With childhood obesity at an all time high, weight loss for teens is no longer just about being popular in high school. More and more teens and young adults are at risk for diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, and high blood pressure than ever before. So what is a parent to do? 1. Don’t tempt your teen with junk food all over the house, keep healthy snacks available and ready to eat, kids tend to go for what is quick and easy when looking for a snack. Cut up and wash some fresh fruits and vegetables and maybe stock some low fat veggie dip, and have them readily available at the front of the refrigerator.

2. Video games, television shows geared toward teens, and internet social networking sites (myspace, face book, twitter) are major reasons why kids are less active and therefore more overweight than ever before. So try to set limits and certain times that your teen can be on the computer or in front of the television.

3. Now that your child is no longer glued to the tube, get them out of the house and moving around. Encourage your teen to get involved in some type of sport or activity involving exercise on a regular basis. Most of these activities are going to be costly, however, the long term benefits far outweigh the money that you will shell out. Not only does this keep your teen fit, but, it will also teach them other important life skills that will benefit them down the road.

4. Make fitness a family affair. In most cases, the attention span or your average teen is not very long. Getting into the habit of going on family walks or bike rides is a great way to get your teen in shape and also makes for some great family bonding. Sticking with an exercise routine is much easier when you have someone to do it with you, this goes for people of all ages, not just the youngsters. You may not getting a thank you right away, but, somewhere down the line, when your teen has grown into a healthy, well adjusted adult, they will thank you.
