So, you’ve been busy with a web designer for a couple of weeks now. They’ve given you a great bargain on a cms, but there’s something not quite right. The design looks very amateur. Like it’s meant to entertain visitors above 70 years old.  They also ignore a lot of your technical related questions, or you feel the answers aren’t satisfactory.
Well, it looks like you’ve went and gained a non-web designer to construct your website. Is this a print company you went to see? Possibly a friend, or neighbour? Someone who has a full-time job doing something altogether un-related, but dabbles in web design in their spare time?

Well, here’s the bad news….It’s your fault! What????, I hear you say.
Put it this way. Web design is a very brutal trade to master correctly. It takes years of ui design training, examination, coding, improving, and most of all, acquiring the new technologies as they arrive. You’re more than likely in the group of people who clearly don’t understand the complexities of web design. Hence the reason you’ve asked a printer (un-related business) or someone else with minimal web design and development experience.
Now, If I was one day decide I wanted an extension on my house. I’d look around and see a lot of nice extensions that I like. Maybe using the internet, or a few company brochures. What if I just said, hey, I like this one, and instead of going to a professional building/design company, I asked my neighbour Carl (He’s a surveyor or something, and knows about building houses).

Well, welcome to the universe of web design. The only deviation is there are no regulators and just about anyone can pass themselves off as a web designer. Yes, even printers. They’re quite blameworthy of the linking print and web design together. Offering packages such as “E-commerce 9. Now, firstly, this is entertaining. No professional web designer, ever, would even attempt to sell e-commerce for ?299. E-commerce is a lot of work and takes loads of time to plan, design, code & implement. Not to mention any additional SEO work if you require overtaking any competition in the SERPS. What you’re buying here is nothing but junk. Not only that, but you’re buying the same looking junk as every other no-budget  harry.

So, what can you do? Here are some no-bull tips in helping you find a good web designer.

A web designer’s full time employment, is a web designer. Not a printer, brick layer or games designer. But a WEB DESIGNER. Sometimes it might be changed slightly like web ui designer, or digital designer.  But their job is a full time web designer, nothing else.
At no time hire someone to design and develop a website, whose job title is “Web Master”. This is nothing to do with web design and development. They look after site content/members.
You’re not going to get a good website for a few hundred quid. Forget it! A good website will cost you no less than 00. And that’s just the basics.
A good e-commerce website will cost you no less than ,000 and monthly fees for SEO if required. Do you really think amazon is build using cubecart or oscommerce? Think again.
Good designers don’t use templates for your main website. You’d look the same as 1000 other sites. Good designers know you need to stand out and have your own presence
A good web designer will have loads of examples of their work. Ask to see them. Make sure there is plenty of LIVE sites and examples.. Ask to see the website visitor statistics. The part your interested in is, “Unique Visitors Per Month”. Not hits or any other form of confusing banter.

I’d say the list above should keep you safe. Maybe you’ve already been through the above, and have learned your lesson. You don’t get anything for nothing. I wish I could phone my local BMW dealing and ask for an M3 for 9, but it’s never going to happen.

How to do Internet marketing the right way is equally as important as the amount of time you actually spend working on your business.For that reason I want to write a short article on five ideas on where you can learn the Internet marketing skills that you really need to have.

1. Discussion forums. Specifically The Warrior Forum is a fantastic resource for Internet marketers to learn how others are making money online.

Joining discussion forums are free. The Warrior Forum is arranged so you can quickly find the information you need.

Once you’ve registered for your account you can begin to read the different threads that have been started. You can also ask questions and get answers to things that you have run up against in your own business.

2. Article directories. New content is added every day.

Again this is a free resource and the articles are laid out by categories so you can quickly find what you are looking for. Ezine Articles, Go Articles, Idea Marketers, and Article Base are some of the top article directories.

3. Paid membership site. A handful of professional Internet marketers,for example, who are available to help you build your business is The Affiliate Power Group.

They also provide a members only discussion forum where you can get personal attention when you need it. Would you be willing to spend a little over a day for personal coaching?

4. Buy a training course. You will find a fantastic Internet Marketing course that is over 800 pages of step by step training on doing Internet marketing the right way at The Internet Marketing Center.

Many Internet marketing gurus introduce new training courses on a regular basis. You can obtain hard copies of their training materials, but most of this information can be accessed online.

Blog Blueprint is a new training course on how to use the Internet to build a blogging empire. This is just one example of something new available on the market today.

5. Read blogs. Subscribe to receive updates from the top blogs via email. Problogger.net offers great free and paid training on how to blog for profit. Willie Crawford teaches Internet marketing on his excellent blog that offers several updates every day.

You are really going to need these five ideas on how you can learn Internet marketing skills in order to succeed. The Internet offers many resources for you to become educated on Internet marketing depending on your budget.

Forex or foreign exchange market is the largest financial market for trading currencies from across the globe. Foreign currencies are traded nonstop based on the rise and fall of the currency market. The market operates continuously for twenty four hours a day, five days a week. The trade conducted daily on foreign exchange market reaches 1.5 trillion dollars a day. What makes it so appealing is the fact that internal influences can’t affect it.

To start trading successfully in this market, Forex software is employed by some people. There are essentially two types of Forex trading software commonly available – web based and client based. The client based system can be downloaded and installed in the computer. The drawback with this is that it provides limited accessibility and security is an issue with these. Also there are usually additional charges for continuous updates. The web based software allows trading to be conducted all the time through Firefox or Internet Explorer and has greater security. Finding a system is not difficult as there are a multitude of them available to fit all price ranges; it is just a matter of finding a suitable one.

Forex software is created to scrutinize the currency market using complex algorithms to point out the best possible options for trading. The benefit of using this software is that it is more cost effective as opposed to using a stockbroker. The second major benefit of the software is that it saves a lot of time and trouble in terms of analyzing market trends and data to figure out the ideal trade options.

Installing Forex trading software takes only a few minutes. Depending on the expertise of the user, the Forex software can be set up so that it only analyzes and signals or it can go ahead and make the trade on behalf of the user. Plenty of online tutorials for first time users are available. Even a novice can learn to use it and start trading. The software does not require exhaustive knowledge of the Forex market. A lot of these Forex trading software do not even require the user to be available at the computer; the user just puts in the desired limits and it does all the work.

So, does Forex software really work? Well, there are always duds in every field and it takes some experience to differentiate between the gems and the duds. A lot of sellers take advantage of the innocent public by making promises of fast riches. The smart thing to do is not to fall into their trap. However, there has to be a reason why roughly thirty percent of the traders are currently using this technology. With the Forex market not showing any signs of abating, chances are that the number of Forex trading software available will only increase.

From the very beginning of the Internet, the number one challenge which all of us have faced is how to attract qualified visitors to our websites. Throughout the boom years, one of the most popular solutions was to get massive funding, relatively easy to get in those days, and “buy” traffic, by various means.

As an iconoclastic young developer, with ambitions of beating the “big boys” at their own game, more time than money or the connections to get it, I sought a less capital intensive methodology to achieve the same results. Years of study and rapt attention to the pertinent forums, trying everything that even seemed to make sense (making many mistakes along the way, and learning much from each one), then carefully monitoring the results, has lead to many highly workable tools in our SEO bag of tricks. The outcome of these trial and error methods, (lots of both) lays the foundation of our SEO services and the basis for the ongoing growth of traffic to your website and ours.

The simple fact of the matter is this: Expertise in any other form of writing in no way qualifies one for the type of writing required to optimize a website for the Internet. There are many sites which have less than correct punctuation, grammar, and even spelling which rank #1 in their optimized search phrases. This is not to say that I don’t think these things are important, only that to be found in the search engines, they are not the most important consideration.

The flip side of this argument is equally true. Just because someone knows all the ins and outs of all of the search engines, can write algorithms in their sleep, has lunches with Dr. Eric Schmidt and is on a first name basis with Larry Page and Sergey Brin, does not, in any way, make them a writer. All of the writing on this site was done as a collaborative venture between Susan K. Thompson, a professional writer with strong academic credentials and real world experience, in both business and marketing, and myself. Was there a lot of editing and re-write? Yes. Were there disagreements? You bet! Was it worth it? Look at the record.

Emerald Coast Entrepreneur was launched on May 1, 2005 with most site optimization in place and submission to the directories just beginning. With a total monetary investment of less than 0.00, and a time investment, I’d rather not think about, but which approached 300 hours, the site was given a PR5 ranking by Google on its first update, less than 2 months after our launch.

Studies show that over 90% of all online users use search engines to find what they are looking for, whether products/services, or just plain old information.

The following twelve points will, I hope, summarize a philosophy, approach and methodology to the SEO question which is both sound and effective, along with giving some helpful insight into the industry itself.

1. Content. Content. Content.
Effective, professional, optimized Copywriting is the single, most important factor in any SEO campaign. Search engines index websites based on the content found on each page of the site. With a thorough understanding of the language and grammatical conventions combined with intensive research, to find and exploit the market focus, one can move a website to the upper echelon of the “SERP’s” (Search Engine Results Page) in a methodical as well as ethical manner.

2. Analyze Web Logs.
Measure everything, at least twice, and then check again. While I would be the first to say that many of the procedures that make up website optimization are more art than science, one needs to take a very scientific approach to the results of the effort. This is done by methodically keeping a record of, and making an analysis of the sites web logs. There are a number of specialized software which make the job easier but at the bare minimum, one needs to keep a close eye on the site visitors and their activity while on the site. No matter how well planned the strategy, it is largely theoretical until proven by the results, which can only be measured by the logs, and a thorough analysis of their content.

3. No one can guarantee a #1 ranking on Google, or any other search engine.
Those who promise such feats will either optimize for such vague search term phrases (such as, “green stunted widgets with purple Polka-dots and icing”) that no one will ever likely look for, or they are making a false claim, which they have no intention of keeping, or they have an inside edge at Google, something which they will lose, quickly, when the honest folks at Google find out about it. The other option, that they will take the money and run, is worth mentioning here but I’ll be polite.

4. Some things are just plain silly.
You don’t need to submit your site to 50,000 search engines. Businesses which offer this service are suspect, at best. 85% of the search results on the Internet come from one search engine, which, if you have one link from an established website, or better yet, a directory, will find your site just fine, on its own. Four (4) search engines account for over 90% of the traffic on the web. As for any supposed benefit which may accrue from being listed in an obscure search engine in Botswana which specializes in safaris to the Kalahari Desert and receives 7 hits per day; well, you figure it out.

5. SEO is not Pay-per-Click.
While no one would argue the effectiveness of getting increased traffic and sales, through a well planned, pay-per-click campaign, the fact remains that the conversion rates are generally low and they cease the moment the “pay” stops. With a well planned and executed SEO campaign, while results may take a bit longer, they continue to produce, and in fact grow, long after the work is done and paid for. Quite often we have found that after a thorough optimization of a site, only minor adjustments are needed on an ongoing basis, primarily related to new content and/or new items of sale or service.

6. SEO is not witchcraft, Druidism, shamanism.
Neither does it require any special chants, ceremonial fires, or vestments, though some of us do like to howl at the full moon, on occasion. There are no “Top Secret” practices which a reputable SEO cannot tell a client, a judge, or his mother, for that matter. The very nature of the Internet has always been cooperative and there is nothing about SEO that can’t be learned, with a heavy dose of time and money. A reputable SEO firm will give you an item per item breakdown of just where the money goes. Be wary if you sense a secretive atmosphere or any unwillingness to answer questions. While there are technical points which might take some background to fully understand, if one has a solid overview of the entire situation, a simple explanation should be easy enough to come up with.

7. Do-it-yourself SEO.
Yes, you can execute your own SEO campaign and find a reputable SEO firm to help plan and organize it for you. About one half of my own clientele do some part of the actual work themselves, or have their in-house dedicated personnel do it, after discussion of the goals and aims of the business/website, a thorough website analysis, comprehensive search phrase research, and focused instruction on the ways and means of achieving high SERPs. These preliminaries are followed up with a detailed program of suggestions and methods which the client can then implement themselves or hire others to perform. Average savings; 30-40%.

8. Phased Implementation.
While many companies spend thousands of dollars per month on Search Engine Optimization, an alternative is available which will pay dividends to you in increased sales and leads without the high initial investment. The most important consideration is to have a reputable firm handle the initial evaluation and suggested optimization planning first. The trial and error method will cost much more, in the long run, with or without the desired result. After studying the plan and establishing a workable budget you may implement the plan as finances allow.

9. Remember the old saying, “If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.”
Never was this more true than in the realm of SEO. While concrete and measurable gains will always come from a well thought out and executed optimization strategy, the Internet is a competitive media and we all want to be number one. Accept that a steady upward movement, over time, will place you worlds ahead of a flash followed by a crash.

10. A thought to ponder.
At stake, in the race for the top, is the very existence of your website, your business, and quite possibly your reputation. Beware of any “shortcuts” or less than ethical schemes that anyone might suggest to further your business goals. When it’s all said and done it is you, the business owner, who bears the responsibility for any company or individual you hire. Insist on knowing exactly what the strategy is and what steps are being performed to implement it. If it seems, in the least, suspicious, ask for and get an explanation. In this case, not only is Ignorance not bliss, it could very well be the beginning of the end for your business.

11. All incoming links are not created equal.
Both the relevance to your line of business and website subject matter and the PR value of the incoming link determine how valuable they are to your own PR ranking. With Google starting the trend, nothing new there, and most of the others following close behind, the days of grabbing all the inbound links, in any way possible, are gone. Not only will low ranked and/or irrelevant inbound links not help, they will, in fact, cause a penalty. Link farms, free-for-all link schemes, automated link accumulation software, or any other fad that doesn’t carefully screen the links and websites they are coming from will, in the long run, do more harm than good.

12. It’s more than just facts and figures.
The relationship between an online business and SEO is, perhaps, one of the closest of business relationships. In order to be effective, a SEO must know not only the facts and figures pertaining to the endeavor, but s/he must know something of the dreams and aspirations of the business principals. Things which don’t normally come out in a prospectus are often invaluable information when searching for the “right fit” into the complex world of the Internet. My own clients sometimes ask, due to the frequency of my calls and email in the early phases, “Am I your only client?” I usually laugh and say something to the effect that until I know your business almost as well as you do, yes, you are the only one that counts.

I’m about to tell you a new and highly effective way to sell CDs online from your own website. Listen up because I usually put this stuff into an ebook and sell it for gobs of dough, but frankly I haven’t got time to write a book right now. However, I do want to share this knowledge with you because it works. The question is, how serious are you about your career? because if you don’t have any real commitment and focus then no amount of articles and tips you read will help you. But if you want to rise to the occasion. Read on…

Unlike other motivators, gurus or success coaches, I will never give you academic theories, untried or untested ideas. On the contrary, in fact, the only ideas I will share with you will be those that I have personally tried out and had success with. That’s why I get excited, because I see results, and mostly they are light bulb moments. “Why on earth didn’t I think of that before?” is usually the afterthought.

Over the last seven years I have had an enormous amount of success both as a musician and as an Internet marketer. I say that not to brag, but because I want you to to know that if I can do it, then so can you. We are living in a new age. Truly, the geek will inherit the earth. I guarantee that only the proactive ‘details oriented’, ‘out-of-the-box-thinkers’ will really have success over the next few years. Watch if you don’t believe me.

OK, so where do we start? Do you have a website? Good. Do you have a web designer? If so, he or she must read this because for the most part web designers are not Internet marketers, they make pretty web pages. If you do your own web work (and I highly recommend that you learn), all the better.

I am now going to propose to you that you now have two websites dedicated to your band or act, instead of just one. First, you must have your ‘calling card’ website. You know, your site at www.yourdomain.com that contains all the good basic info about you that fans can read. I’ll talk about the other site in a moment.

Ideally visitors should be finding your main website from a ton of inbound links from other sites. Rather than just getting any old link from another site to point to you, do all that you can to get a ‘golden’ link. By this I mean a highly visible link on a highly trafficked page. Do a joint venture if needs be by promoting their site from yours and so on. But get good solid substantial links from other sites whose demographic would be interested in you. Ask those questions!

If you want to score high in the search engines, make sure that other sites display your keyword in their anchor text. In other words, if you want to score high in Google when someone searches on ‘punk bands’, then make sure that that keyword is in the anchor text of the inbound link. OK, now you have a steady flow of traffic to your website. Of course you need to make the site fascinating and seductive. Here’s what you need to understand about your site;

The only reason you have a website online is to collect names and email addresses so you can direct market to your fans!

Sure you want to tell them where and when you will be playing, show them photos etc. But effectively, you do this by direct marketing through email, forming a personal relationship with your fans one by one. And they will love you for it. More on this in a sec.

So the trick now is to figure out how to capture a new visitor. How do you seduce them into your lair? so to speak. Once you have a committed, interested new fan, you can turn this new person into a purchaser, and if you do it right, a fan who will purchase from you time and time again. You do want to make money as a musician, right?

So the secret is getting them to give you their name and email address so your automated system can do the rest. Enter the second website I was just telling you about…

The second website is what we can refer to as a ‘Member’s Area”. Most commercial or corporate online sites that have a member’s area charge a recurring fee to be admitted. You however, are not going to do that. Your member’s area will be absolutely free. All they have to do is subscribe. When they subscribe, they get access to this other site (which can be all part of the same domain) and of course you then have autoresponders set up so you can, over the course of a period of time (usually about 2 weeks), seduce them into buying from you. Works like a charm. Read on…

OK, so this member’s area sounds really cold and lifeless doesn’t it? Doesn’t even sound particularly interesting. This is where you have to put on your creative hat. Don’t call it a member’s area. Personally, I call mine “Backstage”, but you could call it anything you like. How about “V.I.P. Only”. Or “Private Invite Only”. Imagine you are opening a really hip new nightclub and you want only a certain style of person there. Imagine a selective New York nightclub where there is always a line outside and only the beautiful and famous people get to come in. By the way, did you know that there is never usually a need for a line outside a nightclub? How many times have you lined up for half an hour, then been admitted and walked into a half full club? The club is creating a perception that they are extremely popular. But no, all clubs do it because it makes them look good. Adopt this way of thinking for your website. Make it a real ‘inside thing’. Kind of like you have to know somebody to get in. There is a website called www.smallworld.com who have successfully done this, and everybody of course is clamoring to be a part of this highly exclusive place. It is brilliant marketing.

So think about this other new site of yours. What do you call it? How will it be? What do fans have to do to get in? Think about this. It’s your world. Make it fascinating and exclusive. Then build this other member’s site and make it something folks want to come back to. The truth is, you now have their contact info so it almost doesn’t matter to you what they do, but you do want them to remain in your world, so think about what you could do to grab their attention. I’ll give you some ideas.

Your main website will have all the basic stuff like; About you, bio, photos, tour info, subscribe to newsletter, blah blah blah. All good stuff. But this other private site of yours has to contain highly personal, intimate and fascinating stuff that fans can pore over, that they can’t get from your main site. In short, there has to be a seductive and ’slam dunk’ reason why a visitor would give up their contact info. Let’s face it, with spam issues, it takes a lot these days. Here are a few ideas.

We are living in a youtube world right now. There is every reason to make videos and it’s easy to do, and dirt cheap. So…

*Have a band member shoot video of you before and after gigs, hanging out, sound checking, chatting to fans, doing stupid and embarrassing stuff. Make youtube videos and embed them on your VIP member’s site.

*Make audio interviews for fans to click on.

*Have a photos library and build it over time.

*Have a reading room where fans can read glowing (and not so glowing) reviews of your albums and shows.

*Have a band blog or message board where fans can personally interact. Make all band members participate. Build personal relationships with your fans.

*Give away free music.

*Think of anything else fun and creative that fans would want to see in your private room online.

If you are the meek or mild type,you know, all introverted and shy and bashful. Here’s what I have to say to you; Turn that around pal, because you have to be larger than life! Fans want it that way. They want stars and they want to put their stars on pedestals and worship them. Even if you feel a little insecure in this department, do not translate that online. BE LARGER THAN LIFE! The reason I say this is because you have to be confident enough to think that your fans actually want to know more about you.

OK finally, you have completed your private member’s room. On your original website (www.yourname.com) you are going to coax your visitors to your private site area. You can do this on every page of your original website. You can see this whole marketing process on my personal site at www.chrisstandring.com and you can see my “Backstage” private VIP area at www.chrisstandring.com/backstage There, you will see the use of a new marketing idea called Peel-Away-Ads. In the top far right of all my web pages their is a seductive script that makes you want to click on the link that takes you to the Backstage sign up page. You could also place banners and clever text links wherever appropriate. Be creative here.

This whole private member’s area is an intriguing idea for visitors because up until now, most bands offer things like “Subscribe to our newsletter so we can tell you where and when we are playing”. Is this enough anymore? Absolutely not. We have to be creative.

And what do you do when you have your new fan’s contact information? You set up a series of autoresponders that do all the work for you. What this essentially means is, a series of emails written by you personally that gets sent out over a period of time that you specify. Once a week over a period of say 7 weeks, seems to work. You set up these emails like newsletters where you talk about different things your band is doing, or has done. Mostly over time you are going to talk about your CD(s) that you want them to know all about and of course preview and finally buy. Anytime you have something new to tell your fans, you send out a broadcast email. Whenever your new CD comes out, you have a growing list of subscribers to sell it to. Direct targeted online marketing. This is the world you now live in.

Web 2.0 has created a boom on the internet as websites like Facebook, Twitter, and MySpace make the optimum use of it. But is it worth it? Financially, web 2.0 has been a complete failure. Social networking sites like Facebook, MySpace has a list of loyal fans, but these companies are not able to mint money through it. MySpace’s projected 0 million revenue in 2008 falls far short of parent News Corp.’s 500 billion dollar sales target. Twitter even tough has acclaimed wide spread popularity yet it does not have a business model.

The social media companies were hoping for the best to happen with the advent of web 2.0 but unfortunately for them the last year has been a big disappointment as far as financial earnings were concerned. Web 2.0 has no doubts reformed the way we use the web but it has not been successful in making the companies earn much from it.

One of the reasons for this is that the present economic conditions of the web are chiller than the first dot com craze. In the past year only 6 companies from U.S. went public thus shutting the door for any initial public offerings. Another reason is that the ads displayed on the social sites such as facebook are most of the times ignored by the user as they are engaged in seeing pictures or messages from their friends. For this reason only, Yahoo news can charge as much as 30 times more than facebook for putting the banner ad.

Hence, no doubts that Facebook and MySpace and other similar websites will be able to grow up economically but not as powerfully as sites like Yahoo or Amazon or Google for that matter. Amazon started out as only an online bookstore but now it has covered almost all the products for online shopping. So is the case with Google which started out as a search engine and now has a major share in several other fields as well. It is for sure that the web 2.0 boom would be at stake with a new web technology coming into being.

When a person launches a website, they know it is a good thing, but they may not be aware of all the various ideas for successful website marketing. Then since they do not know about those ideas, they can see the site that they worked so hard on to appear one day, but the next day be replaced by another site that is not even as good looking as the one they just launched.

One of the quickest and easiest plans to implement is also one of the ones that can easily cost a person quite a bit of money. That method is to use the pay per click ads that appear on search engines. For some people, the chance of losing money may not be that big of an issue, but for others, it is a serious matter that can easily lead to failure of the site because they can no longer afford the hosting.

If a person has quite a bit of time, they can research various forums that are on the topic that the site covers. Then after they have found some of those sites, sign up for them and in the signature put a link back to the site. The reason that this method may take quite a bit of time is because a person may need to make several posts before they can have a signature, but also the more posts a person makes the higher the chance of people clicking on the signature.

If a person is any good at writing and is able to carry out key word research properly, they may want to attempt the ideas of successful internet marketing called article marketing. This form is free, but it can be time consuming as well. However, if a person writes really good articles and submits them to high ranking directories, it is possible to start getting a steady flow of long term traffic from them.

Getting noticed by the search engines is a great way to get organic traffic. However, the problem is some people may not be aware how to do that and will need to have the help of a search engine optimization expert. These people can help get a site indexed into the search engines, but can also help modify a website to keep people on the site to purchase products rather than to leave.

Building an email list and getting emails out to that list is another great way to market. For some people, they may not think this is a good method, but even if just one person on that list clicks to see what is being offered it could easily lead to a sale and that could pay for the entire month’s bill for the email service.

Having a web site does not always guarantee success on the internet. To get that success, a person needs to be able to get traffic to the site as well. However, the issue that a person can encounter is in not knowing about the various ideas for successful website marketing.

Does Your Business Really Need a Website?

The short answer? Yes! In an age of wireless broadband, mobile TV and video phones, it’s rare that you come across a business that does not have a website. And when you do, it’s generally a surprise. Getting your business online not only provides a greater opportunity to make money, whether that is the intention or not, but it also provides opportunities to save money.

Many small business owners are often reluctant to fork out their hard earned cash to a website developer because they do not understand the benefits of having a website made. Below we list 10 reasons why your business really does need a website!

1. Open 24 hours, 7 days a week, 365 days a year

This one sounds obvious, but the effectiveness of being open 24 hours a day is often overlooked. What sort of customers are you targeting? Students? Stay-at-home mums or dads? Other businesses? No matter who your target market is, chances are their days are filled with looking after clients and corporate accounts, studying or running after 2 and a half year old James all day. By the time they get to even think about buying a product or service, it’s after 8pm, businesses are closed and phone lines are ringing out.

The next best thing for these busy bees is a website. They may just need a question answered. They may have even made up their mind and are ready to buy. The point is, while you and your staff have been asleep, these people have been able to have their questions answered, found out about your business or even purchased a product from your website – all after hours and all without any extra work from your business.

2. Instant gratification

Providing your customers with a website that they can look at whenever they please offers them instant answers, instant information, instant prices – instant gratification!

When possible customers are searching through, say, an online business directory and come across a competitor’s listing which has no website listed alongside your listing which does have a link to your website, it’s obvious which business they are going to continue to look at. Not having a website is a little bit like a ‘dead end’. Your competitor’s listing has given the customer nothing but a brick wall, so to speak, whereas your listing has provided them with another breadcrumb – that little bit extra that will keep them coming towards you.

3. Inceased marketing, reduced costs

Whilst your website is a marketing campaign or tool in itself, it also provides room for extra marketing. Display flyers and website banners on your information pages, get viewers to sign up for your e-newsletter and even increase your perceived credibility by providing articles or tips to do with your particular industry or product. Doing all of this will cost next to nothing compared to if you were to print your flyers and newsletters and pay to advertise in a magazine or journal.

4. Showcase your experience and ability

Faith in your ability to deliver a product or service is key in gaining business. Your business gains this faith and trust by letting the client or customer know what it has done, what it is doing and what it can do for them, and showing them proof of these things.

There are many ways of doing this – massive advertising campaigns, flyers, brochures and booklets, testimonials. The easiest and most cost effective way to showcase these things is on your company’s website. Add a testimonials section. Have a portfolio of completed work. Add images, links to documents and other websites, background information on the product or service – anything that shows the client that you can do what you say you can.

5. Send a professional, established business image

Having a website tells people that you have been around long enough to be able to get a website together, that you are getting enough business to be able to afford a website, and also that you are ‘with the times’. Keeping a portfolio also helps reinforce this image. See #4.

6. Release time sensitive material

Larger businesses often need to release documents or other important materials at a specific time – ie. Not before 9am Monday. This type of information may include competition winners, exclusive ‘news’, annual reports and even exam marks. By making your website the one place the information can be seen at 9am Monday morning, you can rest assured this information will not be leaked any earlier. You are in complete control of this information.

7. Thousands of new customers

Whether your business is local, national or even international, getting your business online will help it grow even larger. Whilst you may service the international marketplace, you may not actively market to them. Your website will do this for you while your time is spent making other important decisions, such as where to have the work Christmas party.

If you are a local or national business, slowly but surely your website will help your name pop up in the international market, allowing you to eventually get a firm foothold on overseas clients and customers, and even help you form important business relationships.

No matter where you’re situated, the geographic location of the online population is almost irrelevant. ‘Online’ is the location – country or state almost seems unimportant. So not only are you reaching the local, national and international markets, also the online marketplace.

8. Keeping up-to-date

Having a website built for your company not only brings your business up-to-date in terms of technology and marketing methods, but it also allows you to keep your customers informed with the latest company news and other developments.

Consider having a News page or even keeping a blog. Whilst a news page can sometimes be more of a ‘headlines at a glance’ page, business blogs are a way to ramble as much as you want about your business, while also connecting with your audience at a more personal level and can make you just that bit more approachable. Perhaps link the word ‘blog’ to blog advertisement?

9. Sales leads

Whilst some media such as printed materials, television and even cold calling can overlook people with disabilities or changing abilities due to age, websites can be designed in a way that allows these people to perceive, understand, navigate, and interact with the site.

A deaf man who may miss important points of one of your TV advertisements due to the use of voice-overs can go to your website and download this ad with captions or even a simple transcript of the ad. A retiree whose eyesight has become quite poor is able to access information on your site as readily as a 25 year old, due to magnification of text and a clear navigation path.

Having your business online will ensure that you do not miss out on engaging the interest of each and every possible customer, including those with disabilities.
