Is Content Really King? – The Power of Links

Is Content Really King? – The Power of Links

On-page content and optimization by itself is no longer enough. Unfortunately, link popularity has become a dominant factor in deciding who ranks the highest within the major search engines, especially within Google. If a competitor of yours is both optimized for the same target search terms and has a higher quantity and/or higher quality of back links, they are going to outrank you: period. Even if your website is perfectly optimized for an extremely niche search term and no other site in the world even mentions your exact phrase, you may still have trouble finding your website if you do not have at least a few back links to “validate” your website.

If it came down to a contest between on-page optimization efforts against link building efforts, links would win hands down. You may find it shocking to hear a President of an optimization firm saying such a thing, but its true. I would challenge anyone to outrank a website that has a massive number of quality back links by using on-page optimization efforts alone with zero link building efforts. Whereas, you can easily outrank a website that is extremely well optimized by focusing heavily on link building efforts. An interesting example is Apple.com. One of the most important elements of optimization is to place the target key phrase within the meta title tag. However, search for the word “computers” on Google and you will find Apple.com on the first page of results. Apple does not even mention the word computers in their meta title tag. How is this possible when there are literally millions of competing websites that are aggressively trying to show up for this term by applying various optimization efforts? The answer is that Apple.com has a superior volume of back links (over 70,000 in Google alone). And a large percentage of these links include the word computers within the anchor text (i.e. Apple Computers, Mac Computers, etc.).

Does this mean Optimization is dead?
The answer of course, is no. Search engines still love websites that have tons of fresh and relevant content. It is the basis of what search engine results are all about. Copywriting fees are worth every penny when it comes to adding well written descriptions of your products and services onto your website. Professional optimization companies still flourish because of the success they bring to their clients through increased rankings and traffic. For optimum results, you need both optimization and links to succeed today.

It’s not just the quantity of incoming links, but the quality and relevance of the websites from which they come, as well as what words are used within the visible text portion of the hyperlinks, i.e. “anchor text.” Reciprocated links have less value than they use to and can potentially hurt your rankings if you are exchanging with too many unrelated websites, i.e. bad neighborhoods. One-way links are the best links.

During the last few Search Engine Strategies conferences, I could not help but notice an increasing number of link-related workshops, including a class dedicated to purchasing text links. Matt Cutts, official spokesman and software engineer for Google shared how he personally believes that buying links is like a politician buying votes and that incoming links should only grow naturally. He shared that the best way to receive incoming text links was to offer something truly helpful and/or unique and interesting to the public and that this would generate free unsolicited, incoming links without even asking. He offered some extreme examples of very creative websites, which caused a national media stir. Within minutes frustrated attendees spoke up about how the search engines started this whole thing by giving too much criteria to links in the first place, and that buying links on other sites (be it through banners or text links) has been a conventional form of advertising well before Google even existed. Some commented that if Google was considering penalization for sites that buy or sell links, they should start with Yahoo, since Yahoo earns a good portion of their income from selling paid text links (i.e. 9/year directory listings). Interesting enough, Google actually recommends on their website that you submit to directories such as Yahoo.

I am sure that a majority of website owners today would love to come up with creative ideas that would generate a ton of unsolicited media attention. The truth is that coming up with something exciting to say about reverse vacuum pumps, or single-mode fiber optic tool kits, or Batesville real estate is easier said than done. Most of the clients we work with offer clear and simple information about their products and services. Waiting around for other websites to give them free, one-way text links may very well result in additional years of continual poor search engine rankings and a lack of sales.

So how do you build back links? Below is a short list of some of the most common ways to increase your back links:
- Offer something truly helpful that may inspire others to link to you without even asking.
- Hire a website positioning firm to help you write and distribute press releases and articles to thousands of sites.
- Ask business partners, vendors, distributors, family members, golf partners, etc. to link to you.
- Ask non-profit organizations if they would post a “contributor” link to you in exchange for a small donation.
- Offer quotes and testimonials to sites you are comfortable with in exchange for a direct link to your site.
- Exchange links with websites (but stay within your industry and away from automated programs).
- Purchase text link ads (costly, typically /month each and up – but may be worth it for the right industry).
- Submit to quality directories whose listings are known to show up as valid back links (excellent value).

Do you need thousands of links? Not necessarily. You may not even need hundreds. Everyday, we perform competitive back-link research and people are often shocked at how little it would take to rise above their competitors. Even if you are in a fairly competitive industry, there are often select search terms that may be far less competitive than others. This is why it is helpful to partner with an experienced search engine positioning company who can aid you in strategic decisions.

Link Building Without Quality: is it Really Help?

Link Building Without Quality: is it Really Help?

You can have best technique but if you do not know how to implement and where, will it really help you to grow your business? Link building is touted as one of the most valuable technique in online marketing. So if you are passionate about link building, you can get number of options- whether request for it, buy it or earn it by writing good content etc.

Quantity matters the most, is the biggest misconception floating around in regard to link building. What does quantity mean here? As all major search engines put major emphasis on link popularity in their ranking algorithm, people overlook at quality parameters and frequently start spreading links over number of sites without quality, in which all popularity is based on chance.

Wrong message on the wrong place can decrease the popularity of your website. Indeed, what are the quality parameters and why it is important should be looked into.

Theme based Links – The links from the sites that have thematically relevant web pages can be more beneficial than non thematic.

No Free for all links – Never obtain links from Free For All (FFA) websites and link frames.

No follow attribute – The link page should not have the “rel=nofollow” attribute.

No SPAM – No spam should be used to supplicate links.

High quality link – In order to maintain high quality, links should be developed manually.

No more than hundred links - As a search engine can crawl only hundred links on a single page, always prefer to add links where the number of links on a page is less than hundred (including inbound and outbound links).

Links from one IP – Links from different websites on a same IP address should be avoided as it comes under link farming technique.

These quality parameters play a significant role in effective link building .Quality link building always get weight age over quantity link building as it garners relevant audiences to your website and reach your website to the apex of search engines. Quality link building can be naturally achieved by writing and posting good content over informative or thematic sites. However, if it is unique it will catch the eyes of visitors towards your link automatically. Putting an extra effort in link building could not increase popularity of your website, it needs effort with mind and this is why people with experience always prefer quality link building over quantity.

Do You Really Need Software for Affiliate Marketing?

Do You Really Need Software for Affiliate Marketing?

Affiliate marketing has panned out to be one of the top opportunities for entrepreneurs to pursue on the internet. Many enjoy this opportunity because of how easy it is to get started and how little you need to start making money right away. One question that often comes up, though, is if you really need any software for affiliate marketing.

Typically, you do not need anything to get started with your affiliate marketing opportunity. The key to succeeding with this is promotion and advertising. You have to be able to generate a high traffic volume; otherwise, you have no money coming in from sells.

To aid you with this, most affiliate programs will provide you with some kind of marketing tool. Some common examples include banner ads or text links to place in emails. But this is still not always as effective as you would hope.

Because of this, there is the need for you to download software for affiliate marketing. While it is not necessarily affiliate marketing software, it is software you can use for other things to assist with your path to increasing your traffic volume.

You would be surprised at how much software you can actually use to benefit your affiliate marketing venture. First, it is beneficial for you to have a word tracker account and an FTP client for your web site.

Next, you will want to have a program to analyze the logs of your customers’ actions on your web site. A big part of succeeding online with affiliate marketing is being able to keep track of the visitors who come to your site and where they came from. This enables you to narrow down what kind of marketing is working the best for you. In addition, you will also want to download a program to help monitor your sells.

What many people begin to realize is that it is far easier to promote affiliate programs with a web site. This gives you a place to send prospects and allows you to go into much greater depth with the affiliate program you are involved with. In order to build a web site, you will need to download software or a specific program unless you are an HTML master.

The last kind of software for affiliate marketing you will want is software to help you construct a blog. Blogging has become essential to have success with a business or program today. It allows you to open up and gain the trust and respect of your visitors. There is a plethora of blogging software like Blogger or WordPress for you to choose from.

While you do not necessarily need affiliate marketing software, it is extremely beneficial to purchase software for affiliate marketing. You can benefit greatly from having software to help you construct a web site and blog together.

Organic Search Engine Marketing – it Really Works!

Organic Search Engine Marketing – it Really Works!

While helping traditional ecommerce companies increase their organic search engine marketing, I realized that the services and techniques we apply to those traditional ecommerce clients can be utilized by Internet marketers anywhere and everywhere, including affiliate marketers!

My realization led me to write this article. My goal here is to outline the general process and techniques we employ for organic search engine marketing.

I’m going to construct the body of this article with the following sections:

1. Organic search engine marketing v. paid search engine marketing (PPC) 2. Blogs v. static web pages 3. Long tail keywords v. short head keywords 4. Unique content and Web 3.0 5. Internet marketing and Web 2.0

1. Organic Search Engine Marketing v. Paid Search Engine Marketing (PPC)

Organic search engine marketing is marketing a website to increase the ranking for its web pages in the organic, or natural, search engine results pages (SERPs).

Paid search engine marketing is incorporating paid advertising strategies such as Google® Adwords or Yahoo® Search Marketing in order to be listed in the “sponsored” or “advertisement” sections of the search engine results pages (SERPs).

With the increasing costs of paid search engine marketing, advertisers have been suffering from a downward trend in return on investment (ROI). On the other hand, with more sophisticated and proven strategies for organic search engine marketing, the return on investment (ROI) for those who market to rank higher naturally in the SERPs is increasing. Therefore, we advise ecommerce companies, affiliates and super-affiliates alike to shift their resources from paid search engine marketing to organic search engine marketing.

2. Blogs v. Static Web Pages

Blogs have an inherent and distinct advantage over static web pages. Search engines like blogs better. Everything being equal (design, content, page layout, H tags, Alt tags, age, etc.), a blog page will outrank a static web page more often than not. However, all things are not equal! Blogs take advantage of plug-ins, or features, to be very search engine friendly.

We create and customize “Power Blogs” for our clients. A “Power Blog” is a search engine friendly WordPress blogs with tons of SEO plug-ins. Once we install a Power Blog we use it as a platform for Web 2.0 marketing, a.k.a. social marketing.

The benefits of our Power Blog include:

(A) Multi-Channel Visitor Strategy – Instead of having Google® be responsible for 95% of your visitors, now you can also get visitors from all of the Blog Search Engines. Because blogs use RSS (really simple syndication), you will find that other websites are syndicating your content on their websites, bringing you more visitors and links. By having multiple streams of visitors you protect yourself in case one of your traffic streams starts to underperform.

(B) Free Links To Your Site – The amount of links that you have to your site plays a huge role in how highly you rank on Google®. By utilizing the Trackback feature in Wordpress, you can automatically get other websites to link to you for free.

3. Long Tail Keywords v. Short Head Keywords

Remember, this is called “Organic Search Engine Marketing”…..it’s marketing, and marketing needs a focus. In order to focus in on what to market for, you need to have a solid foundation of the main keywords that describe your business and/or products that you are selling. These main keywords are one to three phrase keywords (or keyword phrases) generally speaking and are more than likely highly competitive. These types of keywords are known as “Short Head” keywords. For example, “car insurance.”

Once you know your short head keywords, you will want to market directly to more specific, longer keywords related to the main short head keywords. These longer, more specific keywords are known as “Long Tail” keywords. For example, “car insurance discounts in Georgia.”

Although the traffic for each long tail keyword is usually much less than its short tail relative, if you add up all the long tail keywords, they will usually add up to much more traffic and most importantly, targeted traffic, than the short tail keywords alone.

4. Unique Content and Web 3.0

Once you have targeted the long tail keywords for your business or niche, then you can start marketing for them.

The cornerstone for organic search engine marketing is unique content creation. Whether it’s 500-word articles, blog posts, blog comments, forum posts, social snippets, or videos, you are going to want to be able to create unique content based on your long tail keywords.

Web 3.0 is a term that refers to the future of the World Wide Web. In our opinion, that future includes the “Semantic Web” or web use affected by artificial intelligence. Sounds kind of like Star Wars®, Alien and E.T. all wrapped into one big and scary WWW…doesn’t it?! Well, not really of course. Semantic Web in this case just means that search engines will be able to figure out what a web page is all about in a different, more intelligent way. The major idea here is that search engines will take a more encompassing view at a page and understand its meaning rather making a determination based on figuring out which keywords pop up most often. In this new Web 3.0 scenario, a search engine might find a web page on “sun tanning in Florida” to also be quite relevant to “sun tan oil application” and therefore list this example page in the search engine results pages under both keywords.

What does Web 3.0 mean to you? Basically, when creating your unique content, keep the semantic web concept in mind and use synonyms for your target keyword wherever it’s natural. Never stuff keywords in your content, i.e. use a keyword just to use it and not when it should be used naturally…and never stuff keyword synonyms either!

5. Internet Marketing and Web 2.0

Web 2.0 is the “Social Web,” so naturally, the concept of social marketing should apply to today’s Internet Marketing strategies.

Social marketing includes posting on social networking, social news and social bookmarking websites.

You can also think of blogging as part of Web 2.0, and of course you’re covered because you have read Section 2 above.

In conclusion, whether you own your own ecommerce business and sell your own products, or if you are an affiliate or super-affiliate, organic search engine marketing must be on your “actions list.” In the long run, outranking your competitors in the search engine results pages proves to bring a higher return on investment (ROI) than trying to out-advertise your competitors in paid search engine marketing.

You now have the basic know-how to create your organic search engine marketing strategy.

What Can You Really Expect From Your Search Engine Optimization Efforts?

What Can You Really Expect From Your Search Engine Optimization Efforts?

Search engine optimization experts and SEO users are well aware of how competitive the search engine ranking world has become over the last few years. After all, the number of web pages that are being indexed by search engines every day has not only doubled or tripled, but has quadrupled itself over and over as the years go by. Furthermore, a growing number of the webmaster population is becoming familiar enough with search engine optimization techniques to begin to pose a threat to those sites making massive SEO campaigns.

Not too long ago, the majority of webmasters were unaware of the concept of SEO, and, for that matter, hadn’t even considered search engines as a part of their marketing strategy over which they had any realistic control. Essentially, the only way to communicate with search engines that was understood at the time was placing keywords in the Meta tags of the webpage which had little to no real impact on the ranking when all was said and done. At that time, it too little to no effort to achieve very favorable search engine ranks in even the largest search engines. Even the more competitive areas were still within the realm of possibility for a new website.

Today, on the other hand, the opposite is true. Even when it comes to keywords and key phrases that nobody uses for searching can pose an obstacle for achieving a respectable search engine ranking unless you are extremely skilled with your SEO strategy. Even then, search engine rankings that may have been achieved one day may only be there for a single day, replace the next day by someone who has done something slightly better. The problem becomes that much worse when it comes to businesses with new websites. New websites see very few results using search engine optimization strategies. The older your website, the better its chances of seeing practical results from search engine optimization efforts. This is why it is important to consider your website a long term investment. The longer it’s around, the better your chances of obtaining favorable search engine ranking.

At this point in the internet marketing industry, it is getting to the point that webmasters, website owners, and search engine optimization experts need to refocus their efforts on obtaining better targeted traffic that can be transformed into customers, instead of simply trying to grab at a great rank with any keyword at all. Unfortunately, most webmasters are still looking for short-term, instant results. This is something that today’s search engines just aren’t prepared to provide.

This is not to create the misunderstanding that search engine optimization has no value whatsoever. After all, achieving a #9 position is much more favorable than achieving the #57 spot. However, it simply means that those coveted top three spots should no longer be the single most important goal of the internet marketers who are using search engine optimization to help their results with search engines.

Instead, the focus of SEO efforts should be using the right keywords, instead of seeking the best space in the search results. It’s time to see the big picture, instead of just the ranking that can be achieved for a twenty-four hour period, six months from now.

The trick is to make sure that the content in your website is of high quality. This means that it has interesting, usable information that is unique from everything else that is out there. It needs to be creative, practical, and well written. This means that rewriting your competitor’s material is out of the question, and simply copying content from public domain articles is completely useless. You need to think about what your website is really about, and come up with your own unique angle and thoughts that will be interesting and useful to your readers. This is not at all easy, and may require the assistance of writing and web content professionals to get you started, but it should be considered a long-term investment that will be well worth your effort when you start to turn the traffic that you do have into a high percentage of new and returning customers. Remember, everybody out there is trying to snatch up all of the “best” keywords and churning out fast content to get those phrases used the most. You need to make your site different by using great keywords, but placing them within exceptional content that will actually keep the visitors that you achieve.

Social Media And Retail: Do Your Customers Know How Cool You Really Are?

Social Media And Retail: Do Your Customers Know How Cool You Really Are?

We’ve talked a lot about getting new customers through social media. What about the customer you already have? Is there a way social media can help you maintain loyalty with your current customer base? And do they know that you are involved with social media? Your store or selling location is a crucial piece of the social media puzzle.

The biggest opportunity for corporate retail is customer loyalty. Big guys work on very small margins and high overhead so they have no choice but to make it up in volume. There are 3 ways to do that:

get more customers
get existing customers to come back
make customers who come into the store buy more stuff

Social media can actually help you in all 3. We already talked about how to get new customers with social media and getting customers to buy more stuff is better served at the store level with your own unique merchandising layouts and customer service. That leaves us with getting existing customers to come back. Small retailers and merchants benefit 2 ways with increased customers loyalty. First, the customer comes back and spends more money. Second, the customer tells their friends about you and they tell 2 friends, and so on and so on. This is called word of mouth marketing (WOM for short) and it’s the best possible marketing you can get. If you think about it, WOM is actually a form of social media (please see the quasi definitions on Monday’s post).

Ok, so how can we use social media to increase and enhance customer loyalty?

Take a look at your location. Do your customers know that you are involved in social media? If I walk into your store, how will I know what your Twitter id is? Or where to find your Facebook fanpage? It is very important that merchants use their store as a marketing vehicle. You post up signs with specials and promos right? How about the big return policy posted at the register? And your hours of business? These are all bits of information communicated to your customer at the store level. The same elements can be applied to social networking. Use signage and bagstuffers to let your customers know where to find you in social media. Educate your associates about your social network marketing plans and let them know how important it is to talk it up with the customer.

One of my clients took it upon herself to reprogram her cash register so that her Twitter id appeared on each and every receipt that was printed. Another merchant I worked with gave a small discount to anyone who signed up on his brand’s Facebook fanpage. This deal was communicated through signage at the store level and his followers number in the hundreds. There is huge opportunities at the store level to market your social media outlets.

Remember yesterday when I said that social media will take up some of your time (http://cueworkshops.com/CUEBlog/?p=748)? If you want to truly build loyalty with your customers through social media, it is critical that you stay in touch with them frequently. If your customer signs up, there is a reason. They want to stay informed with your brand. I usually sign up when I see a merchant advertising themselves on social media. The problem is, I don’t get anything from them. And that means their customers are getting anything from them. One tweet a month is not what I consider a strong social media presence but the sad reality is that owner/mangers have very little time to invest in social media. My advice: make time. You are missing a great opportunity to stay in touch with your customer after they leave the store.

Here are some ideas for keeping in contact with your customers to increase loyalty and return visits:

Make sure your customers know that your store is accessible through social media networks by using signage and other visual tools
Use your team to build social media awareness with your customers. Talking it up on the sales floor is an excellent way to get customers on board and following you
Maintain the lines of communication. Deliver content that has value consistently. If you say you will publish an email newsletter twice a month, commit to that.
Offer promotions via social networks but do not over commercialize your message. The main focus should be content.
Embrace 2 way communication with your customer through services like Twitter. Brands such as Sears and Best Buy use Twitter as way to resolve customer issues rapidly. Answer emails and address issues promptly. Speed is the name of the game when it comes to social media.

The Basics of Search Engine Optimization: What Really Works

The Basics of Search Engine Optimization: What Really Works

Search Engine Optimization, or SEO, is the act of optimizing the content on your website to allow for more efficient search engine indexing. Properly optimized websites are indexed quickly

and receive higher search engine rankings. In turn, these websites receive more targeted traffic.

Many things filter into the optimization of a website. Properly used key words and phrases are major contributors to search engine optimization. Keywords and phrases alone, however, aren’t enough to properly optimize a website for search engine indexing. Everything from META tags to ALT tags on links and images aid in search engine indexing.

Some webmasters try to cram as many keywords as possible into an article or website content in attempt to achieve higher page rankings. Unfortunately, they haven’t done their research. They don’t seem to understand that, in most cases, less is more. The over-use of keywords and phrases can cause pages to be indexed incorrectly or even to be rejected by the search engines. Articles are a great way to add content to a website, but copying an article from a site that relates to yours is illegal. Copying text word-for-word and using it as yours is plagiarism. Not only is plagiarism illegal, but search engines try very hard not to index duplicate content.

When designing your website, in the head tag, using proper META tags isn’t as important to SEO as it used to be. In fact, the meta keyword tag is disregarded by the search engines. However, the head tag of your website should include an optimized title, and meta description.

On-site optimization refers to the elements of the website your viewers see and interact with. From keyword density to other text, links and photo descriptions or alt tags. Photos that make a direct impact on your website should be correctly labeled with optimized text to ensure they are an asset to your website. Text links should also be labeled with optimized alt text. Alt text is what viewers see when they hold their mouse over a photo or a link on a website. Properly optimized alt text will help you to market your website content.

Links, photos and content are very important to your SEO and your overall marketing strategy, but links back to your website are also very important. Unfortunately, the days of profit by link sharing are over. The link sharing system was too easily abused by those looking to make a quick buck. One way to guarantee links back to your site is link building. Link building is simply the process of putting your link on someone else’s website. The best way to do this is through partnerships and directories. This is also where social bookmarking websites come into play. Social networking or social bookmarking sites allow the freedom to add links as comments, text or even banners.

If you are not comfortable with your own writing skills, many SEO firms offer to optimize your website at very reasonable prices. Most take the time to view your website and make suggestions before jumping into the job at hand. Like any other option, always research and find the right firm to fit your needs. Ask for references and other information about any company you entrust your website’s performance to. Not everyone can expect first-page search engine rankings, but it never hurts to put your best foot forward.

I see where another famous Internet marketing guru is revealing new secrets in his latest and greatest make money training course. I am not going to buy it and I did not buy the other new one last week either. You need to ask yourself the question, do you really need more make money training, before you spend more money? There is a couple of things you should know before you consider me anti-educational. First of all I was raised in a home where my father was an elementary principal and school teacher. I grew up in a family where education was emphasized. When I started my Internet marketing career I bought everything I could get my hands on. I may be one of the few people who actually took the time to read most of what I bought. I overloaded several computers with ebooks and reports saved to my hard drive. I was fascinated by making money on the Internet and wanted to learn everything I could. I am not really sure how necessary that is today. If I am constantly purchasing new training courses I personally find it hard to budget the time necessary to get my work done. Plus I’m finding that the information in them is really not that different from one to the next. I have seen one particular Internet marketing guru come out with something along the lines of a training course or new e-book every six months. As I read through it I find it is stuff that I personally could have written myself if I had the ambition! If I was you I would take a step back and analyze where you are at in your own Internet marketing career right now. How many training courses have you bought and never taken the time to go completely through? Is your hard drive full of reports and ebooks you have never read? It’s so easy to purchase things because at the time you feel like it’s really going to make a difference in your business. In reality there really isn’t that many new secrets right now. Internet marketing is so simple that we all let the so called gurus complicate it for us. All you really need is a website or blog, a really good product or products, a way to get paid, and quality traffic every day. Certainly as you break all these down it can be difficult when you first start out. However, as your business gets to rolling, if you spend the majority of your time working on getting backlinks your business will grow. That means concentrating on marketing and advertising all of the time. To do this you probably don’t need to buy another make money course because you already know what needs to be done. If you were to subscribe to updates from a handful of really good blogs you will be kept up to date on anything new in the Internet marketing world!
