Four Tips For Building Customer Relationships
Four Tips For Building Customer Relationships
One of the biggest reasons why many businesses fail is that they fail to build long lasting relationships with their customers. It is not enough to just sell to a customer; it is imperative that you make him come back to you again and again, and perhaps even recommend friends and family members. The cornerstone of developing a strong relationship with a customer is good customer service and networking. Here are a few tips to implement them in your business:
1. Take your business online, if you haven’t already done so. In this day and age, if you aren’t online, you are missing out on a huge chunk of customers. But it is not enough to just have a boring, static site. You must show people the personal side of your business (remember the old maxim: people buy from other people, not companies). A blog about your business, or the people behind it can be a great way to reach out and communicate with prospective clients.
2. In the same vein, get a profile on Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn. Make sure that you’re listed on Yelp, CitySearch and Google Maps. These are the new avenues of discovery and communication. Keep your Twitter and Facebook accounts updated with the latest happenings in your business. This is another way of letting people know that you are a real company with real people behind it, not some brainless borg.
3. Respond to customer queries as quickly as possible. I have a rule of the thumb with email: if I can respond to it within 2 minutes, I will reply back immediately. Never keep email hanging around for later, and never hold support queries longer than they should. Your customers will appreciate the fast service and this single factor alone can make the difference between a regular and a one-time customer.
4. Invest in people who are good at dealing with people, especially your sales staff. Too many times I’ve come across a store that had rude or indifferent staff. I’ve made it a point to never go back there again. One of my favorite stores not only sells amazing stuff (its a bakery), but also has some great people behind the counter that greet me enthusiastically, never fail to give me exactly what I want, and are always good for a friendly word. If you can find people like this, hang on to them, no matter what.

One of the first things to do to get more twitter followers is to tweet something particularly interesting, then follow it with the words “Please retweet”. This will allow others to retweet the message. Don’t do this often, however as the more often you do this, the likelihood will be that you will be ignored. Another good idea would be to participate in #followfriday. This basically means that there is a list of five people on every Friday to follow. Let’s talk for a minute about how to build relationships so that you get more followers. One of the ways to do that, is to tweet about useful things that are useful to either yourself or someone else. You also need to interact with people in order to get more people.
Interaction is one of the reasons how you get more twitter followers. Something else to remember is to be yourself. People like connecting with unique people. If you are an average cookie cutter type, then you may not get as many followers as you would if you let your individuality stand out. Relationship building consists of being yourself, interaction and information. These three things are the cornerstone of getting more people to follow you on Twitter. Interaction consists of talking with people on Twitter such as answering questions, discussing common goals or likes, giving helpful hints and advice.
The more that you interact with people, the more you are looked at as a person that cares. You need to follow the above advice as well as other tips in this article to build relationships and to get more twitter followers. All this takes is time and interaction to be able to build relationships. Once those relationships are built, then you have a concrete basis for yourself or your business. This kind of relationship building goes a long way, especially if you are a business. This allows you to grow your client base and add more clients to that base over time. Relationship building isn’t that hard, and if done correctly can last for a lifetime.
Twitter For Business – Building Relationships
Your business goal on Twitter is to provide customers with what they want and need. To do so, you need to develop relationships with your core 20% clientele base/joint venture folks and to develop trust and earn a reputation for being the go-to business for the other 80% in your niche.
Developing trust and relationships takes time and is based on a bit more than spamming sales pitches. Therefore, if relationship building is the goal, self-serving tweets should be in the minority. Alternate kinds of tweets fall into a limited number of categories.
The Other Kinds of Tweets
Questions: Asking questions is a great possibility, though there is an art to asking questions that can reasonably be addressed in 140 characters. Humor: One can of course inject a bit of tasteful humor or respond to humor. Retweets: Retweeting others’ tweets compliments and benefits both the tweeter and the retweeter as long as the frequency of retweets is not overdone. In moderation, a retweet forms an independent witness to the value of the original tweet. Thanks: Expressing genuine gratitude or praise is always a good thing too. Useful Stuff: Then there is the plethora of news, quotes, and tips which may be interesting or useful to the reader. Some of it should be self-serving (or you are in the wrong business). Links: Include tweets with links to continue the conversation on blogs and announcements of webinars and conferences. Links can also be to further helpful information related to words that comprise the rest of the tweet. Various services exist to shorten URL’s so as to take up fewer of the 140 character limit Twitter has established. Engage in their conversations: Address their concerns. Be a listener. Don’t just talk. Answer questions if you have a ready answer or can readily research an answer.
Frequency of Tweets
Another issue important to developing relationships is the number of times each tweet is given. I’m not talking about the stuff you do for individuals once, but there are tweets that can be given multiple times. The question is how many without turning into annoying spam.
I am thinking of four factors to consider.
One, your followers are not always on Twitter at the time you are tweeting. Repeating a tweet at different times of day increases the chances your followers will see your tweet.
Second, consider which time zones your want to reach. Tweeting when your target audience is most likely to be asleep or busy elsewhere is not wise. Lunch time, evenings, and weekends often are better times.
Third, tweets will pass by the eyes of your followers at different rates depending on how many people your followers are following. One of your followers with a hundred followers will not see as many tweets flying by as a person following five thousand. For a given tweet, you can look like a spammer to the one following a hundred at the same time that you barely register on the radar of someone following five thousand. Striking a moderate balance between extremes is important.
Four, be persistent over a long period. Sooner or later most of your followers will become familiar with you. If your persistence consists in spam, your followers will drop out, but a with bit of creativity in providing real value, persistence pays off.
Why Build Relationships on Twitter?
He is by no means a Social Media Purist, but still he teaches what he considers the “right way” to interact on Twitter & other Social Media platforms (hint: it ain’t by spamming people your offers). Harris has a number of years of success in the internet marketing realm and I feel very honored to have him as a guest author today. With that … here’s Harris’ blog post entitled “Why Build Relationships on Twitter?”:Okay, here’s the real magic of using Social Media, like Twitter, for marketing purposes…You can build relationships with and connect to REAL PEOPLE. Oh, Big Advertising, the trade winds are a shifting. Consumers are way past the tipping point now where they tend to trust ‘Regular Joes’ now more than Big Giant Corporations. My guess is, that if you’re reading this article, you’re probably more likely to be a Regular Joe than the CEO of a Fortune 500. (Dare I coin a new phrase? CE-Joe? Hmm, no – I’ll pass.)So, the real glory of Twitter is not so much that you can easily build a list of followers as I discussed in my last post. It’s the fact that you can build RELATIONSHIPS with them. And this is where you, the Regular Joes, have an advantage! What I’m going to do for you in this post is get you started creating those relationships. I’m going to give you a daily process that, if you follow it, will easily turn your Twitter account into a magnet in whatever industry or niche you may be in.In some of my previous posts, I already got you started on the path to Twitter greatness. So, let’s recap my 4 main rules of engagement shall we? 1. Get Followers 2. Build Relationships with them 3. Get them Clicking & Retweeting and… 4. Make Money. In my last blog post I talked about how to get tons of followers and gave you some (hopefully) compelling reasons why you should bother. If you took action as I suggested, you will have literally thousands of new followers very soon. So, Now what? This brings us to the next phase of this Twitter takeover. It’s time to start to really build a relationship with your followers. But first let’s talk about why it’s so important to do so.So here’s the question:Who do YOU trust?Sure, you might say your Mom or Dad, but really for most things… you trust your closest friends. What we’re talking about here is who you trust for recommendations. But to put a finer point on that and put it within the framework of a business discussion:Who do people buy from? People (and companies) they trust! Therefore, as you’re building your relationships on Twitter or any other social networking site, that’s actually what you’re doing… building TRUST. And it’s imperative that you do.”How?”, you may ask. It’s not that hard really. You’re going to want to first start by engaging your followers. This can be as easy as a simple and personal welcome message when they follow you. Some people I know actually do this manually (by hand) for each and every follower that they obtain. I can see the validity of this method – but it’s awful time-consuming. Especially considering that there are a number of services out there that can help you do this. My personal favorite is Tweetlater.com. It’s free and easy to use. Not only does it send out automatic welcome messages for you, it also allows you to schedule tweets to go out in the future among many other very powerful features. Go check it out Tweetlater, it’s an incredible free tool. http://scrnch.me/57ck3You’ll want to be sure to create a welcome message that adds value or engages your new follower. Otherwise, you’re just creating spam straight to their direct message inbox. Stay away from even attempting to tell your new follower about any product or service that you might have. It’s a sure way to turn them off and have them unfollow you immediately. What you want to do is get them replying back to you right away. For instance, ask a question that’s easy for them to answer – their favorite gadget, football team, or whatever’s appropriate to your interests. There is some debate about automatic welcome messages and I’ve had several discussions (some heated) with people on Twitter about it. The bottom line is this: You must give value and further your cause in some way. It’s a delicate balance. You can’t just say “Hey look what I got, don’t you wanna buy one”. And be warned, “Hey thanks for the follow, looking forward to tweeting with you” ends up being just as useless to you in the long run as well. Finally, what I really wanted to do was give you a quick “daily process” that you can follow to really ensure interaction on Twitter. Feel free to add in more than this if you want to, but if you do this each and every day, you can be certain you’ll have a growing base of people you’re starting to build a relationship with.Daily Process For Your Twitter Account 1. Read your @mentions and reply to all of them. 2. Post what you’re actually doing or thinking about right now. 3. Post a favorite quotation, recent news link, or just basic info (this can be from online or offline resources) HINT: Go to http://alerts.google.com and set up some alerts for your interests to be automatically sent to your inbox. 4. Scan your own timeline & look for conversations to jump into. 5. Go to http://search.twitter.com, search for topics of interest to you, and get into a few conversations there as well. While you’re there, go ahead and search for your own name and/or company name to see if anyone is talking about you
6. Check your direct messages (DMs) and reply to them as well. 7. Repeat this at at least 3 times a day.In a future blog post, I’ll share with you some awesome secrets about how to get your Twitter friends to click on stuff you send out, and even more importantly how to get them ReTweeting like crazy as well.http://scrnch.me/57ck3If you like what you’re reading here, you’re going to love my Coup de Twitter system.
