The general consensus on, which is better, is that search engines generally give more weight to someone linking to your website using a one-way link and tend to discount the value of you having exchanged links with another site. Whoever is in the Internet business and anyone concerned about Search Engine Optimization cannot deny the importance of link building for the purpose of better Search Engine Optimization. Link building is the process through which you can get the maximum number of back links for your website which in turn would help the betterment of your search engine ranking. Here in this article we shall discuss about some of the link building procedures especially the reciprocal link building.
The reciprocal link building is the process of trading links between two websites. It is somewhat like a deal that one would post the link of the other while the other would do the same in return. But in this matter it is often seen that many websites that link to any and all sites that are willing to link to them. But be sure that this is not much of a good practice. This doesnât work much with the search engines. The search engine have devices to protect themselves from such irrelevant links and thus there are lesser chances of your advancement though you have gathered a number of back links. The fact is that the search engines always seek for relevant links so that they can provide relevant results to their users. While inbound links are part of search engine algorithms but the fact is that the way these links are calculated, changes constantly. They might be doing this in order to protect themselves from irrelevant links as well as to test the ability of the webmasters or the SEOs to manipulate their rankings with reciprocal links. Therefore there is always the need to evolve the strategies of building reciprocal links in order to cope up with the changing algorithms of the search engines. And along with this there are some points that are to be given priority. It is that we should always give priority to the relevancy rather than Page Ranking, which would automatically generate the Page Ranking. It is also to be checked that the recips arenât being blocked.
It is an important thing to check blocked recips. Now the question is what are blocked recips? It is sometimes seen that some of the unethical webmasters or some SEOs block the links back from search engine spiders. By doing this it seems that the links appear to be one-way links as opposed to reciprocal links and their site appears to be having fewer outbound links. Therefore you can easily understand that the websites practicing such means cannot help you in any respect. Hence such websites should be avoided to build reciprocal links. Now to find out whether the site you are trying to build link with is having blocked recips, check the source code for the robots tag. And if it is set to âno index, no followâ then be sure that the page is being blocked and is not much of help to you. In some cases the robots.txt file is being used to block search engine spiders. In that case look for the robots.txt at the root of the domain and you can see the files or folders that that are blocked. Now if you find the links pages and the directory pages in this list then it is better for you not to exchange links with them.
There are also some other tactics that can lead to blocked recips and if such tresses are found it is better not to exchange links with such websites as they canât help you any way.

One of the most vital part of the link building in Search Engine Optimization is the reciprocal link building. To promote the growth in the ranking of the website this is one of the most important things that you need to do. It is somewhat like an agreement that one website would post the link of another website while the other would do the same in return. It is a kind of text or banner link to a site in which both the sites have similar link to each other. It is a kind of agreement based on trust, as the webmasters doesn’t have much time to monitor whether the other site is maintaining the link on their site.
The fact is that too much of reciprocal links doesn’t always work better. Sometimes it is seen that some of the sites have hundreds of banner or text links on a single page and on visiting the linked paged you would find the same scenario. This is most unlikely to have such links, as such a thing can’t always bring more traffic. And therefore it is not a good idea to have lots of reciprocal links. Rather if you try to build up a few such relevant links, that would be a far better thing to do.
Moreover you should always know which site to link to. It is not likely that you go on linking to each and every site that is willing to link with you. Relevancy is the most important thing that is to be kept in mind and you should only link to the handful of most relevant sites. And if you choose sites relevant to the subject of your site, you can better maintain the interest level of your visitors in the topic they have gone through in your site.
However, you should avoid linking with those sites that are having blocked recips. In this case there are some sites who block the back links from the search engine spiders. Perhaps they want to show their sites to be having one-way links, or perhaps they want their site to appear to have fewer outbound links. This is not much a helpful thing for your site.
Moreover it is strongly recommended that reciprocal link building should be the part of the link building strategy not the sole concern of your marketing strategy. However most of the leading search engines check for the quality and the relevancy of the links that you are having. Therefore keep an eye on the relevancy of the sites that you are linking to. You should also often visit their links pages and examine them. Though it sometimes seem to be frustrating and time consuming to find out sites for link building but be sure that you efforts would not be in vain if you are in the right path gather better quality and relevant back links.
In order to get more relevant reciprocal links you can search in Google for link exchange websites which publish directories of website owners who exchange links with each other. But always be careful not to get involved in link firms which link to totally unrelated websites.

To increase the search engine visibility as well as the search engine ranking of your website it is necessary to constantly update your website. Search engine optimization is a process by which your website becomes noticeable as well as gets a higher page rank in the search engines. Link building is one such search engine optimization technique which helps in improving the search engine ranking of your website. The two main important links are back links and reciprocal links. Though the importance of back links are inevitable still the role of reciprocal or two way links cannot be denied. Reciprocal links are sites which link to a website & in turn that website links back to the former. There are two methods by which you can get reciprocal links, one by joining a link exchange website & requesting a reciprocal link & other by adding a link exchange page in your website.
Pros & cons of having reciprocal links:
Reciprocal links are an assured way of bringing steady as well as targeted traffic to your site. Being cost effective it is a great way of web marketing. They generate links quickly & effectively thus saving the precious time which is wasted in looking for a suitable link partner. Though the importance of reciprocal links cannot be denied but the fact holds true that they suffer from many shortcomings which restrict their use as well as effectiveness. On request of a link back webmasters usually do not link back thus enjoying the benefits of an inbound links. Moreover the links are buried to your link page which takes five to ten clicks to view the page. Your anchor text points to another landing page instead of directly pointing to yours when it is placed by the webmasters in their page. This leaves your anchor text with no relevance or worth. Webmasters deceive you by placing your link on their page but leave you with no way & space to navigate back to your site from theirs.
How to make reciprocal links effective:
• By exchanging links with appropriate websites which have high page ranking in the search engines. In other words quality should be maintained instead of quantity.
• The quantity of reciprocal links to your site least matters but the freshness & the exclusiveness of the content plays a vital role. The content should be knowledgeable as well as informative.

Google Strikes Again! Why Reciprocal Links Are Now Worthless

It is common knowledge that Google went from content based ranking to a link based ranking algorithm a few years ago. The way most people discovered this was by seeing their pages disappear from page one overnight. Unfortunately that same lesson is being learned again today as Google shifts from an “all link” model of determining popularity to one of “inbound only.”
It should not come as a big surprise. It?s been happening slowly for the past year or so but is now in overdrive. Pages that have dominated top spots for years are suddenly disappearing without a trace and linking is the key. In short, reciprocal links no longer count as they once did. Google expects to see one way inbound links in its top ranked sites. The reason apparently being that worthy sites can attract links without having to reciprocate.
Talk about a popularity contest! It reminds me of junior high school on Valentines Day where the most popular students would be buried in cards while sending out only a few of their own. Google even refers to inbound links as a form of ?votes.?
So how does Google judge the value of inbound links? Let?s just say a nod from the prom king or queen is a lot more desirable than one from the kid who had to escort his first cousin to the last school dance due to lack of options. But even still, every vote counts even if just a little.
I agree that it is sad and unfair that quality of content counts for so little but Google, perhaps naively, believes the links (or votes) will go to the most deserving sites naturally. I can?t change Google?s mind, but I can help you crack Google?s link value code. Just follow these simple steps.
First: Know your link targets. You want pages whose topics relate to your topic and with the highest PR possible.
Note: PR refers to Google PageRank which is a value assigned to the page on a scale of 1 to 10. Pages begin at 0 and earn PR points for various reasons. There are plenty of ones and twos but anything above three gets scarcer and more valuable. You can learn a page?s PR by using the Google Toolbar available at http://toolbar.google.com.
Second: Do not bother linking just to the home page, as was the proffered method not long ago. Google now likes to see deep links so make the majority of your links go to pages at least one level deep below the home page. And be sure that page is named after its main keyword, such as ?main-keyword.htm? or ?main-keyword.htm.?
Third: Make sure the pages you are linking to, link back to your home page by using their main keyword as anchor text.
Note: Anchor text is simply a clickable text link. It is usually a different color; such as blue and underlined to show it is a link. You want your main keyword to be a clickable link leading from the topic page to the home page.
Fourth: Be sure the inbound links you build consist of your main keywords embedded in anchor text.
Recap: So if ?online business services? was the main keyword the words ?online business services? would be embedded as anchor text leading to a page called ?online-business-services.htm? and that page would in turn link to the home page using ?online business services? as its anchor text link.
Fifth: Google scans not only the area immediately surrounding the anchor text but also the whole page of text around it. It will be looking for consistency of topic throughout the page so be sure your link is coming from a page closely related to the topic of the keyword you are targeting.
Note: This last part is one of the most important because if you can control what is on the page you are linking from, you can rocket to the top of Google. You can do this through blog postings, article publishing and even simple directory submissions. If you are in a hurry, try a pre-packaged solution that removes the guesswork. I use a combo training and automated software system called ?Link A Minute? (http://www.linkaminute.com) that does the trick for me. There are some good ones out there so look around and find one you like. Just do not try any link farms if you value any future placement on Google.
Follow these tips and you can steal a top spot on Google in no time.

Reciprocal Linking, A Good or Bad Idea?

A SEO (search engine optimization) tactic that is frequently used in an attempt improve website popularity is website linking. A link is a connection between two different websites. This method has been one of the best ways to get free traffic and is probably one of the main reasons of its common use.
Many jumped on the bandwagon and started to link to someone’s site for the favor of linking back to their website; this is called reciprocal linking. After all, the search engines just looked at the number of sites that linked to you, assuming the more links you had, the better your site was. Of course, it didn’t take people long to start getting as many sites as possible to link to them, no matter whether the sites were relevant or not, just to improve their ranking.
Ah, but our good friends at Google and other search engines figured out quickly that this was going on. They are now “policing” reciprocal link exchanges and de-valuing links from non-relevant sites. As you might think, the strategy of reciprocal linking is an old tactic and placed in the archives of SEO tactics. However, I see so many still promoting this outdated tactic and you should stay away from reciprocal link methods. Today, the best link is to have a one-way link from a relevant website coming into your site, rather than having to reciprocate the link and give them one back.
How to Achieve One-Way Links
Keep in mind that it is much better having a one-way link from a RELATED site than ten one-way links from most sites, especially competitors.
Here is the SECRET or key to achieving those incoming one-way links. Differentiate yourself from all the other sites out there. Now, that sounds like a daunting and almost impossible task given the nature of the internet. Give importance to your website by offering good content that your visitors will value. Michael Cheney teaches this algorithm, “Good content creates traffic which translates into sales.”
It’s vital that you understand how search engines work to achieve the success you desire.
Derek Gehl speaks about the “basics” of the search engines.
1. Algorithm – this is a “formula” used by search engines to figure out how relevant your site is for people doing the searching. The search engine will look at your site’s content, your keywords, your inbound links, and so on, and then calculate your position on the search results page.
2. Page Rank – this is calculated by the search engines and is a measure of how they value your site. To calculate it, Google and friends look at factors like your content, and the number of one-way links pointing to your site. The links are an important factor in the calculation. The more other sites consider you to be a valuable and relevant resource (and therefore link to you), the more Google will think so too.
3. Link Popularity – now that we know what links are, consider the popularity of those links as defined in this article; one-way links.
4. Keyword Phrase – this is an extension of “keywords.” It is based upon the research that when people look for keywords to target they are looking for keyword phrases, which contain 2, 3, 4 (or more) words. The value in using keyphrases is that you can be a lot more specific about what your site (or individual pages within the site) is about. In other words, if someone is searching for “televisions” they are more likely to look for “plasma televisions” or “Sony Bravia plasma televisions.”
5. Site Structure – This means the way your website is organized, how the pages are linked together and how your menu works (some people refer to site structure as the “information architecture”).
The structure of your site helps your visitors move more freely through the pages. It also allows them to find the information they’re looking for more quickly. This can be helpful in improving your rankings in the search engines. A well structured site that has all of the relevant pages carefully linked together is ranked as relevant and related content in the eyes of the search.
Link popularity is only one aspect of creating a successful website for ranking within the search engines. If you follow this outline then you will differentiate yourself from your competitors and that daunting task will become more encouraging.
If you link to someone’s site, and they link back to you, that’s considered a reciprocal link… and the search engines do NOT like them. It has become critically important to get those 1-way INCOMING links from sites that are related to your niche. Just remember, some kinds of links (one-way) can help your search engine placement, while others (reciprocal) might actually hurt it.

Reciprocal linking is one of the accepted methods adopted by webmasters to build traffic, increase link popularity and improve page rank. It is a known fact that in recent times search engines have begun to place more importance to one-way inbound link and consider it to be superior to a reciprocal link. It is also known that search engines do appreciate reciprocal links if the links are from quality theme related websites.
Webmasters receive regular requests for reciprocal link exchange either by e-mail or through their websites where provision is made for the submission of requests for reciprocal link exchange. Why are most requests rejected to the utter disappointment and dismay of webmasters of new websites anxious to increase their link popularity and page rank?
Some of the major reasons for the refusal to reciprocate a link exchange request can be attributed to:
1. When a reciprocal link exchange request is received, the obvious thing the webmaster will do is to visit the website making a request and try to identify what this website is all about. If the request is from a website with an irrelevant theme, the chances are the request will be turned down. The reason is that search engines will not give him any credit for linking with an irrelevant site and he cannot expect any targeted traffic from such a website either.
2. Poor content of your website is another major reason for the rejection of your reciprocal link exchange request. Websites with good quality theme related content are seldom rejected. In fact webmasters appreciate reciprocal link exchange requests from non competitive theme related websites since these sites will provide their own visitors with useful website experience and also receive targeted traffic.
3. If your website is with a PR zero or with a low Page Rank and if you request a link exchange with a high PR site, unfortunately your request will most probably be turned down. The reason being that the high PR site will not benefit by linking with your site. One saving grace here is that if you have excellent theme related content and indicate that you are growing fast some websites will link to you hoping that you will achieve high PR rank soon.
4. Most webmasters want to know whether your link directory is easily accessible to your website visitors. Hiding it in a maze of other information will not help. Your link page should be only two clicks away from your home page. A webmaster with a good link directory set-up will not be interested in complying with your request if your link directory is not easily accessible.
5. Having several dozens of links in each page is another reason for the rejection of a link request. If you wish to succeed in your request then you should ensure that you categorize the link directory and have not more than twentyfive links to a page.
It should now be obvious why most requests for reciprocal link exchange are turned down. Having good quality unique content is the best way to start your reciprocal link campaign and succeed in your efforts.

Role of Reciprocal Links in Seo

After proving that link exchanges really work to help search engine rankings, I was bombarded with requests asking about my successful method for getting reciprocal links. Instead of answering each person individually, I decided to put up an article that will help everyone who is strugling with getting responses to their link request emails.
And that’s the big problem with link exchange requests, isn’t it? They are often ignored. If you have the words “link exchange” or “reciprocal link” or anything like that in the email subject, the email will be unceromoniously deleted by 95% of webmasters. The other 5% probably aren’t worth trading links with.
Why is that? It’s because thousands of webmasters are using automated tools to crank out the link request emails, trying to get links to junk sites that have little real content and even less value. Because of this, webmasters have been conditioned to ignore link request emails.
First, Don’t Ask For Link: Pay A Compliment and Give a Link
I solved this problem by not asking for a link in my “link request” email. In fact, I don’t even mention a link at all!
Does it seem counter-intuative to not ask for a link request in my emails which are designed to get a link to my site? It probably does. But if you ask for a link, you’ll just get your email deleted, so you need to take an alternate route.
My subject line is usually something like:
“I’d love to add your site to my directory!”
Then, in the message body, I tell the webmaster what I like about their site and ask them to add their site to my directory. (Note: You should always pay the webmaster a personalized compliment so that they know your request wasn’t cranked out by a machine.)
Wouldn’t you be much more motivated to open up an email that says the person would love to add your site to their directory than to open one that says “Link exchange request” or something impersonal like that?
They Add Their Link To Your Directory, And Then …
Once the webmaster adds their link to your directory, only then do you ask for a link back. Once they’ve already been given a generous link by you, most often those same webmasters will return the favor. In fact, I generally see about a 70% reciprocal link rate.
For the other 30%, they are still a valuable addition to my directory, so I keep them in there, but I mark their links with the rel=”nofollow” attribute so I don’t lose any PageRank for a webmaster who won’t return the favor.
Do The Math
In the typical, unproductive scenario, you might send out 100 emails asking for a link back. You might get 10% to open the email at all, and of those who do only 20% actually swap links with you. That’s 100 emails times 10% who open, or 10 people who actually read the email. Of those 10, 20% swap links with you, so you end up with only 2 links. Ouch!
Using my method, I get a solid 50-60% who open the email, followed by 70% who swap links with me. So I end up with 100 times 50%, or 50 email readers, times 70%. So I end up with 35 links. That’s more than 17 times as productive as the clunky old method.
But it still takes work, which is why I recommend using SEO Elite to automate the process of finding and emailing potential link partners.
