Want High Google Rankings? Build it for Humans!

If you want your website to receive lots of free search engine traffic from Google, or any other search engine for that mater, build it as though it was mean for human beings to read. Seriously. The search engines are way too smart for us to waste our time trying to outfox them. Instead, give them what they want.
If people would put as much effort into building a user friendly site with value for its visitors as they do in trying to outfox the engines, they would have what they are seeking…plenty of free traffic. I think part of the problem is that so many people are thinking short term. Folks, it takes time to build organic search engine derived traffic. But then you end up with a nice long-term income.
There are of course a variety of factors that determine how much organic traffic you can obtain that are out of your control. For instance, if you choose a topic that very few people are interested in, it will be very difficult to get large numbers of targeted traffic. That isn’t necessarily a bad thing, and it may well be a good thing. I have a website about one of my inventions, a selective asparagus harvester. I think that in the United States there are only a few hundred asparagus growers, and hence I expect very few visitors to the site. If only one visitor buys one machine it will be a 0,000 plus sale, and well worth the effort of putting up the site.
What I consider to be one of the most important rules for getting great rankings in the search engine results is that you write for a human, and for the most part, an English speaking human with good grammar and use a spell checker. This doesn’t apply if you are a non-English speaking site, obviously.
The reason should be obvious, if word processing programs can not only check spelling, but check grammar as well. If I was a search engine and I was comparing sites to see who to put on the first page of results, and one site had poor grammar, then that would be an obvious point to consider. Spammy sites are far more likely to have poor grammar and bad spelling than legitimate sites.
A word about keywords; do your research and use one of the online keyword research tools. A common problem with websites is poor keyword research. If people do not search for the keywords then even though you are #1, you still don’t get any traffic. There is no substitute for keyword tools and good research.
Optimize each page of material for one or two keyword phrases. Do not attempt to optimize for single word keywords unless there are some very unusual circumstances. It is far easier to capture multiple word phrases. Where ever you put your keyword phrases, make it sound natural. Don’t use them too often. The engines are watching. Work them into your title tag. If your title does not mention you keywords, then the search engines give it far far less importance. It doesn’t hurt to have some keyword phrases in your image alt tags, and in your description tag.
Use a simple clean layout. In recent patent documents Google brings up the idea of web page clutter being a factor in ranking of web pages. If you make the site design simple and pleasing to the eye, you will have a better chance of a good ranking than if your design is sloppy and cluttered.
Content is of course, as always, king. Great content is an absolute requirement. The better your content the more visitors you will get. Part of great content is lots of it. I like to find the best keywords I can, then put up at least 10 pages of information relating to each set of keywords. By having your keyword phrases in a number of different settings you have a much greater chance of visitors picking your site to visit when they search for those keyword phrases. If your content is poor or your usability is not good, your visitors will “bounce off” of your site and the search engines will notice. If your visitors stay for long periods the engines notice that too.
Another thing that great content will attract is links. Lots of inbound links can do wonders for your ranking. If you have really valuable content the links will find you. It does take time, but it does happen. You can actively seek out and trade links with other appropriate sites. Write some articles and submit them to the article marketing sites. They allow you to include links to your site. You not only pickup links, but the articles will drive traffic to your site too.
Once you have it all put together, then you have to wait. It just takes loads of time to gain Google’s trust. Often I begin getting some search engine traffic within a few weeks of getting a new site up, but then a month or two later my traffic drops to zero. Then after months and months of little or no traffic I begin to get s trickle of traffic and it slowly grows till about two years after publishing it. If it isn’t doing well after two years then you best start changing things and doing testing to see what’s wrong.
Keep improving your site keeping in mind that it is for humans, not search engines. The search engines are getting better and better and finding high quality human friendly and useful sites, so by creating just that type of site, you assure your website’s future.

3 Search Engine Optimization Tips For High Search Engine Rankings

Contrary to what you may have heard and assumed, search engine optimization really isn’t that difficult. In fact, it’s really only about three things: keywords, content, and linking. If you can get a grasp on those three things then you’ve come fairly close to mastering search engine optimization. Of course you’re safest best is always to use a professional, but if you’re interested in doing it yourself then here’s what you need to know.
1. Keywords: The Google Keyword Tool is your best friend when it comes to choosing keywords. Simply type in the words or terms you think your target audience will use when searching for products and services similar to yours. Trying using entire phrases instead of single words. Let’s say your company sells unicycles. Instead of simply optimization for the word ‘unicycles,’ try optimization for ‘buy a unicycle.’ The more specific your phrase is, the less competition you will have in optimizing for it. Write down the top three words that you want to optimize for as those will heavily influence your content.
2. Content. Content ranks right up there with links as the most important aspect of your search engine optimization efforts. Content is the key to optimization success. The business of search engines is to provide users with the information they’re looking for; otherwise those users will go somewhere else. In order to give users what they’re looking for, search engines have to give users webpages that are most relevant to the search terms that they entered. So search engines are looking for pages with the most relevant and helpful information for users. If your website has the most helpful and relevant information about unicycles, then your page will receive a high ranking from Google and will show up on the first page of search engine results, if not in the top spot. So instead of trying to trick the search engines by cramming a lot of keywords into content, simply provide content that will provide your target audience with the information they need about your product or service.
Before you write anything, call a friend or find a tape recorded and pretend to talk to a friend. Describe your product or service. When you’re through, write down everything you just said, word for word. Review what you’ve written and insert your first keyword near the beginning of the very first sentence. Put your second keyword in the first paragraph your third keyword somewhere in the second paragraph. Continue through your paragraphs and insert one keyword per paragraph. Don’t use any keyword more than four times total, and use your first keyword again in the last half of the last paragraph.
3. Links. Links are key to search engine optimization success. Search engines base their rankings on the number of inbound links to your site from other websites that they consider authoritative in your field. So make sure that your link-building campaign is ongoing. Revisit it every few weeks or so, remembering that you’re never done and that you have to keep building links even when you achieve a high search engine ranking. Your competitors are constantly building their links too. If you stop building yours then you risk losing your top spot.
These three key are a great jumping off point for your search engine optimization efforts, but if you find you could benefit from more guidance, contact an SEO expert or internet marketer. It’s a fact: Internet users simply will not click through pages and pages of search results to find the information, products or services they need.
A recent Georgia Tech survey revealed that, whilst more than 80% of all Internet users find new websites through search engines, very few of those users are prepared to venture past page one.
The university’s findings are echoed in a 2008 study by JupiterResearch, which concluded that 68% of people would rather try another search if they didn’t find what they were looking for on the first page of results.
And by iProspect, whose survey that same year found that 92% of web users either clicked a link – or abandoned their search – on or before page three.
The case for SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) is clear.
Optimising a website, to ensure it achieves the highest possible rankings, gives website owners a real competitive edge – helping them to raise their business’ profile. And slash their online marketing costs.
No surprise then that, according to eConsultancy, the SEO market in the UK grew by 14% during 2009, to a value of £376 million – with the total market for Search Engine Marketing (i.e.: SEO and Pay Per Click combined) exceeding a staggering £3 billion.
Given all this, you can be confident: your competitors are investing heavily in SEO. And you should too.
SEO? PPC? What’s the difference..?
In an industry beset with TLAs (three letter acronyms!), it’s all too easy to become confused. So, to clarify:
PPC (Pay Per Click) ads, or ‘Sponsored Links’,
are featured at the top, and to the right, of the Search Engine Results Pages (SERPs).
As the name suggests, these listings are paid for.
The remaining listings – which account for the bulk of the listings on the page – are known as organic (or ‘natural’) listings.
These listings are free – hence the attraction of SEO.
So: which is better – PPC or SEO?
The answer, of course, is: both have a part to play. Whilst paying per click enables you to generate web traffic right away, SEO is a slower process. But it’s well worthwhile in the longer term.
Not least because organic listings tend to deliver more visitors.
According to Tamar’s 2008 Search Attitudes Report, 91% of web-users prefer using natural search results when looking to buy a product or service online. And, to paraphrase Mark Knopfler: them clicks are free!
In reality, the two disciplines complement one another. It is widely believed that having both a paid and natural link on a given results page increases the likelihood of the web- user clicking the natural link.
Moreover, Pay Per Click bid values (the amount the company is prepared to pay for a click) are determined in large part by the destination page’s ‘quality score’ – meaning an optimised page is likely to attract a lower cost per click.
SEO is much more complex than paid search (which is little more than a sophisticated form of media buying). And it’s a longer-term strategy: you’re unlikely to achieve top rankings, for your chosen key words and phrases, overnight.
If at all. Google alone utilises more than 200 ‘ranking factors’, of varying importance, to determine a site’s prominence. But its underlying algorithm – like that of the other search engines – remains a closely guarded secret. Thus SEO remains a combination of educated guesswork – and experimentation.
We do however know – beyond doubt – the three factors that will enhance your site’s SERP rankings above all others.

* the relevance and timeliness of your content,
* the quality of your underlying code, and
* the volume and ‘authority’ of your inbound links

Driving SEO Traffic: a Brief History of the Web & 3 Simple Ways to Increase Your Search Engine Rankings

Learning just a fraction of a subject’s history is often incredibly valuable because of the perspective it provides a student. So, here is a brief history of the web, the origins of search engine optimization, & 3 quality tips on how to increase your search engine rankings.
Let’s begin…
I. A Modern Day Traffic Virus!
Many people credit the rise of the consumer internet to the release of the Mosaic Netscape V0.9 web browser…Somewhere around 1994, the web browser became popular in science labs & universities. Then, as more people started discovering the wealth of information that was available, the web became a “mass market” phenomenon too…You could almost say that the web ITSELF is a virus…
As early webmasters started discovering “cool” sites & linking to them, it became very clear that website traffic has real value for 2 reasons:
A. Traffic generally means money. The more targeted traffic a site gets, the more money it should make. While this is generally a good rule of thumb, the traffic source, the site’s audience profile & the traffic “intention type” can drastically affect this equation. (But, those topics are beyond the scope of this discussion as each one could be a 20 page article by itself.)
Traffic can be “monetized” in many ways including:
1. Advertising.
2. Lead generation.
3. And through the direct sales of goods or services.
B. Traffic also seems to have a “multiplication effect” too. The more visitors that come to a site, the more it’s traffic should grow over time. This “traffic multiplication” effect is most likely derived from a combination of:
• Repeat visitors bookmarking the site.
• People emailing it to their friends who also visit it, bookmark it, & in turn, pass it on.
• And most importantly: the number of other webmasters who link to it…Links drive traffic in at least 2 ways that we’ll discuss below.
II. The Origins of Search Engine Optimization.
In the 90s, finding stuff on the web was difficult & people often discovered sites by following links from forums. Then, some crude search engines began appearing to solve the “search” problem…
However, once people discovered that a top ranking for the right keywords phrases could be very lucrative, the modern Search Engine Optimization(SEO) industry was born. Webmasters began developing SEO techniques to get higher rankings…As always, the lure of easy money was hard to resist…
III. Getting Connected.
Then, around 1999, things seemed to change in the SEO universe. With the introduction of more advanced search engines (primarily Google), the focus turned to the importance of having inbound links…the rumor was that the newer search engines used backlinks to at least partially calculate their rankings…
Links are the connections that hold the web together…and while links can be “faked” a million different ways, the new search engines algorithms highly value the number of “votes” a site gets in the form of quality inbound links…
IV. Good News & Better News.
One fantastic benefit of these advanced search engine algorithms is that they make finding “stuff” much easier…The search engine results these days are much better than they were just 10 years ago.
While there are more sites now online, ranking for some terms has actually become a little easier in a few markets. This may be because search engines have gotten better at excluding some lower quality sites from their indexes. But, you still have to use solid SEO techniques if you want to maximize your traffic…
V. 3 Super Simple SEO Tips.
Here are 3 easy SEO techniques to experiment with:
A. Implement “The Mirror Method”
Some experts think that “on page” factors account for as much as 40% of a site’s ranking. Therefore, doing a little “recon” on the competition can really pay off.
1. First, search for your main keyword phrase in your favorite search engine.
2. Spend 1/2 an hour visiting the top 10 sites. Write down any similarities you see between them in a physical notebook. Examine their source codes’ (Press CNTL+”U” in Firefox). You may notice some similarities between the high ranked sites’ structures. Pay close attention to things like title tags, meta tags, linking structures, & any H1, H2, & H3 tags you can find…
3. If it’s feasible, change your site’s structure & tags to “mirror” theirs’. Make your site look like one of the crowd, like it’s supposed to be there. Mirroring can be effective for 2 reasons. First, this will hopefully make a search engine “bot” think that your site belongs in the top 10. Second, when you request links from those top ranked sites, the webmasters will hopefully think “Hey, this site is just like MINE! I’ll post the link right now!”
The goal is to make your site look like it “fits in.” (Fits in to a top ranking that is!)
B. Building A “Link Monopoly” Of Your Own
Methods exist to find high quality sites which will gladly link to yours if you know where to look. Generally speaking, 95% of your competition is probably overlooking some real traffic “gems” that can be found by just doing a little digging. Avoid sites that are clearly overrun with too many newbie webmasters begging them for links.
The trick lies in finding high traffic sites that are relevant but aren’t link “farms.” Believe me, boatloads of these low competition, high traffic sites exist in every market…And getting a prime placement can drive a continuous stream of traffic to your site: both from the links themselves & from your better search engine rankings.
C. The “90 Minute Routine”
Outside of investing ,000 in a professional SEO company, most webmasters neglect to ensure that their search engine rankings remain consistent. Building relevant links, submitting keyword rich articles, & submitting your site to 100 link directories every month can yield MASSIVE amounts of traffic. You’ll generally find that 20% of directories that you submit to will approve your site….Furthermore, a high quality article can “go viral” pretty quick, eventually building 100s of inbound links…
Link building only takes a measly 90 minutes a month. In order to make the process as efficient as possible, time how long it takes you to do it the first time. Write out the steps in a .txt file or MS Word document. Then, revise these steps the next time & again the next time. After 3 months, the process should be easy to run through…And, if you need some free time, you can always outsource this task to another person for a small fee…
Implementing these tips WILL increase your traffic, often in less than 48 hours…
In summary: You’ll find that modeling your best competitors & investing a mere 90 minutes a month will pay off as your traffic levels & search engine rankings continue to climb…
And that’s traffic you can take to the BANK!

I got into SEO back in 1998. Back in the day, Search Engine Optimization (SEO) was much simpler than it is today. Most tricks like blatant keyword spamming and hidden key phrases worked like a champ. Even better, little tricks like these were usually OK to use. Not anymore.
In fact, most old-school tricks don’t work today and many can get your pages banned. This is great news for you. Over the next few minutes I’ll show you how to make Google absolutely LOVE your web pages and help you jump to the top!
Here is what you need to know… Google places about 90% of its ranking priorities on content and links. Keywords are still important, but only in your pages’ content (not the META Tags.)
Sounds simple, right? Definitely! And it really is. First you find the best keywords and place them just right in your web page text. Next you get great inbound links. Then finally, you monitor your progress closely (and competition’s progress.)
Step 1: Find the Best Keywords
Go to https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal and type in any keyword or phrase you think your target audience is looking for.
Tip: Use specific keyword phrases whenever possible. If you have a Web page dealing with floral delivery, think beyond just the word “flowers”, with its 257,000,000 competing pages on Google and try “sending flowers”, which has fewer than one percent the number of competing pages (at 1,940,000 pages) but plenty of people searching for it each month (“flowers” = 24,900,000 searches last month while “sending flowers” had 9,400,000.) Think about it for a minute… You can compete against less than less than 1% of the pages for about 40% of the possible targeted visitors. Now that’s impressive! You have a huge advantage over 99.5% of your competition with just that single tip.
Now list the top three keywords and keyword phases in order from best to second best and so on. You’ll need this for your content.
Step 2: Develop Killer Content
Content is your most important on page optimization resource. Don’t ever forget that. It is what Google bases your ranking on, AFTER linking that is. Developing search engine friendly, “people optimized” content is vital to your success. Google can read a Web page just like a person does, thanks to natural text algorithms. And they can tell if you are writing your pages for real people or just trying to get higher ranking. Relax. With this tip, you will do both!
First, grab a pen and pad and call a friend. Tell him all about your product or service. You’re talking to a friend so be natural and let it flow. Forget grammar.
Now end the call and write it all down. Write it word for word, as close as you can remember it. If you can record the call, that’s even better.
Next, go through your newly developed page content and fit your top keyword somewhere near the beginning of the first sentence. Now try to find a natural place to insert your number two keyword; hopefully also in the first paragraph. If possible, try to get your third keyword somewhere in the second paragraph.
Now place each of your three keywords in the next three paragraphs; one keyword per paragraph. Just work it in naturally. If it doesn’t fit, don’t force it.
Avoid repeating any given keyword more than four times per page and mix it up a little. Use one of the keywords a little more or less than the others so it does not create a visible pattern.
When you get to your final paragraph at the bottom of the page, be sure to use your most important keyword in the latter half.
Step 3: Get Great Links and Monitor Your Progress
Today, quality inbound links typically account for more than 85% of your Google ranking success. Getting the best possible links is the critical step that will put your Web pages over the top. But don’t stop there! Finding and landing these links is an ongoing task that needs to happen every couple weeks, at the least. Once you are on the right track you need to monitor your progress and your site’s status (how any given search engine actually sees it). This will tell you not just where you are, but also where you are most likely to be. Years ago we had to do all link work and monitoring by hand, and it took a long time. I averaged about 16 hours per week for each site! My advice is to find a good SEO tool and let it do that work for you. If you get hold of the right product, it’s the best money you’ll ever spend.
I used WebPosition for almost three years but switched to another with automated linking, which I personally find the most time consuming part of any SEO project. Both are excellent products for tracking and reporting however (Please note that Google has since banned Web Position due to abuse but it still works great on other search engines and has very nice reporting features and worth considering if you own an SEO company with many clients.)
