Whats going on with Google and web design?

Lets ask this question: do people search beyond the first page of Google, in fact do they search beyond the first couple of entries? The answer is no they dont. For example as a web design sydney company we are not placed in the top 3 or 4 places on the first page but we are say 3 from the bottom. This is no good. We might as well be on page 6 which is what we are for the search term web design.

This poses a very interesting situation or at least question: what is the point of having any pages for a search term beyond page 1 of google. Lets be very real and honest here with ourselves that anything beyond page 1 of google is a total waste of time and for businesses relying on google for their sales leads are finding it very hard to get new business leads.

In the old days it was east you put a thumping great ad in the yellow pages say under the website design classification  and wait for the phone to ring. Nowadays if you want to be on google and easily found you ahve to spend a fortune on SEO and then you might not even get placed wheere you want to be. This is a real issue and will present some serios problems for new business start ups in the future as well as existing businesses who for a long time have relied on the yellow pages or a more traditional media mix to generate sales leads.

Article Source: http://www.articlesbase.com/What’s the Difference between a Landing Page and a Microsite?

At Roger West we are often asked, “What’s the difference between a landing page and a microsite?”

So, I thought I would try and explain.

As you may already know, landing pages and microsites have a lot in common. They are used during marketing campaigns to extend the impact of an advertisement, whether online of offline. The original advertisement could be a Google ad campaign, an online banner, or perhaps a newspaper or magazine ad. Both have the same general purpose, which is to convert visitors to either a lead or a sale by offering an opportunity to make a decision.

So, what’s the difference?

Landing Pages

A landing page is a single page of content and focuses on one specific call-to-action. The CTA might be to download a whitepaper, purchase a product or request additional information. Whatever the offer might be, it must be simple enough to explain and convert on one page – and one page only. Offering too much content, too many images, and too many messages will distract the prospect – reducing the likelihood of conversion.

Microsites

On the other hand, a microsite is a mini-site with 3-5 pages of content. While the purpose of the microsite is to convert, the microsite is built to handle a larger volume of content. Usually, this approach is necessary when the offer is more complex and requires more information to convince a prospect to convert or when multiple paths to conversion are necessary.

I hope this information helps you as you decide what’s best for your next Internet marketing campaign.

What’s Most Important For A Successful Website?

What’s Most Important For A Successful Website?

Three very different disciplines must work together to launch a successful Website. These relationships are critical to the site’s success, yet conflicts usually arise. Here are a few ideas on how to find the right solution and drive results from the three disciplines:

* Marketing – The strategy and content for a Website.
* Design – The colors, fonts, look and feel and Website graphics
* Development – The technology platform for the Website.

It is difficult to find three professions more different in business today. Which of these three functions are most important and which should drive the Website’s results? The answer should not be a surprise to our readers. The majority of Websites are marketing tools and therefore marketing is most important. Many Websites lack clear and effective marketing direction and this leads to poor results.

Marketing Drives Design

It is very common during the early stages of the Website development process for design issues to drive the project. This is wasted energy and can easily lead to bad decisions and also provide the wrong direction. The process should be driven by strategic marketing planning. This planning will set the design direction, which is secondary to driving results and meeting user needs.

Marketing Drives Development

The same is true for development and technology issues. The first rule of thumb is Website usability. Usability is more important than any other technical issue. The biggest mistake made in development is selecting a restrictive development platform because it works for the developer.

Avoid Sample Size of One

It is very common for one key person on the Website project to make major decisions based on their personal experience and preferences. This is often based on judgements around design and development. These decisions should be based on solid branding and marketing fundamentals.

Website Users Drive Marketing

The Website user drives the entire process. How well the site meets user needs will determine the Website’s ROI and overall results. Smart marketers let customers and prospects drive results and provide strategic direction for the actual Website marketing.

Ultimately, Website marketing is a marketing function and both design and development teams should follow the lead of marketing professionals. Marketing teams should follow the lead of prospects, customers, clients and ultimately Website users. This leads to happy site users, excellent ROI and Website conversions.

What’s all the fuss about link building?

What’s all the fuss about link building?

A fair amount of chatter around search engine optimisation concerns the building of inbound links. These are links that flow into your site from elsewhere on the net. Link building forms a significant portion of off page optimisation – in fact, almost all of it.

The reason there’s so much of a fuss made about building up a good link profile is because the search engines love links. Links have always been a factor in SEO, but as time goes by the search engines are coming to rely on them more and more as a way to judge your site. Talk to our consultants at SEO Consult about the place of link building in optimisation.

It can help to think of links as character references for your site. Picture someone checking out a potential new romantic partner. A cautious person might ask around the person’s friends, and have a chat with everyone they know who knows the person. From these different conversations, they feel that they can build up a better picture of what the person is really like than simply by talking to them face-to-face.

The search engines feel the same way about your site. Instead of diving headlong into a supportive relationship based on the optimisation you’ve performed on your pages, the search engines want someone else’s word that you’re respectable. In terms of relationships, the search engines have been hurt plenty of times before, and they’re more than a little cautious.

When building up your link profile, think about the kind of links you’d like to have vouch for you. Buying links in bulk can seem like a great way to begin, but when Google goes to have a chat with them, what are they going to say? It’s better to build up a solid network of reliable-looking friends.

What’s the Formula for a Strong Landing Page?

What’s the Formula for a Strong Landing Page?

When advertising online through the use of Web ads or email messages, your main goal is to increase the overall amount of site traffic. However, one should keep in mind, that you also want to turn those new visitors into potential prospects. It may take some work, but a good landing page that elaborates on the ad copy can be a useful way to accomplish this goal.

The Formula that works:

Successful landing pages are ones that build upon the brief ad copy (that is, the printed text or spoken words in an advertisement) to maximize visitor information. Don’t be intimidated by the idea of forging separate landing pages for each campaign either. You’ll likely spend a large amount of time, energy, and funds creating online ads. Does it not make sense to consider what your visitors are going to find once those ads bring them to your page?

1. Skip the B.S. – Avoid having an overwhelming amount of details for your visitors to read.  The things you’d like to highlight should be quick and direct. If the landing page content is easy to look over and contains the information originally promised in the ad they saw, you’ll create a stronger reason for your clients to trust you.

2. Get them to dig deeper – Use an outstanding text link/button that will entice your visitor into exploring your site and finding out how the use of your product/service can really benefit them.

Your initial statement should act as a primer for visitors and make them want even more info from you. This is when you envoke your clients to take action.  A statement such as: “Learn the secrets behind maximizing your daily workout!” should take your visitors to the full “Secrets of Working Out” information and subscription page – and possibly result in some new customers.

3. Make your aesthetic cohesive – People who visit your site should not, at any given point, feel the need to ask themselves where they’ve arrived after clicking on a link within your site. One can avoid this by using consistant colors, layouts, fonts, images, and navigation in your ads and landing pages that reflect the original feel on your main site.

This is really effective when you’re sending out HTML based emails, because, they can be formated to look any way that you desire.  Its an opportune time to strengthen your site’s brand and create a visual connection between the ad, the web site, and the product/service.

4. Collect essential information only – Stay conscious of the information you’re requesting from people.  Try to keep it simple, and ask for their name and their contact info. Most online visitors don’t expect you to share valuable data for free.  Of course you’ll want to know who’s responding to your ads and it would be nice to have the ability to follow up with more information or other non-invasive ads.

Sometimes visitors may be willing to complete a survey in order to receive other benefits, but you should pocket that option for now unless the ad you put up made it a condition. Also, don’t forget to make a link to your privacy policy available so visitors are kept informed about how and when you plan to use their personal information.

5. Maximize the use of search engines – Take advantage of search engines by submitting your landing page to them.  You’ll recieve a doubled benefit in doing so.  Those little search engine spiders work well with pages that contain a copious amount of keyword-rich text.

If you think about it, landing pages make fantastic targets for promotions through search engines since they are so specific; and, visitors that use those search engines love them because they get directed to the relevant info they were looking for.  Whenever you deep submit (to make your content more accessible from search engines) landing pages, you pull in traffic from visitors who may not have viewed your ad, but remain as good, targeted, traffic anyway because they’ve obviously been running searches on your targeted keywords. Its like getting the benefit of advertising, only without spending the money! Try using “Search Engine Starter” to deep submit individual pages.

The power in having an appealing page design:

A landing page should always be just as attractive and well crafted as your home page. Remember, its the very first page a visitor sees when they click on your ads, so it will have as much of an impact as your home page.

As far as looks go, a good design almost always establishes credibility. If your site looks like a 13-year-old was paid to make it, it’ll be hard to get visitors to take your online business seriously. Poor landing pages that aren’t well constructed, can make your product or service seem generic in comparison to those that took the extra time and effort.  You’ve got to convince online customers that it’s safe to buy from your site and visitors usually equate a good-looking site as trustworthy one.

Test, then analyze:

Before you go ahead and spend your funds on a marketing campaign, why not increase your chance of success a little more by conducting usability testing on those pages.  In doing this, one can catch errors that may break page display and don’t forget to experiment with different text styles and layouts.

So in case you’re a little… slow:

Almost all of these suggestions I’ve made are related to forging strong content for your landing pages. Having solid content is highly imperative to your success, all the while simultaneously displaying a distinctive, and attractive design that keeps people coming back for more.

What’s Wrong With Reciprocal Linking?

What’s Wrong With Reciprocal Linking?

Plain and simple; a lot!

Reciprocal linking has been so abused by webmasters and Search Engine Optimization (SEO) experts (term used loosely when it comes to reciprocal linking) that the larger search engines have begun the process of disregarding reciprocal links as irrelevant.

Does that mean you will be penalized for having some? No, you won’t be penalized (unless they lead to ‘bad neighborhoods’) but you will also not gain anything from having them either.

What has brought this downfall of reciprocal linking? Automation and spam sites but mostly automation. Automation allowed for membership sites to be created where trading can happen at the click of a button and your site is updated automatically with the new link page including the new link. Automation also allowed for finding link partners to send generic emails to in the hopes that they would take the bait and link back to you in return for your link to them.

Now, I like automation when done in a responsible and sensible way. But much of the reciprocal linking automation was about getting as many links as possible as fast as possible. Obviously, unless you are YouTube or MySpace, this is very unnatural and has been easy for the search engines to include in their algorithms.

Many webmasters threw all senses out the window in their quest for reciprocal links. They would go after anyone and everyone rather than finding related and quality partners to share links. Some even would say that they did it for the traffic, except that most of the sites that they traded links with didn’t have any traffic and they were trading links to get higher search engine placement to get more traffic.

Another fatal flaw of reciprocal linking is the unscrupulous webmaster who buries your link on a page that will never be visited by a human visitor and probably not a search engine bot either. Most webmasters were not taking the time to actually see if the page their link was placed on could be found by the visitors to the parent site and therefore didn’t get any search engine benefit or any natural traffic benefit. However, because you were a honest webmaster the link from your site did pass page rank and visitors to the other site and therefore the unscrupulous benefited greatly from laziness.

Now, most recently, there have been the 3-way reciprocal linking requests. This is still a reciprocal request and is still very easy for a search engine to identify. In fact, you would need to have hundreds if not thousands of web sites that you were rotating your 3rd site links through for 3-way linking to be difficult to detect. When webmasters explain it they make it sound like it is better than regular reciprocal linking but the reality is that it is more spammy than reciprocal linking because you are intentionally doing it to achieve better search engine placements.

So, my recommendation is to stay away from all reciprocal linking (at least in the traditional sense).

Well, what’s left you may ask? The answer really goes back to more traditional marketing methods for creating traffic to a campaign. In the web world, our campaign is usually to gain more traffic and if we get higher search engine placement to get that traffic then it is a bonus.

All of the following, create long lasting 1-way backlinks that may come from highly respected authority sites and therefore carry more value in the search engine algorithms.

To start with, there is the tried and true method of submitting your site to ‘hand-edited’ web directories. Although not all of them are hand-edited a vast majority are. Which also means that the free web directories have a back log that may be a couple of days to a couple of months. Even still, it is worth submitting to as many directories as you can. Don’t expect much traffic from this method but that’s ok because we are really looking for the 1-way backlink.

Next, would be article submissions/marketing. Write individual articles or create a series of articles and submit them to the major article repositories. Article marketing doesn’t usually have an immediate effect on traffic but will build links over time as a well written article will be republished on many sites, blogs, and newsletters.

I usually recommend directory submissions and article marketing take place first because they take the longest to actually gain momentum. But once they do it can be an incredible experience.

Next come the more time consuming but more immediate techniques. They are signature usage, site development, social bookmarking and context linking.

Signature usage is really simple. It is the task of commenting on blogs or forums that are related to your sites general topic. The benefit is a self-placed backlink to your own site. These links can usually even be to pages on the interior of your web site not just the home page. One of the best techniques to generate traffic from your signature is to offer link followers a discount or unique benefit just for following that link.

Site development is simply the process of making your site attractive and friendly to visitors. Sometimes this is called Visitor Experience Optimization (VEO). VEO becomes more and more important as your site gains more and more visitors. Your goal is to have a site that keeps a visitor there as long as possible. It will also increase the likely hood that anonymous webmasters will place links on their site to your site without a request from you – a 1-way link.

Social bookmarking is one of those things that webmasters may do that will make them feel funny and seem like they aren’t doing the right thing. It’s really OK as long as it is done without complete automation and without the intent to spam the bookmarking sites. What you are really trying to do is submit a vote for your own sites’ pages (don’t submit every single page of your site) into the bookmarking sites. Hopefully someone else will see your submission and agree with your vote and so on and so on. This technique will not work with every web site but it is worth at least submitting your pages to a group of bookmarking sites with some hope…

Finally, for those reciprocal request that you will undoubtedly continue to receive, contextual linking is what you want. Even if it is a reciprocal link between sites, if it is embedded within the normal context of the other webmasters web site it will be more trusted than a standard reciprocal link. Basically it will appear more natural to the user and to the search engine bots. Obviously for it to make sense, any reciprocal linking should only be done between sites that are related in some way and please don’t make every incoming link appear the same. Change the text of the link and the context of the paragraph or page the link comes from so that it once again appears natural.

Of course, even if you do all of these things perfectly, there is no guarantee that you will be on the first page of any search engine result pages. But you will at least have a chance and will outrank a vast majority of the competition sites in the coming years.

SEO Tips – What’s the Difference Between SEO and SEM?

Do you know what I love about marketers? I love how they absolutely can butcher some terms to death. SEO and SEM are two examples. Many beginners use these interchangeably as if they meant the same thing. However, they are not the same. So, in order to clear up some of the confusion, this article is going to first explain the difference between the two and then offer some tips on each. I am sure you will find this informative and hopefully, keep you from talking about one thing when you really mean the other.

Let’s start with SEO, which stands for search engine optimization. This actually refers to the practice of using on and off page tactics to get your site ranked higher on the SERPs. On page tactics would be the use of keywords, anchor text, meta tags and so on, in order to get your site ranked. Off page tactics would be writing articles, getting backlinks, using video and other web 2.0 properties to get your site ranked higher on the SERPs. In a nutshell, that’s SEO.

Okay, so then what exactly is SEM? SEM is using paid marketing in order to get more traffic to your site. This could mean using things like Google Adwords or even Yahoo’s or MSN’s pay per click services. Essentially, you are using paid search engine listings in order to get traffic. It has nothing to do with your actual organic placement in the SERPs. In fact, your site can be on page 100 organically. But if you bid high enough on keywords, you could be listed first in the paid listings. So as you can see, the two work together but one is not dependent on the other.

As for tips, let’s start with SEO first. If you’re on a tight budget, as many beginning marketers are, this is the way you want to go. You can actually get a good ranking without ever having to spend a dime on advertising. By optimizing your site as best as you can, writing articles, submitting press releases, making videos, bookmarking and getting backlinks, you can easily conquer even the toughest niches. If money is tight and time is not a problem, this is the way to go.

However, if time is at a premium and money is no object, then there is no quicker way to get traffic than through SEM. A paid ad that appears at the top of the paid listings can bring you hundreds of visitors a day IF the demand for those keywords is there. As I said, you can be on page 100 organically and it won’t matter. However, IF you are going to go the SEM route, you want to make sure that you get a solid education on pay per click marketing before you tackle this beast. Many marketers have lost their shirts going the SEM route because they didn’t know what they were doing.

There you have it. The difference between SEO and SEM and some tips on using them both. Hopefully, you found this information useful.

To YOUR Success,

Steven Wagenheim

The Social Media Craze – What’S Working, What’S Lost Luster And What Is Flying Under The Radar

The Social Media Craze – What’S Working, What’S Lost Luster And What Is Flying Under The Radar

Social Media, Networking, Blogging and Uploading Videos, what won’t people do today to get more clients? Even the President of the United States of America is on these sites and they are doing him a lot of good! But what really works? What’s doing better than others? Lets go over some of the sites.

Facebook and Myspace. In the beginning they seemed to be more of the friendly young crowd sites you use to meet someone and make friend with. But now it’s become a great place to meet like-minded people and that can be for business or pleasure. The only thing about these kinds of sites is that they were not made for the purpose of social networking in from a business point of view. Facebook for example has about 1% of the world’s population on it but you and I can’t see that since a members list is not available. So you only get to add people to know by name or who are friends of friends.

With blogging sites, you need the time to put up posts on a regular basis. In twitter, it’s great for sort of getting a fan base for your self and for meeting other people like yourself doing what you’re trying to do. There are many different Blog sites so depending on where you’re from and what you do it’s best you pick a site that can benefit you the most, or join many sites and keep them running as long as they are working out for you.

Video Posting is another great social media gig that, yes, President Obama does so well. No need to say you have to be able to act or project in the video! If you’re selling something you don’t want people think you’re a lunatic, so this gig is not meant for everyone. For those of you, who can do it, by all means get your face in you tube and get people watching you and listening to what you have to say. Reading something on someone’s blog is far different from watching a video of him or her whether it’s a good or a bad thing is up toy you.

Other sites such as Linkedin or Ecademy are also great sites but are more standard in other countries. So many sites are in, some are flying under the radar, but what matters to you would depend on what you do and what you sell. It’s not a bad idea to try out a few of your top picks and see, which grows for you more, and stick to it. But don’t expect a sudden rush of adds or views because on the web, half of the world is competing with you.
