Simple Tricks to Make Your Site More Social Media Ready

Once thought to be a passing fad, and although still relatively new, social media is now taking a firm hold and warrants attention in many retailers’ online marketing efforts.
You can’t avoid it. No matter where you turn it seems you hear terms like “fan page”, “followers”, “tweet”, “re-tweet”, “blog” and more being used. With all the social media hype, many are questioning what social media actually is and how they can use it to move their business forward.
In this article I am going to explain what social media is, provide some strategies for making your site more social media friendly, touch upon differences between options presented by major social media outlets, and answer the question of whether you should do it yourself, or hire a consultant to do it for you.
Social Media can be time consuming, but when implemented correctly can add a level to your business that helps build brand loyalty, and awareness which in turn can boost your bottom line.
What is Social Media?
Wikipedia defines social media as: media designed to be disseminated through social interaction, created using highly accessible and scalable publishing techniques. Social media uses Internet and web-based technologies to transform broadcast media monologues (one to many) into social media dialogues (many to many). It supports the democratization of knowledge and information, transforming people from content consumers into content producers.
In other words, it is a group of Internet-based applications that utilize new web concepts to promote user generated content.
Examples of some of the major social applications currently online are Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube.
Twitter can be seen as a “micro blog” type service that enables you to post short messages of up to 140 characters that are fed in real time to your followers. Facebook is more of a “publishing” platform which enables you to create a page that integrates multiple media options into one (i.e. discussion boards, blogs, photos, shopping carts, etc…) YouTube is a service that enables you to produce video content to the masses (possibly to demonstrate the use of your product.)
The power and uniqueness of each provides pros and cons. Because Facebook has a little more of a learning curve to it and because it has a number of options to choose from, I’ll briefly touch upon that below.
Simple Tricks to Make Your Site More Social Media Friendly
Whether or not you’re on social media platforms or not, odds are you’re customers are. They’re sharing your URL with their friends on social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn or MySpace.
If you want to engage in social media marketing, you’ll want to be sure to have that presence reflected on your e-commerce site.
Social Sharing
There are dozens of sites you can visit that will provide embeddable code which can be used to create social networking icons on your site. These icons make it easy for visitors to share what they like about your site with their social media friends and followers.
A couple of sites worth checking out are ShareThis. ShareThis is a tool you can install on your site that makes it easier for visitors to share with their network. You’ve probably seen some form of ShareThis on news sites. There are typically several icons spread out in a horizontal line or grouped together under a header of “Share.” Installing this tool lets your visitors easily spread the word via social networking sites about a page or website – yours – they like.
Add This is very similar to ShareThis. Both require site registration and a little publisher information, but both are also easy to use and do basically the same thing.
Show off your Social Media presence
If you’re on several social networking sites, it behooves you to display that affiliation somewhere on your site. For the consummate online shopper, these links show you’re not just an e-commerce beginner. The more social media sites you’re a part of, the more web-knowledgeable you look and the greater brand awareness you can build.
You can display your social media links either in self-created sidebar module or by using sites like Lijit ( http://www.lijit.com ). Lijit is similar to ShareThis; however, rather than pushing people out social networking sites, Lijit pulls them into your other sites.
Facebook Fan Page or Group?
A question that often gets asked when it comes to Facebook and brands is should you build a Facebook Group Page or a Fan Page?
It is a good question and the answer depends mostly on what your plans are for your site. I’ve broken down the pros and cons of both a fan page versus a group page below.
Facebook Fan Page
Facebook Fan Pages are a great option for brands – including e-commerce sites – that plan on posting information at least once a week.
Facebook Fan Page Pro’s:
* Looks polished; closely resembles an individual profile page
* Can include videos, photos, links, events, etc.
* Can be fed into “fans’” update stream similar to an individual profile update
* Can be given a customized url similar to an individual profile
* Hides the name and address of the page creator
* Offers options to add applications such as a Twitter feed
* Includes a “wall” similar to individual profiles that people can post comments on
* Can be paired with a Facebook Fan Page Widget on your site
Facebook Fan Page Con’s:
* More difficult to manage conversations between fans
* Conversations are on display for the public to see
* Unable to convert Facebook Groups to Fan Pages if you’ve already got a Group page set up
* Until you have an adequate number of fans, you’ll be posting a lot
* A dismal Fan Page linked to your site can hurt your inbound links in SEO
Facebook Group Page
Facebook Group pages are easy to create and slightly more personal than a Fan Page. Because it is not a constantly fed profile-like page, posts do not need to be as often.
Facebook Group Pro’s
* Can be more intimate; people see who created the group
* Still allows for pictures, photos, videos, events, etc. to be posted
* Allows for emails to be sent to all group members
* Pre-dates Fan Pages; more familiarity among early adopters of Facebook
Facebook Group Con’s
* Visitors must visit your group page for updates
* Does not allow applications to be added to the group page
* Offers visibility
* Will automatically post related groups to your group page whether you want them or not
* Cannot be linked to your site via widget(s)
The Verdict? Consider a Facebook Fan Page if you want to keep your “fans” up to date on the goings on of your site. Consider a Group if you have a niche within your site that people might want to create conversations about.
Should You Hire a Social Media Consultant for Your Site?
With the hundreds of social sites and applications available, it’s easy to get overwhelmed. When you’re already trying to keep your e-commerce business afloat, social media can seem unnecessary and time-consuming.
Research has shown, however, that e-commerce retailers are reaping the benefits of this new media channel (i.e., offering better customer service and increased sales) so it pays to use it.
Not everyone is social media savvy nor do they have the time which is why a lot of companies hire consultants to help them with their campaigns.
Do you need a consultant or should you do your own work?
When to hire a social media consultant:
* If you really do not have the time to commit to a social marketing campaign.
* If you don’t have the time to learn the ins and outs of social applications.
* If you don’t consider yourself a strong writer and/or interactive with your audience.
* If you want to launch a large social media campaign and need experts to help get things off the ground.
* If you tend to defer project work to experts rather than attempt to try it yourself.
When to do your own social media work:
* If you’re familiar with social media sites (like YouTube, Twitter, LinkedIn or Facebook) and use them on a personal basis.
* If you’re a quick-learner and tech-savvy.
* If you’re planning a small campaign with only one or two social sites.
* If you have content ready to post on a blog (or Twitter, Facebook, etc.)
Note: Social media consultants tend to pay per project or per hour depending on their rates and availability.
What We’ve Learned
Social media seems to be here to stay. It most certainly will evolve and change as time goes, but you can be sure that in one form or another social media will continue. It’s much like the TV or radio were when they began and the power it harnesses for those who use it will shine through.
It can bring awareness to your product or brand and help you build a stronger relationship with your customers which can lead to greater sales and future growth for your business.
Having said that, keep in mind that social media can be time consuming and integrating a social media marketing campaign into your business should not be taken lightly. Proper planning and implementation is critical to your success-you may even want to consider hiring an expert to handle it for you. This will largely depend on your needs, budget, and time you have to allocate your own resources to getting the job done in-house.
When it comes to Facebook and the choice between creating a Fan Page or a Group, you’ll want to consider your objective before you determine which is best for you. Fan Pages are best for pushing brands and for ecommerce sites that can commit to posting at least once per week. Consider a Facebook Group if you want a more personal touch and if you can’t commit to posting at least once per week.
Integrating social media into your site is easy. There are sites that provide the code and icons for you to simply paste into your web structure. Once you are utilizing social media make sure you display it on your site so customers know where to find you.
Remember, social media is a tool that can push your business and brand forward. Plan carefully and choose wisely. Like those that harnessed the power of TV and radio, social media adopters will see the benefits with time.

Now that you have a World Wide Web, you as an affiliate website marketer you can be anywhere with thousands of surfers. Long are the ages gone when only affiliate marketing was an offline thing.
What is affiliate marketing? This is when an affiliate website owner earns commissions by sending potential surfers to its merchant’s websites. This commission is only earned after the potential surfer buys products or services. The more the number of surfers an affiliate site sends to its merchants, the more the commission it receives.
Does this sound too simple and you want to be an affiliate marketer right now? Hey, hold on first…! Review this statement before you jump to it, “Being a successful affiliate website owner is not easy as majority of people tend to think.”
In a realistic world, nothing is achieved easily. Any successful affiliate marketer will tell you that it involves work which is blended with passion, right attitude, patience, planning and focus to be a successful affiliate marketer. They will tell you the many lonely hours they sit in front of their computer screens searching for the best affiliate programs.
Successful ones know that everything starts from the time of choosing a site concept. They build their affiliate website concepts from where targeted surfers start from. They start from the search engine because that is where the targeted surfers start from.
These successful affiliates are after providing information first before selling. Why information first and not selling merchants products and services? Well…you see, they first sat down and thought hard. Then they asked themselves this vital question: “What makes surfers to surf on the internet?”
Information was their correct answer. From that day onwards, they principled themselves by prioritizing information in their affiliate sites. This builds credibility and trust between them and their surfers.
Again, they know that for this information to be found easily by surfers on the search engines, they have to use keywords. They search for keywords that are used by surfers while searching on the search engines. The end result of this is a continuous flow of targeted traffic to their affiliate website.
The successful ones own a complete set of tools. Effective tools that yield the results they want. They did not choose cheap poor quality tools to use in their affiliate website.
They further went an extra mile of diversifying their online businesses. They know that their affiliate sites will not survive on one source of income.
The unsuccessful ones get things wrong from the start. They begin building their affiliate website concepts from where targeted surfers don’t start from. In the long run, their online business is not found by surfers on the search engines. This leads to nil traffic which eventually causes their affiliate programs to fail completely.
Make no mistake about this! The secret of being a successful modern affiliate marketer is easy. It is only by building your affiliate website from where targeted surfers start from.

Fallacies in the world consist of owning a website: a natual quick way to make hordes of money. We hear about various people on the news who do this. But guess what? They are the exceptions. If that were true, then all business owners in the world would be another Howard Hughes, Warren Buffett or even Donald Trump.
Instead, reality on the internet is the same as the real business world and maybe the percentages are even worse now. With our country’s current financial problems affecting all of us, we might expect approximately only about 3% or less to become successful and actually earn or make money.
Good News. You can earn money and have a successful website fairly quickly with the right help, information and aid. You only need an enduring intense earnest desire to do so.
Building your website is similar to building a home. First you need your foundation or basement. You need this so other websites, search engines and visitors can find you. This encompasses your basic decisions you make for your site.
Since you have chosen to have a directory, you need a place to put your website. This means you need a server to host your site. Server pricing is variable and competitive. Research hosting companies and then choose one that is easy to pay for, has all the requirements you need for your website, provides good customer service and has a good track record of their servers not being shut down. Older servers are down more than newer ones just like your computer.
Next you should decide on a name. Always purchase a URL or name for at least 5 years as google gives more credence to websites which plan to stick around versus the here-today, gone tomorrow website.
If you have already purchased a name, you can still implement the following system. It is always a bit better if you can use the following as your main website URL but you can still do this if you have already done something different. At the very beginning, always target your plans and goals around obtaining visitors and traffic to your site. This is one area where you can leverage this so try to take advantage of it.
You need the right keyword or keyword phrase. Note: a common description of a keyword phrase is ‘long tailed keyword’. If you wonder what the importance of this is, just go to the google search and enter in a phrase or word for your planned site. (Not the name you have chosen.) The websites that come up are sites which are optimized and marketed for that specific keyword.
So how do you find your keyword or phrase? There are two methods. Wordtracker is a site which has a free trial and can be used but however, google now has it’s own generator for keywords and letting you see the traffic for each. Just go to: https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal Enter in the most basic keyword for your planned website into the search and google will also give you suggestions for more keywords as well as the current traffic and projected future traffic for each.
Before choosing keywords for your site, you need to decide what type of directory you want to own. If you take a look at directories on the internet, you will find the more ‘general’ in nature, the more competition there is by webmasters to be top on google and that should also be a concern as you should want an easy website to own and become top in your category. As a directory owner, you will, in time, want to write articles for your directory, possibly post new developments in the industry, post news that have developed and become known as an expert in your field.
A good way to do this, is first of all take a self inventory. Do you have any knowledge already about a specific topic? It could be horse racing, shoes, ‘As seen on TV Products’, Trivia games and questions, hand crafted jewelry, automobile repair or just anything that has always interested you and you already automatically read or absorb information about the topic. It is much easier to work with a targeted topic that interests you. Let us use a specific example here that most people can relate to. For the sake of giving you help, let us choose ‘Consumer Electronics’. This topic is general enough that it covers a large enough area to allow you to be creative since many household goods, i.e., refrigerators, microwaves, etc. fall under this as well as televisions, DVD players, radios, etc.
Using our main targeted keyword of Consumer Electronics, we then start our keyword research to either define our website name or just pick our first keyword we want to use for our site. When viewing todays list of keyword suggestions from google for this category, we find the following:

In looking at the above list, you will find that ‘home consumer electronics’ appears to be a sleeper in that the current June search is 9,900 but the expected global is 550,000 per month. You might find that the .com is not available but in this case, even owing the .net should be beneficial. The other keywords are also fairly good too. You will find many keywords are not available due to desiring a .com. When you research, you may end up re-defining your exact plans for your <b><a rel=”nofollow” onclick=”javascript:_gaq.push(['_trackPageview', '/outgoing/article_exit_link']);” href=”http://www.worlddirectorywhitepages.com”>directory</a></b> so that you can meet the ability to grab traffic right away and making things easier for yourself. Keep in mind, you can choose this as a website name or simply use it within your keyword optimization for your site. It is always best to own your keywords if possible as, in the long run, there are more benefits to this beyond what is expressed herein. To obtain other good keywords, take your chosen keyword that you have purchased and enter that into google’s keyword tool search and google will give you more suggested keywords with the traffic for each one. It is generally a good practice, if that is all that is available, to accept a .net for your website URL but only .coms for extra keywords you own related to your site.
You want to purchase the keyword just like you purchase any name. It will not matter too much whether it is a .com or a .net although .com is always best. Your keyword or keyword phrase should have a natural traffic ranking of 1500 per month or better. Try to make it the exact keyword you want. You can always work from Google’s suggested list. I was shocked to find a perfect keyword the other day using this system that had over 40,000 a month in traffic and it only cost me .00 to purchase it. So, work at this.
Once you purchase the keyword or keyword phrase, it is time to create your title, description and keywords for your site.
It is good to know what other top sites are using for theirs. Do not copy them. Enter the keyword in google search and go to the top sites. Right click on the top left hand of their site and then click on the “View Source”. You want to view the meta tags on this page. They are located between the two following tags: <head>. . . . </head>. You can print the necessary information and use them as work sheets for brainstorming for your own site as that can help. I recomment copying the necessary information you need to your wordpad on your computer so you do not end up printing the whole website.
If you find that you have located more than one good keyword, you can use more than one in this system. Your only big limitation will be trying to make them fit in your title. You might be able to squeeze in 3 if they are short words and/or phrases.
When creating this information for your own site, all words used here are counted as search words for your site by search engine spiders so try to eliminate the words “the, it, and, etc.” as much as possible. Your main keyword or phrase that you purchased should always be the first word in each of your title, description and keywords. Since this is the basic foundation of your site, take extra time to do this.
There are character number recommendations for some search engine spiders. The title should be no more than 60 characters, including spaces, description should be no more than 150 characters and no less than 120 characters and keywords should be a maximum of 874 characters. It is easy to get carried away with having too many keywords so try to refine this list to words that definitely directly relate to your site.
A search engine has a spider which visits your site periodically to rank your site in comparison with all sites on the internet and other sites that compete with you. They mainly find your website through links on other sites.
One of the main reasons you want visitors to your site as soon as possible is to try to obtain a rating of ranking from Google even if it is 0. Sites not rated by Google also give the appearance to other website owners of a possible Google banned site even though you know it is only because you have a new website. There are many ways to receive your rating quickly. If left alone and nothing done to change this, it could take as long as 6 months to 1 year for Google to give you that status. Note: to not even have a ranking by a search engine is nicknamed being in ‘the sandbox’.
This seems like tedious un-necessary work but, in the long run, you will be glad you have done these things when you experience visitors right away to your website.

Do you want to get first page on Google? If you have a web page or blog, you likely already are first page for some searches. With a bit of SEO, you can gain first page on more searches. And its simple.
The first and most obvious step is think about what words or phrases you want to be first page on.
Once you have that list, determine how many people are searching for those terms. To check how popular a search is you will need a tool. I use Wordtracker (there is a free online version). The higher the number, the more popular the search. No point in trying to optimize for a word or phrase that is rarely searched. For example, I sell a time management book called “Time Leadership – using the secrets of leadership for time management”. So naturally I wanted to rank first page on “time leadership”. The problem is no one is searching for that. They do, however, search for time management.
There is also no point in trying to optimize for a word that is too popular because getting a high ranking there will be almost impossible.
Think about “long tail”
Think about how people will search. EG “Where do I find a good time management speaker” or “motivations speakers in Canada”. The longer the string, the less competition you will have for it so the easier you will get ranked.
So make the list of phrases you want to “own” and ones that are realistic to “own”.
Now it is simple. Just put these words and phrases in your titles, picture descriptions, videos and in your text. The titles are the most important. That is why my blog is called “CEO Blog – Time Leadership”. This gives me good google juice on all 4 words. So searching “Time management CEO” will get me first page. Or “time management blog” or “CEO leadership tips” etc.
Yes you want to repeat your words and phrases often in the text. This said – write naturally. Never let SEO be a substitute for good content.
So you do this and you still are not first page. That is because you do not have enough credibility with google. You need another free tool to check this. I use a free firefox plugin called searchstatus. It gives me both the pagerank and the Alexa rating of any web page. Higher pagerank numbers are better. High credibility is your ultimate goal as that is what gets you ranked first and Alexa tells you traffic (a lower number is better)
How do you increase your pagerank?
It is all about quality inbound links. You want people with a high credibility (pagerank 4+) to link to you – eg Wall St Journal would be great. More is better and link rank is almost logarithmic so a pagerank of 6 is worth 10 times one of 5 etc.
This said, for you to get a link from an 8 rated site like pornstars.com would not increase your rank in the business genre. Sites are ranked for relevance.
The best inbound links are contextual. So someone blogging and saying I heard time management guru Jim Estill speak and hot linking from “Time management guru” is great for me. Second best, hot link from “Jim Estill”. Third is just having a link on a blogroll without any context.
You get a higher rank if you update your content regularly. That is why having a blog on your site is a good way to increase your ranking.
Moderate cross linking within your own material will also increase your rank and clarify for google what it is that you do. So in my blog, I write “I was in Chicago doing an inspirational talk for…” and hotlink “inspirational talk” to my bio.
3 ways to get links to your site:
1 – Ask politely. You might not always get a link but it never hurts to ask.
2 – Comment on other relevant blogs (and have your pagerank on so you ignore low pagerank and high alexa). Note that most comments in themselves do not constitute a link. But being out there gets people to look at you. You need people to look at your stuff for them to be inspired to link to it.
3 – Have good material. People link to quality. But of course they have to see it so promote your content:
Have your URL on all your print material, cards, letterhead, email sig file etc
Write guest articles and blogs in the right (high traffic) places (check the Alexa).
PR – get written about
Contribute to other sites. EG write reviews on Amazon, join the conversations.
And a word of warning. Never play games (like buying links).
In the end it is about having good quality material. And being out there so people look at your material. People link to quality without you asking as long as they know about it.

Domain Age
According to the current USPTO, Google is giving too much preference to the domain age. The older the better. If you have a new domain then try to book that for long period.
Deisgn of the Web Site
The simpler the website design the better. Say no flash and java scripts. Keep close to HTML 3.2 if you can. Spiders like eating HTML 4.0 and XML. Follow all the factors of usability and accessibility so that you site can serve easy, better and simple navigation for your visitors. Make your webpage validate according to the standards of W3C.
Size of your web page
The smaller the page sizes the better. Keep your page size under 15K-20K including images if you can. As I mentioned smaller the better keep it up to 5k if you can. I know it’s a tough job. Use small gif images according to DDA act and follow the rule Of one topic one page hope this can reduce your page size.
Keyword Research
First understand your business and your target visitors, then start researching over the key phrases. There are various tools for keyword research. Go for Wordtracker and Overture.
Web Page Content
The Content of the web page should not be more then 200 -250 words. As per the survey no visitor stays on the page for more then 10 sec in the first phase of surfing. Make your content spicy and interesting so that you can retain your visitor and increase your sessions. The keyword density should be 5%-7% out of these 250 words.
Prominence Positioning and proximity of the Keyphrase
Use Keyword once in title, once in description, once in heading with the H1 Tag Once in the url considering the usability factors, once high on the page, once in italic and Make the density 5-7% out of 200 words. Don’t make your content summary of poison words for Google, so no spelling mistakes.
Outbound Linking Structure of the Web site
As considering the trust rank algorithm give one or two good link from you web page. The outbound links should be TLD and should be valuable resource for your visitors.
External Linking Structure of the Web Site
Say no to irrelevant reciprocal linking. Do quality and highly relevant reciprocal
linking for your web site. Try to achieve the one way back links through paid and free directory submissions. Go for the listing in Demoz.
Do Submissions
Submit you main website on Google, MSN, Yahoo, TEOMA,Wise Nut individually.
Website Monitoring & Analysis
Get a high quality referrer checker or web analytic software that can help you to analyze the performance of your web site.
Offer some viral on your website

One of the most important aspects of website optimisation is ensuring content has an effective headline, as any SEO specialist will know.
As well as summarising the story in just a few words and grabbing the reader’s attention, a good optimising headline must include keywords that are relevant to the terms an internet user would be likely to enter into a search engine.
Internet entrepreneur and marketing expert Dean Hunt likens writing a powerful SEO headline to fishing – a good fisherman has the ability to know where the fish are likely to be.
Writing on his own website, Mr Hunt transfers this skill to website optimisation with the following advice.
Firstly, decide the core message you want to put across.
And secondly, put yourself into the shoes of an internet user who is about to search for that message on Google.
Mr Hunt advises anyone who wants to write a headline targeted for SEO to visit Google.co.uk first and type in whatever they think will get the best results.
The words that bring up the most relevant information should be the words you use in your headline, he says.
Social media consultant specialist Michael Gray says a headline is one of the most powerful tools in gaining readers.
Writing for the website Search Engine Land, he recommends avoiding cliches, which will cause readers to switch off immediately.
He also states that, while it is okay to have fun with headlines and perhaps insert a little humour, writers should avoid coming across as inaccurate at all costs.
“If you’ve gotten someone’s attention being humorous, entertaining or even slightly sensational, you’re going to ultimately have to deliver on your promise,” he writes.
KC Morgan, writing for the blog SEO Chat, notes that headlines should be a natural, easy way for website marketers to add more keywords to their content.
“With a strong emphasis on SEO, your pages can pull in more visitors – and that means more money for your content,” he notes. “Not a bad trade-off for a few titles.”

1) First of all, choose a domain name that is somehow related to the business you are in. For example, if you are looking for a domain name for your pillow business, you might want to try using a name like www.SquarePillows.com or www.PillowSleep.com. It is important to use a “real” domain name. Your visitors will not take your business seriously if you use a free domain name like www.tripod.com/squarepillows , or www.angelfire.com/pillowsleep . A lot of the good domain names are already spoken for, but if you are patient enough, you will search and find one that is still available. If you think that you will need more than one domain name, get that one now too, as thousands of names are taken up each day. Do a search under “Google” using “cheap domain names” as your search words. You will find some very reasonably priced domain registrars. The cheapest one that I have found so far is at www.GoDaddy.com. They are a full service operation offering web hosting and cheap, cheap, cheap domain registration.
2) You will need a hosting service for your domain name. The hosting service allows your domain name and all of its content to be viewed on the internet. This is easy to handle. You have basically two choices here. You can pay for the hosting service or get it for free. If money is not really a problem for you, then you may want to choose the paid version. Just do a search using “Google” with “web hosting” as your search words, and take your pick from the thousands of sites. You will find that the price charged varies wildly depending the services required. Now if you want to explore the free version…. There are a lot of free hosting companies on the internet. The problem with these free hosting companies is that they all require some sort of pop-up banner, static header or footer banner, or both, to be placed on each and every web page. These banners can contain all kinds of advertising, and some, or all of it, may not be welcome to the viewers on your web site. The free hosting option is certainly not the best one to explore. To save you time, I would recommend www.GoDaddy.com again for the most economical hosting of your web site.
3) Once you have your domain name and hosting service taken care of, you will probably need a way of uploading your web content to your site. Sometimes your web hosting service provider includes a site manager that allows this function. If not, then you might want to look into downloading some FTP software such as WS_FTP for example at www.ipswitch.com. While you are downloading software, you may also want to add WINZIP – located at www.WinZip.com to your download list. WINZIP allows you to “unzip” your “PillowSleep” file for example. A file is initially “zipped” to compress it for ease of downloading. To use this download zip file, you will have to “unzip” it first.
4) Your “PillowSleep” site probably needs a little more customizing. Look at other pillow sites on the internet for comparison and see what could be improved visually on your site. Does it need any flashy graphics? There are many free graphics available on the internet – just do a search with google. Once you are happy with the way your web site looks, it’s now time to focus on that fun part – html coding. Unless you are very comfortable using “html” coding, don’t touch the “html” coding on the “PillowSleep” pages at all. If you are comfortable using “hml”, then you could add things like Title, Meta Keywords, Meta Descriptions, etc., which would allow the search engines to find your web site much easier. The use of “keyword phrases” is much more useful than just using “keywords”, because it makes your web site more search specific. Go ahead and add a “Pillow” links page too. Another tip is always keep a hard copy of your web pages somewhere, either on a floppy, cd, or dvd. There are few things worse than customizing a web site and if something bad happens to your computer or hard drive, losing the web content forever.
5) At this point, you probably already have uploaded your web site and have it online. Now you need to “drive” visitors to your site. One popular way of bringing traffic to your site is to use a free link exchange or free link trading service. For the free link exchange service, you just sign up and put a little bit of code on your “Pillow” web site (this allows other Pillow web site banners to be viewed on your site and vice versa). The free link trading service is very simple also. You simply add another pillow’s link to your links page and vice versa. This trading of links increases your sites popularity greatly with the search engines. One of the most important things you can do to gain traffic is to get listed with the major search engines. Go to each search engine, or use a free service like www.AddMe.com and add your web site there. There is also what is called “pay-per-click” search engines where you actually pay for traffic sent to your web site. Other search engines require payment in order to get listed with them at all. “Yahoo” is one of these “pay” search engines.
6) Please be advised that is illegal to “Spam” on the internet or via e-mail. Spamming is sending unwanted e-mails or putting internet advertising material, or internet material in general where it should not be. That being said, another method of marketing and promoting your site is to add your site to casino and gambling message boards and free for all links pages. Please check to see if it is ok to post your info there first, and in which category, and anywhere else before posting there. If you “Spam”, you risk losing your internet service provider, and possibly your web host with all of your web content. It’s just not worth the trouble.
7) Another way of promoting your site is to add your web site address to your business cards, and/or make up flyers and posters. Don’t forget to get permission before you post anything anywhere. If you have other web sites, add a banner and/or link to your “Pillow” site there. Make a t-shirt with your “Pillow” graphic and web address on it (on both sides of the t-shirt) for yourself to wear. If you want, add your “Pillow” graphic logo and web address to different products like baseball caps and coffee mugs, and give them away as promotional items. Buy an ad on a bus stop, or a small classified ad in the local paper, or radio ad, etc. How about getting two of those “12 inch x 12 inch” sticky, bendable, removable, flat, “magnet ads” made up at your local printing store to put on the sides of your vehicle’s doors. When you drive around the city, every body will see your web site ad and when you get to your destination, simply take the sign off until you leave again. How about putting one of your “Pillow” flyers or small posters on the inside of your vehicle’s rear side glass areas. Just make sure it doesn’t obscure your vision. The idea is to use your creativity here.
