Below you will find a personal collection of some of my favorite golden nuggets from the country’s brightest minds in the areas of startups, small business, corporate finance, credit, internet marketing, social media marketing, blogging, working online, selling online, branding, and much more.

Now, without further ado, here they are:

If you are familiar with the old adage that you don’t have to outrun the grizzly bear you just have to outrun the slowest runner then these are probably not for you. Just getting by online is not what these tools are about. Anyone can just get by! With these Internet Marketing Tools you can get ahead of your competition – way ahead!

The Top 5 Essential Internet Marketing Tools for Small Business Success

WordPress.

Having a great looking professional web presence that is simple and easy for a non-technical person to maintain is essential. Not only is WordPress free, but it’s extremely easy to use. Anyone can learn in a few minutes how to add articles and information to a WordPress based Website. Don’t get caught up in thinking that WordPress is just “blogging” software… it’s much more powerful than just a blog platform. WordPress is a full blown CMS (Content Management System) for the small business operator. There is no other single piece of software that can catapult your online business plan higher and faster than WordPress. With a properly designed WordPress Template, a few plug-ins (Software add-ons to increase the functionality of your site), and careful keyword selection you can out compete your competition.

No marketing platform has ever offered the kind of global access to potential customers that the World Wide Web does. But how do you get your message heard? Here are five guidelines to follow as you develop your online marketing campaign.

Interact. Web 2.0 – that’s what the pundits are calling the new, feature-rich World Wide Web – is all about participation. Prospects don’t just want to visit websites and read promotional copy. They want to get involved, to express themselves. The explosion of the social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter are a testimony to this. Give your customers an opportunity to interact with your company. Build a page for your product on Facebook, and let your loyal customers sign up as fans. Give visitors to your site a chance to review your products, or encourage them to review you on other sites. Listen to what your customers are saying. You may just learn that your product appeals to a niche you weren’t even aware of.

Post Informative Content on Your Website. Web surfers are looking for information, not ads. Posting brief, informative articles about your products and the market they serve can attract the attention of surfers and drive them to your site. Find out the keywords your prospects are searching and integrate these keywords into your articles. You can find a variety of keyword analysis options by typing “keyword research tool” into your favorite search engine. Don’t overdo it though: stuffing your content with keywords makes your copy difficult to read and might just get you banned by the search engines.

Build Your E-mail List With a Free Report. Again, a great segment of the web surfing population is looking for free information, and you should give it to them, even if information is what you have to sell. Offer visitors a brief but informative report on some aspect of your business in exchange for their name on your mailing list. They’ll be glad to have the free information they were looking for, and you’ll have another name for your list. But won’t you lose business if you teach everyone how to do it themselves? Not a chance. You won’t be giving them an exhaustive textbook that bestows the benefit of all your experience in the field. You’ll give them a brief overview, just enough to get started with if they seriously want to do it themselves. But most people won’t end up doing it themselves. From reading your report, they’ll often see just how much they don’t know about your specialty and decide to hire you or buy your product after all.

Start a Blog. This is another great way to provide good information for your customers and give them a chance to interact as well. A blog is a website designed to be added to on a regular basis. On it you can post interesting information about your field and your products and encourage your readers to comment on your posts. Readers to your company’s blog will see how passionate you are about your industry and will be glad of the chance to post their commentary in a public forum. Since you can provide a link to your company website on each new post, posting regularly will build the number of inbound links to your website, which is an important factor the search engines look to when determining page ranking.

Stay in Touch. Blogging, e-mail, social networking, all of these make it easy to stay in touch with your customers, and to make sure your brand is in their sights and minds when buying time comes. Post regularly to your blog and follow up on comments. Send out regular e-mails. Offer your customers even more information if you can and not just a list of products and what’s on sale. Today’s consumers are the internet generation and it’s a brave – or foolhardy – boss who decides that their business can do without a website, thank you very much. Even the most technophobic business owner of the smallest home-run jam-making company with a staff of one, knows that for their business to survive, they have to go online.
A website allows complete strangers to find out about a particular business, it showcases the goods, tells the consumers where the company is located, and usually allows them to buy products over the internet.
But having a website is not always enough. It is not enough if no one ever sees it.  When people are trying to find something online, they go to their favorite search engine – and a lot of people use the same one – type the product or service they’re looking for into the required field, then click on one of the first few hits they get. Searchers very rarely click to see page two’s offerings, let along page ten or page twelve or page fifty. This can be a problem for small businesses that are struggling to get the word out about their companies. Online visibility is crucial. It is not enough anymore just to have a website; today’s small businesses need a web presence too.
What is SEO?
SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization. It is a marketing technique that allows businesses to ensure the complicated algorithms used by the search engines don’t pass over their company. SEO is a form of marketing that aims to make the internet the business’s friend rather than its enemy.
How does SEO work?
SEO works by understanding how the search engines work – and then using that information to provide an advantage. For example, editing the website’s content and using relevant keywords, to help the search engines spot that a particular business may be useful, will increase its placement in the search results. Adjusting the computer language HTML and other codes may also help increase a site’s relevance. Website promotion could also help a business’s online visibility as inbound links are sometimes used to help search engines determine the viability of a site. These types of techniques are sometimes called “white hat SEO.” “Black hat SEO” is frowned upon by search engine guidelines and employs practices such as keyword stuffing or link farms to push a particular website up in the rankings. However, most search engines have found ways to discount websites that employ such methods.
Why is SEO important for small businesses?
It is hard enough for small businesses to compete with the big boys. SEO helps even the playing field so that potential customers or clients are as likely to see the website for a small or local business as they are one operated by the slick PR firms of a major corporation.
Having a strong web presence that makes it easy for customers to find small businesses they may never have heard of is vital for the success of the company. A business owner who wants their company to grow is likely to recognize that utilizing SEO practices will play an important role in taking their business to the next step.
How can poor SEO affect business marketing?
If SEO is poorly understood and implemented it won’t have a positive effect on any business. SEO has to be used correctly in order to be effective. Good SEO isn’t about directing traffic to a business – it’s about directing relevant, useful traffic to a business. That’s a big difference.
In addition, using poor SEO in the first place – which utilizes some of the shadier “black hat” methods – may work in the short term, but in the long term it is likely to damage a business’s reputation. If the search engines detect these practices, they may remove a website from their index.
Most small businesses know that trust is absolutely critical if they are to establish their reputation and encourage repeat customers or loyal clients. Employing tricks or smoke and mirror effects to draw traffic is likely to turn off real people who might otherwise have been happy to find the business in question.
Steps for implementing a successful SEO campaign for small businesses
Many big businesses employ SEO specialists to help them navigate the tricky path to the ultimate goal: high rankings by the major internet search engines. But for some small businesses, that simply is not practical, nor is it cost efficient – and so the owners must learn how to become their own SEO specialist. Small business owners wear many hats; president of the company, chief financial officer, customer service rep, and secretary. Now they need to learn how to be the SEO adviser too. But it can be done:
Step One
A small business owner should take the time to learn how search engines work and how SEO can help their company. While most business people would agree that the internet plays a huge part in their company’s visibility, not many of them know how search engines work and how they can optimize their own company’s online presence.
Step Two
The business’s website designer should work with your SEO consultant to put the methods into practice. Using file naming conventions, specific title tags, and meta descriptions will help shape the website and pages so that it will be easily recognised by the search engines.
Step Three
Search engines find websites by traveling through various links, so it is important to cross-link pages throughout the website in question, as well as external websites.
Step Four
People search for keywords, so it is necessary to have relevant keywords peppering the text of the website’s content. But the keywords – and their proximity and density – should be used naturally, in a way that can be read by real people as well the search machines.
Step Five
Business owners should now carefully monitor their websites so that they understand what aspects are working and what aspects are ineffective. Good SEO is a process not a one-off event.

When you are first deciding on online marketing in order to promote your business online, the main online marketing methods that you will encounter are Organicsearch engine optimisation and Pay per click advertising such as Google Adwords.

Organic search engine optimisation and Pay pr click advertising are the two main methods of online marketing. Both these forms of online marketing are aimed at getting highly targeted visitors to your website by making your website rank on search engine results for the keywords that you are targeting.

Ideally a business needs to utilise both in order to get the maximum exposure for their business online. However cost and budget considerations often result in a business having to make a choice between the two.

Organic search engine optimisation refers to the search results that appear in the main centre section of the search results. Ranking within organic search engine results cannot be bought and ranking is a result of organic non-biased steps taken over a period of time. It is dependent on the overall popularity of your website on the internet in general among other on site factors. Organic listings are the results that appear in the main section of a search engine such as Google when we search for something. Pay per click advertising on the other hand refers to the paid listing or sponsored results that appear on the right of the search results page and not in main middle section of the page.

Pay per click result is paid for and results are almost immediate to achieve. However there are many drawbacks. The recent years have seen an exponential rise in competition and a steep rise in pay per click costs. Click fraud is another rising concern where an advertiser may be charged for clicks that are not by genuine customers.

1) Many surveys and search engine marketing studies have pointed than users are more likely to click on organic search results that appear on the main section of the page rather than the paid listings that appear as ads on the right.

2) Organic listings are non-biased and cannot be bought. As such users trust the results more than the paid listings which are a result of paid advertising. The conversion rate for organic listings is much higher than for paid listings.

3) Rising cost of pay per click. Pay per click campaigns are becoming more and expensive day by day as competition is increasing. It is common now a days to be pay as much as £1 or £2 per click for a op 5 position in pay per click campaigns like Google ad words.

4) The results of organic search engine optimisation campaign are more permanent that pay per click. In pay per click the results stop almost immediately at the end of the campaign whereas in organic listings the rank remains.

Pay per click advertising also has its advantages and is a much quicker way to get results. This is useful to advertise events and other marketing campaigns that cannot be planned months in advance. Organic search engine optimisation is a time consuming task and listings often take months to achieve.

In the long run investing an organic search engine optimisationis beneficial and vital in website marketing. It has lower costs and offers a high return on investment. Once a favourable ranking has been achieved it is more permanent. In pay per click the results will stop immediately when the payment has stopped and the campaign comes to an end. Organic search engine optimisation (SEO) campaign also has a wider coverage and generates maximum exposure for your business.

Any organic campaign in order to achieve first page rank in Google will focus on a variety of techniques not only submission to search engines, e.g. directory submissions, press releases, article marketing and social media marketing. All this is important in order to generate quality back links to your website and will most certainly be covered in any organic search engine campaign that is run on behalf of your website.

Organic search engine optimisation is hence a better rounded approach to online marketing and has a much wider coverage. Although you may not see the result within the first few months it will be an extremely useful marketing investment for any business. The benefits of an organic search engine optimisation far outweigh any risks involved with investing in a one year organic search engine optimisation campaign.

For entrepreneurs who are just starting their businesses, it is quite difficult to maintain a business website. Being new to internet marketing can really be overwhelming. Everything will be easier if you know what exactly you are getting yourself into.

Below are top ten website marketing tips that can help you manage your small business more efficiently:

1) Work on your content. If you want a positive response from people who visit your website, make sure that the content of it are of good quality. When you provide quality information from your site, then more people would come and visitors will surely return. In turn, you will have more prospects to market your products and services to.

2) Update your web content. Aside from posting great content on your site, the freshness of your content is just as important. People are always looking for new information and if the articles on your site are old and outdated, you will lose the interest of your readers.

3) Stay away from “black hat” techniques. Some online marketers try “black hat” techniques to get on top of the search engines. Although these tactics have worked in the past, search engines today are more proficient in detecting and blocking out illegal SEO tricks.

4) Build strong links. An effective way to build strong links is to exchange links with websites that have quality and informative contents. Linking to sites with poor content can actually do more damage than good to your search engine ranking. One-way links are also a key point in link building.

5) Work on your on page optimization. Making sure that every element and every page of your website is search engine friendly will make a big difference in your search rank. Remember to use keywords on your page titles, categories, meta tags, and links. Use HTML coding in your posts to allow search engine robots to pick up your pages.

6) Make it user-friendly. A website that is truly user-friendly also caters to people with disabilities. Find ways so that people who are hearing impaired or with vision problems will still be able to access your site.

7) Use search-engine friendly URL. Each page of your website should use search-engine friendly URLs. Instead of using the default URL name, modify your settings so that the title of your content will also be the name used in the page’s URL.

8) Pay attention to your website’s layout. They say first impressions last. The same is true when it comes to viewing websites. You can choose a design according to your style but be sure that the convenience of your audience will not be compromised.

9) Use quality images and photos. Photos greatly enhance a website. Make sure that your images have great resolution and are suited to your site’s concept. However, avoid using files that are too large as this can affect the download speed of your site.

10) Pay attention to your download speed. Keep in mind that if your website isn’t quick in downloading, your viewer can instantly switch to a different site. Don’t use flash and complicated graphics to avoid slowing your down your download time.
