There’s Something about Twitter

So we know that there are two types of people in this world – those who love Twitter and those who don’t get what all the fuss is about it.

I’ve been thinking. I know, scary, right? Much has been said about the poor retention rates despite the amazing stats on Twitter take up (mostly due to celebrities that I don’t really feel like naming here). I get the feeling that Twitter’s diverse and personal nature could be what is standing between it and utter world domination. Facebook for example, is so much more structured. You create a profile and it’s all about you which is a subject most people know quite well. You can upload your email contact lists and suddenly your connected with people you already know. Twitter can be many things to many people. It’s a search engine, a broadcast channel, a chat room, a news site, a celebrity fansite, a job network. However it is something that needs to be created for each individual. Registration gives you a little corner of the web and the rest is up to you.

Personally I love this. I love that I can not only make it what I want or need it to be, but that if someone is using it for the exact opposite purpose, then I don’t even need to know they exist. I think this is too much effort for those abandoning Twitter as fast as they signed up. They need the strucutre and the ease of being a part of a network, not creating a custom built network around them. I wonder if the demographics of Twitter users gives us more insight into this approach: with 49% of users in the 35+ age bracket (Nielsen via Mashable) is this one social media application Gen Y just doesn’t get?
