Tips for Using the Right Font in Your Web Site Design

A very important part of a web site design is the text and the font that is used in it. There are quite a few types of fonts for you to choose from for your website. And in many cases, it is the choice of the font that differentiates between professional web site designs and novice pieces of work.
The size of the font that you use is direct variation to attention where it is said that body text should never go above 16 pixels. This is because most surfers don’t have the patience to scroll a page repeatedly just to read a paragraph. The best way for you to choose the size of your font would be by its position in the web page.
Maintain uniformity in the size of text font
Titles or headers of a page should be from 20 to 28 pixels in size as this is a noticeable size that is not distractive.
You could have the title as the largest font while sub-titles are capitalized and of a font that is larger than the text font but smaller than the main title. Links, if any, could be the same size as the text font of the web site design, but of a different color.
The choice of the right color is another important aspect of web site design as the color of the text invokes different feelings in your body. Some colors can release calming chemicals while lots of black indicates power, authority and in some cases, evil.
Use purple to depict royalty and power in your website design
White is related to purity, neutrality and safety while gray is often associated with taxes, death and depression. If you want to depict movement and excitement in your web site design, you have to use red. However as this is an attention grabbing color that creates a loud impression, it should be used in moderation.
Blue is the popular option for web site designs as it is related to loyalty and respect. Green is linked with wealth, nature and superiority and is used extensively in hospitals to calm patients. If you want to symbolize happiness, good times and sanguinity, you have to use yellow in your website design.
The most ostentatious and showy color for your web site design is orange, which also has links with ambition. Purple is used for depicting royalty, power, ambition, attitude and majesty in the website design.
The typeface of the font used in the web sire design should be practical, simple and easy to read. The most popular option to day is Arial as it is a sans-serif typeface that has great proportions, is easy to read and looks great with the right vertical spacing. If you want to highlight important information in the web site design, typeface should be bold, italic and oblique.
On keeping all these points in mind about the font and typeface for your web site design, you will reach an interesting and attractive website that is both informative and clear to read.

The most basic component of a Web site is its navigational structure. This is the oldest and most common factor in Web design, but also the most underestimated. Simply stated, if the visitor cannot navigate or negotiate a Web site with ease, and if the information is difficult to access, then they will leave. It takes only a few months of reviewing select Web sites for the Webby Awards to discover that even in this age of advanced Web design, most designers fail to achieve navigational organization beyond the very basics on their sites. Instead, it seems that the art of creating effective navigation has been superseded by the desire to host the latest technologies and communication addons. Yet, visiting a site that has videos, Flash and all the bells and whistles is a fruitless experience if sufficient attention has not been paid to the navigational structure of the site. Encountering this hurdle is particularly frustrating when the site is extensive, which makes searching for specific information hidden in a mysterious maze of links and directions time consuming.
An apt term has been coined to describe sites that neglect the subtleties of navigational structure: Mystery Meat Navigation. This name refers to those sites that provide esoteric and mysterious forms of navigation under the false premise that âthis is coolâ. For example, sites that do not clearly differentiate between elements on the pages that are navigational and those that are not. On these sites, one only discovers that an element contains navigational information on mouseover, when new links and info suddenly and mysteriously slide or pop out. Exploring sites like these becomes a game for users to find the hidden links, which is fine if it is a games site but very frustrating if you are attempting to explore the site to search for information or products. There are a host of sites that have been labeled as âmystery meat’ and these can be found at 10 Worst Web Site Uses of Navigation for 2007 â The Final List.
Not all sites are this obscure and many are competent enough in maintaining a basic level of navigational competence. However, most sites on the Web today have forgotten the art of effective navigational design. Even though a site may have an eye-catching and intriguing interface, this means very little if the navigational structure is not capable of providing the necessary direction and guidance to the viewer. The word âintuitiveâ is often used to describe the ideal experience that a viewer should have in exploring a site. This rather overused term is still applicable in 2008 and the aim of good navigation is to make the experience of browsing the web site seamless and virtually self-explanatory.
The experts stress that creating an effective navigational structure is much more than just adding a few links at the top or side of the page. What has been forgotten is that site navigation and structure go together and should therefore be integrated. This is not much of a problem if your site is only a few pages in size. Larger sites need that vital integration between the structure and organization of the site as well as the navigational components.
To achieve a fully integrated site that flows seamlessly and in which the different navigational structures are linked takes detailed planning and time. The Web site designer has to put himself in the place of the visitor and attempt to anticipate how that viewer experiences and explores the site. Questions have to be asked such as: if there are large sections of data on the site can these be accessed without the viewer having to guess where to click next? Are the side or topbar links integrated with the content in each page so that they lead intuitively and almost spontaneously from one page or section to the next?
The process of navigation design must take into account categories, subcategories, and the way that these are linked to relevant information that appears on each particular page. An example of well-integrated navigation is WebMd at htp://women.webmd.com/default.htm. This site manages to control and provide easy access to a huge amount of data and categories, without making the site confusing at any point. Another site worth looking at is RoyalMarines.mod.uk, where attention has been given to navigation and structure on each page, including links that guide the visitor to sections relating to the content on that page.
Of course, it is understood that poor navigation not only translates into users clicking away but most importantly to the loss of potential sales and revenue. In todayâs super-slick, fast online environment, the site that is not immediately accessible and which cannot be explored âintuitivelyâ is simply relegated to the growing pile of unvisited Web pages.
So how does one go about ensuring good navigation? There are no simple quick-fix solutions here. The art of navigation is to scrutinize your site through the eyes of the visitor. Pre-planning is essential when creating an effective, comprehensive site layout and navigational structure. The way the site is organized into sections or categories should correspond to the way the navigation is organized. One has to anticipate what a visitor would look for on entering a specific section or page. The designer should be aware of questions like; where would the visitor go in response to content or info on that page, and then provide logical links or access to related pages and sections. Many expert designers insist that a site should âtell a storyâ to facilitate straightforward browsing and navigation. In other words, the site should have a structure that follows logically and makes immediate sense to the visitor. A simple rule is: âAny good global navigation scheme should, at a glance, answer the top three questions every user has at the back of their mind when landing on any page:
Where am I? (Present)
Where can I go? (Future)
Where have I been? (Past)
There are numerous âtips and tricksâ that relate to the creating of an effective navigational structure. Some designers insist that visual or graphic icons or appropriate components make the best navigation sense, while others view text as the best option to support clear and simple navigation. However, using easily recognizable graphics or images as the mainstay of your navigational design has certain advantages. These include the fact that visual elements draw the eye of the visitor and add aesthetic appeal. Visual elements can also be designed to provide the viewer with a snapshot of the site. On the other hand, excessive use of visual elements takes up bandwidth and tends to slow down a large site.
There are many tips and tricks related to improving site navigation. One of the most significant is: avoid concealing important information aimed at customers and prospects on the site. Another is: no single page should be further than three clicks away from any other page.
While these tips are useful they should not obscure the larger issue which concerns the integration between navigation, overall site organization and structure. Bare in mind that navigation design is not something to be taken lightly; incorporating a few links at the top of each page does not constitute good navigation. In essence, navigation in Web design is an art form that requires complete awareness of the potential needs and requirements of the visitor.

Your product must be designed so that people will continue to rave about it. The cyberspace consumer is a different breed of customers, one that you must actively and continually attract the attention of. In essence, your product must literally sell itself, In addition to this important product attribute, all supporting write ups, testimonials and descriptions must anchor upon your products ’saleability’.
Tip no 2. Identify your Market
You must remember to define and focus on the specific market you will be targeting to sell your product. Matching the wrong product to the wrong target market spells disaster and could lead you to floundering online and wondering why your sales figures and page hits have barely moved. There is such a thing as designing a product for the ‘highly excitable market’. If you have identified a market that is profitable and generates sales easily, you should design a product that appeals to them and keeps them coming back for more.
Tip No 3. Market, Market, Market!
Now, you should never just depend on people to come to your website just because it’s there. You could be selling a fantastic product but it would still be worthless if no one knew about it. Actively promote your website using the internet is a valuable commodity. Give out information freely, like e-brochures and e-books, linking back to your website. Viral marketing, affiliate marketing and utilising search engines are just some of the methods you should use to enhance the saleability of your product.
Your website should also have a winning and selling combination of a good design, good copy and excellent layout. Your website is your mouthpiece and essentially the salesman that would close the deals. A boring, convoluted website sells poorly, and it doesn’t bring across the message or the ‘hook’ that would eventually influence the purchasing decision.
Also, your domain name is extremely important. It decides the identity and brand of your product. I will advise you not to use free hosting and make an investment to get a proper web hosting service. The integrity of the website will determine the purchasing decision of the consumer who eventually visits your website.
Also, remember to build a database. This is akin to online ‘list building’ and is important in gaining a rock solid foundation of consumers you can repeatedly get your message across to, especially if new products and services are introduced. Design your website so that information can be collected, this usually includes names and emails, but always ensure the privacy of the end user. Another thing, always create multiple streams to your website, increasing the number of page hits, and thus increasing the chances of a sale.

On the road to achieving prominent search engine placement, many webmasters are stuck in that SEO fork in road when it comes to building relevant site content. The chief concern is whether to focus on building page content or incoming links. There are many arguments for both sides when discussing building content versus link building campaigns, but from a practical stand point, shouldn’t the primary concern be aimed towards gaining prominent placement on the search engines using any legitimate means available?
Relevancy is the number 1 aspect of your website when viewed through the eyes of the search engine. The amount of relevant incoming links to your site is how Google determines and awards PageRank. In addition to having relevant organic content on your pages, incorporating link building into your SEO strategy is not only valuable, but prudent as well.
The argument regarding link building is which method works better and will deliver the highest PR value. For those who are new to the use of site linking there are 2 methods of link building: one way links, and reciprocal links.
One way linking building is exactly what its name says: Links point to your site from another domain or site on the Internet. Google and other search engines consider one way or incoming links as an indication of the value or importance of your site’s content. Incoming links can target your site’s home page, specific pages, or both. A perfect example of the use of an incoming link is a trackback or comment about your site, or a page on your site that is the result from a discussion or comment on an Internet forum or blog site.
Reciprocal links or link exchanges are created when 2 sites link to one another. There are no requirements for this link building relationship other than both sites continue linking to each other in order to maintain the reciprocal relationship. The downside to using reciprocal links is that relevancy is not required in order to create the linking relationship. Google and other search engines favor links that are rich in relevancy over generic reciprocal links. It is possible however to build relevant reciprocal links.
The next concern webmasters face is where they can obtain relevant links for their website. There are quite many options available online, some in the form of paid software and others offer linking services. The method in which you choose should be investigated thoroughly before including it into your site, and above all, remember that your link building campaign should be based on relevancy.

How to Generate Free Traffic to Your Site

How to generate free traffic to your website, you wonder? There are many, many ways to get traffic to your website. However, the trick is to get the “right” visitors to your site. You want to look for the people who are looking for you. If you are in business, then the ultimate goal of your website is to make sales and generate profits. So it’s not enough to just bring people to your site, you want to convert those visitors into leads and eventually into customers. You can just widen the pool of potential visitors by utilizing traffic exchanges and safelist advertising, for example. These methods will certainly bring a flood of traffic to your site. But these visitors usually have a high bounce rate, because they are not looking for what you have offer. They have another motivation for being on your website, like earning visitors to their sites. So we want to focus on ways to drive targeted visitors to your site at no cost. There are many ways to do this as well, but three of the most effective ways today are Search Engine Optimization (SEO), Content Marketing, and Social Networking.
Search Engine Optimization
SEO, as known as Search Engine Marketing is the process of making adjustments to your website to make it more search-engine friendly. This is done through both on-page and off-page methods. On-page methods include adjustments to your header, description, meta keywords, anchor-text, and content to make it easier for the search engine spiders to crawl your site and assess your content. You can also create search-engine friendly URLs with different keywords on different pages. You can also create links on every page to other pages on your site. Another trick is to create a site index to make it even easier for the spiders.
Off-page methods of SEO are concerned with building bridges back to your site through back-links or inbound links. One of the most popular ways to create backlinks is through content marketing strategies.
Content Marketing
If there is one thing Google loves, it is content; relevant and useful information for people using their search engine. Content marketing is a pretty broad area which includes blogging, article marketing, and video marketing to name a few.
Blogs (short for Web logs) are hands down the easiest type of site for search engines to rank on the internet, as well as about the easiest site for an internet newbie to setup and administer. The key to generating traffic with your blog is to consistently post new content and share/promote it. You can do this by using social bookmarking services like ShareMe and Onlywire.
Article Marketing is the premier way to create massive backlinks to your sites. Not only can you post your article on your blog, but you can submit your articles to hundreds of high-ranking article directories. You can use the resource box for your article on these directories to link back to the original article or your blog. When the search engine sees all of these links back to your site, it will boost your page rank.
You can also create backlinks with video marketing. You can also upload any videos you create to high-ranking video sharing directories like YouTube or Metacafe. And just like with the blogs, you can share your articles and videos with social bookmarking services on the Social Networks.
Social Networking
Social Networking embodies one of the most important aspects of marketing, that is building relationships with your prospects. Let’s face it, people usually only do business with people that they like and trust. Social Networking sites are the ideal places to develop and maintain relationships. Besides, sites like Facebook, MySpace, LinkedIn, Twitter, etc. are among the most popular websites in the world and are growing in popularity every day. As I mentioned earlier you can share your content on these sites; or you can simply use them to tell people about your site and build bridges back to your site.
The key on these sites is to be an active participant, but not be a pushy salesperson. Go back and read the first two sentences of this section if you don’t understand why you shouldn’t be pushing your business at total strangers. It’s called a ’social’ network for a reason.
I would advise you to join a couple of groups or forums related to your niche in these networks and observe how people relate to each other. And then jump in and participate in these conversations. Give people a chance to get to know you. And if you can contribute useful information in these forums, pretty soon you will find people looking to join you. Remember, people don’t like to be sold.
Conclusion
So the key to generating free targeted traffic on the internet is to provide useful information to people and search engines. I believe that it is more important to create content that people like though. Because people can create the one thing that the search engines can’t, and that is viral traffic. For example, if I found a really cool site, why wouldn’t I want to share it with my friends and other people who I think might like it? And if you provide people on the social networks with useful information, there is a good chance that they might visit your site looking for more. I believe that if people love your stuff, the search engines will certainly catch up. Besides, people buy and search engines don’t.

4. Keywords. Be sure you have a list of phrases you would like used on the page. Also bear in mind that the keywords relevant to page 1 stay on page 1 while page 2 keywords stay on page 2, and so on. This is to guarantee every page is different in its offering, avoiding redundancy. The process of advertising and marketing products and services online is commonly referred to as Internet marketing. Popular modes of online marketing include Search Engine Marketing (SEM), affiliate advertising, email marketing, banners, blogs, interactive advertising, and information articles.
SEM is the largest subsection of the marketing strategy pool. It seeks to boost the visibility of a website on a search engine and thus garner more traffic onto the site. The tools of SEM are search engine optimization (SEO), pay per click marketing and paid listing.
SEO allows marketers to improve the quantity and quality of the search engine rankings or ‘hits’ by optimizing the site structure and content for easy identification by relevant searches performed by search engines and people. The idea is to be able to reach your website’s target market by using the correct set of optimization tools to be listed on the appropriate searches and on the right search engines. Some common ways to achieve SEO:
• Keyword basics – Selecting relevant, widely used keyword sets and making certain that the number of times these keywords appear in the content ensures a good search engine ranking. This is known as keyword density or saturation SEO, and the belief is that when search engines ‘spider’ or scan through content on a site, they look for a certain percentage of keyword density (say 2-5%).
• Website architecture – A clear, understandable structure and a site map may encourage search engines and people to spider or scan the site effectively and easily.
• Link Strategies – A marketer can create links that point towards the page, also known as ‘inbound links’ that should be relevant, keyword-oriented and plentiful to direct traffic towards the web page and improve its search engine rank.
• Optimized content – Well-organized and grouped content and reduced graphics for quick loading time is said to be another subset of criteria for SEO.
• Though algorithms used for search engine rankings vary, are kept secret and are said to keep changing, an SEO consultant can apply some to your site based on experience and analysis.
Pay per click (PPC) advertising or sponsored searches are sites or pages that are displayed in search engine results pages, which the advertiser pays to have displayed. Some of the major search engines such as Google will display these separately from the ‘organic’ or SEO-based pages. The marketer only pays when the link is clicked on, hence the name ‘pay per click’.
A hybrid of SEO and PPC is paid listings. The advertiser pays a fee that ensures the website is listed in the organic search results but does not promise the ranking or placement.
Email advertising is an instant, low cost way to reach your customer and build awareness of your product or services. It can also result in conversion in the form of requests for information or customer acquisition. According to the Direct Marketing Association, businesses in the US spent 0 million on email marketing in 2006. It entails advertising to past, present and potential customers via email and experts claim that it ranks next only to SEM in efficacy.
Banner ads, blogs and informative articles are a part of Internet marketing that help to create awareness and link to related services or products. Websites sell ad space for this purpose.
