Why Websites Are Better Than Landing Pages

Recently there was an e-book claiming that websites are a less effective means of promoting a real estate business than are landing pages (also known as squeeze pages). As anyone who knows their SEO methodologies can tell you, it ain’t necessarily so.
There are a number of reasons why an actual website is a more effective tool to gather leads and generate business if real estate is your field. While a landing page can be properly optimized for the search engines, the long and short of it is that doing so means one thing – more work for the webmaster.
There are a number of reasons why real estate investors should choose to maintain a traditional web page rather than building a series of landing pages. For starters, real estate is a business where your image matters. Having a professional appearance is incredibly important; landing pages are something which are largely the province of fly-by-night internet marketers (though not always, we’re not trying to give landing pages a bad name altogether here). You can think of it in this way: if you were looking to purchase a property, whether as an investment or as a new home, who would you rather do business with? The realtor with a polished, professional looking site, or one whose web presence is more akin to the virtual take on a used car lot?
In many cases, this appearance corresponds with the behavior of the realtor; basically, landing pages tend to look cheap. Hardly the impression you want to give a prospective buyer or seller, is it? Of course it isn’t, so let’s move on. One of the chief problems with using landing pages is that a single business will tend to maintain a great deal of these pages which are targeted towards slightly different keywords, especially when using PPC advertising to promote your business.
The proponents of landing pages often characterize this as a ‘money funneling system’, something which is not entirely accurate. A better analogy might be a sky full of very dim stars viewed from a brightly lit city center. Those stars aren’t all that visible now, are they? The point here is that landing pages are rarely terribly visible in terms of search results. Since the content of these multiple landing pages is generally very similar, one page often differing from another only in the main keyword used, search engines view them as duplicate content.
What does this mean? It means that search engines largely ignore these pages – so they have little if any traffic or lead generation potential beyond the relatively small number of people who pay attention to contextual advertising. Is this inherently problematic? Actually yes – all of the work which goes into building these landing pages which don’t tend to generate that much traffic, relatively speaking could have gone into promoting your main website and gaining natural traffic. This traffic of course increases your website’s search engine ranking which means even more traffic and a higher profile.
If real estate is a numbers game, it stands to reason that you’d want to actually work the numbers and maximize your traffic to a single source. Landing page proponents will tell you that a traditional website can’t target all of the various keywords that a landing page can. This, of course is nonsense. It’s every bit as easy (if not easier) to add a page to your own website which is optimized for the same keywords – and it actually builds the page ranking of your website, rather than detracting from this important task. I’ll leave you with one other advantage that a traditional website has over landing pages when it comes to search engine optimization and generating leads. Landing pages don’t tend to be re-index by search engines if indeed they are ever indexed in the first place!
A website, by contrast has one possible application which makes it superior to landing pages in every way – it’s easy to deploy a blog as part of your website. Why a blog? Because it’s an incredibly easy way to add new content to your site and keep search engines coming back. This can help build your page ranking and your traffic faster and more sustainably than any number of landing pages ever will.
In the time it takes to put together a single web page, you could add a page to your main site, put work towards other traffic driving strategies or get your site re-indexed by adding a new post to your blog; and you’d still have time to get yourself a cup of coffee, sit back for a moment and congratulate yourself on your business acumen while the people who favor landing pages are still uploading their page. It’s an easy call to make – websites win out over landing pages hands down.

Looking at a good website is like glancing at a piece of art work however there is a lot more that a web designer has to do other than mere designing. Therefore the job of a website designer is a lot more complicated that usually assumed.
First of all designing a website is a difficult job. You have to consider the logo of the company, the various functionalities required for a website, the kind of colors that will look good and stuff like that put together to make a single design. Most of the times, these designs are made in software like Photoshop, Coreldraw or Dreamweaver. Then these designs have to be converted into a form that is viewable on the web which is usually the HTML format.
The designs that a designer creates have to be conceived in a very specific way because after the design is ready it has to be converted in a different form. Therefore the designer has to take care that the elements of the web design do not overlap and create a hindrance in the next step or else the job of the designer be a complete waste.
You have to be sure that in case there is any flash to be used or any kind of script to be installed on the page, there is adequate amount of space left between the website design to accommodate the same. If you do not plan it well then it is possible that you’ll have to do a lot of tit-bit work. This can be time consuming and very frustrating as well, therefore as a web designer you must ensure that all aspects are taken care of from the very beginning so that the entire designing process can happen the way you planned it.
The job that a web designer does goes well beyond the conventional responsibilities of a graphic designer. He/she has to take care of a lot of variable and dynamics before achieving the desired design and results. Moreover there should also be room for small changes to be made once the design is ready without consuming a lot of time. With so many complications and precision involved it is true that the job done is a difficult one. In case you are looking to have a good presence on the Internet, it is absolutely crucial that you have a good designer handle and create your website for you.

Search engine updates come and go but links remain strong. And it looks like link building is here to stay as the single most powerful SEO tactics. The question is where do you get relevant links that will drive your site up in the search results?
One of the most effective but often overlooked aspects of link building is competitive intelligence. The concept is simple. Find out where your rivals get their links, take over their link sources and blow the big guys out the water. Right now I’m gonna tell you a little secret of how to find links to a website and take advantage of the hidden link sources of your competish. And you’re going to learn how to bypass the search engine’s limit of 1,000 links per site and learn more about the linking profile of any website.
Step 1: The easiest way to find links to a website is to go to Yahoo! and run a search for “link:domain . com” (without quotes and spaces). The “link:” operator is used to get a list of links pointing to a site. Once you hit search you’ll be automatically taken to Yahoo! site explorer where you’ll get a list of links.
Step 2: In the ‘Show links dropdown’ choose ‘except from this domain’ to exclude all the internal links that are of no much use to you unless you’re interested in the navigational structure of your competitor.
Step 3: You can just go through the links in your browser or you can export them by pressing ‘Export first 1,000 results to TSV’ link in the upper right-hand corner and explore them later.
Step 4: Now that you’ve got a list of links you need to weed out the poor quality ones and select the best link sources that you can use for your own website.
I bet you have 2 questions: Why Yahoo! and not, say Google? And why only 1,000 links?
- Well Yahoo! is the best source when it comes to finding links. Google knows about as many links as Yahoo! but for some reason it only shows a random sample that’s often very outdated. Why 1,000 links?
- I’m not really sure but all search engine have that limit, maybe it’s their thing. Anyway here’s a trick that gets you past it:
Step 5: Alongside with the link:domainname operator, search for links to internal pages searching for “link:domainname. com/pagename” (without quotes and spaces)This way you’ll get a list of links pointing to a particular page that you can add to the main list you have.
Step 6: If you see that there’re a lot of links coming from one website add the following modifier to your query: “- site:sitename. com” (no quotes, no spaces) to exclude the links from this domain. The links from this site will be replaced by new links in your 1,000 links so you get more data.
Step 7: Remove the dulicates and you have your 1,000+ links list. Sounds like a lot of work? Yeah, I know. All right, I’m going to share the tool I use to have all these steps done for me. Tips for Adding Site Content
• Wrap text around images – use your edit image function on the CMS to do this. Make sure the size of an image doesn’t overwhelm the content on a page.
• Use plain easy to read text in black or dark grey on web pages, alternatively white text on black background pages. Web pages start to look messy when webmasters try to match logos and background colours with font colours.
• Avoid using bold oversized text on web pages, save this for page and heading titles only. Similarly don’t use bold text throughout the whole site.
• Make sure that you test all hyperlinks you add to a site actually work, including those to PDF documents as the search engines will penalize you for broken links with lower rankings.
• Use keywords in Page Titles and incorporate your major keywords and keyword phrases into web page text.
• Add keywords and keyword phrases to your footer rather than contact details, the search engines will pick these keywords up as part of your search engine rankings. Save your contact details for your ‘Contact Us’ page.
• Only add text to your site that is meaningful to your site visitors, accurately describes your products and services and is related to site content.
• If you have multiple businesses to promote with differing contexts then build a separate website for each. You will only confuse your website visitors and the search engines when trying to promote completely different businesses on one site. Believe me I have seen this done and it comes across as very messy.
• If you are having issues formatting objects on a page use a table to tile things down the page and remove the border. This can be used for images and text.
• Constantly compare any web changes you make in the CMS with the live site page and make adjustments if the formatting is out.
• Keep your web pages within the confines of the template design, do not add images and text that force users to scroll outside of their browser window to the right or left.
• Make it easy for your site visitors to contact you, a ‘contact form’ with no other details is just not enough and may put potential customers off from buying from you. As a minimum provide your email address and a telephone number.
• If you have a brochure only site, which most free website templates are you can add Paypal buttons to your web pages so that customers can purchase directly from your website through PayPal. This generally suits websites that only need to sell up to 15 items, anything above this and shopping cart software is recommended.
• Set ‘Site Restore’ points in your CMS so that if you lose the content of your web pages you can restore the site back to a certain time. Sometimes glitches happen when loading content and this will save you plenty of time if pages need to be redone.
• If you are going to upload a company logo make sure it is professionally designed for web use, as a poorly designed logo can negatively impact on the site presentation.
Site Navigation
Free Web Templates will typically already have the site navigation set running across the top of the home page, or running vertically down the left or right hand side of the page. I tend to advise clients to select a web design with left hand side navigation as it is more visually appealing for site visitors and is easier for visitors to use to navigate around a site.
Generally the free web template systems will have around 5 web pages with navigation set up that you can use as a guide, typically they will include a Home page, About Us page, Services Page, Contact Us page and Links page. These are all editable and you can add and delete pages as it suits you. You will also be able to change the sequence of pages showing in the navigation using the CMS.
Keep the titles of Navigation Tabs short and succinct, so that they clearly describe what the web page is about making sure titles are not so long as to put the web page design out of sync.
Going Live with your Site
Generally as soon as you change the name servers over to your new web host your site will go live. Alternatively some free web template systems will allow to you publish a page or save a page until you are ready to publish it live.
