Facebook.com is not just for kids anymore. Demographics are showing that the age group for places likes Facebook and Twitter is from 25-54 years old. For those in marketing that makes little pictures of cash registers light up in the eyes. The potential client base for your service or products is staggering and world wide of course. Call Fedex! But the big question is how do you use this to your advantage? Well to start with there are some things you need to be aware of so you can best use the social media craze to best advantage. Things like 48% more women then men will use a social media site and log on to it several times a day. So aiming for the female population with your ads is a good place to start. But you got to watch those numbers. More men use Linkedin then women do.  The reports for 2009 say that FaceBook grew to 350 million users, with Linkedin at 55 million and Twitter growing fast at 3 million to start and 40 million at the end of the year. Talk about growth spurts!

Places like FaceBook.com, MySpace.com, and Twitter allow people to connect with family and friends although the tide is turning and more and more people are using these sites to network their jobs. It seems that social media is a more relaxed way to interact professionally.

Google announced in 2009 that they would be including Twitter and FaceBook updates in their search results. This news makes the social media phenomenon even more wide spread.

The trick to using social media to make money is to generate a conversation about your brand. There are a few rules to follow for best results.

Think about your audience, what you want to say, how you want to say it and what reactions you hope to achieve. You may wish to put a professional social networker in charge for best results.

Create a conversation about your brand and actually read the feedback. This will give you a better understanding of what is needed and what you are doing correctly than any 20 person study group could.

Update the information you provide regularly. To keep FaceBook fan pages alive and Twitter tweets tweeting your stuff needs to be current and constant. If your fans get bored they will not visit your page or bring others to it. The goal after all is to build a following for your brand.

If you entertain your followers on a regular basis they will continue to follow you and even bring more of their followers to follow you. Social media sites will help you to develop a trust with your clients.  Most people prefer to buy from people they trust. With a social media page you can ad photos of your employees and family. That will help people get to know you better and trust you more.

Use articles and share your expertise.  If you run an online florist shop, use articles on gift giving. Make them entertaining and viable. You can use the social media explosion to make money online but you need to learn to think outside the box as far as standard advertising. Let your hair down and become human not just another company and people will trust you and thus buy your products. Social media is here to stay and with billions of potential customers learning the rules will generate a new client base for you and your brand.
