist, so they can’t possibly bring you any traffic. It takes time for the search engines to crawl and index your pages. And if, you do your link building consistently, you may just rank well quick enough to see results in a month or two.
If your sites do manage to rank well, the rewards can be tremendously. Imagine having thousands of visitors actively searching for what you have to sell. These are all active prospects, and there is a very high chance that they will buy something from you if you offer them what they are looking for. And since you get consistent traffic from the search engines, you can try converting these prospects into paying customers day in and out.
It may be an uphill climb in the beginning but in the long term, organic traffic can help save you thousands of marketing dollars.

The Value of Organic Traffic and Clicks

My Mom believes that most “organic” foods are over-priced and not necessary.
She claims you’re paying more for someone not doing the work of “chemically” caring for the plants. Of course, she doesn’t really mean it, and eats it when she can get it, but is frustrated to have to pay more for something smaller than normal.
However you perceive it, we are learning there is great value in organic food.
Another “organic” of great value are organic clicks. Just what are “organic” clicks? These are the clicks that come to you direct from searches in the search engines. In other words, by and large, you’ve paid nothing for them. (Mom would love that!)
My long-term goal is to receive 80% of my traffic organically.
Here’s how I plan to accomplish that. Since all of my income generating sites are created using blog software, I don’t have to worry much that they get listed on search engines. They are currently all there, except for the newer ones.
My challenge is to get them ranked more relevant for the keywords I have built them around. As I’ve discussed, at least in Google, website ranking has everything to do with how relevant your site is for the keyword presented. So, for example, when someone types in “rental cars”, they don’t get a listing of sites on the Internet that use the phrase “rental cars” in their text, and list the site that uses it more as number one. Keyword stuffing and subsequent ranking is what put search engines like AltaVista and Netscape out to pasture.
I’ve also talked about high quality inbound links. These are worth a lot because this is a major part of the ranking formula at Google. However, in building sites for great reading and using contextual ads to monetize the pages, the last thing you want is a leak.
A leak, you say? Yes. A leak is anything on your page that would allow a visitor to leave without generating something positive for you. A leak could be an 800 number. It could be an off-site website. It could be an e-mail address. And a leaky site will cause you to lose traffic.
If you ask someone to link to your site, they expect a reciprocating link. A reciprocating link, especially to another quality site with a similar topic is a sure sign of a major leak.
Okay – so what do you suggest, Dave?
There are a few options. First, address your friends – anyone with any page rank. Ask them to help you out. If they have more page rank than you, your site will gain ranking in the search engines.
Next, post in forums that relate to your topic. I don’t believe the search engines would be dumb enough to include inbound links from “groups” to count for anything – but private forums are another issue. Look into these and post on them actively.
And, lastly, take a look at eBay for listings on websites that have a page rank higher than yours. Try a few cheap ones first – but wait at least 90 days before you swear it doesn’t work. That’s how long Google’s Page Rank takes to update. (Sometimes sooner.)
Do programs like Web Position or SubmitIt work? Yes! Invest some time in submitting your site to smaller search engines – ones not typically spidering your site. Make sure you use the schedule feature so you constantly submit (within the limits of the search engine).
I leave you with something that will help you more than anything, and that is praying. Simply pray and believe that God will increase your territory and your ranking. He knows all and when we converse and trust in Him, things happen.
Work it like a business – and go out and buy some organic. You’ll live longer, and in better health.

When you first launch a website, you naturally want all the content crammed into it that you can lay hands on. But if it’s real traffic you’re looking for, consider taking a more patient approach.
Anyone involved in SEO can tell you that organic growth of relevant content is the most successful long term strategy for search engine placement. When people read that, however, their brains toss the part they don’t understand or want to deal with: “organic.” What they see is “successful long term strategy” and “search engine placement.” And that’s where the trouble starts, because it’s the organic growth that does the work.
What do people mean when they talk about organic growth?
Organic growth means slow, steady, continual growth – the way plants and animals grow. When Google ranks your site they look for this pattern of growth to help determine whether your site is “for real.” Think of an informational site you visit a lot, a forum perhaps, or a site like Wikipedia. Those sites did not spring into being overnight, chock full of content and with a hundred links pointing to them. They started as miniatures of themselves, and as people posted messages and articles they got bigger and bigger.
How can this be harnessed to help promote a website?
Timing of updates can be more important than size of updates. A lot of webmasters have a hard time updating their site regularly. They have day jobs, families, and other websites to run. This can lead to a tendency to update sites in large infrequent chunks.
To get the maximum benefit from your updates, do this instead: When you get time to update your site, prepare and arrange your new content so that it can be uploaded in small pieces. Get everything ready to go so that the only task remaining is the actual publish. Then upload each small piece separately, allowing a day or two to pass between each upload.
By doing this your website ends up with the same content, but search engines monitoring how frequently you update will see a pattern of steady growth. You can still write or gather all your content in one fell swoop, just dole it out to your webserver slowly instead of as a single publish. You won’t see immediate results, but give this a month or two and search engines will take notice, to your benefit.
