It is surprising how many designers you can find who still underestimate the importance of search engine optimisation. SEO experts will tell that it’s increasingly important to appear in the top results on search engine results pages in today’s competitive market, and yet you can still find designers who are devoted to making sites which are pretty to look at but which offer little in the way of website optimisation.
As anyone with a rudimentary knowledge of SEO will tell you, the design stage is crucial for any site. With that in mind, this brief guide is for designers.
As a Designer, Why Exactly Do You Need to Know About Search Engine Optimisation?
Well, SEO isn’t just for people involved in marketing. As a designer it’s your responsibility to ensure that a site performs well, and that means it ranking highly when it comes to popularity. If a site’s not SEO friendly, it could be losing an awful lot of traffic that you won’t ever be aware of. Therefore a good designer is clearly one who understands SEO and creates sites that perform well.
Apart from Internet users typing in www.thiswebsiteaddress.com and so-called backlink referrals, search engines are the only way visitors are brought to a site. As a designer you may well be judged on whether the site you’ve created performs well in terms of website optimisation, however attractive or user friendly it might be.
Looking at the Basics. How Do Search Engines Actually Work?
Most search engines these days are crawler-based, which means that they have special programs that travel the information superhighway to gather information about what’s there. These programs are often called ‘spiders’ or ‘crawlers’. These gather the information on which search engines base their decisions about which sites to recommend when someone performs a search. It isn’t a simple process by any means. Complex algorithms come into play as websites compete for search engine ranking and attendant popularity.
Spiders operate in a very specific way and if you’re to design a site with SEO in mind, you need to know how they work. Spiders help the search engine determine the relevance and popularity of a site by studying content and links. They’ll base much of the information they send to search engines on what you’ve made it possible to put there.
What’s Your Job Now That We’ve Decided You’re a Search Engine Optimiser?
Each search engine has a unique algorithm for deciding how to rank web pages. As a designer, understanding the basic principles of these algorithms is vitally important for creating a site that performs well. Businesses often pay search engine optimisation experts for advice, and it’s something that will always be a point of concern with regard to a site. Even when high position is achieved it must be maintained, and designers can be called upon at any time to enhance the SEO of a site. The job of SEO experts can usefully be seen as involving two basic areas, onsite SEO and offpage optimisation. Onsite SEO are things that can be done on a website itself to enhance SEO, such as HTML mark-ups, internal linking, keywords, structure etc. As such most designers will be heavily involved in onsite SEO. Off page optimisation is involved with things you will have much less control over as a designer, such as back links and ways of getting traffic to a site. Having said this, it could be argued that the design of a site is key to users visiting it in a very broad sense.
What Are Some Mistakes Designers Make in Terms of SEO?
The most common mistake designers make is to get carried away with making a site that shows off their skills by being attractive to look at. It’s sad in many ways, but a lot of the tools designers can employ to make a site look good will detract from its effectiveness in terms of SEO. Splash, Flash, Java and frames are all examples of things you might want to avoid, because search engines need to be able to read text as a basic principle. On the other hand it’s possible to go overboard as a designer when it comes to SEO. Search engines frown upon sites that are obviously designed with SEO in mind and feature, for example, the overuse of keywords and links.
As a designer you’ll really want to do your homework where SEO is concerned!

Think of internet marketing while designing your website
Marketing your website throughout the internet is best possible way of advertising your services. It is very important that you do it in a way so that there would be no ambiguity in minds of customers. When you go to electronic market, you expect to see electronic goods, books in books store, hence in a same way customer should be able to see what he or she can get in your website.
Usually, website designer are more concentrated toward the colors, pictures and in showing their artistic brilliance, that they forget what the main purpose of building a site is. The main purpose is what you want yourcustomers to know after visiting your website, WHAT ARE YOU SELLING? And sometimes web designers make the mistake of hiding the data concerning what is being sold.
Customers should be able to get an overview of your services through your homepage.
Don’t expect that they would have time to intrigue your whole website page by page.
It’s just like an advertisement; visitor views it for 2 seconds, then move onto next website. Hence to catch viewer’s attention there has to be presence of meaningful words so explicitly that viewer doesn’t have to think hard to interpret.
It’s all responsibility of website designer to provide you professional looking webpage yet very approachable at the same time. It should be clear to your client that he or she has entered the right website with right information. For example you enter a book store to buy your favorite book, but instead you were stopped in the middle and told that the book you want is in inner room. At the same time another efficient book store would bring the book at your steps rather than expect you to go inside.
Moral of the story: – don’t expect customers to find what they want, but instead extend a helping hand by telling them what you can do for them. And best way to do is thinking of internet marketing while designing yourwebsite.

Not just a single word

For example if someone is looking for information on the best type of dog for a family, they might type in âdogâ. However this would give many results not specifically aimed at the specific information they are looking for.

How can you find out what searches are actually done and how many?

You can analyse either your chosen keywords or your whole website, and see some alternative suggestions that people actual use.
Density
The keywords you use need to be relevant to your site and be reflected in the text on your site.  The measure of your keyword density is as a percentage of the total number of words on the page. There are many free tools on the web that allow you to measure the keyword density of your web pages.
You need a reasonable keyword density whilst allowing the page to be readable to people looking at your page. However it is important to note that some search engines, notably Google will penalise your page if the keyword density is too high.
You should aim for a density in the range of 2-8% whilst still providing good readable content.
Placement
There is disagreement over whether the higher a keyword is placed in the general text on a page makes any difference, so it is better to concentrate on producing readable content than making sure all the keywords are in the first paragraph.
However the placement of your keywords in specific areas of the page does make a difference. Keywords that appear in the page title, and meta description, headers and alt text do get prominence.
Testing and recording
Why not keep a record of your chosen keywords, the density on the page, their popularity, the competition and your ranking, and the number of people who find your website using them. A spreadsheet would be ideal for this purpose.
Then when you re-test the keywords at a later date, you can see if there are any changes.
Also donât assume that once you have chosen your keywords and written the content that the job is finished. Be prepared to change keywords and your content where they are not working.

Twitters audience grew by more than 400% in 2009 and more than one quarter of online users read “tweets” in the last 12 months. 14% of Twitter users followed companies or organisations via Twitter.
Nearly 2 in 5 Australians are now interacting with companies via social networking sites, which reinforces the point that we are very open to engaging with brands and companies online. Nielsen themselves make the statement, “The opportunities for brands and companies to tap in to the social media phenomenon are really just beginning to emerge and to date we’ve only seen the tip of the iceberg”.
The facts are this, nearly 9 out of 10 Australian internet users (86%) are looking to fellow internet users for opinions and information about products, services and brands, and Australians engagement with online word of mouth communication is going to increase in coming years as social media plays an increasingly important role in consumer decision making.
In some cases, businesses have banned Facebook altogether in the office environment, and I know of one big media company, that actively monitors their staffs internet browsing and terminates their internet access if they use the site during working hours.
Given that the average Facebook user spends 8:19 hours per month on the site, and that’s the average, I know some people who spend considerably more per month than that on Facebook, small business needs to find a better way to harness this giant, banning it from their business is not the way to control it.
Now to get to my question above, why would you as a business pull back on your social media strategy at the very time that it’s gaining so much popularity?
The answers are simple:
1. Lack of Resources
2. Fear of negative comments and inappropriate content appearing on company sites
3. No clear rules,policies or procedures being set up within the strategy framework
4. Lack of knowledge of social media within the business
5. No strategy in place, just add hock usage of sites because everyone else is using it
6. Lack of a risk management assessment
7. No reputation management strategy in place
8. Fear of the Unknown
9. Older Business owners with a traditional view of marketing
10. Marketing managers with little or no experience in social media marketing
11. Fear of competitors gaining business secrets
These are a few objections that I’ve personally encountered and in every case, none of these businesses has a marketing strategy in place that covers online.
Don’t stop your social marketing efforts, but do put in place a strategy that covers the essential areas that you need to have locked in place before you begin your social media activities, these are:
1. Risk Assessment – Make sure those in your business understand the risks involved and put in place polices and procedures before you start
2. Define very clearly your reasons for using the sites, what strategy will you employ and how will you manage the engagement from online users. Each site you use needs a very clearly defined set of rules and game plan. Set these for each site you use and monitor the performance of your plan, build engagement and community around your business.
3. Clearly identify the rules, what can be published and what type of information do you want out in the public arena, what is acceptable and what isn’t. Get your staff to sign a disclaimer and make it clear to them what the rules of engagement are. Very important to do this before you start.
3. Resources - Select a social champion within your business and use them to build your profiles and encourage them to help build your community online. Don’t ban it, play it smart.
4. Online reputation management – Now essential for every business working on the web. Set up your management, monitoring and repair rules no matter how big or small your business is. Make sure you know what online consumers are saying about your business and you know how to manage and control those comments if found.
Having a strong online presence will be, no is essential, for your business if you want to compete. No point banning it, you’ll just end up doing your business damage and giving your competitors an advantage, and I really can’t see the sense in that, can you?.

Should Twitter And Facebook Be Part Of Your Hiring Decision? What Do Job Seekers Think!
Should you be checking the references of your potential hires using Twitter and Facebook, or the myriad of other social media outlets?
This is an extremely controversial topic; especially for those looking for work or contemplating a job change.
A short time ago, I shared what I thought would be a helpful article with my Facebook friends and family, alerting them to the fact that more employers are using social media sources such as Facebook as part of their decision making process when hiring. The article highlighted the importance of not putting anything on a social media site that you would not want your current or potential employer to see.
Here’s what I wrote:
“Be careful how you use Facebook and Twitter. Hiring managers are checking social networking sites more often as part of their reference checking process. Any inappropriate or questionable content can rule you out as a candidate if you are looking for a job”.
Some of the comments that I received were fascinating:
…”you just can’t get a break, can you?”
…”isn’t there some sort of privacy infringement here?”
“Facebook and Twitter are social outlets and employers shouldn’t be trespassing on one’s personal life”
“…where do we draw the line?”
“If a company cannot solely use my cover letter, resume and how I respond during an interview as an apparatus to make a decision, than I really should think twice about wanting to working for that company.”
As you can see, some potential candidates view the use of Twitter and Facebook as “infringement” and “trespassing” on what is seen as a personal and private resource where they should be free to be who they are with friends and family. There is the strong belief that what is discussed on Facebook is no measure of the person that they are on the job, and therefore it should not be used to measure behavior when working.
Do we not take on a different persona depending on the audience or environment? Is the professional and focused person that we are when we are at work the same person that we are when we are interacting with our family and friends in an informal environment?
Some argue that is natural to have different personas depending on our environment and whom we are engaged with. Some may also argue that we should not be judged because we are letting our hair down through a medium that was set up for us to do just that. Essentially, a medium that in a very public way, allows us to share our everyday pleasures and disappointments with those we chose to share these feelings with.
Yet isn’t the information on the Internet public domain? If a person chooses to post on a public domain site, do employers not have the right to access the site in order to “see another side” of a potential employee?
I don’t profess to have the right answers on this subject but I do have some very specific advice. Employers should not use social media as the only source of reference information on potential employees. It’s important to get a rounded view of potential candidate’s by checking both current employer references and past references.
It’s also important for employers to weigh the content that they are seeing on the site and not make rash judgments with the exception of content that is clearly inappropriate.
For those looking for work, the new reality is that employers are using social media as part of their job reference process in order to get a “360″ degree view of a potential hire.
The types of posts that can potentially rule you out as a candidate are posts with inappropriate language or pictures. Or posts that are derogatory or demeaning in any way. Employers are also looking for how you communicate online so be careful of grammar and spelling errors. Never use the Internet to post disparaging remarks about your current or former employers.
Delete anything that may be questionable before looking for a new job. Don’t lose sight of the fact that you are conversing on the Internet and not at the kitchen table. Remember that others have access to your information.
Make sure that you utilize all of the privacy options allowed with social media sites if you have concerns about who will be viewing your profile.
Use of social media sites are growing by leaps and bounds daily. Parts of our lives that were once very private really are available for all to review if you chose to participate in social media sites on the Internet. Both employers and potential employees need to be mindful of the power of this new medium and not abuse it. Proceed with caution.

This is hardly ground breaking news but having a powerful link profile will help you to rank well in the search engines. Having an especially powerful link profile will also drive traffic directly to your website.
As the webmaster of a new site, there are several things you must do. First, you need to create a genuinely useful website filled with equally useful and informative content. You need to ready yourself to add fresh content on a frequent basis, in order to retain existing site visitors and to attract the search engine spiders. You also need to start building links – a good link profile takes time to develop so it is essential that you start as soon as possible. Below are some of the more and less effective methods of building quality inbound links to your new website.
Create Quality Content
OK, we’ve already mentioned this in passing, but it’s important. Linkable content will get linked to (eventually). You may not have the traffic base to command links organically in this way yet, but you will do soon. Unique, informative, and even controversial content will ultimately see other sites willing to link to your own.
Video marketing has become especially popular because of its viral nature. You can create a good video clip, embed it into a page of your site and include “email to a friend” links. Also ensure that it is well branded so that everybody knows where the video first came from.
Free Directory Submissions
You should submit your site to a lot of web directories over time. If your domain is brand new then you should attempt to limit the amount of submissions you make in the first month. Google is believed to penalize sites that build too many links too quickly in this way. However, free directories can take days, weeks, or even months before they get round to accepting your submission so do start early.
As well as general category directories for your search engine link profile, you should research industry specific directories. These will also help your search engine ranking, but they can drive excellent levels of targeted traffíc to your site. Consider paying some of the bigger and more influential directories for an annual submission.
Paid Directory Submissions
Free directories typically only allow you to link to the main page of your website, but most also allow you to choose the title of your link. This gives you the opportunity to build your links according to your keywords, which is an essential component of link building for search engine rankings. Paid directories, on the other hand, also usually allow deep linking to individual pages of your website.
Join Forums And Post Relevant Comments
Forums are, in reality, becoming less popular. The advent of the oft discussed web 2.0 means that the forum is seen as something of a dying trend. However, a lot of people do still use them and they do offer the opportunity to garner your website with some traffic and provide you with signature links.
Join forums that are relevant to your industry, create a signature link using your more important keywords and then browse. Find topics that genuinely interest you, or areas where you can offer assistance. Post comments, without linking to your site, and rely on your signature link to do the rest. If you provide genuine, helpful information then you may find that you pick up some very interested leads along the way.
Request Links
You don’t get anything if you don’t ask. Find relevant websites, though not in direct competition to your own site, and request a link. Point out a particularly useful section of your website content that is easily linkable and offer the HTML code to provide a link.
This isn’t, in all honesty, the best way to spend your linking time. It can take many attempts with various websites before you get an acceptance and a link to your site. Webmasters will usually link to sites they have genuinely found themselves, or else sell their advertising spaces. Alternatively, they may only link to other sites within their own network.
Tagging And Social Bookmarking
So, you’ve read all about social bookmarking and tagging, but don’t know how it can help your site? Well, the principle is fairly simple – join the social bookmarking sites, create a list of useful sites including one or two of your own, and then publish them. Some search engines are known to be particularly fond of using links found in this way. Also, if your list is genuinely useful then you should find some traffic diverts to your own site as a result.
Blog Commenting
Find blogs that are relevant to your industry and your site and sign up. Most blogs provide the opportunity to link to your site via your name so pick a name that includes relevant keywords. Like forums, only post relevant content and comments. Answers like “me too” do not count. If you don’t have something valuable to add, then don’t add anything, and move on to the next link building venture, please!
Article Syndication
Write articles, or have them written for you, and submit them to syndication websites. GoArticles and EzineArticles are among the more popular syndication sites and the article pages typically rank well. You have the opportunity to include two biographical links with most article directories, and these should point to the relevant pages on your site and include keywords as the anchor text.
Article syndication is a very good method of building links, but only if you can create article content that is appealing to visitors and to webmasters. However, one good article could generate many links and hundreds or even thousands of visitors to your website.
Offer Content To Other Sites
This is similar, although more specific, than article syndication. Contact webmasters of websites that operate in the same industry as you. Offer unique content in exchange for a link or links to your website. Again, if you can write well, then you shouldn’t find it too difficult to find an avenue for publication of your work.
A lot of sites actively look for submissions in this way, so keep an eye out when you are next browsing the web.
Press Release Submissions
Press releases have been around a long time, and are still going fairly strong online. Again, press releases offer the opportunity to drive interested traffic to your website and some PR wires allow authors to include links to their website. PRLeap and PRWeb are among two of the more popular and beneficial sites to submit your PR to.
Reciprocal Links
I find myself sitting on the fence when it comes to reciprocal links. Once upon a time, a reciprocal link campaign was the most popular way of building links. You exchange links with another website and you both benefit. They do still have their place, if you can negotiate a well placed link on a relevant website with a lot of traffic. However, in terms of SEO, reciprocal links are known to have been devalued by the search engines. Consider every reciprocal link opportunity based on its own merit and, in most cases, ignoring the search engine optimization possibilities.
Don’t Spam Blogs And Forums
Above, we have detailed a couple of link building methods that include posting on forums and blogs. Please, don’t spam. Spam is the scourge of the online world and something that every site owner could do without. Spamming will make you unpopular, may get your site delisted, and it sure won’t make you any friends.
Don’t Use FFA Link Farms
A FFA (Free For All) website enables any website owner to place their link on a web page. Don’t do it. Search engines despise this practice and you will not gain any benefit in any way from the use of this kind of site.
Avoid Any Dubious Link Building Practice
If you see a link building opportunity that looks dodgy, ignore it. At best you will waste your time, but at worst your site could be penalized and you may never be able to recover. If it looks too good to be true… you know the rest.
